Mnangagwa: The Definition Of Terror In Zimbabwe

13-06-2021

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s naked lie of branding the People’s Movement, MDC Alliance as a terrorist group must never go unchallenged.

We all know that by branding the MDC Alliance as a terrorist group, Mnangagwa seeks to chlorinate arbitrary arrests, pre-trial detentions, abductions, rape, torture, murder and all sorts of evils his regime is committing against the people of Zimbabwe, particularly those opposed to his dictatorship.

As he was correctly described by ZANU PF Spokesperson, Simon Khaya Moyo upon his dismissal from that party in 2017, Mnangagwa is a “dishonest” , “divisive” and “deceptive” character.

When he says the opposition is “anti-people” and “anti-democratic”, it is a classic case of a hyena accusing goats of devouring her cubs. The intention is to wipe out all the goats under the pretext of protecting her cubs!

Mnangagwa is the same man who lied to the whole nation that he is “as soft as wool” and the next thing he unleashes the military in broad daylight to butcher unarmed civilians on 01 August 2018.

Zimbabweans know the real merchants of terror in this country.

They know very well that Emmerson Mnangagwa is the face of genocidal terror attacks that threatened to wipe out the entire population of Matabeleland and parts of Midlands from 1983-87 when he was the Minister of State Security.

We, the MDC Alliance are the end receivers of the terror at hands of a terrorist ZANU PF government fronted by Mnangagwa.

We are not the ones who took over the country via a bloody coup. We are not the ones who murdered innocent people in the bloody 2002 and June 2008 elections.

We are not the ones who have been kidnapping, torturing and disappearing citizens like what happened to Itai Dzamara, Cecilia Chimbiri, Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova etc.

We are not the ones who subverted the people’s will by rigging the 2018 elections.

We are not the ones who are violently destroying people’s livelihoods by destroying informal traders’ vending sites as is currently happening in Chitungwiza and Harare.

We are the ones fighting for people’s livelihoods by defending the rights of the people like we did in Chilonga.

We are the ones who are defending the rights of the poor vendors. We are the ones fighting for the defense of our constitution and rule of law.

We possess no guns nor knobkerries but our strength lies in the people.

Questions And Answers On COVID-19 Vaccines

Questions and Answers on COVID-19 vaccines

Q: How have the vaccines been developed so quickly? Does this mean that their safety and efficacy has been compromised?

A: The speed of development of COVID-19 vaccines has been unprecedented for several reasons, but the safety and efficacy requirements for vaccines have not been compromised, Vaccine development was facilitated by:

The massive financial investment by governments, industry and philanthropic organisations in vaccine development and the re-direction of much of the global research and commercial infrastructure for the development and manufacture of vaccines. Governments also enabled companies to take the commercial risk of manufacturing some vaccine stocks ahead of regulatory approvals.

New technologies adapted from the development of other vaccines – mRNA vaccines were developed for COVID-19 very rapidly after the sequence of the COVID-19 virus was determined, but the underlying technology had been under development since much longer and production could be scaled up very quickly. The adenovirus technology used for adenovirus vector vaccines was first tested with SARS, MERS and Ebola virus over the last 20 years, and so was able to be adapted quickly to COVID-19, which has several similarities to these viruses.

Clinical trial successes – it has been possible to rapidly recruit large numbers of volunteers into clinical trials and, with unfortunately high rates of infection in several countries, to complete trials with 10,000-50,000 people in a short period of time. Under normal circumstances, it may take many months or even a few years to carry out trials of this size to determine whether a vaccine is effective.
Very close collaboration – between regulators, industry and clinical researchers enabled clear indications of regulatory requirements and early access to results.

Intensive and insightful research – researchers predicted that the “spike protein” on the virus would be a good target for vaccine development, and almost all vaccines have been designed to induce a response to this protein. So far, the spike protein has produced a strong immune response in those vaccinated, and for those vaccines that have reported clinical results are highly protective from COVID-19 disease.
Q: Will mRNA vaccines affect the DNA of vaccine recipients?

A: No. The mRNA in the vaccine has not been shown to incorporate itself into the genes of vaccine recipients and breaks down in the weeks after vaccination. mRNA vaccines contain genetic instructions for our cells, which only read them and provide copies of the SARS-CoV2 spike protein. This enables the body’s natural immune systems to cause a response in vaccine recipients if they are later exposed to the virus.

Q: How long will COVID-19 vaccination provide protection for immunised people?

A: We do not yet know how long protection from any of these vaccines lasts. We will get better insights over the next 12 months.

The duration of protection provided by vaccines can vary. For example, the seasonal influenza vaccine is given annually, because the influenza virus mutates, and protection wanes over a number of months. Other vaccines, such as those for rubella or measles provide multi-year or even life-long protection from disease. Mutations in key viral proteins can mean that virus variants emerge. The SARS-CoV-2-coronavirus is prone to mutations that creates variants, some of which have become established in a number of regions of the world. The scientific community and regulators are very actively monitoring whether the current vaccines can continue protecting people from infection with new variants.
A number of vaccine developers are currently developing vaccines against the range of variants, and it is likely that booster shots with these vaccines will increase protection against known variants. Regulators have agreed that review of data on vaccines against variants will be facilitated based on assessment of immune response to the variant, in the same way that new seasonal influenza vaccines are evaluated each year.
Q: Why are there so many vaccine candidates?

A: As the global seriousness of the pandemic became rapidly apparent, development of effective vaccines for COVID-19 became the top priority of many pharmaceutical companies and medical research institutes. There was also unprecedented government and private sector investment in vaccine development. There is now a wide range of technologies for developing new vaccines – and many of the organisations developing COVID-19 vaccines have particular experience in one or more of these technologies. This has ensured that there would still be vaccines available if some were not approved for reasons of efficacy, safety or manufacturing challenges.

Q: What if many people start getting a reaction from a particular COVID-19 vaccine?

A: Short-term reactions, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue or headache are common following any vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines. These reactions usually pass in a day or two. If new evidence becomes available that suggests that a specific serious adverse event may be linked to a particular COVID-19 vaccine then regulators will take action, working collaboratively on a global basis and liaise with public health authorities. The type of actions that can be taken depend on the nature of the adverse event, and could range from issuing safety warnings for patients, healthcare professionals and the community; updating the product information or consumer information for the vaccine to show contraindications for the use in particular patients (e.g. those with certain co-morbidities); to closely monitoring adverse events in certain groups of patients; preventing the release of a particular batch of vaccine through to temporary suspension of the use of the vaccine until more is known.

Q: How are regulators speeding up the time it takes to authorise a COVID-19 vaccine?

A: Many regulators globally have implemented faster access pathways for COVID-19 vaccines, without compromising on strict standards of safety, quality and efficacy.

Some countries have Emergency Use Authorisation pathways which assess the available data at the time of authorisation. Exercising these provisions is a matter for those countries, taking into account the benefits versus risks in the context of the prevailing domestic pandemic situation. Different countries may coin this pathway or authorisation routes differently but essentially, they follow the same principles.
Other countries have implemented accelerated/priority, conditional or provisional approval schemes.

Under normal circumstances, regulatory assessment begins once all information to support registration is available. For COVID-19 vaccines, many regulators have agreed to accept data on a rolling basis to enable early evaluation of data as it becomes available. Regulators will only be in a position to make a provisional approval decision for a vaccine once there is sufficient data to support adequately the safety, quality and effectiveness of the vaccine for its intended use. If a decision is made to grant provisional or conditional approval, it will be based on the requirement for the sponsor to submit more comprehensive, longer term clinical data, stability data and other information with agreed timelines.
Q: Did our country approve this COVID-19 vaccine, or are we relying on another country’s approval?

A: Most countries are carrying out independent regulatory evaluations on the submitted data for each vaccine. However, to ensure a more efficient use of resources and expertise, regulators in different countries are communicating closely on safety, efficacy and quality data and discussing technical issues as they may arise. In many cases principles of WHO Good Reliance Practices and collaborative mechanisms leverage the output of other regulators.

Q: Why weren’t very rare blood clots with low platelets with the AstraZeneca or Janssen vaccines picked up during clinical trials?

A: Thromboembolic events with concurrent thrombocytopenia are very rare – with estimates based on the number of spontaneous reports suggesting an overall incidence on the order of 10-15 cases per million doses. The clinical trials of these vaccines included large numbers of people, often with 10,000 to 20,000 individuals in the active vaccine arms, but even in trials of this size it was statistically unlikely that such very rare events would be detected. This shows the importance of continual safety monitoring during the use of these vaccines, to allow very rare events to be detected and investigated further.

