Mnangagwa’s Shocking Record Of 162 Human Rights Abuses In Less Than A Week.

One Minute It Was An Afghan Wedding. The Next, A Funeral For 63.

At least 63 people have been killed and scores wounded in an explosion targeting a wedding in the Afghan capital, officials said yesterday, the deadliest attack in Kabul this year.
The suicide blast took place on Saturday evening in the men’s reception area of the Dubai City wedding hall in western Kabul, in a minority Shia neighbourhood, packed with people celebrating a marriage.
Women and children were among the casualties, interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said yesterday. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) group claimed responsibility for the attack yesterday.
The attack came as the Taliban and the United States are trying to negotiate an agreement on the withdrawal of US forces in exchange for a Taliban commitment on security and peace talks with Afghanistan’s US-backed government.
The Taliban denied any involvement, calling Saturday’s blast “forbidden and unjustifiable”, but Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, said that the group “cannot absolve themselves of blame, for they provide platform for terrorists”.
In a series of tweets yesterday, Ghani strongly condemned the “inhumane attack” and called for an “extraordinary security meeting to review and prevent such security lapses.”
The blast occurred near the stage where musicians were and “all the youths, children and all the people who were there were killed,” witness Gul Mohammad said.
In the aftermath of the attack, images from inside the hall showed blood-stained bodies on the ground along with pieces of flesh and torn clothes, hats, sandals and bottles of mineral water.
Charlotte Bellis, reporting from an emergency hospital in central Kabul, where many of the injured were being treated, said: “Dozens of people are waiting for any news of loved ones.
“People have been ferried here all night, the wounded and also the dead, people caught up in this explosion,” she added.
One witness, Sahi, said he was at the back of the wedding hall when the explosion happened.
“It was very big,” he told Al Jazeera. “I fell down where I was. When I stood up I saw tables and people were scattered everywhere. The scene was awful. My brother was injured. Most of my friends were killed.”
Ahmad Omid, another survivor, said that about 1 200 guests had been invited to the wedding for his father’s cousin. “I was with the groom in the other room when we heard the blast and then I couldn’t find anyone. Everyone was lying all around the hall.”
Sunni Muslim armed groups, including the Taliban and ISIL have repeatedly attacked the Shia Hazara minorities in Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan over the years.
Fighters have periodically struck Afghan weddings, which are seen as easy targets because they frequently lack rigorous security precautions.
On July 12, at least six people were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a wedding ceremony in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar. ISIL, which has a growing footprint in the region, claimed the blast. At least 40 people were killed in an explosion at a wedding hall in Kabul in November 2018.
The latest attack shattered more than a week of relative calm in the Afghan capital.
On August 7, a Taliban car bomb aimed at Afghan security forces detonated on the same road, killing 14 people and wounding 145 — most of them women, children and other civilians. — AP
ARRESTING POLICE OFFICER WHO SPLIT WOMAN’S HEAD: Samakomva Comes Out, But…
By Own Correspondent | The investigation to arrest the police officer who smashed a 51 year old woman’s head on Friday, took a twist last night when a convolution in names emerged. ORIGINAL ARTICLE – There was drama on Sunday night when a Rusape based man, Mr Clever Samakomva banged out voicing that he is not at all a police officer as was alleged following the Friday assaulting of innocent civilians by police officers in Harare.
The 41 year old, whose identity was confirmed by human rights advocate Dr Muzvare Betty Makoni, said he was nowhere near Harare on Friday the 16th August when the unplanned demonstration by civilians in Harare happened.
The demonstration saw several people injured by police officers most whose identity could not be established at the close of day, Sunday. Several mothers with their children were taken to Harare Police Station. (SEE THE LIVE VIDEO of the helpless women inside the holding area inside the station with their hungry suckling kids).
One of the police officers was named as Mr Clever Makomva from Rugoi village, in Rusape. This led civilians to conclude that the individual is Mr Samakomva. In the Manica dialect, the “Sa” prefix is traditionally added to a Male person’s surname – the equivalent honorary of the English, “Sir.” It was believed he is the notorious cop who smashed a 51 year old mother’s head, leaving her nearly totally lifeless in the open street near the Unity Square in the Harare CBD.

The scenes were captured on video by journalists and the public from several angles.

As is our dedication at ZimEye to give our valued readers not one side, nor two sides, not even three or four, but 12 sides to each story, we herewith give Mr Samakomva the opportunity to clear his name. His testimony was supported by Dr Makoni who also said he is not at all a police officer and the case is only one of mistaken identity. Added to this Samakomva said his surname is not Makomva, but Samakomva (imprinted onto his identity document and birth certificate). Tbe below LIVE engagement happened as emotions shifted from raging anger to sympathy for Samakomva.

Jacob Zuma Grand Daughter Shot Dead By Lover For Ending Relationship

A relative of former president Jacob Zuma was allegedly shot and killed by her “jealous” fiancé after learning their relationship was over.
Police allege Silindile Zuma, 30, was shot twice in the face by Mbuzeleni Mpungose, 33, when she told him she wanted to end the relationship.
Mpungose made another brief appearance before Vanitha Armu at the Durban Magistrate’s Court last week.
State prosecutor Calvin Govender asked for the matter to be postponed to August 29 for a bail application, which was granted by Armu.
Mpungose, who was allegedly on the run after the July 8 killing of Zuma, was arrested after investigating officer Constable Godfrey Goss of the Cato Manor murder unit tracked him to Eshowe, in Zululand, earlier this month.
Zuma and Mpungose were in a relationship since 2013 and he was in the process of paying lobola for her hand in marriage.
She lived in Durban, worked at a popular franchise restaurant and was the sole breadwinner in her home, while Mpungose was based in Eshowe.
When he learnt that Zuma wanted to end their relationship, he travelled to Durban to confront her. He stayed with a friend in Cato Manor, the night before the alleged killing.
On the day of the shooting, Zuma was reluctant to take Mpungose to her home in the CBD for their talk. However, she agreed to go with him to his friend’s house in Cato Manor after she completed her shift at work.
The couple got out of a taxi and were walking to the house when they began to argue.
That is when Mpungose allegedly shot her and fled the scene.
Zuma’s body was discovered the next day by a passer-by and police were able to confirm her identity through the uniform and name badge she wore.
According to a police source, Zuma told a colleague about her alleged meeting with Mpungose and that is what confirmed him as a suspect.
The source said that Mpungose told his family about the shooting before going into hiding into a “deep rural” part of Eshowe, but police were able to catch him unawares during the early hours of August 5.
A family member, who asked not to be named said, they had struggled emotionally and financially since Zuma’s death.
The source described Zuma as a warm and friendly person.
“She loved joking and she was easy to get along with. People enjoyed being around her because she was friendly.”
The family member also said that the dead woman was related to Jacob Zuma, who was “like a grandfather” to her.
“During ceremonies, the family still comes together, including the former president,” said the relative.
Malawi Constitutional Court Battles To Keep Lawyers In Electoral Dispute Under Check As Tensions Sore In Court

The Malawian Constitutional Court hearing the presidential election case from UTM Party presidential candidate Saulos Chilima and his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) counterpart, Lazarus Chakwera, has given revised directions on cross-examination of witnesses and objections from the lawyers to ensure expedited trial.
Judge Healey Potani, chair of the five-judge panel of Dingiswayo Madise, Redson Kapindu, Mike Tembo and Ivy Kamanga, sitting as the Constitutional Court in Lilongwe, on Friday provided directions on how the matter should proceed, saying on cross-examination, lawyers should only be focussing on matters that are under dispute.
He said parties have been directed to file supplementary checklist by Wednesday 4pm to indicate facts that are not in dispute.
The ConCourt further directs that cross-examination will only be done by notice and parties interested to conduct cross-examination should also indicate specific areas of cross-examination.
“This will serve two useful purposes, one that witness will come prepared, second cross examination will be more focused,” said Justice Potani.
The ConCourt also directed that a subsequent cross examining party will not be allowed to repeat the same question that has been previously tackled by the first or initial preceding cross examination.
“The other aspect we wish to give direction on is the objection on cross examination; we are very mindful that parties are entitled to raise objection, yes when rules have been flouted. However, there will be instances where objections are clearly [nefarious] and in those instance the courts will not hesitate to summarily overrule the objection.”
But he said where the objections will be well founded, the court will give attention.
Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale, who is representing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) the second respondent, as government chief legal advisor, contributed to the housekeeping issues and asked the ConCourt about the record of the proceedings.
Laywer Charles Mhango, representing President Peter Mutharika, asked the court to allow each party to the case to be allowed to ask the same questions to a witness in relation to how their client is involved.
After the housekeeping issue, first petitioner Chilima returned to the witness stand for further cross-examination by Mutharika’s lawyers.
Lawyer Frank Mbeta started asking questions to Chilima to confirm that he did not contest as MP or Councillor in the May Tripartite Elections and to confirm that his UTM party only won four seats in Parliament.
Mbeta further asked Chilima to confirm that the party’s losing Parliamentary candidates and the four that won are not a party to the electoral case.
Chilima confirmed all the facts, saying he is only seeking to nullify the presidential elections.
Then Mbeta further asked about the wording of his court petition by including the term tripartite elections which Chilima said he need the legal team to look into that.
But Chilima lawyers raised an objection when Mbeta asked about party monitors with Dr Chikosa Silungwe saying the court had just directed the hearing to avoid repetitive questions.
“In any event asking the witness the rationale in the involvement of monitors in an election is not only interperative of the law but also evaluating of the evidence so I object that question,” said Silungwe.
ConCourt directed Mbeta to ask other questions as the role of monitors was already asked and exhausted by Attorney General who had five days of cross-examining Chilima.
When Mbeta asked another question about role of monitors, Justice Kamanga intervened to remind him the question was also previously asked by the Attorney General.
Continuing with the cross-examination, Mbeta asked Chilima about assertion that DPP cadets had been involved in dispatching of ballot papers and whether Chilima has evidence of that allegation.
Chilima said in response: “On record, no.”
He showed Chilima pictures of some gadgets and asked about use of unusual gadgets by UTM monitors who were arrested by police during the election period.
This prompted another objection from Silungwe who asked the ConCourt to remove the question, saying the picture circulated is not on court record and Chilima has been ambushed with the pictures.
Silungwe said the use of suspicious gadgets was introduced to justify the arrest of some UTM monitors during the elections.
Mbeta, however, explained that the question had risen from claims by Chilima in his petition that some UTM monitors were arrested during elections without any reason.
The ConCourt ruled that Chilima should answer the questions.
The MCP and UTM Party presidential candidates claim the presidential elections were rigged in favour of Mutharika who was declared winner with 38 percent of the votes trailed by Chakwera with 35 percent and Chilima with 20 percent.
The electoral case started in earnest last week before but the proceedings were adjourned on Thursday to give room to the Supreme Court to rule on an appeal President Peter Mutharika and Electoral Commission had filed to throw out the presidential election petition case for being filed “irregularly” and “illegally”.
A panel of seven Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal judges led by Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda flanked by Justices Rezine Mzikamanda, Anthony Kamanga, Edward Twea, Dunstain Mwaungulu, Lovemore Chikopa and Edgar Kapanda, dismissed the appeal with costs .

