By A Correspondent | Emmerson Mnangagwa’s deputy Constantino Chiwenga who is currently occupying the role of Acting President has rubbished concerns by the United States of America and the United Kingdom over the military brutality and the depriving of citizens’ internet access seen in the last few days since Tuesday.
When the UK and US embassies issued statements of concern 2 days ago, there was still some internet access with only Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter being blocked. The British minister in the Foreign Office Harriett Baldwin then summoned the Zimbabwean ambassador Christian Katsande to a meeting in London.
ZimEye has it on good authority that ambassador Katsande rushed to attend the meeting as per the summoning yesterday.
” He did not take time but rushed to our offices, ” a source in the FCO revealed to ZimEye.com on Friday.
During the meeting the British minister complained about the unrestrained military force used on citizens. She also urged that the government must restore internet access for citizens which at that time had been restored but it was WhatsApp Facebook and Twitter which were blocked.
The US Embassy on another hand issued their own statement complaining about the same concerns.
However, within hours of that meeting at about 10 p.m. the Zimbabwean government had moved to defy all the concerns and issued another instruction to mobile operators to effect a total blackout of internet services. This was revealed in an SMS sent out to all subscribers by the operators.
A message sent out by the money transfer giant, WorldRemit whuch uses the Econet services said: “Due to a shut down of the internet in Zimbabwe transactions will not be available for collection today. We will keep you updated as the situation progresses.”
Meanwhile Chiwenga on Tuesday speaking in a separate conversation with ZimEye’s Simba Chikanza, people who have been shot dead must go and report to the police.(click here to watch)
