The man who handed Businessman Phillip Chiyangwa an honorary doctorate in the Philippines, the so called ‘Dr’ Pythius Chovava has admitted obtaining four ordinary level subjects further confessing his links to fake universities that currently sell counterfeit degree certificates.
Lately, Chovava has been working for a dodgy Philippines-based so called Linus University that handed out Doctorate certificates to both Chiyangwa and Telecel founder James Makamba this year. In January the ever flamboyant Chiyangwa was handed the doctorate and most recently James Makamba got his at the end of May.
In this expose’ exclusively revealed by ZimEye, Pythius Chovava has since last week Friday been laboriously pleading for forgiveness with our reporters not to expose him any further. Per his own claims, that was after he was told he now risked losing his agency with the Philippines organization. But information at hand reveals he has been part of a money swindling enterprise that has seen countless Africans fall victim through losing their precious money. And Mr Chovava himself has already admitted at the least that his Irish University (from which he obtained his first PhD) and acted as an agent, is a dodgy institution. ZimEye is demanding the full list of all Zimbabweans who were handed the dodgy papers. However while the man has at present refused to divulge the list of Zimbos he facilitated in receiving the fake degree certificates, it has shockingly emerged that a known CBZ officer has been identified as one of beneficiaries from Chovava’s dirty services. ZimEye upholds that the full list of recipients of fake degrees should be made known with immediate effect if Chovava is to be forgiven at all.
ZimEye can also fully reveal that Chovava was running as an agent rather than a President
of the dodgy university as previously claimed. (Watch this space for Chovava’s full admission).
Chovava has now confirmed that our story titled “Philippines University’s President Only Got 4 O’Levels” was accurate. Concerning his four O’Levels, Chovava told our reporter Sam Dangarembga:
“You see when I started work … The background is not, its(sic)… You see my background my brother ini ndiri nherera[I am an orphan]. …Saka chikoro, kuti ndiende kuchikoro zvaiita vamwe, ini ndaiti I cut your grass, at night time I am going to school. I could not take my background as an excuse ndingadai ndiri kufudza mombe kumusha izvozvi. Saka I went to do my, I wrote my O’ levels in 1984, right? Ndakabuda 1984 ndakabuda ne four (O’Levels). Kwakuita sei? This lady wechirungu I would cut her grass for five days a month, and then I supplemented and came out with seven O’Levels”, he said though without revealing the time span when he got four O’Levels to the time he later came obtained seven.

“St. Linus University (SLU) is duly registered in the Commonwealth of Dominica as an online higher education institution under Dominica SRO No. 65 of 1996. Said law does not require SLU to be accredited in Dominica to issue a degree legally. Hence, SLU is not institutionally accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) Dominica or the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Philippines because the activities of Dominica-licensed private universities operating wholly outside that country are subject to statutory exemption and are the responsibility of the Registrar of Companies rather than the Ministry of Education as per IBC Act No. 10 of 1996.” It is clearly not a legitimate school but rather a company set up for this kind of scam…the “degree” has less utility than a letterhead from Kasukuwere’s defunct bank.
Two points:
1. All those who obtained “qualifications” from this university should have done their homework. Embassies can supply information about the status of any organisation claiming to be a university from their country. The internet can also be a source of information. How long shall the main search entry by Zimbabweans according to Google be Beyonce’s bottom when we can spend that time finding more useful information?
2. Even if Linus was a legitimate university, it is improper of Makamba and Chiyangwa to claim the title “Dr”, as these were “honorary” degrees. Honorary degrees are like awards, they are not based on academic prowess. Most recepients do not parade them, or when they do, they add h.c (standing for honoris causa)An example of a recepient of such a doctorate is American boxing promoter, Don King. You never hear him referred to as Dr King, do you? Yet we have a facebook page called Dr James Makamba.

This matter should be handled properly. It has potential to discredit qualifications from Zimbabwe.
If dodgy qualifications are actually being used to get employment or promotion an investigation needs to be launched by the ministry of education.
The problem is we don’t have a national qualifications authority to investigate such matters. This job cannot left to the ministry of education.
