Liberation war veterans who fought under the ZAPU aligned Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) have resolved to pull out of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association and form their own association as they can no longer stand being used in Robert Mugabe’s ZANU PF factional fights.
The veterans made the decision at a meeting held in Bulawayo over the weekend. The resolution says that the ZIPRA cadres must immediately pull out of the ZANU PF aligned war veterans association and start a new association which will back former Vice President Joyce Mujuru in the next elections.
According to minutes of the meeting made available to ZimEye.com, the veterans claim that the current association has over-indulged itself in the ZANU PF factional wars and now uses the liberation fighters to move the wishes of different factional leaders. The minutes accuse the war vets association of diverting from being a welfare organisation to a Mugabe militia arm.
The convergence which was a follow up to a meeting held at the beginning of the month and exclusively reported by ZimEye.com further resolved that the new association will seek means of inviting fellow veteran and intelligence officer Dumiso Dabengwa now leader of ZAPU to be involved with them and work with Mujuru to dislodge Mugabe.
The veterans will lobby Mujuru to allow Dabengwa a top leadership position in the Mujuru led party. Several other former ZIPRA cadres are being mentioned for legislative positions in the Zimbabwe People First party to be led by Mujuru.
The new association is expected to be launched in Bulawayo on the 20th of March.

I agree with you in toto. We should be avoiding personality cults having learnt the negative consequences. The former Zipra cadres could also have done well by inviting their counterparts from Zanla. I am sure there are a lot of them who are disgruntled. I worked with some who did not even support the chaotic land reform programme and the $50000 that were dished out in 1997. It is not too late for these comrades to invite their colleagues and create an association that becomes a non-partisan national institution.
lts true i should not take risk EVEN ANGEL SAY SO

in 1978 you were 15 years old but still doing grade 3, which was not entirely uncommon those days. what was common was for youth of your age to emulate the “likeable” Jethro Mthunzi and cross to Zambia, which you conveniently didn’t do.

Well said Museyamwa. That is the way to go. The war veterans shall continue to be relevant if they take that approach of aligning themselves with Zimbabwe not with any particular leader.

Exactly my thoughts
And Cde Star & Number 11 ( ndookuti War Weterans kuya!!!!)
Why didn’t they ask their Zanla counterparts to do the same. I am sure we could have liked the idea too. Why promote the divisibility mentality if not tribalism

Commendable decision to leave the Zanu association but equally disastrous to pin yourselves to another individual, Mujuru. Why not stand for Zimbabwe and principles of good governance so your association can stand the trials of time? If you stand by Zimbabwe and not an individual then you can hold any leader, whether he/she may be a war veteran or not, to account based on your aspirations from the time you went to war. Make an institution of the war vets association.
I remember that guy Mthunzi, they came to my school, too at Kadziramwanda
Anything that augments, abates ,expedites or hasten the decimation and eventual demise of this ZANU PF evil is welcome to me……VIVA ZIPRA……Mina ngivela eGokwe Midlands and I was in Grade 3 when the Zipra forces came to our school in 1978 led by Jethro Mthunzi a very likable giant of a man whose politicization of our young minds remains etched & indelible……
