Public Outcry Forces Change as Selmor Mtukudzi Takes Center Stage at Late Father’s Tribute Show

By Showbiz Reporter | ZimEye | Zimbabwean music fans have rallied behind Selmor Mtukudzi, daughter of the late music legend Oliver Mtukudzi, after she was initially excluded from a tribute concert in honor of her father. The event, set to take place at Pakare Paye Arts Centre, was originally planned without Selmor’s participation, sparking widespread outrage and a wave of support for the musician on social media.

Following intense public pressure and an outpouring of support, Selmor has now been named the headlining act of the Pakare Paye show. Expressing her gratitude to those who spoke up for her, Selmor shared an emotional message: “To all who spoke up for me, you guys have been amazing. I’m extremely humbled by the love you have for my father, which has extended over to me. I will not take it for granted. For that reason, and in honour of my father’s legacy, I will be coming to Pakare Paye. Please come out in your numbers, and let’s do this the right way. I love you all❤️.”

Selmor’s announcement

The decision to feature Selmor as the main performer has been seen by many as a victory for those who felt she was unfairly sidelined. However, the situation has left Oliver Mtukudzi’s widow, Daisy Mtukudzi, facing public humiliation amid the backlash. Many Zimbabweans criticized her perceived role in Selmor’s exclusion from the event, prompting an uncomfortable spotlight on family tensions.

In response to the controversy, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, the Director of Information for the ruling ZANU-PF party, back in 2019 took to Twitter to clarify Selmor’s relationship with her late father’s second wife, Daisy Mtukudzi. Mugwadi stated:

  1. “Let me clarify the context on the Selmor & Daisy Mtukudzi matter. Selmor has always treated Daisy with the utmost respect despite what some may insinuate. It is unfortunate that this incident has been blown out of proportion.”
  2. “At her father’s funeral, Selmor demonstrated her integrity by refusing to accept donations that were meant for the widow, Daisy. She asked that any contributions be given to Daisy instead, showcasing her respect and understanding.”
  3. “This is not the time to sow division or speculate. Selmor Mtukudzi’s actions have always reflected the values of her father – humility, respect, and peace. Let us focus on celebrating the legacy of Oliver Mtukudzi, a national icon.”

Mugwadi’s comments aimed to dispel any notions of animosity between Selmor and Daisy, emphasizing the daughter’s respectful demeanor in the wake of her father’s passing.

As the date for the Pakare Paye show approaches, the renewed involvement of Selmor Mtukudzi has revitalized interest in the event, turning it into not just a tribute to Oliver Mtukudzi’s enduring legacy but also a celebration of unity and respect within the music community. Fans of the late music icon are expected to turn out in large numbers to honour his memory and support Selmor as she takes the stage in his name.- ZimEye