SADC Declares Day Of Action Against Sanctions On Zimbabwe

Sadc countries have declared October 25 as solidarity day against sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and resolved to conduct various activities in their respective countries on that day to resoundingly call for the immediate removal of the sanctions.
The secretariat has also since been tasked to escalate the lobby with the current African Union chairperson, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who will be expected to raise the issue at the upcoming 74th United Nations General Assembly in September this year.
In a communiqué of the 39th Sadc Summit of the Heads of State and Government that was read out yesterday to mark the end of the indaba, Sadc Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax said the embargo was militating against economic growth in both Zimbabwe and the region.
“Summit noted the adverse impact on the economy of Zimbabwe and the region at large of prolonged economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and expressed solidarity with Zimbabwe, and called for the immediate lifting of sanctions to facilitate socio-economic recovery in the country,” said Dr Tax.
“Summit declared the 25 October as the date on which Sadc member states can collectively voice their disapproval of the sanctions through various activities and platforms until the sanctions are lifted.”
President Mnangagwa told local media in an interview yesterday on the sidelines of the just-ended summit that the 16 member states, which were unanimous on the position that has been taken, would also engage the continental body to raise the issue with the United Nations.
“Well, as Zimbabwe, we were very pleased that this time around Sadc was unanimous on the issue of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe. We resolved that we must pronounce ourselves as Sadc that sanctions on Zimbabwe should be lifted; that our secretariat should communicate that position of Sadc to the AU, so that the AU chairman, at the United Nations, can also pronounce the position of Sadc and the position of AU,” said the President.
“We are happy that again it was emphatic that there was no cause or need for sanctions to continue; after all, the basis for the sanctions are not there anymore, and they were illegal at the time when they were imposed by a few Western countries, America and the EU. So, we are very happy with that.”
Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa returned home yesterday afternoon from the 39th SADC Summit in Tanzania where he assumed the chairmanship of Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Corporation.
He was received at the Robert Mugabe International Airport by Vice-President Kembo Mohadi, Harare Metropolitan Minister Oliver Chidau, State Security Minister Owen Ncube, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda, service chiefs, Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana and senior Government officials.

Govt Promises Further Salary Adjustments For Civil Servants

GOVERNMENT is understood to be preparing a “meaningful offer” for civil servants as it seeks to address the challenges they face of high prices of goods and services.
The offer is set to be tabled during the next engagement of the National Joint Negotiating Council, which is expected to meet in the near future.
According to state media, a top Government official close to the negotiations confirmed that indeed, a package that should go a long way in cushioning civil servants has been decided.
“Government, taking its cue from its engagements with the Apex Council, is preparing a meaningful offer to address hardships facing civil servants for discussions during the next meeting of the National Joint Negotiating Council to be convened soon,” said the source on condition of anonymity.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Dr Sekai Nzenza confirmed that the Government and the Apex Council, which represents civil servants, will resume negotiations soon. But she declined to say the figure that Government would table.
“The negotiations will start soon on civil servants salaries. No figure (has been agreed) yet,” said Dr Nzenza.
Government is keen to improve the welfare of its employees and is frantically working towards that since the start of the year, on the back of a wave of unwarranted increases of prices of goods and services.
On July 18, Government and its workers held a National Joint Negotiating Council meeting, where an agreement was reached to pay a cushioning allowance of $400 to all civil servants to provide relief from the harsh economic environment.
The cushioning allowance was extended as a once-off payment for the month of July, while negotiations continued on a cost of living adjustment (COLA), to further cushion civil servants for the remaining five months of the year.

Form Four Pupil Killed And Hanged In Beerhall After Gambling Session Goes Wrong

A FORM Four pupil at Msiteli High School was found hanging from a roof truss at a beerhall near his home on Friday in a suspected case of foul play.
Nhlanhla Radasa (17) of Bulawayo’s Tshabalala suburb was found dead on Friday morning after spending the previous day gambling with friends, sources said.
The friends are alleged to be from Nkulumane near Munyoro Shopping Centre.
It is alleged that an altercation broke out after he kept on winning and his friends refused to pay him. The argument allegedly degenerated into a fistfight and the friends ganged up on him and assaulted him until he fell unconscious.
“We suspect that the friends tried to stage a suicide after realising that they had killed him. He may have been still alive but they must have panicked and hanged him there, thinking that he was dead,” said the source.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube yesterday said police were investigating the case.
“I can confirm that we are dealing with a case where a 17-year-old male from Tshabalala suburb in Bulawayo was found hanging from roof trusses at a beer garden in the suburb. We are still carrying out our investigations,” said Inspector Ncube.
“The deceased was found hanging there by workers at the beer hall and patrons who notified residents. The beer hall is very close to his home, therefore most of the people that gathered could recognise him and therefore his family was notified and police were called to the scene,” he said.
The body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for postmortem. Police have not yet released the autopsy results.
A woman who identified herself as the family spokesperson and aunt to the deceased said they could not divulge details on the matter as it could jeopardise police investigations.
“No comment. We cannot tell you anything because it’s still being investigated. Go and write whatever you want and we will take action against you if you publish without our consent,” she said.
Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Mrs Olicah Kaira said she had not yet been informed of the incident but lamented the recent cases of suicides and general deaths of pupils in the city.
“This is very worrying and so painful. Over the past year the cases of suicide and general deaths of school pupils has been on the high. We need to work on measures to better help our learners,” said Mrs Kaira.
Sources said gambling is a problem at Msiteli High School and police have been called on numerous occasions to address the challenge at the school. The problem is mostly prevalent among boys, who bet on games for money. A number of violent fights have broken out during the gambling sessions.
SB Moyo: Discovery Of Arms Cache, MDC Leaders’ Statements Caused 16 Aug Demo Ban
Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo has said the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) issued a prohibition order against the opposition MDC’s planned peaceful protest on 16 August 2019 due to the discovery of a cache of weapons.
In a statement on Sunday, SB Moyo said that the inflammatory statements made by the MDC-A leadership coupled with the discovery of a weapons cache (catapults and granite stones), necessitated the ban of the planned march.
He quoted by the state media said in part:
On 15 August, in the wake of highly irresponsible and inflammatory statements made by the MDC-A leadership and on the basis of a weapons cache discovered a few days previously, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), as the civil authority responsible for ensuring law and order, issued a prohibition order effectively denying legal authority for the demonstration to proceed the following day.
The prohibition order was communicated to the MDC-A well in time to enable them to advise their supporters that authorisation for the demonstration had been denied. Per their constitutional rights, the MDC-A appealed to the High Court seeking to overturn the civil authority’s prohibition order. In its wisdom, the High Court upheld the civil authority’s decision and dismissed the MDC-A’s appeal.
The fact that the MDC-A leadership — themselves noted lawyers — decided to defy both the civil authority and the High Court and to proceed in a highly confrontational manner with an illegal demonstration was as irresponsible as it was unfortunate.
They must take full responsibility for the consequences of their injudicious actions and their statements to incite and encourage their followers to challenge the law whilst they ‘led’ from ‘positions of safety’.
Once again, the MDC-A, as part of its relentless attention-seeking agenda, has incited public unrest at home to coincide with a key international event.
The deliberate act of defiance of 16th August was timed to coincide with the SADC Summit meeting scheduled to take place the following day, 17th August, in Tanzania at which Zimbabwe will assume the Chairmanship of the Regional Organ on Politics, Defence and Security.
The action was designed to achieve two specific objectives: firstly, by fomenting instability at home, to cast doubt among SADC leaders with regard to the suitability of Zimbabwe to take on the leadership of this key SADC Organ; and, secondly, to have Zimbabwe included in the agenda of the SADC Summit with the hope of breathing new life into their already long-discredited ‘legitimacy’ claims and with the intention of attaining their and their foreign backers’ objective of imposing some form of regional or continental mediation process upon our Government.
Once again, they have failed. Both they and those within Zimbabwe and beyond who continue to harbour such fantasies and who continue to pursue the politics of regime change by way of violence and terror and who must surely shoulder much responsibility for the ugly scenes witnessed in the streets of Harare on 16 August and indeed the tragic events of 1 August 2018 and 14/15 January, 2019, should simply cease and desist.
… Whilst the scenes which unfolded in our streets were indeed distressing to behold — as they are in any such circumstances — order was swiftly re-established and instances of serious confrontation avoided.
There have been no reports of any serious injuries. Social media allegations of fatalities are simply ‘fake news’ and must be rejected with contempt.
Police Officially Block MDC Byo Demo

