As expelled Hurungwe West MP Temba Mliswa lost his court case, the Tsvangirai MDC formation yesterday applauded the ruling by High Court judge, Justice Chinembiri Bhunu that a registered voter can lawfully contest in a national assembly election in any constituency in the country.
Party spokesman Obert Gutu, however said though the judge correctly interpreted the law, there’s need to amend the piece of legislation to curb abuses as some political parties may take advantage of the loophole to impose candidates in constituencies where they do not belong.
Justice Bhunu made the decision during a pre-trial conference in a matter in which Temba Mliswa was challenging the victory of Keith Guzah of Zanu PF whom he alleges contested in Hurungwe West but was not registered there.
Mliswa also accused Guzah of having a criminal record, but Justice Bhunu ruled that a criminal record was not reason enough to bar one from contesting in an election.
“That law is actually a law that can be abused very seriously because you can have a situation where people can choose to run for office as MPs in constituencies in which they do not have vested interests,” said Gutu – VOA

  1. If there party’s electoral process is free, fair and credible then the members will be able to reject the imposed candidate. If the party rigged its own electoral process then the voters in the national election will still reject the imposed candidate. In short the solution here is to ensure the national election process is free, fair and credible.
So there is no need to change the law what MDC should have done is ensure elections are free and fair. Obert Gutu you are once again showing the nation what a complete fool you are; you failed to implement the reform to ensure free and fair elections but now you want to waste time fixing the law that requires no fixing! You really are a first class idiot Gutu!