NGO Launches Voter Registration Campaign In Masvingo

COTRAD Kick-starts Voter Registration Campaign in Masvingo Province.

Community Tolerance Reconciliation and Development (COTRAD) has launched a massive voter registration mobilization campaign in Masvingo Province through online and offline platforms.

The campaign which is mainly targeting young men and women especially those who are reaching voting age and therefore are facing their first opportunity to vote (First Time Voter).

Broadly, the campaign also targets aliens and the older people who, have not voted previously despite being eligible to do so to go and register at their local Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) district and provincial offices.

The campaign is being unrolled through go register to vote community meetings, online platforms, television and radio programs, bulk messages, circulation of jingles and electronic fliers on whatsApp groups and other social media platforms and servicing of information centres with printed IEC content containing voter education material.

While, COTRAD voter clubs members educate and mobilize their peers to register as voters through checking out if their eligible family members, neighbours, friends, workmates or even girlfriends and boyfriends have registered to vote.

The campaign also aims to explore voter registration requirements and procedures as stipulated by the Zimbabwe electoral laws.

Voter registration after the 2018 harmonised elections has been taking place at a sluggish pace, considering the fact that thousands of youths became eligible to vote after the previous plebiscite.

In Masvingo only six people registered to vote in May 2021.

Therefore, COTRAD has begun the campaign to educate young people about their role as citizens, their rights and responsibilities, the importance of voting, and how best to make voter choices and hold those they vote for accountable between elections.

COTRAD official Ishmael Kupfuwa said:

Section 17A of the Electoral Act states that voter registration shall be conducted on a continuous basis so as to keep the voters rolls up-to date. Therefore, every person claiming to be a voter shall be entitled, at any time while the voters roll is open, to lodge a claim for registration as a voter or for the transfer of registration as a voter. Aliens are also encouraged to register to vote in accordance with the electoral laws.

The ZEC has been open for voter registration since the end of the 2018 harmonised elections except during the hard lockdown period.

The level of participation of youth in electoral processes is worrying despite the fact that youth represent over 60% of the national population.

If too many young people neglect their right to vote, in turn, this can lead to them to becoming a marginalized group. COTRAD shall keep on imploring ZEC to intensifying voter mobilization and education programmes so that citizens especially the youth can develop more interest in registering as voters and also actively participate in electoral processes.

Bev Goes Public Over Cheating Hubby

By Showbiz Reporter| Barely a year after marriage, the pole dancer Bev Sibanda has gone public to speak about her husband, Chambuka Mufudzi.

Chambuka Mufudzi, who last year claimed that he is a UK-based Zimbabwean doctor, was exposed by ZimEye as this paper revealed that he is a mental health nurse, instead.

Beverley Sibanda

Their union was solemnised at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts in June last year.

Speaking in various occasions last week, Bev alleged she is being neglected. She also laid several claims previously raised to her husband on ZimEye.

She also alleged that he has been sending out audio messages accusing her of witchcraft.

“He appears as if he cares for me, but it’s not true, and he has also been sending out audio messages saying that I bewitched him into loving him,” she said.

Desist From Unnecessary Theories And Conclusions About TB Joshua’s Death, Says Sekuru Banda

Celebrated Zimbabwean traditional healer Sekuru Banda has urged society to desist from making unnecessary theories and conclusions around the death of Nigerian televangelist Temitope Balogun Joshua popularly known as TB Joshua who died last week.

Speaking to ZimEye, Sekuru Banda dismissed circulating narratives about TB Joshua’s death saying those seeking publicity were drifting away from African values and culture.

He also lashed at a Ghanaian traditional healer Nana Kwaku Bonson who is claiming to have bewitched TB Joshua dismissing his remarks as only a publicity stunt.

“We should not seek answers when a person dies. Death is God’s time. Let’s not seek fame and publicity from someone’s death. God is the ultimate judge. Let’s abandon the culture of being judgmental when a prominent figure dies as in the case of this Ghanaian traditional healer” Sekuru Banda said.

“When God created us, each one of us was given a timeline, so death is God’s time lets not look for answers when a person dies, lets not talk too much about the deceased persons or seek to gain publicity, God is the final arbiter not us,” added Sekuru Banda.

The philantropist traditional healer expressed concern on the erosion of African cultural values saying instead of respecting the deceased, people were speaking ill of TB Joshua.

“I am not supporting TB Joshua but I am just concerned that people nowadays speak ill of a deceased person and this particular case, they never said those things when he was still alive,” said Sekuru Banda.

The influential Nigerian preacher died on 5 June at the age of 57. The cause of his death was not revealed.

Zanu PF Manicaland Dogged By Factionalism

ACTING Zanu-PF political commissar Patrick Chinamasa yesterday confirmed deep factionalism in Manicaland province, leading to an emergency meeting to address the problems.

Chinamasa made the remarks in Rusape yesterday while addressing a Makoni district development co-ordinating committee (DCC) meeting with various stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe economist John Mafararikwa, who was the guest of honour.

Makoni DCC chairperson Albert Nyakuedzwa chaired the meeting where Chinamasa decried divisions in Nyanga, Mutare and Chipinge districts.

He said they had since met with the warring factions in two districts.

“Unity is important in the party, we need unity to develop. Recently, we were in Nyanga and we met leaders there over factionalism and the meeting ended at 1am as we tried to get things right,” Chinamasa said.

“Last week, we were in Mutare to deal with divisions and we have since identified people who are involved and if they fail to reform, we will take action against them.

“We were supposed to be in Chipinge this weekend, but there were other pressing issues. We are going to speak to individuals who are causing divisions in these three districts,” he said.

Chinamasa hailed Makoni district for leading by example.

“I am happy that here in Makoni district, we are united and this is good for the party,” he said.

Mutare reportedly has two factions; one led by Zanu-PF provincial chairperson Mike Madiro, and the other by Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri.

Nyakuedzwa said the party was going to undertake several developmental projects in the area.

“I am happy with the unity in the district, we are going to hold such developmental meetings in the constituency in the future,” he said.

Chiwenga Defends Sekai Nzenza Over Breaching Of COVID-19 Rules

Vice President and Health and Childcare Minister Constantino Chiwenga has defended the continued defiance of COVID-19 protocols by cabinet ministers at a time when the government has put in place strict COVID-19 measures.

Recently, Industry and Commerce minister Sekai Nzenza and senior officials from her office posed for pictures with delegates from India, a COVID-19 hotspot, without wearing face masks and without observing social distancing.

But responding to questions from NewsDay on why some ministers are not observing COVID-19 protocols, Chiwenga attempted to justify the officials’ wayward behaviour. He said:

You have seen people without masks when we go for photoshoots. We take off masks during that time. I don’t think that is being irresponsible.

However, former Health minister Henry Madzorera (MDC), described the goverment as “hypocritical” for defending the reckless behaviour of senior government officials at a time when the country is staring at the third wave. Said Madzorera:

They are hypocrites. They don’t follow their own rules and you will see that at funerals. You noticed the complacency exhibited during the unveiling of the Mbuya Nehanda statue.
We said people coming from India should be quarantined for 10 days, but the delegation just came in, there was no quarantine, they posed for pictures, there were no precautions taken.

Chiwenga on Saturday announced a ban on gatherings, churches, sports and music following an increase in COVID-19 cases in the last seven days.

596 new cases and 26 deaths were recorded last week and Chiwenga has accused ordinary Zimbabweans of being complacent.

ED Gags Party Stalwarts

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has banned disgruntled party officials and war veterans from speaking to the media and using social media to express their displeasure, a practice he said was tantamount to indiscipline.

“Each and every one of us must strengthen, promote and defend the party and its government and popularise its policies in the communities that you live in. Where members have views and inputs to make things better, the right channels and forums must be approached from the village to the central committee,” Mnangagwa said on Saturday while addressing war veterans.

“The trend of discussing party and sector issues in the media is totally unacceptable in the revolutionary party. If you differ with someone, why rush to social media? Why rush to the newspapers? Is there any newspaper that carried the gun? Did you have social media during the war?”

He said during the liberation struggle, the fighters used to heed calls by their commanders to instil discipline in them.

“These commanders like (Vice-President Constantino) Chiwenga during the war would discipline people and people would follow the party line. After a thorough discipline you would stand and chant a slogan. It is this discipline that has kept us going,” Mnangagwa said.

“Unity and loyalty to the party and its leadership are fundamental as we continue to build and modernise our colossal revolutionary mass party to meet the aspirations of present and future generations.”

