By Farai D Hove | US President Donald Trump’s local envoy has announced a massive influx of US business men and women flying into Zimbabwe to set up business here.

In a statement, the embassy said even top US government officials are headed for Zimbabwe.

The development comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa introduced several economic reforms including cancelling Robert Mugabe’s reckless land reform program.

“Zim should expect high level visits by US govt; American businesses are opening shop in Zim,” the US embassy said in a statement yesterday.

What does this mean for Zimbabwe?

With an effective restoration of Zimbabwe’s agriculture industry, ZimEye.com projects that in less than a year, Zimbabwe is set to once again become the world’s largest crop economy as it was in 1976 under former Prime Minister, Ian Smith. So far Mnangagwa has implemented other reforms which include removing the indigenisation Act.

  1. Wibert, fortunately your opinion on this has no weight at all. It’s absolutely irrelevant. What counts is exactly that which the Investors believe. Read the article again to understand their stand-point.
That said, I do not know on which planet you are living to Claim that ED wont make any reforms when extraordinary reforms have already been made in within an extraordinarily short period. Your negativity will kill you one day, if you fail to move with time.

  2. I think you need to realize that investors are not really worried about elections or democracy. They worry about the safety of their investments and at least a stable government. The main reason why investment has not coming was because of that stupid Indegenisation Act. Lets not tie the coming of investors to reforms. The government of the day can still be forced to reform even when we have investors around by other menans. We want relief for our unemployed population.
Lets find other ways. The long suffering people of Zimbabwe deserve jobs and a better life

  3. If you have never travelled outside the borders of Zim ,you may never even half understand what democracy means. Neither can you understand what Wilbert is trying to say because yours is a mind that is pro0grammed to only see things in only one way. Electoral reforms are needed for a free and fair election irrespective of who wins or whomever you want to win. Thats how democracy works.

  4. You just quote a statement that you attribute to the US Embassy and thats it? Where was it made or are you just trying to sell something?

  5. Which reforms are you referring to? Would you sacrifice the economic well being of the nation over “imaginery’ reforms? Vote for the party of your choice into power in the upcoming elections and ask that very same party to reform itself out of power again.

There is overwhelming evidence that President Mnangagwa will not implemented any reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections. Elections are due in four or five months and the regime has not implemented even one reform. There is simply no time left for any reform to be implemented. The question then arises: Are the “massive influx of US business men and women flying into Zimbabwe to set up business” aware the country will NOT be holding free, fair and credible elections?

It is hard to believe they are not aware. So, the only logical explanation will be that they do not care that Zanu PF is going to rig the elections. Americans and many in the West have wringed their hands in sheer frustration to watch the Chinese, Russians looting Zimbabwe’s resources for a song; they could not join in because of the targeted sanctions the West had imposed on Zanu PF leaders.

It is the people of Zimbabwe’s own fault that we did not make the most of the window of opportunity to implement the reforms all these last 16 years when the sanctions were in place. Although no democratic reforms have been implemented in the sanctions years, the West are now going to lift the sanctions for selfish business interests. If America lifts the sanctions the rest of the West will follow.

Am I surprised? Hell no! This is what one would expect with President Trump’s America first!