State Media|POLICE yesterday issued a prohibition order against a demonstration planned by MDC-Alliance in Bulawayo today, saying anyone taking part in such action will face the full wrath of the law.
A prohibition notice compels one to stop an activity immediately.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the decision to ban the demonstration was arrived at following extensive consultations between the convener and the other stakeholders who include the business community.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to advise members of the public that the regulating authority for the Bulawayo Central District has issued a Prohibition Notice in terms of section 26 (9) of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA), Chapter 11:17 against the holding of a demonstration by MDC and its partners scheduled on 19 August 2019. This was after an extensive consultation with the convener and other stakeholders who include the business community.
“The High Court has since confirmed a Prohibition Notice after a court case had been filed the Bulawayo business community today (yesterday) citing security concerns,” he said.
Section 26 (9) of POSA reads: “After considering representations made in the course of a meeting held in terms of subsection (3), if any, the regulating authority may, if he or she on reasonable grounds is convinced that no amendment or condition contemplated in subsection (5) or (6) would prevent the occurrence of any of the circumstances contemplated in subsection (3), issue a prohibition notice, giving the reasons and grounds therefore to the convener.”
Ass Comm Nyathi assured the nation that officers were on high alert to deal with rogue elements following the intended demonstration called for by the MDC-Alliance and its partners.
“Police have deployed to maintain law and order in all parts of the country. We implore the public to cooperate with the police as they seek to protect all Zimbabweans and visitors in the country,” he said.
Ass Comm Nyathi said members of the public should continue with their economic and social activities, saying the environment was calm.
He urged people to report any form of intimidation, threats, violence or obstruction of traffic to Bulawayo police operations on 09-885279, 881925 or Harare on 0242-703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.
Ass Comm Nyathi said the police will be conducting patrols, surveillance, stop and searches to ensure law and order is maintained in all areas of the country. In this regard, security for all citizens is guaranteed to conduct their social and economic activities.
According to the Prohibition Notice signed by the Officer Commanding Bulawayo Central District, Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Phiri, some of the reasons cited for barring the MDC Alliance demonstration include flashes of violence, which were reported along Luveve Road last Friday during which roads were barricaded with tree branches and rocks. On the same day, a Harare-bound bus had its windows smashed while it was loading. Police also cited the recent bombing of war veterans’ Bulawayo provincial offices in Entumbane suburb.
Last week police issued a statement saying they had concrete evidence showing that MDC-Alliance had plans to roll out violent demonstrations, considering the assortment of weapons the force found being smuggled into parts of Harare.
An MDC Alliance’s attempt to stage a demonstration in the capital failed on Friday after the High Court upheld a prohibition order that had been issued by police. However, a few dozen opposition activists defied the ban and tried to converge at Africa Unity Square in Harare. Police dispersed them and arrested 91 of them.
Clearing the Air On The So Called Dossier On Mayor Herbert Gomba | FULL TEXT

Since time immemorial Herbert Gomba has been accused of many things in his capacity as Cllr and of late as a Mayor. It must be put on record that these allegations are mere political shenanigans being alleged by political opponents hiding under the pretexts of dubious allegations that are fictitious, uninformed and to say the least baseless.
Politically he was chosen to be a Treasurer for Greater Harare in his party MDC and nothing under hand or below the cuff happened. He was resoundingly endorsed. Its therefore tomfoolery to suggest that the entirety of Harare and Chitungwiza were bribed to elevate him. To prove that the whole article is just a political high sounding nothing is the manner in which the Gweru congress and the August 16 demonstration are sneaked into the fray without evidence to sustain the allegations.
It must therefore be put on a record that Mayor Gomba doesn’t know anything about SMARTPRIDES and he hasn’t got any land from Clr Matinyanya in or around Mbare. It must be pointed for the benefit of those who doesn’t know that according to the ministerial directive (2002), clrs shall get one stand each at 40% discount and can also access a commercial stand at 100% payment. These are privileges known in local gvnt. The mayor is not conflicted in any way and he is aware that all these are just sideshows meant to distract him from delivering the SMART agenda for the people of Harare.
Violence Rocks Dembare, Hwange Match
HOOLIGANISM reared its ugly head in a Castle Lager Premiership match at the Colliery Stadium yesterday resulting in a 21-minute stoppage in the 55th minute when an overzealous Dynamos fan scaled the perimeter fence and sprinted to the Hwange goal area where he sprinkled an unidentified liquid substance from a plastic bottle.
This led to skirmishes in the terraces which degenerated into chaos as missiles rained onto the pitch from all directions forcing referee Prince Mathumo to stop the match.
Play only resumed after 21 minutes after riot police were deployed around the stadium with the hierarchy from both sets of the teams’ supporters also working overtime to calm down the agitated fans.
Match commissioner and Zifa Matabeleland North chairman Dennis Tshuma said: “The rowdy Dynamos fan was the cause of the stoppage. The safety of the players was hugely compromised and play had to be stopped. We will prepare the necessary reports citing facts for the authorities to act on.”
Away from the pandemonium that left a number of fans injured, it was Hwange who took the lead five minutes from the breather through an own goal by Godfrey Mukambi when goalkeeper Munyaradzi Diya’s clearance ricocheted off his knee into the back of the net.
Five minutes later all hell then broke loose leading to the lengthy stoppage.
When play finally resumed, DeMbare levelled nine minutes from time through a cheeky free kick by Godknows Murwira, which eluded the wall and left goalkeeper Collen Phiri clutching thin air.State media

High Court Blocks MDC Byo Demonstration

State Media|THE High Court has blocked today’s planned demonstration by the MDC in Bulawayo following an urgent chamber application by some ZANU PF aligned residents, business community and churches.
Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Thompson Mabhikwa ruled that MDC could not go ahead with the demonstrations after the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers’ Association, the Bulawayo United Residents’ Association (BURA), the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) and the Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) yesterday approached the High Court on an urgent basis seeking an order prohibiting the opposition party from carrying out the demonstrations in the city.
In papers before the court, the applicants through their lawyers Joel Pincus, Konson and Wolhuter Legal Practitioners, cited MDC-Alliance, the Officer Commanding Police in Bulawayo Central District Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Phiri and her boss Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga, as respondents.
“Pending the return date, the first respondent (MDC-Alliance) is temporarily prohibited from carrying out and convening a public demonstration and procession in terms of the first respondent’s notice dated 8 August 2019, such notice having been issued in terms of Section 24 of the Public Order and Security Act,” ruled Justice Mabhikwa.
In his founding affidavit, Mr Rodgers Hove, who is the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers’ Association’s committee member, said the intended demonstration was likely to turn violent hence they were likely to suffer irreparable harm through loss of property and business.
“This is an urgent chamber application petitioning for the temporary prohibition of the MDC-Alliance’s intended demonstration scheduled for 19 August 2019. The applicants’ petition for temporary relief as they contend that no adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the first respondent’s demonstration will not occasion irreparable harm, grievous inconvenience, public endangerment, serious injury, loss of property and business,” he said.
Mr Hove argued that although they fully respected that MDC-Alliance had a right to protest and demonstrate, they had a compelling and reasonable fear that they would suffer and experience losses similar to the January 14-16 violent protests.
“The MDC-Alliance seeks to occupy Bulawayo central business district for the whole day and yet they do not even address the issue of public and property safety, an issue of direct interest to the applicants. Nothing expressive is said about the potential destruction of property and likelihood of monetary loss by businesses,” he said.
Mr Hove said some of their members were yet to receive compensation after their businesses were looted during the January protests.
The others applicants, in their supporting affidavits, concurred with the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers’ Association, saying they suffered when their products were looted and destroyed in January. They said there was a reasonable fear that there would be a repeat was of the January protests if no stringent measures were employed to ensure MDC-Alliance’s protests were peaceful.
GMAZ deputy national chairperson Mr Masimba Dzomba said their members lost stock worth US$1 million with some of the consignment having been supplied on credit.
Last week, MDC-Alliance’s bid to quash a police order prohibiting their planned demonstrations in Harare hit a brick wall after Harare High Court judge Justice Joseph Musakwa dismissed the application saying the political party had jumped the gun.
1MDC-Alliance had notified the police of their planned demonstration on August 5 this year but the police on Thursday issued an order prohibiting the event for security reasons.

Triangle Roll Past FC Platinum
A SOLID performance by Triangle United earned them a deserved win over champions FC Platinum in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Gibbo yesterday.
First half goals from Collins Dhuwa and Praise Tonha set up a solid foundation for the hosts who have now managed to avoid defeat in 10 league matches and 11 in all competitions.
Triangle came close in the 12th minute with evergreen captain Ralph Kawondera directing his tame header wide after a perfect cross from Gerald Bhero.
A minute later, they took the lead, Dhuwa benefited from an Allen Tavarwisa pass and put his effort beyond goalkeeper Francis Tizayi’s reach.
Triangle were the better side in the opening exchanges and they were 2-0 up in the 18th minute.
This time it was Praise Tonha who struck with a thunderbolt from dead-ball outside the 18yard box.
FC Platinum had their chances to score in the first half but were not clinical in front of goal.
Hagaizo Magaya won a penalty for FC Platinum in the 32nd minute but William Stima went for the spectacular and crashed his effort against the crossbar.State media

SADC Declares “Anti-Sanctions” Day
Sadc countries have declared October 25 as solidarity day against illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and resolved to conduct various activities in their respective countries on that day to resoundingly call for the immediate removal of the sanctions.
“Summit declared the 25 October as the date on which Sadc member states can collectively voice their disapproval of the sanctions through various activities and platforms until the sanctions are lifted.”State media

Detained Activists To Appear In Court Today
Twenty-six suspects who were arrested on Friday for participating in an illegal demonstration organised by the MDC Alliance were yesterday remanded in custody to Monday for bail application.
The activists were arrested for various offences arising from the illegal demonstration which the police had earlier prohibited.