Resettled Farmers Booted Out As Farm’s Original Owner Returns

By A Correspondent- Over 400 newly-resettled farmers in the Maganga near Marondera, were last week evicted to pave way for the return of the farm’s original owner, Hunyani Estate.

The farmers were evicted by the Messenger of Court, who, armed with a court order, forcibly removed and dumped their property along the Harare-Mutare railway line.

One of the evicted farmers, Sphiwe Siyawamwaya, who spoke to NewsDay said they are now living in the open.

He said:

We woke up to realise that we were surrounded by riot police in the company of a Messenger of Court telling us to leave.

They ferried our goods including our crops and dumped us here. We do not have anywhere to go. We are told that this land belongs to Hunyani Estate.

In 2017, officials from the Lands ministry told us that they will allocate 200 hectares of land to us, but today it is another story.

Life is hard for us here, considering that we are living in the open.

ZANU PF Marondera district secretary for lands, Richmore Chikore said they were aware of the crisis.

NewsDay could not get a comment from Marondera district development co-coordinator Clement Masawi as his mobile phone went unanswered.

The Maganga area is in ward 23, about 20km east of Marondera town.

The area is located in the tourism-rich area where the Benard Mizeki shrine and Tsindi Ruins are located.

FULL TEXT- BONA MUGABE CHIKORE’S MESSAGE ON MARRIAGE

Bona Mugabe Chikore

The world is full of women but only few wives”. Many women don’t know that being a woman does not necessarily mean you can be a wife to a man.

There are certain qualities that qualifies a woman to be a good wife to the husband she’s married to. Some men break up their relationships or marriages because they later found out that the woman they are living with is not yet a wife.

The wedding will give you the title wife, but to your husband the things you do will determine whether he’s married to a woman or a wife.

This is why the bible says ” he that finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord”, meaning you can get a woman and still not find a wife.

Looking at the acronym of the word wife, we’ll discover certain characters that makes every woman a good wife for her husband.

WIFEW : WISE – Every wife is a wise woman like Abigail. She advices her husband about many things that will affect their future, family, children, finances and the like.

They look into the future and not the present. In fact, any woman who is always concerned about the present and doesn’t talk about the future is not yet a wife. Because if they are wise they give the due respect to their husbands knowing they are the head of the relationship and don’t compete with them.

I : INDUSTRIOUS – Every wife is a hardworking person. They are always willing to work and help their husbands. They don’t want their husbands to shoulder all the family load alone, but try as much as possible to give a helping hand.

In fact, they are not consumers but rather contributors. Their work starts from the home, they are not lazy and do not require the supervision of their husbands before cleaning, cooking, washing or attending to their responsibilities. The truth is they love work.

F : FAITHFUL – Every wife is a faithful partner, they love their husbands and only him. They love their husbands in both good and bad times. They are not like other women whose love grows when they see success and money and vanish when there is hardships. They will never share themselves secretly or privately with other men at workplaces or church behind their husbands.

E : ENDURE – Every good wife is a gift from God and what makes them stand out is their ability to stick to their husbands till the end. They come into the marriage to love you irrespective of what comes your way and are willing to stand with their husbands to face the odds of life. They don’t care about your beginning, they are only interested in the vision of the man and where he’s going in life. Because they know that right men have vision and know where they are going.

If you are a man and find such a woman never let her go.

AS A WOMAN CAN THESE CHARACTERISTICS BE SEEN IN YOU? CAN YOUR MAN SAY WITH CONFIDENCE, I HAVE FOUND A WIFE? IF NOT ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO START LEARNING AND BRANDING YOURSELF FOR A BETTER FUTURE. WOMEN ARE BORN BUT A WIFE IS A GIFT FROM GOD.

Mwonzora, Admits Meeting Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has admitted meeting with Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The two secretly met at the statehouse over an undisclosed agenda.

Some MDC-T leaders say Mwonzora kept them in the dark about the meeting held at State House in Harare.

Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga also attended the meeting that was curiously not covered by the state-controlled media, which usually follows Mnangagwa’s engagements with the Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) religiously.

Polad is a platform where the president engages leaders of fringe political parties that took part in the 2018 presidential elections, including MDC-T.

Thokozani Khupe represented MDC-T in Polad before her ouster by Mwonzora in December last year.

The new MDC-T leader had said he would not take part in Polad meetings as he preferred broader dialogue to resolve Zimbabwe’s multiple political and economic problems.

Mwonzora at the weekend told The Standard that he had gone to State House to pay a courtesy call on Mnangagwa.

“There were two things,” he said. “The thing was that I went to pay a courtesy call as leader of the opposition in Parliament to the president and head of state.

“The second one was to deliver the MDC’s concrete proposals for dialogue as I was instructed by the congress.

“The meeting was cordial and respectful.

“The president, who was accompanied by the vice-president undertook to reply to our proposals after which we would have formal discussions on the matter.”

He, however, refused to disclose the MDC-T’s proposals, saying he was waiting for Mnangagwa’s response.

“Currently I am not at liberty to disclose the proposals because they are yet to be responded to, but they were procedural matters as well as substantive matters,” he added.

A senior MDC-T official accused Mwonzora of going to State House clandestinely as the matter was never discussed during the party’s recent meetings.

“We are all asking ourselves what was really so important about this meeting, which was kept away from everyone,” the official said.

“Something could really be fishy here.”

But Mwonzora defended himself, saying he was mandated by the MDC-T national council to pursue dialogue with Mnangagwa.

He said some of his party’s leaders were not available for the meeting on Friday.

“Well, leaders of my party were away on parliamentary business,” the opposition leader claimed.

“This is criticism coming from people who have failed to execute their mandate.

“I was directed by the MDC national council to pursue dialogue for the benefit of the people of Zimbabwe and I did just that.”

Some Polad members are also unhappy that Mnangagwa is seemingly going back on his word not to hold any talks outside the controversial Polad platform.

“We did not have a meeting today and if what you are saying happened, it had nothing to do with Polad,” said a Polad member, who requested to remain anonymous.

“That then raises questions on why Mwonzora, if indeed he is keen to dialogue, would secretly meet Mnangagwa who is also a principal under Polad? What then is the role of Polad?

“We suspect there is an unholy alliance going on here and parallel arrangements are- coming up.

“We will wait and see, but this is not what we expected from the two. We expect people to be transparent and to do things in good faith.”

Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa referred questions about the meeting between Mnangagwa and Mwonzora to the president’s spokesperson George Charamba.

Charamba was not picking calls yesterday.

Mwonzora and MDC-T deny allegations that they are being used by Mnangagwa and Zanu PF to fight the mainstream MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa.

The MDC Alliance says Zanu PF is using state institutions such as the courts and the police to aid MDC-T in its bid to position itself as the main opposition party in Zimbabwe.

Mwonzora, Mnangagwa In-Unity Government Talks

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora last Friday held a private meeting where the two are said to have discussed about forming a unity government.

Over 60 Bulawayo Pupils Impregnated By Gold Panners, Drop Out Of School

By A Correspondent- At least 63 girls in Bulawayo dropped out of school after being impregnated, while about 40 pupils were also impregnated by gold panners in Ntabazinduza within a year.

Sunday News understands that although various campaigns have been carried out against child sexual abuse, the practice was still rampant and every year many girls are forced to drop out of school after falling pregnant.

According to Zimbabwean laws, sexual intercourse with anyone below the age of 16 is a criminal offence, yet the majority of schoolgirls who fell pregnant fall below the age of consent.

Bulawayo provincial education director Mrs Olicah Kaira told a meeting hosted by the Matabeleland Council for the Welfare of the Child last week that since March last year when the country went into Covid-19 induced lockdown, at least 63 girls dropped out of school in the city after falling pregnant. However, in 2020, the Government amended the Education Act to allow pregnant girls back in class but reports indicate that a few girls were returning to school, as they have to assume motherly roles.

According to Mrs Kaira, last term, Bulawayo saw three girls drop out of school due to pregnancies, while one 12-year-old pupil committed suicide during the term.

“As a ministry in Bulawayo we received three cases reported of unintended pregnancies this term alone and we think there could be more unreported cases. Since the onset of the lockdown the total number of cases now stands at 63.

We also received a report of a 12-year-old who committed suicide, investigations conducted by the ministry revealed that the situation at home where the child lived could have influenced the suicide,” she said.
She also said school authorities were battling with increased drug abuse.
“The ministry is also battling the issue of drugs and substance abuse. Some children are bringing the drugs to school and when they are questioned the pupils say that the drugs will be coming from parents who ask them to sell at school.”

