A Chronicle of Morgan Tsvangirai’s Personal Struggle for Citizens’ Freedom from Zanu PF Oppression

Morgan Richard Tsvangirai (10 March 1952 – 14 February 2018) was a prominent Zimbabwean politician who served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 2009 to 2013.
He was the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), later renamed MDC-T, and a key figure in the opposition against former President Robert Mugabe.
Political Arrests and Intimidation
- Treason Charge: Tsvangirai was arrested after the 2000 elections and charged with treason. His defense team was led by George Bizos, a renowned South African human rights lawyer who had previously defended Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu during the 1964 Rivonia Trial.
- May 2003 Arrest: In May 2003, shortly after giving a press conference, Tsvangirai was arrested. The government accused him of inciting violence.
- March 2007 Arrest: On 11 March 2007, a day after his 55th birthday, Tsvangirai was arrested on his way to a prayer rally in the Highfield township of Harare.
- Bodyguard’s Death: On 25 October 2007, it was reported that Nhamo Musekiwa, Tsvangirai’s bodyguard since the formation of MDC in 1999, passed away from complications resulting from injuries sustained in March 2007.
- Assassination Plot: Tsvangirai was scheduled to return to Harare on Saturday, 17 May 2008. However, a credible assassination plot was discovered, prompting him to remain in Europe for his safety.
Today marks 7 years since the death of our hero, Morgan Tsvangirai. May his soul continue to rest in peace. ?
