Tino Chinyoka

By Farai D Hove| One of Emmerson Mnangagwa’s lawyers on the Aug 2018 concourt challenge, who assaulted human rights lawyer, Brian Dube inside the Gweru magistrates court yesterday has spoken.

Writing soon after the incident, Tinomudaishe Chinyoka said,

“I was arrested today. Brian Dube and Jeremiah Bamu concocted a false assault charge against me to secure my arrest and removal from Court.

“Instead of representing their client, they are busy lying and consorting with mobs to assault lawyers and witnesses. Hearing Friday maybe.”

Robbers In Army Uniforms Arrested

FOUR suspected armed robbers who allegedly targeted businesses in Harare, Chegutu and Chinhoyi and made off with more than $200 000 cash, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with armed robbery.

Musarurwa Chikwari, Calvin Gasura, Tinashe and Cried Munhangu appeared before magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa, who remanded them in custody to March 4.

Allegations are that in August last year, the quartet, in the company of other unnamed accomplices, who are still at large, went on a robbery spree while clad in military uniform.

On August 23, they approached Brenda Chidyamagwiri, a cashier at Obrim Bricks, and ordered her to lie down as they fired into the air using AK-47 assault rifles.

The accused allegedly stole a safe containing US$50 000, $20 000 in bond notes, mobile phones, knife-proof jackets and CCTV servers.

They allegedly ransacked other rooms and stole $2 000 and mobile phones. The value of goods and cash stolen was $74 000 and nothing was recovered.

Using the same modus operandi, they allegedly stole $21 800 from Fake Dealers Wholesale in Chitungwiza, US$29 000 from M and J shop, R10 000 from foreign currency dealer Tafadzwa Magariro, $3 500 from Moors soccer shop and $1 125 from Africa Bet ($1 125). Nothing was recovered.

In opposing bail, the State claimed that the accused were likely to interfere with witnesses and that the weapons used in the commission of the offences were yet to be recovered.

Sebastian Mutizirwa appeared for the State.

Club Sankanyi Shut Down

CONTROVERSIAL businessman and socialite Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure is set to shut down his upmarket glass-structured nightclub — Club Sankayi located along Kwame Nkrumah in Harare barely a year after it opened its doors to the public.

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, Ginimbi confirmed that the joint will shut down on March 3 for renovations to give patrons better standards.

“We at Club Sankayi believe in coming up with top notch and out of the box standards for our patrons, so we will be closing down the nightclub on March 3 for some time to make time for a massive face-lift,” he said.

“The renovation process will see a new and more interesting face of Club Sankayi. Fans and stakeholders should brace themselves for a new lease of showbiz life at Club Sankayi as we outline our 2019 showbiz vision.”

The socialite said the new additions through the renovations will not change the club’s theme and philosophy which he described as the big spenders’ rendezvous.

“I am currently on the market trying to get something new for the club, the new face that we will unleash will not jeopardise the theme and the idea of Club Sankayi which is making and maintaining it as the ‘big spenders’ rendezvous,” he said.

“The club will always be the big boys’ playground, we want to maintain class and standards. Club Sankayi should and will be ranked amongst the top and must-go clubs in the continent.”

Club Sankayi, known for selling expensive social lubricants, has hosted top class acts and top notch events.

The Congolese rhumba superstar Fally Ipupa was the first top artist to perform at the club in May last year, followed by South African wheel spinner and music producer and DJ Zihle, among others.

Battlefields Mine Disaster Victims Named, Four Miners Still Missing

Government has released the names of the 24 miners who perished in the Battlefields disaster as search efforts continue to account for at least four others reportedly trapped in another shaft.

This comes as search teams have indicated that there may not be any more miners than the 32 already accounted for in the remaining shaft at Jongwe Cooperative Mine contrary to earlier estimates that put the number at over 50.

Police released the names of the deceased as Thulani Sibanda (18) of Mbizo, Kwekwe, John Mufakose (29) of Gore village, Gokwe, Norman Billion (39) of Kadoma, Andrew Mharadze (26) of Mharadze village, Gokwe, Tinashe Shanda (22) of Mashinyira village, Gokwe, Givemore Munyengeri (42) of Plot 22 Silvermoon, Battlefields, Trynos Zindonye (31) of Hamandishe village, Gokwe, Clever Takaendesa (47) of Shurugwi, Tafadzwa Mubaiwa (22) Gonde village, Gokwe, Tinei Tembo (31) Plot 47 Silvermoon, Battlefields, Charles Jacob (25) of Jacopo village, Murehwa and David Martin (38) of Kadoma.

Others include Jabulani Moyo of Village 12A Donnain, Battlefields, Josias Muzadzi (45) of village, Zhombe, Liberty Koke (26) of Village 9A, Gokwe, Augustine Chindoza (39) Chizembo Village, Bikita, Wellington Kwari of Whaley Range Etina Mine, Kadoma, Takanda Mushore (27), Kwekwe, Tobias Takaendesa, Kadoma, Winston Muziribo (22) of Makombe Village, Gokwe, Mayana Bvunzawabaya (27) Gore Village, Gokwe, Misheck Ncube (30) Kapoto Village, Mudzi, Keith Muderedzi (31) Village 10, Kadoma and Eborn Kaseke (24) Matarutse of Marondera.

The 24 were trapped when the shafts they were working were flooded by water following a heavy storm on Tuesday last week.

This comes as Government has indicated that it was winding up search operations at Jongwe Cooperative Mine in Battlefields where eight miners were found alive and 24 bodies were recovered.

