Dokora bans Scripture Union – citing of Lord’s prayer next to go

Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Lazarus Dokora, has banned Scripture Union activities at all schools while forcing for the adoption of the controversial national pledge.
Scripture Union is an interdenominational Christian movement which has operated in Zimbabwe for over 70 years and found in almost all schools in the country.
According to Scripture Union Zimbabwe national director Mr Kudakwashe Gwemende the announcement was made at a meeting between Dokora and the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations in Harare a week ago.
“We just heard that the ministry has ordered through a meeting for all activities conducted by Scripture Union in schools to be stopped,” said Gwemende.
“We waited for minutes of the meeting or a letter. We haven’t seen that official communication and we were told to wait, and there has not been anything since.”
An official with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in the capital said that the Scripture Union activities were being stopped as they contradicted with the spirit of the new curriculum which emphasises on national pride. The official said that the activities can only be restored if they align to the concept of “national pride.”
Gwemende said that his organisation was not sure exactly what the Ministry needed adjusted to it’s activities that was contrary to the new curriculum.
“As SU we don’t have a position yet because things have not been officialised so you don’t respond to what has not been officialised.
“We are in a difficult situation because we were promised and that promise did not come through. And the minister has suggested a Memorandum of Understanding, for us that will be fine depending on what is on the MOU.”
Gwemende said the Scripture Union helped with children’s character formation, assisting in developing integrity through hard work and family values.
“Those qualities that would be desirable in a society: respect of authority, training people how to lead and having a heart for other people.
“In our social responsibility department we look after orphans. We cloth and feed them, pay for fees as well as send them to hospital when they are sick.
“We also have life skills aimed at empowering young people inspite of their faith to make well informed decisions about issues of life, not just being influenced by peers and we teach them to handle their sexuality responsibly,” he said.
The Ministry has introduced a new curriculum which is led by a National Pledge through which children have to indirectly express their allegiance to government and ZANU PF.
Sources within the Ministry also indicate that, the Ministry is considering banning the citing of the biblical Lord’s prayer at the schools as it is against the provisions of the constitution in terms of religious preferences.
A new syllabus has also been designed which has an emphasis on the children learning about the history of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and the post independence ZANU PF government battles with the Western Countries which includes the so called sanctions and the land redistribution exercise.
As part of their extra curriculum activities, children will also be required to undertake military style drills and mass displays.

After Dr Guti sacrificed his hard earned cash and pledges from well wishers in his church to build a university. Millions of dollars were spent. Then a zombie like dokora appear from nowhere to ban OUR LORD’S PRAYER and teaching of scripture in schools that he has not contributed even a cent . That is a joke. We have a lot of Christian denominations who are contributing a lot towards our education system including buying text books, uniforms, building schools etc. After all that effort their kids are then deprived from praising our LORD who is doing all the good works. Let’s all unite and pray to our father JESUS CHRIST to cast away this demon called dokora.
