Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Saturday 9 May, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 9 420.
This is an increase of 525, as the total number of confirmed cases stood at 8 895 on Friday 8 May.
Mkhize also announced the latest death toll of 186 — an increase of eight as it stood at 178 on Friday.
There have been 3153 recoveries in South Africa thus far and a total of 324 079 tests have been conducted.
LATEST COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE AS OF SATURDAY 9 MAY
The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Saturday:
- Gauteng – 1 910 cases;
- Western Cape – 4 809 cases;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 1 308 cases;
- Free State – 134 cases;
- Eastern Cape – 1 078 cases;
- Limpopo – 51 cases;
- Mpumalanga – 61 cases;
- North West – 41 cases;
- Northern Cape – 28 cases; and
- Unallocated – 0 cases.
The Western Cape is still the COVID-19 epicentre with the most positive cases in the country.
LATEST COVID-19 DEATHS IN EACH PROVINCE
The latest COVID-19 death toll in each province, according to Mkhize is as follows:
- Gauteng – 18 deaths;
- Western Cape – 95 deaths;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 43 deaths;
- Free State – six deaths;
- Eastern Cape – 21 deaths;
- Limpopo – three deaths;
- Mpumalanga – 0 deaths;
- North West – 0 deaths; and
- Northern Cape – 0 deaths.
This comes to a total of 186 deaths. The highest number of deaths was found in the Western Cape.
RECOVERIES IN EACH PROVINCE
The following COVID-19 recoveries have been made in each province:
- Gauteng – 1 036 recoveries;
- Western Cape – 1 122 recoveries;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 420 recoveries;
- Free State – 102 recoveries;
- Eastern Cape – 388 recoveries;
- Limpopo – 27 recoveries;
- Mpumalanga – 22 recoveries;
- North West – 20 recoveries; and
- Northern Cape – 16 recoveries.