Operations have been shifted to Cricket Number 3 Mine where water levels are still high and the shaft is reportedly deeper.

At least four miners are reportedly trapped underground in the shaft which was the first to be flooded before the seven other shafts.

Government has managed to match the names of 32 miners on the register and those rescued alive and bodies retrieved.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister July Moyo toured Jongwe and Cricket Number 3 Cooperative mines where he gave Government’s assurance to relatives that effort would continue until every missing person has been accounted for.

“We are here to say to the relatives of the victims that do not lose hope because Government has committed itself through the declaration by President Mnangagwa of a State of Disaster and we will support the search effort to the end,” said Minister Moyo.

“We will continue to visit you. Tomorrow (today) we are going to brief the President at Cabinet and we want to do it from an informed position.”

Indications are that search teams have combed all work stations underground in the last shaft and have concluded that chances of finding more bodies were slim.

Minister Moyo dispelled claims that Government reacted slowly to manage the disaster saying such claims emanated from failure to understand the structure of Government.

“Whenever there is a disaster of this magnitude the President calls for a state of emergence or state of disaster.

“The arms of Government’s Civil Protection Unit led by the district administrator including the police at local level are activated. Government’s involvement does not start when the minister arrives at the scene,” said Minister Moyo.

“There are four bodies said to be trapped underground and we want to assure everyone that all Government departments will not leave until all bodies have been rescued or retrieved.”

He said Government’s disaster preparedness was high but they always came in different forms.

Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said an assessment of the mine would be made before operations could resume.

Govt Learns The Hard Way, Set To Review Mining Policy After Kadoma Disaster

Government will review the Battlefields mining disaster with a view to effect a shift in mining policy and the implementation of a raft of measures to engender safety and the formalisation of artisanal mining operations, a Cabinet minister has said.

This comes as rescue efforts have led to eight people being rescued alive while 24 bodies have so far been retrieved from shafts.

In an interview during his visit to Cricket No. 3 and Jongwe Mining Cooperative mines in Mhondoro-Ngezi, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said the review process will begin after scrutinising findings from the Battlefields disaster.

“We are going to review mining practices and unfortunately about two weeks back the Environmental Management Agency visited the site and made certain recommendations and observations which unfortunately were not enforced,” he said.

“Obviously it is a learning point and we will as Government have a serious review of this incident and come up with a policy position.”

Observations by EMA recommended upgrading of safety aspects of the shaft which had not been implemented when the shafts were flooded by water.

Among measures to be considered is the formalisation of artisanal mining activities.

“Formalisation will assist in the sense that it will enable Government to focus on formalised activities rather than haphazard operations.

“This is one of the issues that when we have the review will be one of the action points,” he said.

There are about 500 000 informal miners across the country and there have been growing incidents of injuries and deaths owing to failure to observe safety issues.

Minister Chitando said Government will wait for the review process as provided for by legislation before taking a position.

This also includes reviewing the role of those who failed to implement the EMA recommendations.

“We need to come up with a clear position on the way forward including a proper brief. When we have an incident of this nature there is a process which is provided for by legislation to review what has happened and make people accountable,” he said.

This comes as Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Priscah Mupfumira announced a donation of $10 000 from EMA to assist the bereaved families.

At least 23 bodies have been positively identified and the relatives have since collected them for burial with the Government and funeral service providers such as Doves, FCG and Nyaradzo providing assitance.

Govt Let ZIFA Down On COSAFA Cup Hosting

NO, THANK YOU . . . Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry (left) addresses the media in the presence of ZIFA boss Felton Kamambo in Harare yesterday, where the Government announced the country would not host this year’s COSAFA Cup

Organisers of the COSAFA senior men’s football tournament were yesterday left to search for a new host nation for the 2019 edition after Zimbabwe turned down the rights citing short notice.

Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry made the announcement yesterday following a marathon meeting with senior officials from ZIFA and the Sports Commission.

Zimbabwe, who last hosted the tournament in 2009, were provisionally handed the rights to organise this year’s edition, pending Government guarantees, when COSAFA secretary-general Sue Destombes toured the country last month and made the announcement.

However, after wide consultations which culminated in a highly charged meeting at Mukwati Building yesterday, the stakeholders felt the deal was not good for Zimbabwe because of limited time.

Coventry said they felt the country was not being given enough time to prepare a classy event as requested by COSAFA.

The tournament is scheduled to start on May 19 and run until June 1.

According to Coventry, the country was still open to hosting the event in the future.

“We have had some deliberations this morning and we needed to come to the media and the country and let you know of some of the outcomes.

“The main discussions were on and around the hosting of the COSAFA tournament and it’s been agreed that at this time the deal was not just very good for the country or for ZIFA.

“So, we will not be hosting the COSAFA games this year. But we look forward to having adequate time to be able to host a world class event in the near future.

“We want to make sure that when we do host an event of this magnitude that we are fully prepared, we have good timing. We just don’t feel that was given to us this time around.

“So, moving forward, we will continue to work closely with ZIFA in terms of what the next steps are and what the future holds in terms of hosting the event,” said Coventry.

There were also sentiments that ZIFA should have consulted all the relevant stakeholders before the announcement by COSAFA.

Zimbabwe last hosted the tournament in 2009 and were hoping to defend their title at home after winning a record sixth silverware last year in South Africa.

The organisers of the regional competition want a bigger event this year which incorporates 16 teams for the first time.

