Tropical Cyclone Chido is expected to hit Zimbabwe, bringing torrential rains and strong winds that may cause significant disruption. The cyclone will primarily affect Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, Midlands, and Harare provinces, with winds averaging 50 km/h and heavy rainfall that could result in destruction.
While the rain is much-needed, authorities are preparing for potential disasters. Nathan Nkomo, director of the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), reassured the public that evacuation points are being set up in vulnerable areas. “Cyclone Chido will bring much-needed rain, but, unfortunately, cyclones cause disasters,” Nkomo said ¹.
Preparations and Concerns
- The cabinet has approved the disaster response budget.
- Authorities are activating all systems and are on high alert in affected regions.
- Evacuation points are being established in cyclone-prone areas.
Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique, causing significant damage and disrupting communication. The cyclone’s impact is expected to be less severe in Zimbabwe than in neighboring countries.
Potential Risks
- Flash Flooding: Heavy rains could lead to flash flooding.
- Localized Damage: Wind gusts may cause localized damage, such as uprooted trees and roof damage.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that approximately 2.7 million people across six Southern African countries will be affected by Cyclone Chido ¹.