In a related incident, more than 40 girls have also dropped out of school after they were impregnated by gold panners at Mbelesini in Ntabazinduna, Umguza District in Matabeleland North province. Sunday News visited the area last week where officials and parents told of chaos that has been brought by marauding gold panners.
“Not only have gold panners allegedly been having affairs with school girls, they have also invaded people’s farms and homes in search of the yellow metal. Ward Six councillor Alexander Mnkandla said most of the girls were below the age of 18 years.
“I can’t really say the exact number but I know at least 40 girls who have dropped out of school due to these pregnancies and it is sad because the responsible people are gold miners who disappear after getting the girls pregnant,” said Clr Mnkandla.
He said in some cases girls were as young as 12 years.
“Most of the girls are lured by money and they do not even know the dangers they are involving themselves in until they get pregnant and forced to drop out of school.”
Clr Mnkandla said the community has tried to find a solution but the major problem was that most of the panners were aggressive and were not locals.
“We have resorted to public meetings for girls at school to be educated about the right to education and information on the use of contraceptives. Early sexual engagement also increases the risk of girls suffering cervical cancer which is one of the leading killer diseases, especially among women hence our children must be educated first about abstinence. It is very difficult for us, as the village we have appealed to the police but nothing concrete has been done. At night it is very dangerous to go out as the panners will be carrying dangerous weapons and making noise while shouting insults. We are living in fear,” he said.
He said most of the panners were reportedly from Binga, Kwekwe and Harare.
“The illegal gold panners are also destroying the environment. They are digging everywhere they think there is gold. They are digging everywhere in our backyards, even graves and we fear they are going to leave this place seriously degraded,” said the councillor.
Meanwhile, six schools in Bulawayo received mobile science equipment donated by Laboratory Equipment and Consumables (LEO BIO-TEC) as part of its Save Our Souls family strengthening programme. Babambeni, Godlwayo, Ingwegwe, and Ntshamathe primary schools each received a mobile laboratory worth US$2 500 while Magwegwe and Amhlophe High Schools each received protective clothing to use when conducting science experiments.

Mhofu Mourns Yogi

By A Correspondent- Renowned soccer coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa has sent his condolence message to the Mandigora familly following the passing on of former Dynamos legend and 1980 Soccer Star of the Year David “Yogi” Mandigora, who died in Harare yesterday.
He was 64.

Chidzambwa, one of Mandigora’s closest friends, describe his death as a huge loss to both Dynamos and Zimbabwe.

He said Yogi’s death had dealt a double blow to the Mandigora family, who also lost his elder sister two weeks ago and are in the process of repatriating her body from the United Kingdom.

“We played together at Dynamos and in the national team, and he was always my roommate whenever we went into camp for both teams.
“It so happened that after we were both injured, we decided to venture into coaching.

“His death is a very sad loss to Zimbabwean football and to Dynamos. He did very well with Dynamos at home and in the Champions League, where he reached the semi-finals.

“Yogi was a humble guy, a quiet man who would always focus on what he would be doing,’’ Chidzambwa said.

The country’s most successful coach said it was a saddening development that “death continues to rob us of our legends and experienced people whose wisdom we can always tap from”.

“It is unfortunate that there is nothing we can do… maybe it is God’s wish. Asi rufu chinhu chisinga jairike inasmuch as we have to live with it,’’ he said.

MDC Alliance Exposes Mnangagwa Lies

EU Piles Pressure On Mnangagwa To Implement Reforms

The European Union (EU) has warned President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration that the bloc cannot fully engage with Harare unless it institutes far-reaching political and economic reforms.

In a statement following a closed-door meeting between the government and representatives of the delegation of the European Union to Zimbabwe, the EU said it made it clear to Harare that respect for human rights was key for the normalisation of relations. The statement read in part:

The EU and its membership expressed concern over a curtailed democratic space in Zimbabwe over the last year and reports of continued violations of human rights such as reported cases of enforced disappearances, and lengthy unjustified detentions, arrests of journalists and other limitations to the freedom of expression and the media.

The EU urged government to conduct impartial investigations of human rights violations and bring perpetrators to justice.

At the meeting, which was held in Harare on Thursday, Zimbabwe was represented by Foreign Affairs and International Trade minister Frederick Shava while EU head of delegation to Zimbabwe, Timo Olkkonen was joined by ambassadors of EU Member States, France, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, The Netherlands, Spain and Romania.

The meeting allowed for the continuation of discussions on topics that are of common interest and are priorities in EU-Zimbabwe relations, among them, human rights, democratisation, rule of law and good governance, economic development and investment climate.

The EU early this year extended by a further year sanctions it imposed on Harare, initially in 2002, arguing that they would remain in place until the government stops rampant human rights abuses and a vicious clampdown on dissent.-NewsDay

Christian Eriksen In Stable Condition

Denmark’s attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen has been “stabilised” after being taken to hospital following his sudden collapse on the pitch of Parken Stadium during his country’s Euro 2020 game against Finland.

UEFA, the football tournament’s ruling body, said in a Twitter post the 29-year-old “has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised” after Saturday’s incident in Copenhagen. It said:

Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.

Denmark’s football body said on Twitter Eriksen was “conscious” and undergoing tests.

The Inter Milan attacker fell to the ground, free of contact, near the sideline late in the first half.

He was immediately surrounded by medical staff who began pumping his chest as distraught teammates formed a ring around him.

After around 15 minutes, Eriksen was stretchered off the field followed by the rest of his teammates, while Finland’s players also left the pitch.

The 16 000 fans in the stadium sat silently in their seats waiting for news of Eriksen’s condition to filter through.- Al Jazeera

Horror As Five Die In Gutu Accident

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the death of five people in an accident that occurred along Chivhu-Gutu road.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi told the national broadcaster that the accident occurred when an Inter-Africa bus collided with a Honda Stream vehicle while trying to overtake another bus.

The head-on collision occurred near Matizha Business Centre in Gutu District on Saturday morning.

A motorist who arrived soon after the accident said he took one of the survivors to Matizha Clinic.

Eyewitnesses told Masvingo Mirror that an Inter-Africa bus was trying to overtake another bus when it encroached into the lane of the oncoming Honda Stream.

The Honda Stream swerved off the road but the bus did the same and they collided.

Last year the government banned private commuter omnibuses (kombis) resulting in little non-commercial vehicles (4 passengers) overloading passengers to fill in the void in the transport sector.

The transport sector is now dominated by Mushikashika vehicles which although they have capacities of 4 passengers are carrying as many as nine passengers.- Masvingo Mirror

Chiwenga Announces New Measures To Curb Spread Of COVID-19

MEASURES TO CURB THE SURGE OF COVID-19

  1. Fellow Zimbabweans, the country has done very well in terms of curbing the spread of Covid 19. In addition, our vaccination against Covid 19 is going on very well.

The country is however experiencing a surge in cases. The last 7 seven days have seen 596 new cases and 26 deaths as compared to the same period in May 2021 where we had 132 new cases and 6 deaths.

This is a more than 4-fold increase in new cases and deaths. Sadly it has been noted that there has been a general complacency in adhering to the preventative measures both in the communities and workplaces.

We are also witnessing a sharp increase in cases and deaths globally and in the SADC region. In order to curb this surge in cases and deaths in Zimbabwe and prevent a potential 3rd wave, the following measures will be implemented effective Monday 14 June 2021.

  1. There will be stricter enforcement of the following preventive measures:
    – mandatory wearing of masks in public places.
    – maintaining social and physical distancing
    – washing or sanitising your hands frequently

3) Government will strengthen testing and contact tracing as well as quarantining contacts and isolating confirmed cases.

4) Regarding public transport, the operators are to adhere to recommended passenger numbers. They should ensure that all passengers are wearing their face masks properly.

On boarding, they must have their temperature checked and their hands sanitized. Public transport operators shall disinfect their vehicles after every trip.

5) With regards to gatherings, the following measures are to be implemented:
– All gatherings except funerals are banned. These gatherings include but are not limited to weddings, church gatherings, music festivals and sports activities.
– Funerals shall be limited to 30 people. All Covid 19 funerals will be supervised by health personnel.
– All workshops and meetings are to be held virtually. In addition, all offices, both government and private, are to decongest by 50% (except for offices connected with essential services)

6) With regards to retail businesses and shops, their operating hours shall be from 0800 hours to 1800 hours.

It is expected that the operators ensure that there is strict adherence to preventive measures such as the proper wearing of face masks, sanitizing and temperature checks of clients.

