PUBLIC examinations in Zimbabwe have been thrown into disarray as teachers, who also act as invigilators, have resolved to report for duty two days a week.

Progressive Teacher’s union president Dr Takavafira Zhou told ZTN that teachers can no longer afford bus fare and will only report for duty on Mondays and Fridays.

“Teachers are incapacitated and can only report for work twice a week. We don’t invigilate when we are not teaching,” he said.

Dr Zhou said efforts to engage the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council have been futile.

“Zimsec are arrogant,” he said.

“We have engaged them to pay invigilators and they refused. The trend in the region is that invigilators are paid and we don’t know why our invigilators are not being paid”.

Zimsec spokesperson Nicky Dhlamini declined to comment.

Meanwhile, the affected schools have resorted to hiring invigilators to oversee examinations which began this month.