Initially 91 people were arrested, however, some were released after paying fines.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not ascertain the number of people who had been released.
“I am no longer in the office at the moment. I cannot ascertain the number of people who have been fined and those who have appeared in court,” he told The Sunday Mail last night.
“I will, however, be able to give you the figures tomorrow morning.”
Through their lawyer Jeremiah Bhamu, the gang yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Richard Ramaboea.
Prosecutor Mr George Manokore requested that the accused be remanded in custody until tomorrow pending further investigations into the case.
“The state requests that the accused be remanded to 19 August pending further investigations on the matter,” he said.
The accused persons’ lawyer did not contest the date and said he would seek to challenge further remand of the accused or alternatively seek bail.
After hearing submissions from both parties, the magistrate rolled the matter to tomorrow.
The accused were arrested in Harare after the MDC-A organised demonstration was barred by police on Thursday in fear of the protest turning violent.
MDC-A the made an urgent High Court application seeking to challenge the police decision, but the bid hit a brick wall after Justice Joseph Musakwa dismissed it and upheld the prohibition.State media
Protesters Tortured By Zanu PF Youths
A local human rights lobby group Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has claimed that the opposition activists who were arrested on Friday during demonstrations in Harare were handed over to Zanu PF youths who tortured them amid fears some are still missing.
Posting on Twitter yesterday NGO Forum revealed that those who were arrested were taken to the Zanu PF provincial offices at Fourth street.
“Victims of police brutality from #August16 protests report that they were handed over to ZANU PF youths at the ZANU PF Office in 4th Street where they were tortured. Others are feared to have been disappeared,” said the organisation.ZIMUCU

Arrests, Abductions and Torture: A Manifestation Of Legitimacy Crisis, Militarization
The MDC Students Council notes with utter dismay, disdain and exasperation at the continued corrosion of the rights of citizens, the closure of political space and the belligerence, aggressiveness and exclusiveness by this junta masquerading as a new dispensation.
As a Council we are increasingly riled by the incessant abductions, torture and arrests of pro-democracy activists. In particular the abduction and torture of Tatenda Mombeyarara of the Citizen’s Manifesto and Blessing Kanotunga MDC Mufakose District Youth Chairperson. These abductions and beatings are undoubtedly state sponsored.
We also note with deep concern the politically motivated conviction of the people’s chief, Chief Ndiweni. His only crime is to be on the people’s side.
What is shocking is that these attacks are occurring in a “New Dispensation” which promised reform and openness.
These are very worrying and troubling times in which citizens are living in fear of this monster called the “New Dispensation”. This monster is in overdrive. It is desperately trying to reverse history, trying desperately to panel beat our future. Stitching, patching up, concocting all kinds brew.
As the innocent sleep, the hollow men of this monster are busy gestating a horrible Frankenstein from the deep evil chambers of their dirty bowels.
The junta is plotting to assassinate people in this month of August, to burn people’s houses, to bomb our houses and to arrest the top leadership of our movement as they have done to our National Chairperson Thabita Khumalo.
This is indeed a dangerous period.
More than ever, Zimbabwe is being run by a group of men and women who are selfish, existential and will do anything legally and extra-legally to reproduce their rule.
As the MDC Students Council we are of the view that the crisis of legitimacy is in an incestuous relationship with the crisis of securocracy and violence. The crisis of legitimacy that was born of a stolen election and the crisis of militarization of the State born of a coup executed in November 2017 are both manifesting themselves through these abductions and arrests.
This junta did not derive consent to govern from the people. It is therefore trying to buy consent through the use of violence.

Zidane Speaks On Bale Future
Farai Dziva|Real Madrid coach Zinadine Zidane has confirmed that talented Welshman Gareth Bale will stay at the Spanish giants.
The two had a relationship which reached boiling point during pre-season, with the French coach suggesting that Bale leaving the club would be “best for everyone” while the player’s agent responded by saying Zidane is a “disgrace”.
That seems to have all been forgotten, as Bale started in the 3-1 win away to Celta Vigo and the coach confirming he will not be leaving.
“He [Bale] is going to stay,” Zidane said after the game . “Everyone we have helps us to think positively.
“You have to focus on the season, nothing more. Hazard’s injury was bad luck for us, but it didn’t change the idea we had with Bale starting the game.
“Gareth, James, Everyone here is going to defend the shirt the way it deserves to be.” added the Frenchman.

Former VP Mphoko Issues His Full Version Of Arrest Attempt By ZACC Officers
By A Correspondent- Former Vice President has revealed the full version of what transpired when he refused to comply with ZACC officers who attempted to arrest him on August 16 2019.
Officers from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission attempted to arrest him without any warrant of arrest at his home in Douglasdale, Bulawayo but he refused to comply with their order challenging them to avail a warrant of arrest.
In his detailed statement, Mphoko narrates how the officers came to his home seeking his assistance on a matter they were investigating.
He claimed that after some discussions, the officers left and came back later saying he is under arrest.
A video that was posted on social shows Mphoko engaging in a civil conversation with the officers who clearly say they have no case concerning him.
Find the full statement below:
Mr. Tsindi, in his opening remarks claimed that they left Harare Friday morning for Bulawayo, for an interview with me.
They did not inform me of their coming because they did not have my contact numbers. However I informed that, I am a public figure, or simple they could have contacted the Bulawayo Presidents office or department for my numbers.
He however, insisted that they had not informed them, but passed through Hillside police station, to collect an officer because Douglasdale falls under Hillside police station.
He informed that there were allegations against me they were investigating and they needed my input with an aim of responding to those allegations, of which, once signed, in front of my lawyer, the case will be closed.
ZACC is aware that this case had been dismissed by the courts 3 times before the intervention took place.
Tsindi, informed that this has to be done at ZACC offices at Mhlahlandlela. I asked them if they could bring their documents here for me to sign with the assistance and presence of my lawyer, they agreed and then left.
On their return, later in the afternoon, they had changed their position from that of signing the document and closing the case, but to arrest me.
They were now very hostile, and arrogant.
It was then that we demanded to see a warrant of arrest or court order. Tsindi informed that he did not need a warrant of arrest or a court order.
He said he carries out his duties without either of these documents. I enquired from him that he meant that I did not have right as a citizen of this country and as a former Vice-President of Zimbabwe, where they could just come to arrest me as if you were dealing with a piece of wood or any commodity.
He emphasised that he did not need those papers, as a ZACC investigator. That was when we all realized that we were dealing with very dangerous people under the cover of the law.
It was at that point when they were requested to leave the house, because they were not in possession of a warrant of arrest or a court order.
My God is my defense.
MDC Vows To Challenge Police Ban On Byo Demo
By A Correspondent- The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is set to launch an appeal against a prohibition order issued by police in Bulawayo barring the opposition party from staging a demonstration in the city on Monday.
Police banned the demonstration saying it would likely result in “public disorder”.
However, MDC Secretary for Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Kucaca Phulu confirmed to CITE that the party would lodge an appeal at the Magistrate’s Court.
“We have a right to appeal and we are going to file at the Magistrates Court as early as possible. This will also depend on how fast we serve the interested parties such as the Officer Commanding Bulawayo and the Commissioner of Police. We are working on the appeal and want our case to be heard first thing in the morning,” he said.
Phulu noted it was necessary to go to court in order to overturn the ban rather than defy it since MDC believed in rule of law.
“We are committed to the rule of law and to comply with all the requirements set. We can’t ignore the ban. But the way the prohibition was served, it meant to deny us the right to appeal and the High Court issue (filed by four applicants Sunday citing the demo would cause chaos in Bulawayo) was a simple matter of mischief that detained us so we would be unable to appeal,” he said.
Phulu was the lawyer representing the MDC at the High Court.
He also argued that the Public Order and Security Act (POSA), which was used to by police to serve the prohibition order was unconstitutional and had to be modified accordingly.
“This is why we are calling for the law to be aligned to the constitution,” Phulu said.
Part of the reasons given by the police against the demonstration stated: “Ordinary citizens in the country are experiencing hardships so any call for the demonstrations might be taken advantage of by the already agitated citizens and violence may erupt.”
Phulu underlined that the argument by the police was an acknowledgement that people are suffering and already agitated, which was “precisely why people should demonstrate.
“That is the reality and police can’t use it as a reason to stop the demonstration. It is difficult to say people will not demonstrate given the fact they are facing insurmountable hardships. We are yet to see what will happen tomorrow,” he said.\

“Legend Or Villain- The Ball Is In Your Court”: Chamisa Warns ED
By A Correspondent- Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has warned President Emmerson Mnangagwa that time was running out for him to make decisions that will see him remembered as a legend or villain adding that the country was fast approaching a point of no return.
Chamisa said Mnangagwa’s actions would see him in a tight and dangerous corner since the current situation in the country was now way beyond party lines.
Speaking to a local publication on Sunday, the youthful MDC leader said:
“ED is pushing himself in a dangerous corner. He is in his 70s and should make sure that he leaves behind a happy legacy. He must choose whether he wants to be remembered as a legend or a villain.
While 2017 was supposed to be a window for him and his comrades to say we are leaving the past behind and correcting our mistakes, it was a regression.
Now, he is leaving people with little space and that could be a source of discomfort and resistance … which could come from unemployed youths. The next few weeks are going to be decisive for the next generations and my message to Mnangagwa is very simple: I am your man for genuine dialogue … my interest is your interest, and your interest is my interest.
A new dawn can never be impeded. Indeed, nobody has the power to stop that … the sun is rising in Zimbabwe and there will be light very soon.”
Chamisa’s comments come at a time where things have deteriorated economically in Zimbabwe. This has been exasperated by the reintroduction of the infamous Zim Dollar which masses never wanted or were prepared to accept.-DailyNews

“Victory For The People As Bulawayo High Court Application Is Dismissed”
18 August 2019
14.53
The freedom-loving PEOPLE of Zimbabwe in general and the PEOPLE of Bulawayo in particular won resoundingly after the High Court dismissed an urgent application by a Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers Association, the ZANU PF aligned Bulawayo United Residents Association (BURA), Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe, Grain MIllers Association and Davis Muhambi.
The applicants sought to interdict the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and the peace-loving Zimbabweans, under the auspices of the Free Zimbabwe March, from participating in a peaceful demonstration on Monday 19 August 2019.
The applicants, one of whom is a former ZANU PF Bulawayo Provincial Youth League member ground the political axe for ZANU PF.
However, the Judge saw through the applicants’ subterfuge, concealment and trickery and dismissed the court application.
The ruling is not just a victory for constitutional democracy but also a reminder to the rogue regime that the people will eventually get their freedom.
EVENTUALLY THE PEOPLE WILL TRIUMPH.