They should also ensure that they limit the number of clients in their shops to maintain physical distancing.

Beer halls and nightclubs will remain closed whilst bottle stores will operate from 1000 hours – 1600 hours.

Operators should ensure that there is no drinking in and around their premises. Failure to adhere to these measures will result in the withdrawal of business licenses.

Hotel and lodge bars and restaurants are open to their residents up to 2200 hours. All other restaurants and fast foods outlets will serve takeaways only.

7) With regards to people’s market places such as but not limited to Mbare, Renkin, Mupedzanhamo, Sakubva, Machipisa and others, they shall close at 1800 hours.

The operators shall ensure strict adherence to preventive measures such as the proper wearing of face masks, sanitizing, social distancing and temperature checks of their clients. Non-compliance will result in the closure of that market.

Our health inspectors and other law enforcement agents will move around and monitor compliance with these measures. Failure to adhere to these measures will result in the withdrawal of the business licenses.

8) With regards to tobacco auction floors, the owners must ensure strict adherence to preventive measures such as the proper wearing of face masks, temperature checks and sanitizing of clients and maintaining physical distancing.

Each consignment of tobacco bales to be accompanied by at most 2 people into the auction floor. Targeted vaccination of tobacco farmers and their workers will be available.

Tobacco auction floor employees are required to have a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen test which will be valid for 2 weeks. Vending within and around the tobacco floors is prohibited.

Our health inspectors and other law enforcement agencies shall be monitoring for compliance. Failure to adhere to these measures will result in the closure of that particular auction floor.

9) At all ports of entry there shall be strict enforcement of the 48-hour old PCR negative certificate requirement and mandatory testing of all travellers from hot spots at their expense regardless of their negative PCR certificates.

There shall be quarantining of those coming from hot spots in designated quarantine centres at their own expense. Those who present with fake COVID-19 negative certificates shall be arrested and prosecuted.

10) With regards to the management of local hot spots, the following measures shall be implemented:
a) There will be daily national updates of hot spots as part of the daily COVID-19 situational report
b) The public is being advised not to travel to these hot spots areas

Ndiraya Dedicates Chibuku Super Cup Win To David Yogi Mandigora

Dynamos coach Tonderai Ndiraya dedicated their Saturday’s 1-0 win against Harare City to club legend David Mandigora who passed on hours before the kick-off.

The 1980 Soccer Star of the Year died in Harare at the age of 64. He played for DeMbare’s senior team from the late 70s before coaching the side and guided it to the semifinals of the Champions League in 2008.

Speaking after the match, Ndiraya also remembered the nine DeMbare supporters who died in an accident in Gweru in 2016 on their way to a match.

“We received sad news before kick-off about the passing away of one of our legends, David Mandigora,” the coach said.

“We dedicate this win to him and of cause the nine supporters who perished in 2016 in Gweru on their way to support us.”

Dynamos got the win courtesy of a second half solitary strike from King Nadolo. The result extended their lead at the top of Group 1 with 11 points.

“I’m satisfied with the result and how the team defended, especially in the second half when Harare City were throwing everything on us,” Ndiraya added.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

World Health Organization, WeChat Join Hands In Efforts To Combat Tobacco Smoking

WHO Director-General Special Awards for World No Tobacco Day announced: Minister of Health India and University of Bath for exceptional achievement in tobacco control.

Smokers face a 40 – 50% higher risk of developing severe disease and death from COVID-19.

WHO partners with Viber, WhatsApp, FB Messenger, WeChat and AI company Soul Machines to reach billions with free digital quitting tobacco aids.

The World Health Organization’s ‘Commit to Quit’ tobacco campaign has made resources from its Quitting Toolkit freely available to more than a billion tobacco users, less than 5 months into the year-long campaign.

WHO launched the campaign to support those millions of tobacco users who are actively taking steps to save their lives, but still need help to succeed.

The campaign is currently working directly with 29 focus countries. Each country agreed with WHO on selected activities, including, running national awareness campaigns, releasing new digital tools, revising policies, engaging youth, training health workers, opening new cessation clinics, supporting nicotine replacement therapies through WHO partners, establishing national toll-free quit lines, making quitting courses available, and more.

“Smokers have up to a 50% higher risk of developing severe disease and death from COVID-19, so quitting is best thing smokers can do to lower their risk from this coronavirus, as well as the risk of developing cancers, heart disease and respiratory illnesses,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “We urge all countries to play their part by joining the WHO campaign and creating tobacco-free environments that give people the information, support and tools they need to quit, and quit for good.”

“To help tobacco users to commit to be quitters and winners, we are using digital aids to release the WHO Quit Challenge chatbot and Artificial Intelligence digital health worker Florence, and making advocacy material available in 30 languages,” added Dr Rüdiger Krech, Director Health Promotion, WHO.

The Quit Challenge gives daily notifications of tips and encouragement for up to 6 months to help people remain tobacco free. It is available for free on WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook Messenger and WeChat.

Globally, roughly 39% of men and 9% of women use tobacco. The highest smoking rates are currently found in Europe at 26%, with projections only showing a 2% decrease by 2025 if urgent government action is not taken.

Director-General’s Tobacco Control Awards

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has given special recognition awards for tobacco control to the Minister of Health and Family Welfare of India, Dr Harsh Vardhan and to the Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath, UK.

Dr Harsha Vardhan was instrumental in the 2019 national legislation that bans E-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs) in India. The Tobacco Control Research Group in UK has worked relentlessly to expose tobacco industry attempts and tactics to weaken, block or delay tobacco control, thereby helping secure policy change nationally and globally.

40 Pupils Impregnated By Gold Panners

Mother In Law’s Bu_ttocks “Sliced” Over Water Bills

By A Correspondent- A heated argument over water bills payment between mother-in-law and daughter ended drastically yesterday.

Jacqueline Moyo the mother in law to Yvonne Ncube reived the news that her inlaw was no paying water bills which sparked an argument upon questioning her.

” When l confronted her she ran into the kitchen and picked a kitchen knife and jabbed my buttocks and my left arm,” said Moyo.

Speaking to a local publication, the daughter in law said her mother in law approached her basing on rumours which are lies because she has receipts showing that they were paying the bills”.

Bulawayo police spokesperson inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.

He said, “We urge family members to solve their differences amicably and some assaults may appear minor but at times may result in the unnecessary loss of life”.

“He Was A Mere Tout”: Relatives Of Beitbridge Man Shot By Police Fume

By A Correspondent- Relatives of a Beitbridge man, who was shot and killed by a member of the security forces on an operation in the border town, say he was not a robber as police claimed, but just a mere tout at a bus terminus.

Police claimed Abel Gumbo, who was killed in Lutumba, was on the wanted list for a spate of armed robberies and fled when they took him by surprise.

The relatives want the officer, who shot Gumbo, charged with murder and their family compensated.

They said he only took to his heels thinking they were on a mission to enforce Covid-19 regulations and he was not putting on a face mask as per regulations.

The relatives feel authorities did not explore several other methods to arrest Gumbo without the fatal use of maximum force, considering he was entering a building.

Gumbo was shot dead at dawn on May 27 soon after he had helped a woman offload her cabbages off a South Africa bound truck.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said relatives should take their case to head of Beitbridge police Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo.

“I am not aware of that version,” Nyathi said.

“Can the family approach the Dispol at Beitbridge and make an official complaint.

“If unsatisfied at Beitbridge the family must proceed to the province.”

Wellington Moyo (21), a family spokesman, said it would take long to recover from the shockthat followed Gumbo’s death.

“It was a cold morning when police arrived in a car in pursuit of some people while the deceased sat by the fire with two other guys,” Moyo said.

“Frightened from previous police encounters the deceased bolted on what became his last race.”

He was gunned down as he entered a room at Lutumba Beer Hall where his guardian lived.

“There was a woman at the place and a plain clothes man, who hit him asked whether Gumbo was Elvis, a suspected armed robber they were hunting down.

“Sadly this was Abel,” Moyo added.

He said soon after realising their mistake, the officers started arguing amongst themselves.

“One was heard asking the way forward since he had already made a mistake,” Moyo claimed.

“Dog handlers on the other side were heard complaining that their dogs had been disturbed by too much gunfire.”

The team then cordoned off the area and even barred the relatives of the deceased from viewing their loved one.

The relatives also disputed police claims that he was carrying a knife on the fateful day.

“We are sure they planted the weapon after realising their error.

“Why was everything done away from the relatives view?

“Even if he had a knife, could he have stabbed all those police and military officers,” asked Moyo.

