-Government suspends quail birds farming-
Government has suspended with immediate effect quail birds farming which had taken the country by storm.
Climate and Water Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguru Kashiri told the media yesterday that government has ordered for an immediate halt of the farming of the birds describing it as a scientifically unproven venture and illegal.
Thousands of Zimbabweans took to the bush catching the birds after mass advertising in all media that the consumption of the birds and their eggs has been proven to be of very high health benefits.
The advertisers claimed that consumption of the birds and their eggs increased a human body’s immunity ideal for people with must chronic ailments including cancer, diabetes, High Blood pressure and even HIV/AIDS.
Following the mass advertising for the birds, a demand for them shot very high creating a very high price for the birds in the market.
In the capital, the birds have been selling for as much as $12 per bird with its scarce eggs going for as much as $9 for a crate of thirty. Ordinary chicken is selling for as low as $4.50 per bird in the capital while chicken eggs are $2.50 for a crate of thirty.
Minister Kashiri says that her Ministry was shocked by the sudden demand for the birds claiming the nutrition and healing claims about the birds to be false and fraudulent.
“No research has ever been done about these birds in Zimbabwe and all the claims of the birds being of very high nutrition are all lies and fraudulent,” said Kashiri.
“These claims must have been started by someone with criminal intentions to defraud people of their money,” she added.
The Minister said that her Ministry will meet with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture to discuss the claims around the birds and may a way forward.
Meanwhile, the Department of Parks and Wildlife has also issued a statement warning quail farmers that keeping the birds in an enclosed set up and collecting their eggs is an illegal exercise warranting imprisonment under the Parks and Wildlife Act.
The Department’s warning was further emphasised by Minister Kashiri saying that enclosing the birds violated their freedom and is an act of cruelty against the birds.
Zimbabweans had gone out in large numbers collecting and breeding the birds following the nutrition claims. Some were already hoarding the highly mating birds in huge quantities of up to thousands responding to the demand.
The more enterprising of the farmers were already busy hatching the eggs and selling day old chicks into the suddenly huge market for the birds. Some had already started carrying out quail bird farming workshops that were costing participates up to as high as $100 for a one day on site training.
Farmers expressed shock at the government’s move claiming that they had already invested hugely into the venture. The farmers expressed anger on why government allowed the mass farming activities to go on for almost a year without intervening.
“This is not fair if the government. This business has been going in for almost a year now and they have been aware of it, why stop it only now?” said a Mr Obert Musara who has been farming the birds in Harare.
Another farmer in Norton said that he had invested over $2000 into the project only two months back and had not yet stated getting the promising returns on his investment.
“I invested over two thousand dollars into this venture and had already established a market with several supermarkets around Harare and was almost ready to start delivering,” he said. “Now I don’t know what government wants me to do with all these birds.”
Comment could not immediately be obtained from the Zimbabwe Farmers Union which some farmers claim was also involved in the mass advertising of the quail birds farming and it’s returns.
One farmer in Harare however said that he was not giving up on the project claiming that the suspension was part of some government officials’ corruption who want people out of the venture to eliminate competition.
“It’s all lies and corruption by these officials. I am not giving up on mine until I see them removing the birds from their own farms,” he said.
