No-one Will Be Evicted For Failing To Pay Rent During Coronavirus Lockdown – S.A. Govt

The South African Government has released a post on their twitter account on Friday morning the 17th of April stating that no person may be evicted from their homes during the South African Lockdown period.

This comes after a number of questions arose from tenants and landlords regarding a number of issues when it comes to lease agreements and failing to pay rent during the lockdown period.

According to the national government, ordinarily, the inability to pay rent falls as a bridge of contract however the Covid-19 pandemic is a natural disaster and conclusions deduced during this period cannot be ordinary.

The Cape Town department’s McIntosh Polela said in a statement this morning that the department would be speaking to its mayor’s to reinforce that no evictions are to be allowed during this period.

The government has taken on this decision to ensure the fight against Covid-19 is not compromised.