Police reportedly sought Gumbo’s previous convictions at court where they discovered petty common assault

Bus Operators Partner Car Assemblers To Start Assembling Local Buses

A consortium of local bus operators has partnered with car assemblers — AVM Africa and Quest Motors to start the assembling of local buses in a bid to solve the country’s transport woes.

This is part of the government’s efforts to promote the consumption of local products and create employment.

Speaking during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between Amalgamated Bus Operators of Zimbabwe, bus assembler AVM Africa and Quest Motors, a vehicle manufacturing company based in the eastern city of Mutare, Transport deputy minister Mike Madiro said the move was aimed at supporting local industries by government and would boost the economy.

“We, as government, should support local industries in our vehicle sourcing and also in bus manufacturing. We will see more of this happening over time,” Madiro said.

In addition to creating employment, the assembling of buses locally is also expected to have ripple effects on the economy since a substantial amount of materials would be sourced locally.

It is envisaged that 500 buses will be assembled annually and the group says it will create opportunities for the regional market.

Since the Covid-19 induced lockdown, the government outlawed the use of privately-owned commuter omnibuses on urban routes in a bid to restore sanity in the public transport system and to provide affordable transport to the commuting public.

The state-owned Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) has monopoly to provide urban public transport.

However, the Zupco fleet cannot meet the high demand, and has been operating with buses sourced from the private sector players under its franchise.

Under the deal, the amalgamated bus operators will import bus kits from Belarus and China and AVM Africa along with Quest Motors assembling the vehicles.

Quest has over the years assembled Volvo, Leyland and Nissan buses, and currently holds the franchise to build Chinese-owned Yutong and Zhong Tong buses.

Bogus Soldiers Dupe Land Seekers Cattle And Money

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF Mazowe District Coordinating Committee (DCC) came to the rescue of twenty-six land seekers in Mazowe who were duped cattle and money by two bogus soldiers last week.

Dzingai Chipara (47) and Nyembesi Tirivayi(59) were arraigned before Guruve magistrate  Rumbidzai Mugwagwa this Friday where they were remanded in custody to June 14

The state led by Albert Charehwa alleged that from November 2018, the duo swindled money and 26 beasts from desparate land seekers by parcelling out land illegally.

They misrepresented themselves to the land seekers that they were soldiers and would facilitate land through the ministry of agriculture.

The desparate land seekers approached DCC leadership after they were informed by lands officials that they had acquired the land illegally

Thank God, We’re Equal To The Task!” Boasted Chamisa – Yet Delivered Not Even One Reform In 21yrs

By Nomusa Garikai- The Greeks of the Golden Age of Greece gave humanity the Olympic Games, built the Acropolis, laid the foundation of human civilisation and, most important of all, gave mankind democracy – government of the people by the people and for the people.

There are many reasons why democracy has all but failed to take root in Zimbabwe and one of the reasons is are a pig-head society and there is nothing like being elevated into a position of power and authority to bring out the pig in pig-headed!.

“According to President Chamisa, leadership is a huge responsibility that requires humility and focus,” reported Zimeye and went on to quote Chamisa.

“THE POWER OF BUILDING NEW THINGS..SOMETHING FRESH!!

Every time I meet Zimbabweans I’m amazed at the love I see written all over their faces, the palpable joy and hope in their eyes.

Leadership is a huge responsibility.

Trust is a great burden. The hope, enthusiasm and expectation is a call to duty. Thank God, we’re equal to the task!”

Shocking!

The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect Chamisa and his fellow MDC friends into power on the understanding the MDC, as the party name implied, would deliver the democratic changes the nation has been dying for, literally. After 21 years on the political stage, 5 of which in the GNU, MDC has failed to deliver not even one democratic change. Not one!

It is therefore shocking that Chamisa should have arrogance and chic to  boast of his competence and accomplishments. “Thank God, we’re equal to the task!”

He even claims to have the gifts of “humility and focus!”

To be fair to Chamisa and his MDC friends they are not the only ones who are pig-headed. After 41 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption that has left the country in economic ruins, Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies still believe they are the only ones are competent to rule Zimbabwe and hence the reason they have rigged elections, just to be absolutely certain a free, fair and credible election did not deliver regime change.

Chamisa and his MDC friends and Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF thugs have one thing in common; they are pig-headed demagogues who believe they are God Almighty’s gift to the nation. Compared to everyone else, they are infallible, “equal to the task”; no task is too hard for them. They are the “Misstra know it all!” Stevie Wonder sang of.

Pig-headed demagogues can never ever be democrats because the lack the humility to acknowledge they are fallible mortals and there is absolutely nothing special about them.

The very idea of giving the ordinary citizen a meaningful say in the governance of the country, in a free, fair and credible elections is simply unthinkable to the demagogue. Democracy, government of the people by the people for the people, is a curse as far as the demagogues are concerned because the people will elect someone not “equal to the task”!

Make no mistake about it, no one has ever said democracy is perfect. Free, fair and credible elections have resulted in the election of people not equal to the task. The election of former US President Donald Trump is one. The real beauty of a healthy and functioning democracy is that the American voters were able to put things right four years later.

Where there is no healthy and functioning democracy, such as Zimbabwe, you get a demagogue into power and you are well and truly stuck!

We in Zimbabwe are well and truly stuck with not only the Zanu PF buffoons but now the MDC village idiots to boot! Both Zanu PF and MDC have failed to deliver democracy and free, fair and credible elections because they are demagogues and not democrats.

Five Perish In Chivhu- Gutu Horror Crash

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the death of five people in an accident that occurred along Chivhu-Gutu road.

Police Officers Get Lavish Treat For Conducting Demolitions

By A Correspondent- Chitungwiza Town Council lavished police officers conducting a demolition exercise in the town with takeaway food at a time service delivery has plunged to unprecedented levels.

More than 100 officers, including police officers drawn from Chitungwiza’s three stations – St Mary’s, Chitungwiza (Makoni) and Zengeza, police support unit and Municipality police were reportedly treated to chicken and chips and food bought from another top-class eatery in town.

The local authority also bought fuel for vehicles that were used in the exercise including council, Zimbabwe Republic Police as well as Local Government ministry trucks that had been taken from the central government.

Councillors in Chitungwiza have since distanced themselves from the exercise, reminiscent of the 2005 Operation Murambatsvina.

The demolitions of illegal structures within Harare Metropolitan Province commenced on Monday following a directive from Tafadzwa Muguti, the provincial development coordinator.

Chitungwiza residents through Chitungwiza Residents Trust (Chitrest) on Thursday got an interim court relief interdicting the continuation of the demolitions. Chitrest director Alice Kuvheya said:

We heard that council used its money to do the demolitions. We heard that they bought the food for the officers and fueled the vehicles.

It’s surprising that council is able to fund such an exercise when they can’t provide residents with essential services.

We don’t have water, garbage is all over the town, no medication. Council workers are not being paid yet they decide to go demolish informal traders’ sources of income.

The traders pay the taxes and rent to the council and the council comes back to them using their money to demolish their structures. It’s so inhumane.

Kuvheya said they would make sure every cent is accounted for with regards to the demolitions.

The Standard could not get a comment from Chitungwiza mayor Lovemore Maiko on Saturday as did not pick his phone while acting town Evangelista Machona was not reachable.

Mwonzora, Mnangagwa In Secret Meeting

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora on Friday held their first formal meeting since the Manicaland senator became the government’s preferred leader of the opposition amid murmurs of disapproval from his party.

Mwonzora In “Secret” Meeting With ED

By A Correspondent- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has admitted meeting with Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Soccer Lovers Mourn Yogi

By A Correspondent- Soccer lovers from within and outside the country continue to mourn Dynamos legend and 1980 Soccer Star of the Year David “Yogi” Mandigora, who died in Harare yesterday.
He was 64.

Mandigora, who was the first player to be voted Soccer Star of the Year in independent Zimbabwe, had been battling diabetes for a long time.

His right leg was amputated in October 2017. His condition deteriorated in the last few days, leading to his death in the early hours of yesterday.

Sunday Chidzambwa, one of Mandigora’s closest friends, led the tributes, describing his death as a huge loss to both Dynamos and Zimbabwe.

David George, Mandigora’s trusted lieutenant when DeMbare swept into the 2008 Champions League semi-finals, was at a loss for words.

The former Dynamos winger was Mandigora’s assistant when the Glamour Boys secured a semi-final berth from a tough Champions League group that had three past winners of the competition — Al Ahly, Zamalek (Egypt) and Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas. The team were only stopped by Coton Sport Garoua of Cameroon.