They were confident Zimbabwe had the capacity following the successful hosting of the women’s edition two years ago in Bulawayo where 12 teams participated.

There are also spin-offs that are expected from hosting such events but, with the short notice, the country was just not well placed to reap the benefits.

Sources said ZIFA had drawn up a US$2m budget, which Government felt was too high to realise meaningful returns.

The Government insisted they needed enough time to organise the event after they received official communication from COSAFA just a few weeks back.

“Being able to host a big event, we want to make sure that it benefits ZIFA, it benefits Zimbabwe as a country, and it benefits our people.

“As it is right now, the final documents were signed only late January and as far as we are all concerned, that’s just not enough time.

“The hosts for next year already know that they are hosts and have an entire year to plan and we feel that it is extremely important that we too as a nation get that time and in that respect be able to plan and deliver an event that we will be proud of,” said Coventry.

ZIFA president Felton Kamambo said ZIFA have accepted the arrangement by the Government and are likely to settle for the bid for 2021.

“Our team will participate in the COSAFA tournament wherever it is going to be held,’’he said.

‘’We will try and bid for the future hosting of COSAFA, that is, from maybe 2021 so that we have enough time like what the minister has said to prepare to host these tournaments,” said Kamambo.

AUDIO: Mnangagwa’s Latest Threat To Unleash Violence On Doctors And Human Rights Lawyers, And Shorten The Lives Of Any Deemed Protester

Parliament Dissolves Mliswa’s Committee

Temba Mliswa

Parliament’s Committee of Standing Rules and Orders yesterday dissolved the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development and is set to unveil a Privileges Committee to investigate allegations that Norton legislator Mr Temba Mliswa and three others demanded a $400 000 bribe from a local businessman intending to mine in Hwange.

The committee, chaired by Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda, met yesterday and resolved to reconstitute the portfolio committee after it felt that the relationship among members was so bad that they could not conduct meaningful business.

It also noted that members of the Mliswa led committee were likely to trade accusations that would lead to acrimonious exchanges each time they met.

It also resolved to set up a Privileges Committee whose membership would reflect the political composition of Parliament.

The composition of the Privileges Committee is still being worked on and the committee is expected to meet again soon to approve the list.

The setting up of a Privileges Committee followed a motion moved by Makoni South lawmaker Cde Misheck Mataranyika (Zanu-PF), who submitted that allegations against Mr Mliswa were of a serious nature requiring investigations by Parliament in order to safeguard the integrity of the august House.
Adv Mudenda confirmed that Parliament was constituting a Privileges Committee but declined to give names for those who will constitute it.

“We are setting up a Privileges Committee. I think it is premature for us to make public members who constitute it. We need to inform them first, what if they turn down the appointment. It is a procedural requirement,” said Adv Mudenda.

Sources in the committee said a sub-committee had been set up to identify the legislators to form part of the Privileges Committee.

“They will look at the political, gender composition of our Parliament. After that the SROC might have to meet again to adopt the names. But in the meantime the Mines portfolio committee has been dissolved. It has to be reconstituted but those fingered like Mr Mliswa should not constitute it,” said a source.

“The SROC felt that it had to put its foot down. The bickering among members put the integrity of Parliament into disrepute.”

Mr Mliswa, who chaired Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development, was implicated with three other members — Cde Leonard Chikomba (Gokwe Kabuyuni, Zanu-PF), Mr Anele Ndebele (Magwegwe, MDC-Alliance) and Mr Prince Sibanda (Binga North, MDC-Alliance).

In his ruling to a motion by Cde Mataranyika a fortnight ago, Adv Mudenda said Section 194 (1) (a) of the Constitution required that Members of Parliament demonstrate high standards of professional ethics.

It read as follows: “Public administration in all tiers of Government including institutions and agencies of the State and Government-controlled entities and other public enterprises must be governed by the democratic values and principles enshrined in the Constitution, including the following principles, (a) a high standard of professional ethics must be promoted and maintained”.
Adv Mudenda said Parliament had to act. Cde Mataranyika’s motion followed allegations by local businessman, Mr James Ross Goddard of JRG Contracting (Pvt) Ltd, that Mr Mliswa and his colleagues demanded $400 000 as “facilitation fee” to enable the latter’s company secure a mining contract at Hwange.-state media

“Obert Gutu Is A Bitter Man”

Farai Dziva| Controversial MDC-T vice president Obert Gutu is a bitter man and he should not be taken seriously, political analyst Jeffryson Chitando has said.

In a sensational tweet, Gutu mocked the MDC Alliance for failing to renovate Morgan Tsvangirai House.

“You can’t even repaint Harvest House and replace broken window panes but you fantasize about rebuilding and reconstructing Zimbabwe! What errant nonsense is that? Spare us the trash and hallucination! Zimbabweans have got brains!

The MDC headquarters suffered extensive damage after it was petrol-bombed by suspected ZANU PF arsonists during ShutDownZim in January,” tweeted Gutu.

Chadzamira To Lead Another Land Invasion Exercise?

Farai Dziva|The Minister of State for Masvingo Province, Ezra Chadzamira is likely to lead another land invasion exercise after indicating that Zanu PF is unhappy with the occupation of conservancies by white Zimbabweans.

Chadzamira made headlines after invading a farm belonging to a widowed commercial farmer in 2017.

On Saturday Chadzamira made derogatory remarks about white conservancy owners at the Thank You rally that was held in Mwenezi.

Chadzamira accused the conservancy owners of failing to embrace the hand of reconciliation extended to them by Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“President, Sir the white people who are occupying conservancies in Masvingo Province are ungrateful.

