The MDC Alliance will on Tuesday issue out a statement on its much talked about financial audit.

The routine audit came after some sectors of the media claimed that huge amounts of money were not accounted for in the opposition party.

The Treasurer General of the party, David Coltart quickly dismissed the rumour that the financial audit was a witch-hunt exercise.

The claims were that party president and secretary-general, in that order, Nelson Chamisa and Chalton Hwende diverted party funds into personal use.

Coltart however said that the audit was only meant to enhance accountability and transparency in the party.

“As I have made clear to a variety of journalists in the last few weeks since this false story first emerged I am not aware of any money which has been misappropriated from MDC coffers by any official or party leader,” said Coltart.

“The attempts by some to portray the audit as some kind of investigation into alleged impropriety are misleading and utterly false,” he added.

The audit was agreed to last year and is a routine audit. I should also point out that this is the first time the MDC has conducted an audit of this nature and it is the first time any political party in Zimbabwe has ever subjected itself to an audit.
