The Movement for Democratic Change will hold an emergency council meeting tomorrow, to resolve internal fissures triggered by President Morgan Tsvangirai’s recent appointment of Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri as the party’s vice-presidents.
Tsvangirai( see story here )seems to be digging in on the appointments while the rest of his leadership team dispute them and have refused to endorse the two Chamisa and Mudzuri.
Intense lobbying is taking place with violent threats being made against those who stand to oppose Tsvangirai, “An attempt to reverse an appointment made by our President, is actually an attack, not only to the office of the President, but to Morgan Tsvangirai himself. An attack to our President, is an attack to us as well and is an attack to our struggle,” wrote an MDC Youth leader Happymore Chidziva.
Should violence break out at Harvest House this would not be the first time that party leaders are physically attacked for opposing Tsvangirai’s position, there are examples of Elton Mangoma and Trudy Stevenson.
Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyorika confirmed the development, but declined to disclose the agenda of the meeting which comes hardly two weeks after another firefighting indaba failed to resolve the impasse.
Tsvangirai last month appointed Chamisa and Mudzuri as his deputies in addition to Thokozani Khupe amid speculation the move was meant to dilute the latter’s political ambitions and stabilise the party after the MDC-T leader went public over his health status.
The former Prime Minister recently disclosed that he had cancer of the colon and regularly visits South Africa for chemotherapy treatment.
The appointments have, however, reportedly divided the party with other top officials claiming they were done unprocedurally. But, Tsvangirai insists his decision was guided by the party’s constitution, adding Mudzuri and Chamisa’s appointments were meant to strengthen the MDC-T’s preparations for the 2018 elections.
Two party members, Partson Murimoga and George Rice, have since filed a High Court application seeking nullification of the appointments.
Last week, the party’s standing committee meeting was allegedly abandoned after 20 minutes as some members strongly rejected the presence of Chamisa and Mudzuri at the indaba.
“The appointments were done after the national council meeting and the new appointments were not formally presented for endorsement by the national council. This (tomorrow’s) meeting is meant to cure that,” the source said. Newday

And, like they did with Mugabe in the early 1980s, some are turning a blind eye and continue to support him nevertheless, just because he is Shona. Its African politics!!

It never seems to amaze me why Tsvangirayi is always making blunders, one after the other- and you aspire to be President, “my Foot”,watch out, yet another MDC split on the way. Then the party is finished.

Going by yesterday’s stories that Chamisa was at court and met Mujuru and war veterans. MDC will be the loser if Chamisa crossed the floor. MDC wants war veterans former Zanu-PF Zim Pf are hungry for totally former anti Zanoids to give it a face of national convergence. Chamisa has taken that Bridge. People know what they want and things are fast changing. There is one common enemy now. MDC has to be reminded on this.