We liberated this country but the whites are still enjoying themselves through exploitation of our resources. They are using our land to enrich themselves,” said Chadzamira.

“They are barricading roads and placing barriers to prevent our people from passing through the conservancies they are occupying- this unfair,” added Chadzamira.

EU Maintains Sanctions On Bob, Grace

Farai Dziva| The European Union has maintained sanctions on former President Robert Mugabe and his wife, Grace.

However former Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri and former head of the Central Intelligence Organisation, Happyton Bonyongwe have been removed from the EU sanctions list.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana commented on the development:
“On the issue of EU sanctions, it’s encouraging that the EU has vindicated the President’s engagement and re-engagement policy by not escalating sanctions as campaigned for by some of our own citizens. “

Amnesty International Condemns Mnangagwa Threats To Deal With Protesters

Farai Dziva|Amnesty international has condemned Emmerson Mnangagwa’ s threats to deal with protesters.

In response to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s statement that the government will deal with those suspected to be behind the national ‘stay-away’ protests, including non-governmental organizations, trade union leaders, opposition leaders, doctors and lawyers, Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Southern Africa said: “President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s unfortunate comments are deeply troubling and unwarranted.

This latest threat is a sinister hint that the situation could become even worse. If his government wants to build an inclusive country that is based on respect for human rights, President Mnangagwa should accommodate differing views, whether they please his government or not.”

Fresh Massive Corruption Revealed At ZINARA Following Temba Mliswa’s Utterances

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Special Anti-Corruption Unit requested the 2016 Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) forensic audit which exposed massive rot in the country’s roads administration department amid reports that fresh corruption investigations are underway, the Zimbabwe Morning Post can exclusively reveal.

Highly placed sources also said the crack team has already summoned Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa, for an interview in connection with allegations he raised against a fellow legislator Dexterv Nduna which also implicated the speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda.

“Last week the anti-corruption unit requested that the forensic report be handed to them as investigations are to be commenced,” said the source.

“The unit has also summoned Mliswa for questioning on allegations he raised last week.”

In an interview with this publication Mliswa could neither confirm nor deny that he was summoned for questioning by the Anti-corruption unit.

Mliswa said justice should take its course on those who misused Zinara funds.

“It is very clear that he (Hon Nduna) was given 13 million Rand and 8 million US dollars to fix various VID depots, Victoria Falls, Sanyati road and he didn’t do anything and the auditor general’s report is very clear that he should be investigated,” said Mliswa.

Investigations carried out by this publication in collaboration with the Centre For Investigative Journalism in Zimbabwe (CIJZ) established that there was a forensic audit that was conducted in 2016 and it emerged that there were a lot of irregularities in the awarding of tenders.

The scam implicates parliamentarian Nduna and former Central Intelligence Officer Jimias Madzingira.

Nduna is alleged to be part of the people who abused $11 million from the road administrator.

“The forensic audit results were swept under the carpet because it implicated big names who were abusing funds from ZINARA,” revealed our source.

The audit results established that Madzingira through his company Madz was awarded a contract to build the Plumtree-Mutare road without following the proper tender procedures.

It was also established that some companies linked to ZINARA executives were given advance payments and never fulfilled the jobs.

The beneficiaries of the illicit transactions include Fossils, Jepnik, Henan, Tencraft, Notify, Bermipools and Twalumba.

Biti Appeals His Conviction As He Risks Being Kicked Out Of Parliament

Paul Nyathi|Harare East MP and MDC Deputy National Chairperson Tendai Biti who on Monday was convicted of violating the Electoral Act by illegally announcing the July 30 presidential election results has indicated that he will be appealing against both the conviction and the sentence.

Harare magistrate Gloria Takundwa ordered Biti to pay a $200 fine, or face week-long imprisonment should he fail to pay the fine. She also slapped a six month jail term on the former finance minister, which is suspended for five years, provided he does not commit a similar offence.

Takundwa said the prosecution had proved that Biti declared and announced that MDC-Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa had won the election before the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission made an official announcement of the election results, violating Section 66A of the Electoral Act.

Biti stands at risk of losing his parliamentary seat after the conviction depending on how the authorities will interpret the constitutional provisions.

In terms of the Constitution if a parliamentarian is convicted in a court of law they risk being kicked out of Parliament.

According to Section 129 (1) (i)(i), a Member of Parliament’s seat becomes vacant if: the Member is convicted
(i) in Zimbabwe of an offence of which breach of trust, dishonesty or physical violence is an essential element; or

(ii) outside Zimbabwe of conduct which, if committed in Zimbabwe, would be an offence of which breach of trust, dishonesty or physical violence is an essential element; and sentenced to imprisonment for six months or more without the option of a fine or without the option of any other non-custodial punishment, unless on appeal the Member’s conviction is set aside or the sentence of imprisonment is reduced to less than six months or a punishment other than imprisonment is substituted.

Section 129 (1) (n), which deals specifically with electoral law violations, states:

“If the Member has been convicted of an offence under the Electoral Law and has been declared by the High Court to be disqualified for registration as a voter or from voting at any election.”

The supreme law also provides an appeal against any conviction by an MP extends their tenure in Parliament, until the finalisation of the appeal.

Section 129 (2) states: “A Member referred to in subsection (1)(i) who has noted an appeal against his or her conviction may continue, until the final determination of the appeal, to exercise his or her functions as a Member and to receive remuneration as a Member, unless a court has ordered that he or she should be detained in prison pending the outcome of the appeal.”

