Former MDC T legislator for Masvingo CentralTongai Matutu who all but joined ZANU PF before the 2018 elections when he was disqualified from contesting party internal elections because of his continued disregard of the party policies today unveiled himself as a ZANU PF member to ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.

The former legislator was disqualified from contesting the MDC Alliance Masvingo chairmanship on the grounds that he once quit the party then led by late ex-Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai before he re-joined after heeding the MDC founding leader’s call for renegade members to return before his death.

Mr Matutu dumped Tsvangirai’s party and teamed up with Mr Tendai Biti and others to form the People’s Democratic Party.

He rejoined the party before the 2018 harmonised elections and according to his party’s constitution he was barred from holding office for five years for his misdemeanor.

In a rare occurance where an ordinary member joining ZANU PF does so at State House, Matutu told Mnangagwa that he was crossing over to Zanu PF saying the opposition party “in its various forms” has lost direction as it is now wasting precious time bickering among themselves.

Mnangagwa welcomed him together with his two Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi at State House in Harare on Monday afternoon.

President Mnangagwa said he felt elated in welcoming back “home” Matutu.

Briefing journalists, Matutu said he was not joining Zanu PF because he was desperate but he was guided by his conscience and was convinced that his decision was the best choice not only for him but for the nation.

He said more people were expected to follow suit as they were fed up by the loss of direction within the MDCs.
