Staff Reporter | Regis Mungwari (29), the “Killer Driver”of South African registered haulage truck which belongs to Transmech is facing 20 counts of culpable homicide.
He was yesterday escorted by Mvuma Police, clad in prison garb from Whawha Remand Prison Cells infested with lice and fleas to the accident scene for comprehensive investigations where the shells of the two vehicles were still at the accident scene six days on.
Mvuma police wanted to take a caution and warned statement from Mungwari because by the time when he was detained under police guard at Mvuma District Hospital his level of consciousness was very low to about 10/15 and could not talk. The state remanded him in custody without taking a cautioned and warned statement from him to avoid 48 hours which could have resulted in over detention.
The scene was initially attended by the officer commanding national traffic, Snr Asst Comm Felistus Chikowore Mjanga and the officer commanding Midlands Province Snr Asst Comm Abigail Moyo who wanted to ensure smooth proceeding of investigations. The docket was later transferred to Mvuma National Traffic Section, which is the mother station.
He appeared before Mvuma magistrate’s Court on
Friday 07 April 2017 facing 20 Cases of Culpable homicide and was remanded in custody to April 20. He was denied bail by the Mvuma magistrate’s court and taken to Whawha Remand Prison.
Mungwari’s relatives Clara Mungwari (sister to Regis) a police officer based at Marondera Central Police Station, Sebia Mungwari(nèe) Tsikisayi (Aunty to Regis) based at Thornhill Airbase and his wife Ivy Taruberekera were in the gallery on Friday, when Mvuma magistrate’s court denied him a bail.
Mungwari wife broke down in tears, as she suckled Regis ‘s 3 weeks old baby.
According to state, preliminary investigations indicate that on approaching the 218 km peg, Mungwari encroached on the path of the oncoming bus. The bus and the haulage truck sideswiped and both vehicles caught fire.Regis Mungwari is languishing in Whawha Remand Prison. Whawha prison is the infamous penitentiary which housed President Robert Mugabe during the Ian Smith regime era. Mugabe spent 10 years at Whahwha prison from 1964 to 1974.
Meanwhile, the accident victims’ relatives say they want the government charged for negligently failing to provide adequate emergency infrastructure along the country’s highways.
Potholes and narrow roads such as the Harare-Masvingo Highway have taken more lives than drivers travelling without a fire extinguisher for example.
The government last week declared the accident a national disaster and provided State-assisted funerals for the victims.

Yes thats my point, they are treating him like he did it intentionally why? I am not supporting what happened but hey. That man arikuto pika jeri rake ega already, they should just feel sorry for the whole situation.
Culpable homicide means unintentionally causing death. If they can prove he was negligent and that lead to death of those people he will be jailed. It is not the same as murder.
So why are they treating him like a murderer. He is actually very remorseful of what happened.
And also the bus was speeding ,probably above the prescribed speed limit
Why blame the driver the roads are so bumpy and full of pot-holes
Of course he didn’t do it intentionally , who would?
This is not good. Did he do it intentionally.
