The following was a comment from a contributor in the ZimEye newsroom: “Condolences to relatives of those who died at the Vungu river accident. How many lives need be lost on narrow roads whilst this Zanu PF bandwagon of murderers and looters continue to wantonly pillage state resources? Single-carriage Motorways or Highways left by Smith decades ago need dualising yet Obert Dumbuguru Mdudla Mpofu and Mnangagwas are getting stinking rich by the day through diamond money. The missing 15bn would go a long way to dualise the Harare-Bulawayo-Beitbridge, the notorious Harare-Masvingo, Byo-Vic Falls and all other highways. When will these brazen criminals be punished for looting state resources with unbridled impunity?”

  1. There are many factors that contribute to an accident. The chances of the accidents in general would have been low if it was a dual carriage. A high proportion of accidents in our country are largely due to overtaking in single carriage roads and also roads not wide enough to accommodate things such as driver’s loss of control due tyre burst or simple errors. A slight mistake you out of the road and at 120km that spells disaster nowadays most of the cars on our roads can easily go over 140km/hr but our roadroads are not moving with time. If that road had at least 2 or 3 lanes each side you can reduce overtaking accidents.
Accidents will continue to happen but as motorists we must be aware that the horsepowers our cars are capable of unleashing may not be compatible with our 1970’s tarred strips. RIP

  3. If the road upgrade had been effected in 1990s you say this accident wouldn’t have happened?

  5. Wezhira !! Sorry is pathetic as his name suggest !! Forgive him . May be he does not even know the difference between high way – dual carriage and a narrow road like the one in question which has surely became a death trap because it can not cope with the volume of traffic. Every thing we have in Zim was indeed the brain child of the Rhodesian Government. Our own Government has built one or two schools — and of course Universities because they bring loads of money. Developing any other infrastructure that would not bring money became a taboo!! Just look at the major referral hospitals we have in the country !! Were they not left by Smith?

  7. Harare -Byo is very narrow for a highway connecting a capital city and second largest city. That road was built to cater for 1970’s volume of traffic. I guess in that era it was wide enough when there were fewer cars that could reach speeds of 60km/hr and heavy trucks were next to none. I appreciate the road was recently widened and clearly marked but those upgrades should have happened in the early 1990’s. The volume of traffic between Harare and Byo is probably 5 times more than that road can handlehandle. If one is going to Norton , chegutu, Kwekwe, Kadoma, Gweru, Byo, Vicfalls, Botswana, Namibia they all share that strip road . the problem is Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development has been stagnant for 3 decades and now they’re implementing upgrades that should have been done 20years ago. As it is Byo road is not fit for purpose. It qualifies to be a road linking masvingo and chiredzi not two big cities.
