By Staff Reporter| As Zimbabwe readies for the upcoming 2018 polls, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been challenged on his promise to have free and fair elections.
“If we are going to have free and fair elections, why do we still have AIPPA and POSA,” asked analyst Wellence Mujuru.
Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has said there will never be free protest in Zimbabwe under the new government. He was arrested days after making that statement.
Mzembi’s views have been supported by the fact to date, since his rise to power, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has done nothing to repeal the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) Act which was enforced in 2002 by the predominantly ZANU–PF parliament and amendments made in 2003 which restrict media reportage.
The other controversial act, the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) was introduced by a ZANU-PF dominated parliament spearheaded by President Mnangagwa himself and former VP John Nkomo as they assisted Robert Mugabe to consolidate his power giving untold powers to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