ZIFA also sent in their condolences to the family.

“ZIFA would like to express its sincere condolences to the Mandigora family and the football family at large following the sad and untimely departure of Warriors and Dynamos legend David ‘Yogi’ Mandigora.
“Mandigora served Zimbabwean football with great tenacity and distinction, and that he was crowned Soccer Star of the Year at Independence in 1980 speaks volumes of the great contribution of this wonderful soul to the beautiful game.
“It is very painful that the football fraternity continues to lose such humble characters who have contributed immensely to the development and growth of this game,’’ said ZIFA communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela.

Former referees Felix Tangawarima, Brighton Mudzamiri, Joseph Mususa and Gladmore Muzambi also expressed shock and sadness at the news of Mandigora’s demise.

Ex-Warriors and Chapungu midfielder Kennedy Chihuri, who is now based in England, said the ex-midfielder’s death came at a time when former players had begun pooling resources to assist him with his medical bills.
Former Zimbabwe and CAPS United coach Charles Mhlauri described him as a very knowledgeable and yet unassuming coach from whom he had learnt a lot. Mhlauri appointed the late Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo and Mandigora as his assistants when the Warriors went to the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

“The passing on of David ‘Yogi’ Mandigora saddens me. The game has lost yet another great gentleman of the game.

“We all know he fought a good fight which we all thought he was winning — having lost a leg, he had soldiered on but lost the battle on some glad day.

“Despite us having spent time in opposite dugouts, he was such an easy-going character at Dynamos while I was at CAPS.
“We would always meet almost every lunch hour in Milton Park for lunch at Joe ‘Pajero’ Musenda’s restaurant. It was his humble character that drew me closer to him.
“Yogi was a guy whose career defines not only the history of Dynamos, but football in Zimbabwe.
“He was a man who paid attention to detail, but never used the level of his voice to enhance his point. Cool as a cucumber all the time,’’ Mhlauri said.
Mandigora, he added, was a selfless character who always wanted the best for Zimbabwean football.
“When I chose an assistant coach, he was among the people I consulted, including Sunday Chidzambwa.
“He showed great maturity…he could have raised his hand for the position, but did not. Instead, he suggested other names, most of them not comparable to his experience.
“This defines his selfless character where he put the needs of others before his.
“His willingness to help was excellent. I had always admired him at Dynamos, and even when we crossed paths when he was at Lancashire Steel and I was at AmaZulu, he came across as a straightforward guy.
“Indeed, he was man of his word. As we sat at that table at Raylton Sports Club discussing possible assistant coaches I could bring to the national team, not on a single moment did he even raise his hand, but kept trying hard to assist with names.
“Sunday did most of the talking, and the two, you could see they had come a long way and had a natural understanding.
“As time would have it, I eventually settled for David Mandigora and Willard Khumalo to be my assistants, and we became family.
“Our union was blessed with a mutual understanding and defined by common objectives.
“There were times when the discussion became tough, as happens in soccer, not to mention the arrival Dick De Boer, a Dutch coach whom I had fished out of Holland.”
Mhlauri added that when things got heated, Yogi would take a moment to smoke a cigarette.
“He loved his cigarettes.
“Every time after a meeting, he would be the first to leave the conference room. It took me a while to understand that it was out of respect to the group. Instead, he wanted a little private moment to enjoy his cigar.
“He was always on hand on the bench, oozing with so much confidence and experience from his playing and coaching days that had started when I was still an apprentice at Zimbabwe Saints Juniors under my coach, the late Jani Gwede.
“He was a true gentleman. He never stuck out his head to get credit. He just did the work.
“There are two types of managers: Those who do the work and those who get the credit. Yogi did the job.
“My thoughts and prayers to his family and I will forever miss Yogi.”

“Properly Implemented Reforms Will Finish Off Zanu PF”

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “Brand New Isuzu vehicles were recently given to the Chiefs and Mbuya Nehanda gobbled a whopping R2.8 million in cash at a time when our health infrastructure is in rotten state.

“They never think about anything other than power retention.

“Cars to chiefs because chiefs will be used to frog-march voters to vote for them.

“The people and the country are Zanu pf’s last worries,” President Chamisa wrote on his official Facebook page.

It is true that the twin-cab Isuzu trucks for each of the country’s 270 chiefs @ US$ 30 000 for a total of US$ 8.1 million at a time Zimbabwe is failing to buy enough corona virus vaccine are a bribe to the chiefs. Chamisa is spot on, the chiefs are being paid for their part in “frog-marching voters to vote for Zanu PF”!

It is no secret that voters in the rural areas, constituting about 50% of the voters, in particular have been reduced to nothing short of medieval serfs beholden to the overbearing chiefs, village heads, war veterans, green bombers and all the other Zanu PF operatives.

In 2008 SADC leaders forced Mugabe and his Zanu PF cronies to agree to the implementation of a raft of democratic reforms whose primary purpose was end Zanu PF’s carte blanche dictatorial control of state institutions including traditional leaders to free them to carryout their democratic duties of safe guarding the freedoms and rights of all the citizens without favour or fear.

The reforms, properly implemented, would have ended Zanu PF’s practice of bribing the Chiefs and freed the rural voters to vote freely, for example.

The task to implement the democratic reforms were left to Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends in the 2008 to 2013 GNU. Nelson Chamisa, Tendai Biti and most of the other leaders in the MDC A and MDC-T were senior MDC leaders in the GNU.

Sadly, MDC leaders failed to implement even one token reform in the five years of the GNU. Not even one reform!

SADC leaders made a last minute determined attempt to have Zimbabwe’s July 2013 elections postponed until the reforms were implemented. “If you go into elections next month, you are going to lose. The elections are done!” Tsvangiai and company were warned.

Tsvangirai et al did not listen for the same reason they had failed to implement even one reform during the GNU – greed. MDC leaders knew Zanu PF was rigging the elections but they also knew Zanu PF was giving away a few gravy train seats to entice the opposition to participate.

Ever since the 2008 GNU debacle MDC leaders have participated in Zimbabwe’s flawed and illegal elections for the sake of the bait gravy train seat and knowing that doing so gave the vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy!

There is very little the ordinary Zimbabweans can do to stop the 2023 elections going ahead, both Zanu PF and MDC are set to play their assigned roles, one blatantly rigging the elections and the other participating regardless how flawed the process gets.

However the one thing ordinary Zimbabweans can and must do is to denounce these elections as a farce and make sure they play no part in the whole fraudulent affair.

SADC leaders were right to condemn the 2013 elections as a farce in advance because the elections were rigged in advance. Zanu PF has already rigged the 2023 elections in advance. How can an election in which 50% of the voters are frog matched to vote for a predetermined candidate and party be anything but a rigged election!

“The people and the country are Zanu pf’s last worries!” And you have aided and abetted Zanu PF by giving the regime that “frog – matches voters” legitimacy!

The people must not only refuse to participate in these 2023 elections without first implementing the reforms but demand that elections must be declared here and now, in advance because they have already been rigged in advance, null and void.

Zimbabwe has spent the last 41 years blundering from pillar to post. Well here is the one thing we can do right – implement the reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections. Surely that is not too much to ask!

Elephants Kill 30

By A Correspondent- At least 30 people have been killed by elephants in Zimbabwe this year alone, with the number expected to rise as the country approaches the dry season when animals move more in search of food and water.

The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) confirmed the deaths, saying the growing number of cases of human-wildlife conflict mostly involve elephants.

“We are experiencing a rise in deaths spawned by elephants. This year, so far we have recorded 30 cases of people who have been killed by elements. These animals are overcrowded, so as a result, they escape from the game parks and invade people’s territories in search of food or water where people get killed,” Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said.

“We are in June, the situation is expected to worsen in the dry months because, in the parks, there will be less food, less water, which means people need to be very careful as the elephants will be moving around and ravaging territories.”

He added that Zimparks was trying to come up with solutions to reduce cases of human-animal conflict in the country.

“We are still planning how best we can control the population of elephants and we have come up with several options such as translocating the animals into other areas, but the challenge is that it is too expensive, as we all know that elephants are also capable of destroying anything,” Farawo said.

“We are moving around the communities to do awareness campaigns that educate people on animal habits and how to protect themselves.”

At 100 000, Zimbabwe has the world’s second-largest population of elephants after neighbouring Botswana and is considering culling as a way of controlling the population.

“Thank God, We’re Equal To The Task!” Boasted Chamisa – Yet Delivered Not Even One Reform In 21yrs

By Nomusa Garikai | The Greeks of the Golden Age of Greece gave humanity the Olympic Games, built the Acropolis, laid the foundation of human civilisation and, most important of all, gave mankind democracy – government of the people by the people and for the people.

