By Sports Analyst| The whole of Africa and especially Egypt were stunned on Saturday evening when Bafana Bafana of South Africa beat Egypt’s Pharaohs 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout round. The Cairo International was filled to capacity with 75 000 spectators filling the stadium. The host nation was one of the favourite teams in the tournament and was predicted to lift the cup for an eighth time. The winning goal of the match game was scored by Thembinkosi Lorch on the 85^th minute of the game. This is the first time that he started a match for Bafana Bafana in the tournament. Their coach Stuart Baxter praised his team for their effort and said it was a “master class”. South Africa now has to face Nigeria in the quarter finals on Wednesday.

South Africa is not the only team that has caused an upset in this AFCON tournament. Madagascar has gone past the expectation of many. The Barea first caused an upset in the group stages by beating Nigeria 2-0 in the group stages and going on to finish top of Group B.  The team then met the DRC in the knockout stages. DR Congo lost 4-2 on penalties to put them out of the tournament. The win means Madagascar is now progressing to the quarter finals of the AFCON 2019. Their upcoming game against Tunisia is a mile stone for the island’s football history. This will be the first time that the team will be participating in the AFCON final rounds. The game is scheduled to be played this Thursday.

Benin has also been an underdog in this tournament. Les Écureuils beat Morocco on Friday by 4-1 in a penalty shoot out. This will also be the first time the West African country will be playing past the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations. Benin will be playing against a strong Senegal team on Wednesday afternoon. Senegal beat Uganda 1-0 in the knock out stage of the tournament. Algeria scored three goals against Guinea to take them to the quarter finals against Ivory Coast on Thursday.
