Police in Mutare have announced they are investigating a case of kidnapping, where a woman approximately 30 years old, snatched a minor (2) today in Dangamvura.

The suspect, who was clad in apostolic white garments, was noticed by an alert neighbour whilst walking away with the baby before she was attacked by members of the public.

Meanwhile, the ZRP warns members of the public against meting instant justice, the police said in a brief statement.

Residents teamed up in the morning to assault the woman who they suspected of kidnapping a two-year-old boy and hiding the toddler in her church garments.

The suspect only identified as Melody, is believed to be a resident of Area 13 in the same suburb.

The baby’s mother, Ms Shylet Mudengerezwa (20), said she shouted for help and residents gave chase in maize fields in the Nyamauru section of Dangamvura, after she saw Melody with her baby.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and the baby taken into the custody of the mother. She was detained at Dangamvura Police Station.