Magistrate Orders CIO To Stop Taking Notes In Court Intimidating Accused Persons

Correspondent|A regional magistrate has condemned the actions of members of the police who have a tendency of carrying out their investigations on public violence ‘protesters’ by jotting notes during trial while accused persons testified in court.

Regional Magistrate Hoseah Mujaya said this while passing judgement in a matter in which nine men stood accused of taking part in the violence that rocked the country in January.

“One of the accused persons had to be stopped from testifying because an officer of the intelligence organisation was busy taking notes while the accused led his evidence. The police had ample time to carry out their investigations instead of finalising their investigations in court, this is not a police court. The accused is supposed to feel safe and secure while testifying in court,” the court heard.

Of the nine accused persons, seven were found guilty and are yet to be sentenced. The seven are Simbarashe Nyamadzawo (22), Talent Mugadza (21), Gilbert Jasimoni (34), Abisha Musakanda (24), George Tomu (26), Danny Sere (27) and Brian Zuze (23) .

Takudzwa Mutupa (19) and Brian Nyamayara (19) were found not guilty and acquitted.

The State led by prosecutor Netsai Mushayabasa said on January 14 and around 0800 hours the minor together with 300 other accused persons who are still at large gathered at Kamunhu Shopping center in Mabvuku disturbed the public’s security.

The minor who was armed with catapults and other weapons of mass destruction barricaded roads at the shopping center, throwing missiles at Choppies Supermarket, forced open the doors before they looted groceries.

The gang went on to throw missiles at various shops which were opening and providing services forcing them to join in in the shut down campaign fueling the violence and making commuters stranded together with private vehicle owners.

The violence led to the distraction of several buildings. The police who reacted to the violence managed to disperse the disgruntled demonstrators.

Rescue Efforts At Kadoma Mines Scaled Down As No More Bodies Are Found

Rescue efforts at the remaining shaft at Silver Moon Mine have been scaled down amid indications that there may not be any bodies remaining.

Machinery including heavy duty generators and pumps is being moved to Cricket No 3 Mine about 100 metres away where at least four people are believed to be trapped.

Deputy chief Mines Inspector Mr Tapererwa Paskwavaviri said they had managed to pump out water from the remaining shaft but preliminary indications were that there were no more bodies.

“We have managed to pump out water from most of the working areas underground but there is no sign of bodies,” he said.

Eng Paskwavaviri said they had scaled down operations with only a few pumps left to pump out the remaining water.

A rescuer Simbarashe Chidakwa said he believed there were no more bodies in the shafts.

“We are continuing with searches just to make sure there are no more bodies. I believe there are no more bodies because given the area that remains we should have picked the stench of decomposed bodies,” he said.

Pumping of water has been intensified at Cricket Mine amid indications that the process could take about a day before they could ascertain whether there are people alive or their remains.

Billiat Inspires Chiefs To Nedbank Cup Victory

Farai Dziva| Warriors star Khama Billiat scored in his first appearance of the 2019 Nedbank Cup, helping Kaizer Chiefs beat Magic FC 3-0 to progress to the quarterfinals.

Billiat came on from the bench at the start of the second half but had a slow start and couldn’t help to bring any change before the end of the regulation time.

The 28-year-old’s first notable contribution since his introduction was cleared off the line early in the first period of extra time.

However, he won a penalty at the stroke of the break which was successfully converted by Daniel Cardoso to give Chiefs the advantage.

Billiat later put his name on the scoresheet a few moments before the final whistle with a sublime strike to seal the victory for Chiefs.

In a Twitter post, Maroto, 35, said the injury forced him to hang his boots.

“(I) played about 14 years of my career with a badly operated knee (cruciate damage).

” I was a machine operating at half or less my potential. I thrived for just half chances and converting,” Maroto posted.

Maroto’s injury revelation came after one of his followers asked him why he did not make it into the ABSA Premier league with his scoring record.

“I’m a bosso fan but lumumba ndaimubigger…. But iwewe norman unoda 80 magate w that scoring record wakatadza sei kuenda kana kumvela league,” the fan asked.

Another was marvelled by the long time injury revelation, “Wow, I didn’t know about your knee, it even makes your achievements on the field of play incredible.”

Norman Maroto aka Lumumba has since retired from playing football as he now heads the Football Union of Zimbabwe communications department.

Club Brugge Confine Nakamba To The Bench

Farai Dziva|Club Brugge coach Ivan Leko has been lambasted for snubbing midfielder Marvelous Nakamba in recent games.

Nakamba has not seen any game time since returning from suspension and has sat on the bench in the derby encounter against Cercle Brugge and a Europa clash with RB Salzburg.

According to a Belgian newspaper, Het Laatste Nieuws, football analyst and former Club Brugge player, Marc Degryse does not understand why Leko has of late been using Sofyan Amrabat who seems to struggle in that position.

“This is the second time Leko has tinkered with the midfield – last year with Clasie and this time with Amrabat of which the latter is no better than Nakamba or (Matt) Rits,” said Degryse.

“Why does he necessarily want to be right with Amrabat? To me, Nakamba is the purest number ‘6’ in the selection, and he should start in the future.”

Zimbabwe Loses COSAFA Cup Host Right, Govt Involved In It.

Correspondent|Zimbabwe will no longer host the 2019 COSAFA Cup which was set to start in May.

Cosafa had named Zimbabwe as the hosts for the tournament last and were only waiting approval from the government.

However, Minister of Sports Kirsty Coventry revealed on Monday that the tournament will not be held in the country. She said the move was not ideal for both the Zimbabwe Football Association and the country as the announcement was made at a short notice.

“It has been agreed that the deal was not good for both the country and Zifa, so we will not be hosting the Cosafa games this year,” Coventry told the reporters.

Zimbabwe last hosted the event in 2009 where they won the trophy after beating Zambia in the final.

Mnangagwa Appoints DTZ, Nuanetsi Ranch Trustees

By Own Correspondent| President Mnangagwa has appointed a board of trustees for the Development Trust of Zimbabwe (DTZ) and board of directors for Nuanetsi Ranch Limited.

The board of trustees for DTZ are former Mutare City Council Commissioner Henry Nemaire, who is also a financial director for Tanganda Private Limited; Gwanda-based businessman and former mayor for the town Rido Mpofu; chairman of Art Cooperation Franklin Mukarate, Tatenda Muchekesi, a businesswoman and human resource manager at St Anne’s Hospital Harare and Ailess Baloyi, a former chief executive officer for Chiredzi District Council.

Others are a lecturer at Lupane University Dr Sibonokuhle Ndlovu, Bulawayo Provincial Administrator Konzani Ncube, Kadoma- based businessman (mining and agriculture) Francis Khondanani; businesswoman Thandi Nkomo Ibraham; former Attorney General Sobuza Gula-Ndebele and Dr Themba Ndlovu, a principal director in the Office of the President and Cabinet.

Nuanetsi Ranch Limited board of directors are Zimbabwe Agriculture Society chief executive officer Dr Anxious Masuka, Felicity Sekai Gutu, a practitioner and specialist in development, education, information and communication, Kwekwe businessman Solomon Matsa, Bindura-based businesswoman Maidel Masawi, Herbert Nkala, who is chairman for several boards that include OK Zimbabwe, FBC Holdings and Homelink, and Cephas Hodzi, a principal director in Vice President Kembo Mohadi’s Office.

Addressing a press conference in Harare yesterday, VP Mohadi who is also the chairperson for DTZ Board of Trustees, said President Mnangagwa had selected the DTZ board on basis of members’ business acumen, provincial representation and institutional memory and continuity.

Said Mohadi:

“The major task of these two boards is to resuscitate DTZ and its subsidiaries, making sure that the business entities are revived and run profitably.

Soon, the two boards will hold their first sittings where they will have to come up with their strategic plans to turn around DTZ and its business entities.”

VP Mohadi took the opportunity to dismiss inaccuracies being peddled by some people on DTZ and Nuanetsi Ranch.

These include claims that Nuanetsi Ranch was a personal asset of former Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo and is part of the inheritance of the late VP’s family.

VP Mohadi dismissed allegations that VP Nkomo left Nuanetsi to some founder members of staff at the ranch. He said Nuanetsi Ranch was not a Zanu-PF property.

“A brief background on DTZ and Nuanetsi Ranch will serve to dispel these distortions and misinformation,” said VP Mohadi.

“A comprehensive press statement will be posted in the major papers and it gives accurate information on DTZ and its subsidiaries where Nuanetsi Ranch is the major asset and flagship of DTZ”

The other assets include Zagrinda in Norton, Greencroft Coffee Estates in Eastern Highlands and Zimbabwe Bio Energy.“It is true that Nuanetsi Ranch was acquired by former Vice President Dr JM Nkomo.

He acquired it from the Imperial Cold Storage and Supply Company of South Africa to bequeath it as a national asset for the emancipation and empowerment of Zimbabweans. “Dr JMN Nkomo established the Development Trust of Zimbabwe (DTZ) on the foundation of Nuanetsi Ranch, having seen its massive economic potential.”

VP Mohadi quoted a letter written to then President Mr Robert Mugabe by VP Nkomo.

It reads:

“I would like to stress to you Comrade President as here under. 1. Nuanetsi Ranch is presently owned by a South African Public Company and it would be advantageous to localise the shareholding by taking over all shares. 2. Although the trust has its first object, the acquisition of Nuanetsi Ranch, nevertheless the objects, are so wide that they enable the Trustees and the management team to do almost anything within the law.”

VP Mohadi said DTZ was established to promote the interests, wellbeing, education and economic experience of Zimbabweans.

Stop Blaming Sanctions For Your Gross Incompetence, Mnangagwa Told

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

Farai Dziva|In an open letter to Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa and his cronies, a Masvingo based political analyst has said ruling party apparatchiks must stop blaming sanctions for their own incompetence.

In the letter former National People’s Party Spokesperson Jeffryson Chitando castigated Mnangagwa and his cronies for bombarding hapless Zimbabweans with cheap political propaganda.

See the letter below:

Contrary to claims that the US sanctions have cut off aid to Zimbabwe, the country is receiving more aid than most countries that not under targeted sanctions.

In 2018 alone ,US $162million aid was spent by the USA government in Zimbabwe.

The only difference is that the US $162million did not get into the pockets of the Zimbabwe Looters Club.

How much did Russia and China spend to assist Zimbabweans?Have you ever seen an NGO from China or Russia donating food in the rural or urban areas during time of need?

Sulumani Rescues Mukanya

Own Correspondent|Outspoken Chimurenga music legend, Thomas Mapfumo had a sigh of relief over the weekend following impressive numbers that showed up for his concert together with Sulumani Chimbetu at Club Las Vega.