Stop The Deception, Why Are You Getting Remuneration From Illegitimate Government? Ezra Tshisa Sibanda Asks Opposition MPs
Ezra Tshisa Sibanda
Opposition MPs should the stop deception and double standards.
They still bring up the legitimacy argument at every opportunity yet they remain in Parliament- getting remuneration from the same government which they claim is illegitimate.
I say to them abandon Parliament, resign as Mps and refuse to take any allowances from the Government and let Zanu PF go it alone if indeed you want your boycott to be effective for the world to believe you. You can’t keep ranting about 2018 election outcome yet you know results of those elections wont change no matter what. Its water under the bridge now and its time for a new strategy or else 2023 will come and find your party in a state of confusion.
The late Morgan Tsvangirai(May his soul rest in peace), whenever he called for demos, he would lead people from the front, marching with them, something we dont see in the current opposition leadership. These demos lack strategy and proper organisation.
The approach is disappointingly the same, chaotic and no direction as leaders are never there to give guidance and control their supporters. I find these demos not helpful at all, its only the ordinary people who end up in hospitals nursing injuries or Chikurubi Maximum & Khami Prisons.
I wonder why they always put our people at risk with these meaningless protests which expose them to the ruthless riot police. Its time for all the political parties, the general public, civic society to get together and have a dialogue with the government to save our country from the ecomic doldrums.
Lastly, it has been reported that MDC Mps will shun diplomatic passports yet some of them already have those passports. This has always been the case with the MDCA. They seek good opinion from the public on issues that themselves benefit from.
They unite with ZANU PF MPs in fighting for increases in their allowances, motor vehicles purchases etc. Double standards should stop, they say unpleasant things about the other side only when it suits them, but unite with the same side when it comes to issues that has personal benefit to them as MPs.
Those Mps can fool people sometimes but they cannot fool all the people all the time.

MDC Condemns Prosecution, Conviction Of Chief Ndiweni
The MDC unreservedly condemns the on-going political victimisation and persecution of the outspoken Chief Ndiweni by the increasingly repressive rogue regime.
The MDC stands firmly by the side of Chief Ndiweni and the people of Ntabazinduna against the unjust attack and intimidation by the rogue regime.
Indeed, the MDC as the legitimate people’s movement will do everything in its power; legally, politically and diplomatically to make sure that the outspoken Chief Ndiweni is freed as soon as possible.
The unjust victimisation and persecution of the outspoken Chief Ndiweni has now added yet another justified reason for all the people of Bulawayo to actively join the people’s Free Zimbabwe march on Monday 19th August 2019.
Chief Ndiweni is the Voice of the Voiceless! He is a popular people’s chief, who is clearly now being victimised by the increasingly intolerant rogue regime for speaking the truth to power and also speaking out on behalf of the people.
Like the people of Zimbabwe, Chief Ndiweni must also be set FREE unconditionally.
lndeed, it is clear that under ED, Zimbabwe is NO longer open for freedom, justice or democracy!
Instead, Zimbabwe is now open for despotism and dictatorship!
Zimbabwe is now worse than the colonial regime under Ian Smith that the people of Zimbabwe fought against and finally defeated in April 1980.
The time has now come for the people of Zimbabwe to stand up and fight for their freedom once again.
As such, on Monday, the people of Bulawayo will now be marching for both their own freedom and in solidarity with Chief Ndiweni.

Guardiola Slams VAR Decision
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola was left fuming after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) disallowed a “goal” by Gabriel Jesus against Tottenham Hotspur.
Jesus pounced on a loose ball in the penalty box after Spurs failed to clear a corner deep into stoppage time on Saturday evening.
After consulting VAR, referee Micheal Oliver ruled that City defender, Aymeric Laporte had handled the ball before Jesus scored.
Premier League rules for the 2019/20 season state, “Any goal scored or created with the use of the hand or arm will be disallowed this season even if it is accidental.”
The match ended 2-2 after City scored through a Raheem Sterling header and a Sergio Aguero strike in the first half.
Manchester City’s goals were sandwiched by an Eric Lamela strike from distance. Lucas Moura rose from the bench in the second half to nod in Tottenham’s equalising goal from a Lamela corner.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Guardiola argued that VAR had unfairly disallowed City’s goal, not for the first time.
He said:
I thought we left that situation in Tottenham in the Champions League last season. But it is the same. The referee and VAR disallow it. It’s the second time it’s happened. It’s honestly tough but it’s the way it is.
It happened last week with Wolves (against Leicester) and we saw for Chelsea on Wednesday – the keeper wasn’t on his line – Adrian in the penalty shoot-out. They have to fix it.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was satisfied with VAR’s intervention and insisted that there is a need to accept technology in football.
He said:
I didn’t agree when we started to talk about VAR, but sometimes you get the benefit like today and in the Champions League (last season).
Of course, it is difficult to accept because we love the football from 30 years ago where it was more the decision of the referee – sometimes unfair things happen but at the end of the season we find a good balance.
But we need to accept a different era and technology is in football now. We need to accept that today it is a benefit for us and when it is against us we have to deal with it with patience.Supersport

Gareth Bale To Stay At Real Madrid

BREAKING- MDC’S BULAWAYO DEMO TO BE BANNED PERMANENTLY?
By A Correspondent- Four organisations including the Tafadzwa Musarara led Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ), Denford Mutashu led Confederations of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) and Bulawayo United Residents Association (BURA) have filed an urgent application to Stop the opposition MDC Bulawayo demonstration set for tomorrow permanently.
The organisations sued both the Police and the opposition MDC.
Read part of the relief sought by the organisations in their Urgent High Court application:
“….the first respondent (MDC) is permanently prohibited from carrying out and convening any public demonstration and procession in terms of 1st respondent’s notice dated 8th of August 2019 until such time that the 2nd respondent (ZRP) either imposes the appropriate obligations in terms of Section 26 (6) of the Public Order and Security Act or issues a Prohibition in terms of Section 26 (9) of the Public Order and Security Act.
Details on the reasons of the court action are however not yet clear but it is widely believed to be part of a ploy by the ruling Zanu PF to stop the demonstration from proceeding the same way that this was done for the August 16 demonstrations in Harare Friday.

Democracy Under Siege- MDC Youth Assembly Statement On Abductions, Arrests and Outlawing of Demos
The MDC Youth Assembly notes with serious concern and dismay at the state’s fascist antics to muzzle and stifle citizens rights to demonstrate, freedom of expression and freedom of association.
It is crystal clear that democracy is now under siege from state repressive machinery and belonging to a political party outside ZANU PF is now a criminal offence.
In a space of just more than a year after stealing elections, Emmerson Mnangagwa has swiftly and successfully turned the country into a fully fledged military state where commandeering reign supreme.
The rule of law and the country’s supreme law, the Constitution have been thrown into the pit latrine.
Dambudzo, as Mnangagwa is referred to has successfully debilitated Zimbabwe into a lawlessness society, where guns, baton sticks, teargas, illegal arrests, torture and abductions reign supreme.
The beatings, crushing and subsequent arrests of peaceful demonstrators in Harare on Friday signals the death of democracy and the reincarnation of colonial fascist methods on the shores of our motherland.
Yesterday’s unfortunate events in Bulawayo whereby our party National Chairperson, Thabitha Khumalo and seven others were illegally arrested is a clear testimony and declaration of this regime’s intention to outlaw multiple political party system of modern democracies.
As an Assembly of young social democrats, we condemn Emmerson Mnangagwa’s reign of terror and we have a generational mandate and duty to make sure that the rule of law returns to our doorsteps.
We reiterate our commitment to bring this dictatorship to a screeching halt albeit through non violent methods.
As an Assembly we are not going to watch while Mnangagwa is leading us back to the dark era of the colonial 60s and 70s.
Our demands are clear, genuine and realistic.
Our homes are now houses of hunger where poverty is the only is the only thing that we possess!
We are conscious of where our problems are stemming from, which is the legitimacy question and up until that question is addressed we will not rest nor resign from the streets.

Lawyers Prepare To Appeal Chief Ndiweni Sentencing
The imprisonment of prominent Ntabazinduna traditional leader, Chief Felix Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni, has been described as a “political sham” amid indications that his lawyers are preparing for an appeal.
Ndiweni, who is very vocal against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government, was on Friday jailed 18 months by Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove for malicious damage to property.
Twenty-three villagers that were charged alongside him were only sentenced to 525 hours of community service each.
The chief and his subjects were accused of destroying a fellow villager’s crops.
Former Education minister David Coltart said it was clear that there was political interference in the case where former Home Affairs minister Obert Mpofu and Zanu PF ‘were deeply involved”.
“The prosecution was spurious, the judgement deeply flawed and the sentence utterly ridiculous,” he said.
“ Even if one accepts the deeply flawed State case as fact (which is strenuously denied by Chief Ndiweni), the damage alleged to property is only RTGS$300, namely US$30, for which Chief Ndiweni has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
“There was no evidence that Chief Ndiweni himself damaged the property, but somehow he has been found vicariously guilty.
“This is a profoundly shocking development and the hand of Zanu PF is clearly obvious.”
“The public at the court (on Friday) were deeply angered by the jailing of this honest, decent, compassionate and principled traditional leader, so much so that riot police had to be deployed in case their anger boiled over.”
Mhlonipheki Ncube, the MDC provincial spokesperson in Matabeleland North, said his party would stand by Ndiweni whom he said was being persecuted.
“We are quite aware that this is not aimed at the chief in particular but just to instill fear in the generality of disgruntled people of Matabeleland and the entire nation,” he said.
“We want once again to take this oppotunity to join our president Advocate Nelson Chamisa in calling for the immédiate release of Chief Ndiwani for what they are doing is only adding salt to the wound.”
A day before Ndiweni was sent to jail, he had posted videos on Twitter urging Zimbabweans to join peaceful protests against Mnangagwa’s government. Indications are that his lawyers will file an appeal by tomorrow and also apply for bail.

