By A Correspondent| There was a coup attempt in Ethiopia on Saturday, according to the state media.
“There was an organized coup attempt in Bahir Dar but it failed,” Negussu Tilahun, spokesman for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, told state TV on Saturday, referring to the regional capital of Amhara state.
He added saying efforts were under way to apprehend the coup plotters, who he said attempted to oust Ambachew Mekonnen, the regional government head in Amhara, north of the capital Addis Ababa.
It was not clear at the time of writing who was behind the unrest.
By Saturday night, no group had publicly claimed responsibility.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reportedly appeared on national TV dressed in military uniform praising the army and urged them to keep their unity.
Meanwhile, the the US embassy issued a security alert on Saturday night. The statement read as follows:
