By Paul Nyathi|ZimEye.com has been inundated with calls from Zimbabweans claiming that they are failing to access social media platforms WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook as from midnight on Monday.
While most people contacted by ZimEye.com in the early hours of Tuesday morning confirmed that they were failing to access their social media sites only a couple claimed they were accessing the sites.
The possible blackout of social media follows a message which circulated on the social media on Monday indicating that government was threatening to block access to the social media sites on claims that the media was being used to mobilise citizens to rise against the government.
On Monday, thousands of Zimbabweans in the major cities took to the streets in spontaneous uncoordinated protests against a fuel price increase which was effected on Sunday. At the same time the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions had called for a three day stay away from work calling on government to consider paying workers in United States Dollars.