Violence Is Not Just A Lie, It Is An Evil Expression Of A Total Disregard Of The Rights Of The Poor.
By Brian Tamuka Kagoro- Many people abhor weakness or brokenness of any sort. We live in a world where to some, strength and force are mistakenly fused or seen as interchangeable.
This makes leadership paranoid, inflexible, brittle and extremely weak. It lacks the strength of empathy.
If violence against the poor, weak, vulnerable, hungry or defenceless is done by your friends, condemn it! If the same is done by your enemies condemn it too. Violence is not just a lie, it is an evil expression of a total disregard of the rights of the poor.
I am yet to meet an evil act of State Elites that is not justified by some band of intellectuals, media, church and business people. Include in this holocaust, Rwandan genocide, Gukurahundi, recent massacres in Sudan, CAR, Mali, France, America and Zimbabwe.
When State-sponsored violence does not affect your mother, brother, sister, father, wife, cousin or friend it seems both remote and justified. You argue that the victims deserved it ‘what were they doing in the first place?’Grief has no permanent address!
Justice? Injustice? Kuruneri and Makamba were charged with invented crimes; Mai Mujuru was framed; ED border jumped to escape; Chombo in Chains; Kudzai Chipanga arrested; Kasukuwere charged for border jumping and Mupfumira for corruption? Zvibate, your day beckons.
When violence becomes our stock-in-trade and consistent mode of operation, we unwittingly turn society into a field of thugs and thuggery. We teach the young that the only way to be heard and respected is by using greater force than the next person. In this we err.
Do justice, Love mercy and be kind, especially to the poor, the needy and oppressed. Speak out on behalf of the voiceless ( or those whose voice has been muted by the terror of the powerful and wealthy). This is true religion!
Peace-loving does not mean starving in silence (and now darkness too, since there is no electricity). Mwana asingacheme anofira mumbereko! It is the duty of citizens to point out when leadership no longer serves their rights, interests and legitimate expectations.
This new ‘Christianity’ that prefers, favours and prioritizes hob-knobbing with the rich and powerful ignores Proverbs 31:8-10 that says:
“Speak out on behalf of the voiceless, and for the rights of all who are vulnerable….. defend the needy and the poor”.
FULL TEXT- Teachers Postpone “Pay Day Funeral” Commemoration
The Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has resolved to postpone our Pay Day Funeral from 19 August to 23 August 2019.
This is in the wake of the Zimbabwe regime’s relentless brutal crackdown of innocent men, women and the youth of our beloved motherland – before, during and after the 16 August 2019 demonstrations – whose only ‘crime’ was a peaceful and constitutional desire for prosperity and freedom.
Such a shameful and brazenly callous response by the regime to the genuine cries and aspirations by the suffering masses of Zimbabwe, further exposes the heartless nature of those who are supposed to be our leaders and employers, thereby highlighting the urgent need for us all not to falter in our struggle for a better life, but instead to put on the whole armour of boldness and fearlessness in our quest for a dignified livelihood worthy of any human being.
The PayDay Funeral is just but one of the peaceful and constitutional instruments in our vast toolbox of options that ARTUZ has seen appropriate in urging our employers (the government of Zimbabwe) to finally award the plight of the long-suffering teachers the seriousness it deserves.
It is with shame that we have to resort to pressure our government to consider teachers as an integral part of any vision to develop the living standards of the people of Zimbabwe – as there can never be any knowledge without the teacher, and there can never be any economic prosperity without knowledge. Something that should have seemed obvious to any government with genuine intent on improving the livelihood of the people.
However, we find ourselves having to engage in never-ending struggles for teachers to finally receive recognition and appreciation that they deserve – and we urge all peace-loving progressive and caring Zimbabweans to unite in solidarity on 23 August 2019 as we mourn our meagre salaries, as our government further exposes its wanton disregard for our welfare and the survival of our families – thereby, betraying its general contempt for the people of this country.
Teachers merely demand a living wage in this age of of the ever-escalating cost of living.
A nation without a teacher is a nation without a future!

No Leniency For ZESA Over ESKOM Debt Payment
By A Correspondent- South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, has set tough conditions for ZESA following an agreement of a payment plan between the two power utilities.
Under the agreement, Zimbabwe committed to making weekly payments of US$890 000 to service the US$33 million debt and also undertook to submit weekly reports on this arrangement.
No leniency will be accorded Zimbabwe since under the deal, failure to make payments on the part of Zimbabwe, even if the delay is by a single day, will result in Eskom immediately calling in the guarantee.
According to Business Times, the power supply agreement is backed by a US$15 million guarantee from a regional bank.
Reports claim that some officials within Eskom were not willing to extend grace to Zimbabwe arguing that the power utility, which recently reported a billion-dollar loss, was crippled.
An official familiar with the developments told the publication that the negotiations were not easy.
The official is quoted as saying:
Negotiations between Eskom and Zesa were not easy given Zimbabwe’s record in servicing debts.
Zimbabwe has to adhere to several conditions to keep this arrangement active. Eskom has made it clear that it will not hesitate to switch off Zesa if it fails to effect its payments.-BusinessTimes
SADC CSOs Delegation From Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa Detained, Interrogated At 39th SADC Summit
By A Correspondent- Tanzania’s security agents detained and interrogated members of the SADC Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The 48 activists drawn for the SADC countries were participants for the 39th SADC Summit hosted by Tanzania.
A statement released by the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition reads in part:
About 48 participants to the 39th SADC summit, some of them being members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa are under interrogation by security agencies.
Some of them started being interrogated yesterday, 16th August 2019, while others (37) were to be interrogated this morning, 17 August 2019.
Some of them had their accommodations searched midnight today in the hotels where they were sleeping in Dar es Salaam.
… We urge security officers to free these rights defenders/CSOs because continuing to hold them will paint a bad image to the nation.
We also urge the Tanzanian police force to speed up their investigation/interrogation and allow the delegates to participate in the ongoing meetings or any planned activity.
To do otherwise would be interpreted as efforts to obstruct these delegates from engaging fully in SADC meetings and other activities planned for today which will eventually distort the image of the country.

Gvnt To Revoke Domant Independent Power Producers’ Licences
By A Correspondent- The government, through the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), will soon revoke the licences given to some Independent Power Producers (IPPs) who have failed to operate.
38 solar projects are non-operational, having a total capacity of 1280 megawatts (MW). These licences are now in the spotlight. Energy and Power Development minister Fortune Chasi had this to say:
We will soon be looking at dormant licenses and revoking them for non-performance. We want to do away with speculative behaviour.
Some license holders paid close to nothing for the licenses and now want to sell them for a fortune that is not acceptable.
IPPs [independent power producers] should have a clear timeline as to when they expect to start production.
There are 38 non-operational projects with a total capacity of 1280.24MW. The capacities of the solar plants range from 0,19MW SAZ plant to the 175MW Sinogy Power solar plant.
According to a Business Times report, ZERA has issued at least 77 power generation licences.
The report says:
As of July 31, 2019, ZERA issued more than 77 power generation licences and 70 of these are IPPs with 42 for solar power projects.
The total capacity of licensed solar projects is about 1285MW and this includes 5,5MW from operational projects and about 1280MW from projects under development.
Government has also licensed four operational biomass projects with a total capacity of 92.8MW, comprised of 3 Bagasse/Thermal projects and 1 Wood waste project which mostly generate power for own use, however excess power is banked in the ZESA grid.
In addition to this, there is a total of six licensed coal projects which are under development with a total capacity is 4560MW.
These include the PER group venture with a capacity of 2000MW in Binga and the China Africa Sunlight Energy project with a capacity of 600MW in Gwayi.

Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown” Said Welshman Ncube – Meant “Empty Is MDC Head Aspiring To Wear The Crown!”
By Patrick Guramatunhu- “MDC Vice President Professor Welshman says the recent developments in the country have made him understand the being a leader of the opposition MDC is like a heavy crown.”
Writing on Twitter from Tanzania Prof Ncube said, “As I lay sleepless and pondered the events of yesterday including the political incarceration of Chief Ndiweni and as I rewatched President Chamisa’s press conference flanked by Cdes Biti and Karenyi I finally understood the essence of: Heavy is the head that wears the crown.”
Professor, we know that it is only the crown that you and your fellow MDC leaders care about. You do not give a damn about implementing the democratic reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections that the nation has been dying for.
Zimbabweans have risked life and limb to elect MDC leaders into power on the understanding the party will implement the reforms. What reform have you lot implemented in your 20 years in politics!
When you did get into power in the 2008 to 2013 GNU you lot failed to implement even one reform. “We sat, ate and did nothing for five years!” admitted Chamisa recently.
MDC is dragging the nation into these demos for the single purpose of getting Mnangagwa to appoint Chamisa, Biti, yourself and a few others ministers in a power sharing National Transition Authority (NTA).
You know as well as I do (sadly the majority of Zimbabweans out there are naïve and gullible and know nothing) that the NTA will accomplish nothing of substance. It is just a chance for the MDC leaders to get back on the gravy train to “sit, eat and do nothing!”
Zanu PF rigged last year’s elections, the regime is illegitimate and should be forced to step down and an interim administration appointed to finally implement the reforms MDC leaders failed to implement during the last GNU.
MDC leaders have kept the illegitimate Zanu PF regime in office by giving the regime some modicum of legitimacy by participating in the flawed and illegal elections. And now the party is offering to fully endorse Mnangagwa as legitimate if he agrees to share with MDC the spoils of the rigged elections.
History will record that Zimbabwe would have implemented the democratic reforms and ended the Zanu PF dictatorship many, many moons ago if only MDC leaders had not turned out to be some of the most corrupt and incompetent politicians in human history. It beggars belief that these MDC village idiots are still Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, still aspiring to rule the country.
As much as Zimbabweans are desperate to see the back of this Zanu PF dictatorship they must wake-up to the reality that MDC leaders are not going to help the nation implement the reforms necessary to dismantle and end the Zanu PF dictatorship. Indeed, the last ten years, ever since the 2008 GNU, MDC leaders have been running with the hare and hunting with the hounds.
Zimbabweans must now forsake the binary mentality of seeing the country ruled by either Zanu PF or MDC; both the two parties have proven to be corrupt, incompetent and utterly useless. The proposed NTA is a waste of time and opportunity.
We must now think outside the box, we cannot remove the corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF regime from power only to replace it with the equally corrupt and incompetent MDC empty heads.
“Heavy is the head that wears the crown!” said Professor Ncube. What he meant was “Empty is the MDC head aspiring to wear the crown!”
Both Chamisa, ED Must Drop Legitimacy Issue: Coltart
Jane Mlambo| Opposition MDC Treasurer General, David Coltart has told President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his opponent Nelson Chamisa to close the letimacy chapter to allow the country to move forward.
In an exclusive interview with Alpha Media Holdings owner Trevor Ncube, Coltart said if both Mnangagwa and Chamisa stand on their respective positions, it is going to be difficult for dialogue to pursue.
“I think both leaders have to park that issue. In other words Emmerson Mnangagwa mustn’t be insisting that he be recognised. Nelson Chamisa must say ok, I dispute that, but I am gonna park this issue for National interest so that we can get to the substantive issue. Because if both stand on their respective positions, its gonna be difficult for dialogue to pursue,” said Coltart.
Chamisa Off Globe-Trotting To Be Declared Winner Of 2018 – If One Leader Does, Will Eat My Hat
By Nomusa Garikai- “Hupenzi inyama yegakava!” (There is no one more stubborn than a village idiot!) so goes the Shona maxim. The MDC leaders are village idiots and they are very stubborn too.
“On the 31st of July 2018, Zimbabweans overwhelmingly voted for President Nelson Chamisa. That election was stolen in broad daylight and since then, the crisis of legitimacy has manifested itself through multi-layered challenges that have manifested themselves through power outages, water and fuel shortages, indecent wages, high prices and the erosion of the people’s dignity, among other challenges,” said the MDC statement at the start of the ongoing public demonstration to force Mnangagwa to step down in favour of Nelson Chamisa.
We now hear that Chamisa is setting off seek international community support that he should be declared the winner of last’s elections.
“The [MDC] president is open and has plans to travel to major international centers, including Moscow and Beijing, some capitals in Europe and the West just to highlight the extent of the problem in terms of how the problem is man-made and how the problem is costing millions of lives and has threatened food security for millions of people,” said Dr Nkululeko Sibanda, Chamisa’s spokesperson.
Many people have explained to MDC leaders that the party’s half-way house position regarding last year’s elections is a lead balloon that will never fly. The one camp comprising the EU, Americans, Commonwealth and many others have totally rejected the election process and results as a farced. “The electoral commission lacked full independence and appeared to not always act in an impartial manner,” stated the EU Election Mission final report.
“The final results as announced by the Electoral Commission contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability. Finally, the restrictions on political freedoms, the excessive use of force by security forces and abuses of human rights in the post-election period undermined the corresponding positive aspects during the pre-election campaign. As such, many aspects of the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe failed to meet international standards.”
So, anyone in Europe, America, etc. would once again ask MDC to produce the verified voters roll, all the V11 forms (summary of the vote count at each polling station), etc. ZEC and MDC failed to produce any of these key documents last year and hence the talk of failing to verify and trace results in the EU report quoted above.
The Chinese, Russians, SADC, AU and many others have accepted the election process as free, fair and credible. Whilst they accept the possibility of the individual presidential result being wrong, they accept that the Constitutional Court was competent to decide on than dispute. They reject Chamisa’s questioning of the Constitutional Court’s integrity when he failed to do the same with ZEC, the Court’s sister judiciary body.
So, either camp in the rigged election debate will find Chamisa guilty of cherry picking and therefore would never want to support him. No one is going to stop Chamisa visiting China, Russian, Europe he has visited a number of African countries already but he can be certain that no nation or organisation worth the spit will even endorse his claim as the winner of last year’s elections.
Indeed, as far as many countries in the West are concerned Chamisa and his MDC friends lost political credibility by participating in such blatantly fraudulent elections. For MDC to still claim to have won the elections after the party had seen the damning reports of the elections from the EU, Americans, Commonwealth and many others goes to show just how naïve and foolish the MDC leaders are!
Chamisa is off on a globe-trotting tour to drum up support to be declared winner of the 2018 presidential race. I will eat my hat if any national leader of note ever support such nonsense!
Coltart Tells ED, Chamisa To Drop Hardline Stance
MDC treasurer general David Coltart has said there is need for both President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the opposition party’s leader Nelson Chamisa to drop their hardline positions if genuine dialogue about the country’s political crisis is to take off.
Mnangagwa last week rejected Chamisa’s demands for a neutral mediator to help broker dialogue over last year’s disputed elections.
Coltart told Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor that the two should park their tough demands if there was to be any dialogue.
“I think both leaders have to park that issue. In other words, Emmerson Mnangagwa mustn’t be insisting that he be recognised,” he said.
“Nelson Chamisa must say okay, I dispute that, but I am going to park this issue for the national interest so that we can get to the substantive issue because if both stand on their respective positions, it’s going to be difficult for dialogue to be pursued.”
Coltart said the new MDC leadership was committed to helping Zimbabwe solve its problems.
“So what the public needs to understand is that there is a consensus that we are committed to stabilising the country and to take the country through meaningful dialogue,” he said. “What we believe though is that the playing field is uneven at present. We think — and I think justifiably — there are two dominant political parties in the country and two dominant political leaders, Nelson Chamisa and Emmerson Mnangagwa, and this is borne out of the election results.”
He said the dialogue must be primarily between the MDC and Zanu FP based on the outcome of last year’s elections.

By-election Results Prove Zanu PF’s Increasing Popularity:How Reliable Is ZEC Survey?
ZANU-PF has polled a total of 25 597 votes to the MDC Alliance’s 11 369 in all by-elections held since last year’s harmonised elections, a Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has survey revealed.
The figures show that around 60 percent of the voters, since last year’s general elections, have voted for the ruling party.
A schedule of statistics availed by ZEC to The Sunday Mail shows that the revolutionary party has remained the political party of choice for voters.
This is in sharp contrast to the MDC Alliance which has consistently failed to prove its mettle in the ballot box, despite claiming to have popular support.
According to ZEC; “The Commission has presently conducted a total of 14 by-elections (being) two National Assembly constituency elections and
12 Local Authorities by-elections since the July 2018 Harmonised elections.”
Since last year’s polls, ZEC has conducted two National Assembly by-elections in Mutoko North and Lupane, which were both won by Zanu-PF.
In Mutoko, Zanu-PF candidate Rambidzai Nyabote trounced the MDC A after polling 11 141 votes compared to Bonface Mushore’s 1 329.
In the last by-election held in Lupane, Mbongeni Dube of Zanu-PF polled 6 396 against the MDC’s Dalumazi Khumalo who amassed 4 505 votes.
Zanu-PF also won nine out of the 12 local authority elections held in Chimanimani, Chegutu, Chtiungwiza, Beitbridge, Matobo, Bulawayo, Mutasa, Kadoma, Nyanga, Bikita Lupane, Nkayi and Bubi.
Of the 12 by-elections, the Nelson Chamisa’s MDC only won in Kadoma, Mutasa and Chitungwiza.
The by-elections show a trend in which Zanu-PF has gained ground in areas that the opposition used to dominate.State media

26 Activists Remanded In Custody
Twenty-six suspects who were arrested on Friday for participating in an illegal demonstration organised by the MDC Alliance were yesterday remanded in custody to tomorrow for bail application.
The gang of 25 men and one woman were arrested for various offences arising from the illegal demonstration which the police had earlier prohibited.

Join POLAD, NPF Leader Tells Chamisa
A senior National Patriotic Front (NPF) official has chided MDC leader Nelson Chamisa for refusing to accept President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s legitimacy.
NPF vice president, Welcome Shumba told NewZimbabwe.com that Chamisa unwittingly endorsed Mnangagwa’s Presidency when he approached the Constitutional Court in August last year.
Shumba, who is infamous for openly boasting that he was enjoying the good things by participating in the ongoing State House dialogue, said, “This issue legitimacy is a closed chapter some might want to see how Chamisa was the first person to legitimise Cde ED Mnangagwa by trusting in the judiciary in the country.
“That means he had trust in any outcome of the court process, so he went to court, trusting in our judiciary system and the outcome was there for everyone to see.
“The President was declared the winner. So in terms of legitimacy, I think that is a closed chapter. I wonder how he is demonstrating, raising that issue.
“If he has got any issues, he must come to the political parties dialogue and we talk about them and move forward.”
Shumba urged Chamisa to join the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD), a dialogue platform initiated by President Mnangagwa.

Victims of Friday Demonstrations Handed To Zanu PF Youths: Human Rights Group
Jane Mlambo| A local human rights lobby group Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has claimed that the opposition activists who were arrested on Friday during demonstrations in Harare were handed over to Zanu PF youths who tortured them amid fears some are still missing.
Others are feared to have been disappeared,” said the organisation.

OPINION: Mnangagwa Maneuvering Himself Out Of A Potential Coup
By Tererayi Rushwaya|The scarf wearer has been behaving a little more jittery than usual lately. For me the notion that there is an impending coup in Zimbabwe grew legs when I heard that notorious audio in which Mnangagwa’s wife was giving ear aggro to some spook from the military over the phone. In this audio, sandwiched between bursts of incomprehensible ranting by the ‘first lady’, she did accuse the guy on the other side of the line that he was part of a cabal in the military that wants to remove her husband from power. I had reservations about the audio, actually I still do.
Anyway, later on someone on twitter pointed out that Mnangagwa was wearing what looks like a bulletproof vest at some engagement. Then at the Heroes Acre event, his security was more amped up than ever before, there were drones flying over the stadium and his bodyguards were ominously carrying massive cases. I don’t know about you, but those big cases certainly weren’t housing his spare scarfs; those were cases for machine guns. Now why the hell would bodyguards of the ‘president’ carry machine guns at an event in Harare where there are hundreds of soldiers? Who would take a shot at him? Certainly not the supine crowds who attend these ghastly events; certainly not the general Zimbabwean public who hold zero threat on the president’s life. The only people who have the guts and tools to have a pop at Mnangagwa’s are the people in uniform. Which is why I think all this extra vigilance, that mad woman on the audio, demonstrate that there is distrust between the scarf wearer and a group in the army, not only that but there is probably a coup in the works.
Is this why Mnangagwa banned the demo on the 16th?
Possibly. The spectacle of disgruntled crowds in the streets would give any coup plotters the perfect opportunity to make a move on Mnangagwa and this is probably why he is hell bent on stopping these demos especially in the capital city. This maybe a case of another cornered goblin trying to manoeuvre himself out of a coup. Therefore, I expect any scheduled demos to be cancelled by the ‘police’ coupled with a crackdown on organisers and MDC leadership which had already started with the arrest of Tabitha Khumalo and others.
Sadly, the alternative view is not as elaborate. Thwarting demos, beating up civilians and a dictator cranking up his security is part and parcel of a military dictatorship. We have seen it often enough, it has become worse because this time it is Satan himself on the throne not his puppet demon.
Those who read my blog will know that I believe that the only way to remove this military junta is via a progressive coup that is supported by the opposition and public. I know some people will say isn’t this what happened in November 2017? The answer is a big NO. There was nothing progress about that coup, it was a regressive coup, the opposite of progressive. Why so? Because it was a coup that resulted in the ascension of Satan himself. People forgot that this is the man who has been at the centre of every government scandal, corruption and citizen repression since 1980 – a ruthless man, Mugabe’s chief henchman.
What I mean by progressive coup is that the people who remove the junta would be closer in ideology with the MDC or democracy and functionality; they would be people in the army fed up with the corruption and repression of citizens. I know it’s a tough one to imagine. Anyway, after this progressive coup there would be the creation of a transitional government which has the MDC right at the centre, while a new constitution is drafted which removes the position of President replacing it with Prime Minister and radical changes in the way the army and police are commanded, with a new republic army being created. Most importantly the provision that the government of Zimbabwe is run forthwith by a coalition not by a single majority party for the next 25 years so that the country focuses on recovery. I explain this in a lot more detail in my upcoming book.
ZACC Denied Entry To Mupfumira’s Prison Cells, Is She Even At Chikurubi Maximum?
By A Correspondent| Officials from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), on Saturday, visited Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison to investigate claims that former Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Priscah Mupfumira is getting preferential treatment.
Jessie Majome, Frank Muchengwa and Kuziva Murapa requested to visit the prison cells, according to Mupfumira’s lawyer, Charles Chinyama.
He said:
I confirm the presence at Chikurubi Female Prison of two commissioners known to me from Zacc this afternoon.
They indicated that their intention was to investigate whether my client was being given preferential treatment ahead of other female prisoners, but after talking to them, they drove off.
Majome said that they were blocked from visiting the cells and told to write a letter in advance requesting access to the institution.
Said Majome:
“We could not access it and were advised to write a letter so that we can fully assess the circumstances under which she is living generally.
We are concerned about the reports from the media (of preferential treatment) and we have an obligation to investigate.”
Mupfumira was arrested in July at the instigation of the corruption watchdog on allegations of defrauding the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) of more than US$100 million.
She has been denied bail twice, the latest being this past Friday.- Standard
Heavily Armed Police Besiege Bulawayo
Heavily armed police and Army jet besiege Bulawayo.
Bulawayo residents on Saturday woke up to a free terrifying drama featuring members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police who conducted a roadshow all over the city telling people not to participate in the demonstrations called by the opposition MDC on Monday.
An eye witness who spoke to this reporter said, “The police were driving through town in tankers and armoured vehicles telling the citizens that they must demonstrate and must ignore whoever tells them to participate in violent acts.
“They said people of Bulawayo are known for Ubuntu and they must go about in their normal business. An army helicopter spent the greater part of the morning flying all over the city.” People of Bulawayo have vowed to take to the streets on Monday to register their concerns on the issues happening in the city.
Some pro-Mthwakazi restoration activists have started distributing flyers calling for a shutdown on Monday over the incarceration of Nhlambabaloyi Chief Felix Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni.

