More than 5,000 people were murdered in South Africa between July and September.

Police Minister, Bheki Cele announced crime statistics for the third quarter on Friday.

Over 900 people were killed in their homes, while nearly 2,000 died in public spaces.

“Between July and September, 5,107 people were murdered in South Africa. This meant that 339 less people were killed compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Cele has again criticised South Africans’ use of alcohol.

He says alcohol abuse was a contributing factor to 829 assault cases and 747 of the rape cases reported between the first of July and the end of September.
