ZIMBABWE’s hospitals have been raided by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority in ways that will see millions of patients failing to access medical treatment from July this year.
Zimra has made sudden demands that every hospital, clinic and medical institution must now pay tax on every unpaid medical claim in their books of accounts (even though unpaid).
Frustrating the already struggling hospitals’ and clinics’ bank accounts, the impact of the raid will be like a bomb affecting every clinic and health institution across the country in catastrophic ways that will leave millions without access to vital health care, analysts warned.
Most workers are on medical aid provided by Premier Services Medical Aid, CIMAS and other health insurance companies.
The Zim Medical Association has issued a warning that from the 1st July, hospitals, private doctors, clinics and other health providers “are to stop accepting medical aid as they have to pay tax on unpaid medical claims…”


As government coffers continue to shrink, the Zimra has intensified its raids on companies, which is speeding up company closures, dealing a further blow to the near comatose economy.
The authority which has so far garnished over US$50 million from companies in the diamond other sectors, and several companies, most of which are struggling, had not until this year turned its “armoury” onto the nation’s health care industry. ZimEye Discussion:  ⚡Should any nation charge tax on medical care?

    are not paying despite charging clients @ 15% vat
    for services rendered thru duty free equipment & drugs. This jessie

  9. Somehow. The article is not clear. Which tax are they referring to? Is it VAT, Corporate tax, Capital Gains tax, PAYE? In my view only VAT is directly related to the outstanding payments from customers(Medical Aid Societies) and medical services are Exempt. Give us your facts @ Tete Vaneshanje.

  16. Misleading. These institutions’ services are exempt from value added tax which is directly linked to receipts from customers and payment to suppliers. If its corporate tax and PAYE we all pay that and is not directly linked to receipts from medical Aid Societies.
