PRESS STATEMENT
Fellow Zimbabweans
We wish to commend you on the courage and resilience that you have collectively demonstrated since the arrest of the two leaders about 24 hours ago. We want to assure you that together, in unity and peace we can do this.
We have learnt that Journalist Hopewell Chin`ono and Transform Zimbabwe President Jacob Ngarivhume will be taken to court tomorrow, Wednesday the 22nd of July 2020. As per our statement immediately after their arrest, we believe that their arrest was unfair, unlawful and uncalled for. They therefore should not have been arrested in the first place, not least in the barbaric manner that they were arrested.
It is therefore our strongly held belief and conviction that the courts must release the two as soon as they arrive at court tomorrow. In this regard, we urge all Zimbabwean citizens to pour out in their millions to peacefully express their solidarity with Hopewell and Jacob and to register their disgust against the abuse of the law and state institutions by ZANU PF to silence human rights activists and anti-corruption whistle blowers.
Thus, tomorrow, People in Harare are urged to converge at the Rottenrow Magistrate`s courts at 0900AM and come prepared to sleep there if need be. Those who are outside of Harare must peacefully assembly at the biggest court near them.
While all this must be done peacefully and non-violently, citizens are encouraged to stand strong and resist any attempts to disperse them before the two are unconditionally released.
We expect our national law enforcement agencies to act in accordance with the country`s laws and constitution and abide by well-established professional best practices of the institutions that they represent.
Let us continue to vigilantly guard against trappings of violence, which is the state`s domain Let’s forge ahead in peace and unity until victory, which is certain.