Sulu turned out a savior for the 73-year-old as unanticipated numbers – as per Mukanya’s trend – thronged the Southerton night hideout spot.

However, it could not be established whether the numbers translated into targeted gains for the singers as most people negotiated to pay $20 bond against gate charge that had been fixed at US$10.

Since arrival from his United States of America (USA) base, early December, Mapfumo’s shows have been characterized by poor attendance.

Even the attention that shifted towards the “Nyoka Musango” hit-maker following Tuku’s death, attacking Sungura maestro Alick Macheso could not aide and boost numbers at his shows.

Mukanya has remained bullish and ignorant to the reality of his wearing off popularity and continues to lineup shows across the country.

Could it be high time he hangs the mic?

By Reassigning Senior Army Officers Who Is Mnangagwa Fighting? Bob Or Chiwenga?

Farai Dziva|Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has reassigned senior army to diplomatic missions in a move calculated to weed out elements believed to be sympathetic to former President Robert Mugabe.

According to state media reports, Mnangagwa has reassigned Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba, Major General Martin Chedondo, Major General Anselem Sanyatwe and Air Force deputy commander, Shebba Shumbayaonda to diplomatic missions.

Zanu PF insiders have revealed the move is meant to purge elements that are sympathetic to Mugabe. However some sources argue the so called promotion of the army generals is a result of the silent battle between Mnangagwa and Constantino Chiwenga.

“That’s a clever gambit well calculated to purge individuals thought to be aligned the Mugabe administration.

Mnangagwa wants to establish his own system. This is a complete overhaul that is taking place,” intelligence sources revealed.

Chamisa Responds To Mnangagwa’s Threats To “Kill Protesters”

Farai Dziva|MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has said Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa’ s hypocrisy has been exposed.

Addressing ruling party supporters in Mwenezi on Saturday, Mnangagwa declared that the government was ready to crush violent protests.

Responding to Mnangagwa’ s utterances Chamisa said:”If anyone ever doubted the source of the orgy of violence against Zimbabweans, this video is your answer. How can a party leader in a country take such sadistic pleasure in the beating up of his fellow countrymen – that he is supposed to be protecting? Is this the New Dispensation?”

Chamisa also commented on the alleged disregard of constitutionalism by the MDC A to consolidate his grip on power : “The period of 12 months is for an extraordinary congress. Why have an extraordinary congress when the ordinary congress is now due and preparations for it are at an advanced stage? We have a constitution and party organs resolutions.”

“Command Injustice On Deputy Chairperson Hon. Tendai Biti”

Command injustice was today displayed when the court convicted and sentenced MDC Deputy National Chairperson Hon Tendai Biti for ‘announcing results’.

This is despite the fact that the court itself confirmed that Hon. Biti had not referred specifically to any figures and that he had mentioned that he expected ZEC to make an official result which up to now has three sets of results.

No one to day knows the exact figures.

The military government is aware that the results announced by ZEC were not authentic, they are unreliable and untraceable. This is why the Zanu PF government is persecuting anyone who dares challenge the results.

More importantly it is in sync with Mnangagwa’s statements made in Rutenga over the weekend.
The weight of the statements he made are that the military State will go after everyone who stands for facts and for justice in its pursuit of command injustice.

Mnangagwa intends to persecute lawyers and doctors who assisted victims of state- sponsored violence and subsequent crackdown on known MDC activists.

The MDC is aware that this conviction is part of that plan.

In fact, the prosecutor stated before the court, on record, that they intended to use the sentence to scare “those who choose politics” as a way of life.

The arguments had nothing to do with the law or the pursuit of justice but a shocking attempt to take away political rights.

The MDC is concerned that Mnangagwa’s statements in effect suspends the constitution, the principles of independence of the judiciary, separation of powers and the right of citizens to legal representation and access to natural justice.

The deployment of military personnel in the National Prosecution Authority solely serves the purpose of command injustice, the military must not take over civilian institutions.

Civilian courts must never be turned into court martials.

Chadzamira Sparks Racial Inferno

Farai Dziva|The Minister of State for Masvingo Province, Ezra Chadzamira has sparked a raging racial inferno after he publicly denigrated owners of conservancies in Masvingo.

Chadzamira made the derogatory remarks about white conservancies owners at the Thank You rally that was held in Mwenezi on Saturday.

MDC A Mash West Fully Behind Chamisa

Farai Dziva|The MDC A Mashonaland West Provincial Executive is fully behind party leader Nelson Chamisa in spite of attempts by external forces to push the youthful leader out of office.

Below is the full statement that has been released by the MDC A Mashonaland West Provincial Executive:

The MDC Mash West Provincial Executive Committee met today( yesterday)and unanimously reaffirmed its unwavering support for the People’s President Hon Advocate Nelson Chamisa who carries the voice and backing of 2,6 million Zimbabweans.

The PEC is quite cognisant of ZANU PF machinations to derail and continuously delay change as evidenced by a barrage of systematic attacks on the person of President Chamisa by ZANU functionaries, proxies and Judas Iscariots- which culminated in a theatrical interview last night on ZBC TV.

We are quite aware of these functionaries’ shenanigans-they are being sponsored to destroy the party but that is just mere wishful thinking.

As a province, our attention is on fulfilling the people’s agenda.

It is this vision which was inherited by President Chamisa that we will protect with our all.

The Mash West PEC guards President Tsvangirai’s legacy jealously and we believe this legacy is only safe under President Chamisa’s leadership as he is the one who has walked along the road to freedom – with our late but great Founder and icon Dr Tsvangirai. He has been there and he will betray the values and principles of the poor people’s struggle.

