By A Correspondent- Former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko’s trial over abuse of office charges will take place on 13 February after he successfully objected to having the matter heard on Saturday, 1 February 2020.

Mphoko, through his attorney, Zibusiso Ncube, objected to having to face trial on a Sabbath Day (Saturday), their religious conviction as Seventh Day Adventists do not allow them to “work” on a Saturday.

Said Ncube:

We cannot compromise on the issue of the Sabbath.

Our conditions are that we do not work on Sabbath and on this one we believe in a higher authority, God.

According to the State, on May 6, 2016, Mphoko, while still the Vice President, stormed Avondale Police Station and ordered the release of two Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) officials David Norupiri and Moses Juma.

The duo had earlier that say been arrested at the instigation of the Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission (ZACC) on fraud allegations.
