Terrence Mawawa, Chivhu | The powerful First Lady Grace Mugabe has gone missing in action for several days since the day angry civilians took control of the Beitbridge border post last week.
Grace left thousands of Zanu PF supporters dejected after she failed to turn up for her own rally held at Sadza Growth point, Mashonaland East, last Saturday. This was a day after the government’s customs duty department was overpowered by victims of the abusive import ban which eventually led to the Beitbridge border being shut down for the first time since the downfall of former Prime Minister Ian Smith’s government in 1979.
Thousands of ruling party supporters, mainly members of the Women’s League were disappointed after Mrs Mugabe failed to attend the rally she was scheduled to address. The First Lady neither apologised nor explained reasons for her no show, party sources told ZimEye.com.
As factional battles continue in the crisis ridden Zanu PF, it is understood that Mrs Mugabe withdrew from the event fearing a backlash from not only enemies of the G-40, but also the fiery civil unrest which has exposed the government’s demoralised security apparatus.
Ironically also the Sadza area under Chikomba District, is Mrs Mugabe’s own family territory, where she grew up.
Party sources told ZimEye.com Mrs Mugabe left ZANU PF supporters fuming when they learnt that Eunice Sandi Moyo was standing in for her. Moyo was accompanied by Goromonzi West MP Beatrice Nyamupinga- who is also the acting chairlady for Mashonaland East Province.
“The First Lady never explained why she failed to attend the rally,” said a party source.
They continued, “thousands of party supporters were not happy with her no show. The women who lined up to welcome the First Lady were left dejected after realising she was nowhere to be seen. We understand there is a lot of tension here so she elected to bunk the rally.”
Mrs Mugabe’s whereabouts were not clear at the time of writing, and attempts to obtain a comment from the State House were fruitless.
Last year Mrs Mugabe failed to attend a rally held at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo following fierce clashes with war veterans and the Zanu PF provincial leadership along factional lines.
