There was drama in Harare on Friday when an Indian cricket player on tour with the country’s national team was arrested by ZRP cops for allegedly raping a local woman at Meikles Hotel.
“I can confirm that there are allegations of rape against an Indian national by a Zimbabwe woman,” Police Spokesperson Charity Charamba said on Saturday.
She continued, “We are bound as police by the law when such serious matters arise and we investigate. We have investigated and forwarded the case to the courts for determination and we wait the outcome. He appeared in court today,” she said.
CID and CIO officers stormed into the hotel late Friday as the Indian cricket team’s coaching staff and the country’s envoys battled to save face.
The man’s identity was kept a secret at the time of going to press.
“It is tricky issue because it could turn into a diplomatic feud between the two countries.
The Indian ambassador to Zimbabwe was spotted at the hotel attempting to stop the player’s arrest, sources told ZimEye.
“The woman claims to have awoken later with bloodied underwear which implies she did not know how she ended up in the player’s room,” another source said.
India was beaten by Zimbabwe in the one-day Saturday sessioner by two runs.
