Athlete Rutendo Nyahora has made it to the 2016 Rio Summer games, she told ZimEye weeks ago, “nothing can stop a determined woman.”
ZimEye had an interview with Nyahora after she had broken a commendable second in South Africa during the Spar Ladies League.
Meeting with the team earlier today, President Robert Mugabe said he was delighted to receive the team which stands on the verge of writing a new page in the country’s 36 year history when they participate at the 2016 Rio summer games beginning on the 5th to the 21st of next month.
“You have the potential to add to the eight medals so far achieved, 3 gold, 4 silver and one bronze at Olympic games. We also expect you to display a high standard of discipline and sportsmanship and market brand Zimbabwe,” Cde Mugabe told the team.
“What I can only give you now is my best wishes. You must expect tough opposition and when you lose, do it with dignity, respect and not lose heart. Your qualification alone is an achievement in itself, so you would remain the county’s heroes and heroines,” he added.
Team Zimbabwe is comprised of 31 athletes from seven different sporting disciplines that include aquatics, athletics, archery, equestrian, shooting, football, rowing and will be accompanied by 25 officials.
At the ceremony, President Mugabe was presented with Team Zimbabwe’s kit as a token of appreciation by Sport and Recreation Minister, Makhosini Hlongwane.