There are many reasons why democracy has all but failed to take root in Zimbabwe and one of them is a pig-headed society: there is nothing like being elevated into a position of power and authority to bring out a pig.

Overzealous Cop Guns-Down Mutare Man Over Covid Regulations

By A Correspondent- A Mutare man was reportedly shot at Legends Bar in Chikanga by a police officer trying to enforce lockdown regulations.

It is alleged that the man was shot and injured on the hip when the bullet penetrated a vehicle he was seated in and severely damaged his hip bone.

The accused, police constable Matthew Tichivanhu who is attached to the Support Unit Changadzi Sierra Troop is facing attempted murder charges.

Initially, Godfrey Mafukashe (37) of Chikanga 2 had been hauled before a provincial magistrate on charges of defeating the course of justice after the police had alleged that he had been shot while attacking cops who were enforcing Covid-19 lockdown regulations. However, the case has taken a new twist.

Mafukashe, who is out on bail, has since filed an attempted murder charge against Constable Tichivanhu for shooting him as he was seated in his friend’s car.

Mafukashe is arguing that he had nothing to do with the fracas that happened at the bar as he was seated in the vehicle when police raided the pub and arrested 27 patrons.

Through his lawyers, Mafukashe told the Officer Commanding Mutare District Police, Chief Superintendent Mutadza, that his arrest was wrong as he was the victim.

An attempted murder charge was subsequently opened at Chikanga Police Station under CR115/05/21 and the docket has since been referred to CID Mutare for further investigations.

In his complaint letter to Chief Superintendent Mutadza, Mafukashe said he was a victim of a police shooting.

The incident happened on May 29 at around 9:30pm The Manica Post reports.

Mnangagwa Says: MDC Alliance Is A Terrorist Organisation | IS HE TELLING THE TRUTH?

By Farai D Hove | The ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa who has personally executed the worst state terrorism against a local population in Southern Africa, since the 1800s, has described the MDC Alliance as a terrorist organisation.

Mnangagwa was speaking at the launch of empowerment programmes for war veterans in Harare, when he claimed the MDC Alliance was anti-democratic and anti-developmental. He said:

“Let us all remain astute and vigilant, aware of the asymmetrical tactics of the opposition, in particular, the MDC Alliance whose character resembles that of a terrorist organisation.

“The MDC Alliance has nothing democratic about it. It is anti-constitution, anti-development and anti-people, but pro-violence and destruction.

“Let us remain vigilant and be wary of the MDC-A, which is anti-people and anti-democratic.”

His statements come barely a year after announcing that he will use the army against Harare residents when he suspects they are guilty of stopping the rain, and in the last 3 years he has unleashed rogue soldiers onto Harare’s streets leading to the murder of over 25 people, the raping and torture of over 50 women. On the 1st August, he used rogue soldiers to change the election results.

Dembare Dedicates Win To Late Mandigora As Football Fratenity Mourns Soccer Legend

The football fraternity was thrown into mourning following the death of Zimbabwe football legend and 1980 Soccer Star of the Year David “Yogi” Mandigora at his Harare home yesterday morning.

Mandigora was reportedly scheduled to have his remaining leg amputated after losing his other limb to peripheral vascular disease in October 2017.

Apart from being the first soccer star in independent Zimbabwe, Yogi won numerous league titles as a player with Harare giants Dynamos and would also win the 2007 league title for the club as coach.

The Highfield-bred football icon had his last stint with Dynamos in 2015.

Mandigora ranks among some of the best coaches to emerge from Zimbabwe, who in 2008 led Dynamos to the CAF Champions League semifinal.

Zifa took the lead in paying tribute to a legend, who was part of the first Warriors squad at independence in 1980.

“Zifa would like to send its condolences to the Mandigora family and the football fraternity at large following the sad passing on of Warriors legend David Mandigora. Mandigora is undoubtedly one of the best football servants to be produced in this country,” communication and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela said.

“Being the first soccer star in independent Zimbabwe in 1980 speaks volumes of the immense talent Mandigora possessed. Taking Dynamos to the semi-finals of the Caf champions’ league is further evidence that Mandigora was a quality coach. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) also took to Twitter to pay tribute to the former star midfielder.

“We are saddened by the untimely passing of football legend David ‘Yogi’ Mandigora. Our sincere condolences go to the Mandigora family and the entire football family during this difficult period. May his soul rest in peace,” they said.

Dynamos were yet to release a statement on the passing on of the club legend by the time of going to print, but coach Tonderai Ndiraya dedicated the team’s win against Harare City to his former mentor.

“We received sad news today just before kick-off that we lost one of our legends in David Mandigora. We want to dedicate this win to David Mandigora and of course to our supporters, who perished on their way to support the team in Gweru in 2016,” he said after the match yesterday.

Dynamos was yesterday commemorating the fifth annivesary of that accident.

Ndiraya along with his goalkeepers’ coach Gift Muzadzi were part of Yogi’s backroom staff during his last stint at the club in 2015.

Mandigora began his coaching career in 1987 when he joined Darryn Textiles soon after hanging up his boots.

However, his first notable feat as a coach was when he won the Division One league with a Lancashire Steel side in 1994 introducing exciting talents such as Kingstone Rinemhota and Petros Sibanda to name a but a few to topflight football

The cause of Mandigora’s death is not known yet. Mourners are gathered at number 9 Goshaw Road, Vainona.

  1. Fellow Zimbabweans, the country has done very well in terms of curbing the spread of Covid 19. In addition our vaccination against Covid 19 is going on very well. Mwonzora-Mnangagwa Secret Meeting Worries Party, POLAD Members

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora on Friday held their first formal meeting since the Manicaland senator became the government’s preferred leader of the opposition  amid murmurs of disapproval from his party.

Mwonzora yesterday told The Standard that he had gone to State House to pay a courtesy call on Mnangagwa.

Gold Dealer Killed In Front Of Family

A gold dealer in Lower Gweru, Midlands province, died when suspected robbers sprayed eight bullets all over his body while his wife and children watched helplessly, in the latest of suspected armed robbery cases that have gripped the nation.

In a scene only imagined in movies, the men allegedly approached Mr Bernard Dube, under the pretext that they wanted to process their gold ore.

Mr Dube owned gold milling machines.

The moment Mr Dube came out of the house, one of the robbers allegedly opened fire and pumped eight bullets into the businessman while his wife and children watched helplessly at their home in St Faith.

The incident happened on Tuesday last week at about 8pm. What has surprised the family and neighbours is that the assailants did not take anything after shooting the businessman as they just disappeared into the night. Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko referred all questions to national police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who could not be reached.

However, the uncle to the deceased, Mr Rain Mathulisa said one of the assailants has since been arrested.

“On the fateful day, the killers approached my nephew’s homestead under the pretext that they wanted to process their gold ore as he owned milling machines.

“They were then let into the yard and they opened fire the moment they saw him, and he was shot eight times. I was called by a neighbour and we rushed him to hospital but he was declared dead upon arrival. After a few hours, police came with a certain man who had been seen driving a suspicious car earlier on.

“The deceased’s wife confirmed that he was one of the men who shot my nephew. The suspect told the police that he was from Filabusi and he had been sent to kill my nephew. His car was searched and three firearms were recovered,” he claimed.

St Faith’s acting headman Mr Emmanuel Makhula said the incident shocked the community and villagers were now living in fear.

“We are very saddened by this development and as villagers we are now living in fear. If they could kill him, it means none of us is safe. We are appealing to anyone who might have any information relating to this case to approach the nearest police station so that justice is served,” he said.

The local councillor, Benjamin Mpala said he was concerned about the increase in cases of violence in the area.

Christian Eriksen In Stable Condition After Collapsing During Euro 2020 Match

Five Perish In Gutu Accident

Government Announces New Measures To Curb Spread Of COVID-19

10) With regards to the management of local hot spots, the following measures shall be implemented:
a) There will be daily national updates of hot spots as part of the daily COVID-19 situational report
b) The public is being advised not to travel to these hot spots areas
c) There will be increased testing and contact tracing within the hot spot areas.

d) Vaccinations and health education will be intensified in the hot spots areas.
e) If the above measures fail to control the hot spot areas, targeted lockdowns will be effected in those areas.

Finally, I want to remind everyone to properly wear their face mask, sanitise, maintain physical and social distancing, and get vaccinated

About Tobacco Smoking And Cancer
