Former Mashonaland United right-back Jonathan Zhungu has passed away at the age of 96. He died on Monday morning and will be laid to rest today at Athlone Cemetery.

Born on August 18, 1928, in Manicaland Province, Zhungu grew up in a region rich in culture and sports. His early education and training as a builder took place in Manicaland, specifically at Mount Selinda Mission. After completing his training, he ventured across the Zambezi River to Zambia, where he began playing more competitive football with a local team in the Copperbelt region.

Zhungu’s football career saw him transition to Bulawayo, where he became a prominent player for Eastern Rovers, which later became Eastlands, and Mashonaland United, now known as Zimbabwe Saints. His legacy is marked by his skill on the field and the connections he made with other notable players, including former Vice President of Zimbabwe, Joseph Msika, and centurion Nevison Majuta Masunda.

His son, Jasper Zhungu, reflected on his father’s impact, sharing that while he did not witness his father play, he has seen the medals Jonathan earned throughout his career. This speaks to a life dedicated not only to football but also to the values of hard work and perseverance.

As mourners gather at A4 Mzilikazi, the football community has expressed deep sorrow over Zhungu’s passing. Saints board of trustees chairman Vincent Pamire and club chairman Lloyd Munhanga issued statements mourning the loss of a true legend of the game, highlighting the significant contributions he made to Zimbabwean football.

Jonathan Zhungu’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of players, reminding them of the rich history and passion that football embodies in Zimbabwe.