Sikhala Blasts “Illegitimate ED” Over Tabitha Khumalo Arrest
It is without shock to receive the news that my boss Hon Thabitha Khumalo, the National Chairperson of our party has been arrested for allegedly contravening Section 31(b) ii(A) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.
The offense insinuates that an accused person should have deliberately spread falsehoods knowing that he or she knows it to be false.
I don’t care about the stupid charge, but want to bring it to everyone attention both locally and abroad that the MDC leadership is under serious siege from the fascist, illegitimate regime of Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Since the formation of the MDC in 1999, at no point in its history has it had its leadership under attack than what it faces today. The illegitimate regime of Emmerson Mnangagwa has taken joy in hounding the leadership of the party.
Spurious and stupid charges are preferred against almost everyone in the party, the latest being the one preferred against our National Chairperson.
It is now clear that illegitimate Emmerson Mnangagwa wants to kill, squeeze and destroy all the democratic space for Zimbabweans. What hounds him is his illegitimacy.
He knows well deep down his heart that he did not win the elections. He is on a crusade to force himself upon the people of Zimbabwe, which we must all reject in unison.
The illegitimate fascist leader underestimates the resolve among the people of Zimbabwe and the MDC leadership to weather his oppression.
Hon Thabitha Khumalo is a strong woman. She will neither be intimidated or cowed by the shenanigans of a desperate despot.
No amount of arrests or intimidation will stop us from demanding our stolen victory. Free Thabitha Khumalo now.

They Were Not Police Officers But ZANU PF Youth

Agencies|Some social media users have distanced the Zimbabwe Republic Police from Friday’s violent scenes that were witnessed in the streets of Harare. They said that the conduct and combat some of the purported police officers were wearing raise serious questions about their real identity.
Prior to the demonstrations, there were reports suggesting that the army was being trained for deployment as police officers during demonstrations. Whether it is true or not, we cannot tell.
Hopewell Chin’ono, a Harvard trained journalist had to say:
These police officers, if they are that at all, are extremely unprofessional & the evidence lies before us to see. They were using ropes to beat up protesters, yet the Monthlante commission reminded the Government of the need to retrain the police force.
Are these real policemen?
There is a need for the progressive organizations in Zimbabawe to investigate whether there is now a conflation between the army and the police force. Are we now seeing soldiers dressed in police uniforms sent to inflict pain through disproportionate violence on protesters?
During the January military crackdown on civilians, authorities denied deploying the army saying that there were some people who stole military regalia and used it to commit crimes. Some cases are still pending in court.
Authorities also argued that if they were indeed soldiers, they were just rogue soldiers not operating under the command of their bosses. The government also denied deploying soldiers who fired live ammunition on civilians on August 1 2018. They argued that there must have been snipers who were shooting at the people.
Arrested Peaceful Protestors Appear In Court, Remanded In Custody
By A Correspondent- Twenty-six suspects who were arrested on Friday for participating in a peaceful demonstration organised by the MDC Alliance were on Saturday remanded in custody to Monday for bail application.
At least 25 men and one woman were arrested for various offences arising from the peaceful demonstration which the police had earlier prohibited.
Initially 91 people were arrested, however, some were released after paying fines.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not ascertain the number of people who had been released.
“I am no longer in the office at the moment. I cannot ascertain the number of people who have been fined and those who have appeared in court,” he said
“I will, however, be able to give you the figures tomorrow morning.”
Through their lawyer Jeremiah Bhamu, the protestors on Saturday appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Richard Ramaboea.
Prosecutor Mr George Manokore requested that the accused be remanded in custody until Monday pending further investigations into the case.
MDC-A the made an urgent High Court application seeking to challenge the police decision, but the bid hit a brick wall after Justice Joseph Musakwa dismissed it and upheld the prohibition.
MDC- Alliance activists, however, went on to gather at Africa Unity Square in defiance of the court ruling.
The police also say some of the youths went on to engage in confrontational acts which included threats, intimidation and disruption of the smooth flow of traffic in the Central Business District.
The police moved in and dispersed the unlawful gathering, arresting some of the suspects in the process. Others were arrested for various offences linked to the demonstration in Chitungwiza and Harare South.
In a statement the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services said no one died during the demonstrations, while two people were injured.-StateMedia

Mphoko Demands For Mnangagwa’s Arrest First Before He Is Arrested
EMBATTLED former State Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko has challenged the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to arrest incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa and former president Robert Mugabe, saying the two were also part of the presidency which allegedly abused power, the same allegations Mphoko is facing.
ZACC investigating officers on Friday visited Mphoko at his residence in Bulawayo to question him over his alleged release of former Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) acting chief executive officer, Moses Juma from police custody following the latter’s arrest for criminal abuse of office in 2016.
In response, Mphoko argued he was not acting alone at the time.
“The presidency is an institution. In that case, it was President Mugabe, myself and ED (Mnangagwa),” Mphoko told the ZACC officers in a video image posted on social media by his daughter.
“There were people who were coming to us to inform us of what was happening, requesting the intervention of the presidency.”
Mphoko said some cases were referred to Mnangagwa while some were directed to him by Mugabe.
“In situations of that nature, there were some cases which were referred to me, some cases handled by ED,” said Mphoko.
The former vice president cited the Maleme Ranch Farm saga in Matobo as one of the cases which he handled as a special presidium assignment.
In the particular case, Mphoko intervened in a dispute involving a white commercial farmer, Peter Cunningham and a CIO officer Rodney Mashingaidze.
Mashingaidze’s illegal take-over of Maleme ranch had triggered protests from locals who were benefitting from Cunningham’s generosity.
Mphoko ordered Mashingaidze out of the farm.
He also told the ZACC investigators he was not a corrupt person as alleged.
“I never stole anything from anybody. I have a record of being generous together with my family. If at all there is anything I could have taken from people, there is nothing like that,” he said.
Govt And Civil Servants In Fresh Salary Increase Discussions

GOVERNMENT will this week bring its employees under the auspices of the Apex council to the negotiating table to discuss the August to December cost of living adjustments.
This comes after Government last month awarded the civil servants a once off $400 cushioning allowance.
Discussions have now begun on the cost of living adjustment which will further cushion civil servants from economic vagaries for the remaining five months.
Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Dr Sekai Nzenza said the two parties were set to meet early this week to resume talks on the negotiations.
“As soon as we get a mandate from the Treasury on the allocation from the supplementary budget, we will convene,” she said.
“We are most definitely going to have it (the meeting).
“Government will not revert on its obligation with the cost of living adjustment set to be effective from the August 1.“We will not revert from our previous agreement.”
Apex Council deputy chairperson Mr David Dzatsunga said the council was ready to begin negotiations with Government over the issue.
“We have been very clear with Government on our position which we would want fulfilled,” Mr Dzatsunga said.
“We want the Government to multiply our October 2018 salaries by the current prevailing interbank market rate.”
Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA) general secretary Mr Tapson Sibanda said they were now waiting for the meeting.
“We now await for another round of talks with Government to negotiate for August to December cost of living adjustment. We expect the Government not to award us not less than $4 600 as demanded earlier,” he said.
Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube recently said all civil servants will get their bonuses for the year in November.
In March civil servants received a salary increase of $400 million as part of their cost of living adjustment, with the Government promising another review of salaries in July this year.
Under this deal, a civil servant who was earning $441 is now getting $570, while those who were earning $519 saw their salaries rising to $649.
The salary increases ranged from 13 percent to 25 percent, depending on grade.
Last month, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Dr Sekai Nzenza said the Government was working on introducing non-monetary incentives for its employees such as housing, transport and medical insurance.
Recently, civil servants got the green light to import vehicles duty-free as part of non-monetary incentives.
In addition, a $60 million housing facility was unveiled.
