Mashonaland West police are searching for a man from Mhangura who allegedly sexually assaulted his 14-year-old niece in 2019 before escaping.
The 25-year-old alleged rapist, whose video went viral while confessing to the sexual abuse during a show broadcast on October 16, 2024, is being sought by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
Supporters of the victim, who is now 19 years old, demanded justice in a public outcry.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated in the statement released on Friday that the law will undoubtedly take its course.
“A video from the Tinashe Mugabe DNA Show episode that is making the rounds on social media claims that a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by her 14-year-old uncle. The ZRP has taken notice of this.
“The victim in the video was allegedly sexually assaulted by the suspect after a football game in which he gave her beer.
Nyathi stated, “The ZRP reassures the public that allegations are being investigated so the law can take its course.”
At the beginning of the video, the accused criminal falsely claimed to be dating the victim. Additionally, he kept their close kinship a secret.
The issue surfaced when the victim revealed to Mugabe that her uncle was the child’s purported father, who was only known as Peter.
As the victim described how her uncle had raped her when she was intoxicated and at her weakest, she was unable to contain her tears.
She also described how her father learnt that her child, now five years old, was the child of Peter, a close relative, and how her other uncles denied the abuse before seeking assistance recently.
It was also revealed to viewers that her mother knew but did nothing about it.
The victim has a second child and is now married.
When the uncle admitted, he said, “Yes ndakangomupindira mumagumbeze” (I did sneak into her blankets and rape her), and he treated it as stupidity.