We stand ready to defend the people’s struggle and protect l the president from all evil machinations.

Drama As Chiwenga’s Away, Mnangagwa Takes Advantage To Dump Presidential Guard Soldiers, But Wait A Minute, He’s Actually Promoted Them

In what appeared like a positive move, ZANU PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa took “convenience” in the absence of Vice President Constantino Guvheya Chiwenga to dump the Presidential guard and appoint the Airforce of Zimbabwe officials as his security.

The Presidential guard is reportedly aligned to Vice President Chiwenga, and it appeared as if Mnangagwa has demoted them; but the reality is that he has actually promoted them.

During the rally held on Saturday at Mwenenzi Mnangagwa was seen guarded by Airforce officers that the regular yellow beret Presidential guard.

On Monday Professor Jonathan Moyo took to Twitter to attempt to explain the changes that are happening in the military.

In a major shakeup, Mnangagwa has replaced his Army aide de-camp, Col Never Makuyana (right), with his security and Airforce officers (left). Mnangagwa is using the absence of Chiwenga, whose health has reportedly deteriorated, to ring out system-wide changes in the military!

Major General Sanyatwe, former PG commander and plotter in Nov 2017 coup and 1 Aug 2018 massacre, was sidelined under COMMAND AGRICULTURE; ahead of the release of the Motlanthe Report. Mnangagwa wants him away to Tanzania as Ambassador, but he’s resisting due to his poor English!

The incoming Commander of the notorious Presidential Guard (PG) is Brigadier General Fidelis Mhonda, whose brutal role in the 2008 Army atrocities drew widespread condemnation. He’s to be deputized by Col Makuyana, Mnangagwa’s ditched aide-de-camp!

Last year there were reports that the Zimbabwe Defense Forces was divided with the Zimbabwe National Army mainly supporting Mnangagwa along with the Airforce of Zimbabwe.

The Presidential guard and some barracks were seemingly pledging their loyalty to Chiwenga.

Govt Rushes To Belittle Heads Roll In The Army

Paul Nyathi|Government has claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa only retired and reassigned the four notorious senior military officers who were all somewhat fingured in the killings of citizens during protests in Harare.

Chief Secretary to the cabinet Misheck Sibanda rushed to issue a statement after an exposè by ZimEye.com that the four had unceremoniously been removed from the army exactly a month after being promoted.

According to an unconvincing statement by Sibanda the removal of the soldiers to the Diplomatic Service is in line with Government’s critical global engagement and re-engagement strategy.

Dr Sibanda’s rushed statement.

Last month President Mnangagwa made a chilling declaration that some big heads were going to roll in the army after he cut short his visit oversees on reports that army officers were killing civilians.

Sibanda said Major Generals Martin Chedondo, Douglas Nyikayaramba, Anselem N Sanyatwe and Air Vice Marshal Shebba Shumbayawonda are set to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade pending finalisation of diplomatic consultations.

According to Sibanda the government will release accreditation details for each of the four senior officers once various bilateral consultations are concluded.

It remains to be seen which countries the four will be deployed to in the wake of known human rights abuses against them.

“His Excellency the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces thanks the four officers for serving their country with honour and dedication in the Defence Forces, and wish the successful careers in the Diplomatic Service,” reads the statement.

EU To Renew Sanctions On Illegitimate Zanu PF – Imperative, Step Down Before 2023

By Wilbert Mukori | All those who love peace and justice and understand the need to end the long suffering of the people of Zimbabwe after 38 years and counting of this Zanu PF dictatorship will hearty welcomes EU Parliament recent resolutions designed to the Zanu PF dictatorship.

indepth…Wilbert Mukori

After 38 years of blatant human rights violations and tyrannical rule; it is now clear that the modus operandi of this Zanu PF regime is to do whatever it deems necessary, regardless of the law and even the sanctity of human life, to secure power. Present the nation and the world at large with a fait accompli of a Zanu PF government and only then make whatever promises and concession as long as they do not compromise the party’s hold on power.

When President Mnangagwa seized power from Robert Mugabe in the November 2017 military coup he and his fellow coup plotters were aware the national community would not welcome this blatant act of banditry, ever against a despised tyrant and a dictator. Those in the know dismissed the coup plotter’s claim that this was a democratic transformation since the plotters were themselves Mugabe’s henchmen who had used brute force to establish and retain the de facto one-party, Zanu PF, dictatorship all the last 37 years.

Mnangagwa had promised to hold free, fair and credible elections in the wake of the military coup to take the sting out of the condemnation of his regime as illegitimate. It should be noted that never implemented not even one meaningful democratic reform necessary for free and fair elections.

“Whereas the final report of the EU EOM states that the figures presented by the ZEC contained many anomalies and inaccuracies and raised enough questions to lead to doubts
as to the accuracy and reliability of the numbers presented,” EU Parliament rightfully stated in its resolution.

The vote rigging was so blatant the regime has failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters roll. There can be no doubt that Zanu PF rigged last July’s elections and real danger here is to fall into the party’s trap of accepting it as the de facto government regardless of it having no democratic mandate.

Mnangagwa and his regime are illegitimate and no one, inside Zimbabwe or outside, should make the mistake of recognising the regime as legitimate. No one!

This Zanu PF regime must be pressure to step down for four reasons:

Zimbabwe is facing serious economic meltdown that has resulted in tragic human suffering and deaths and there is no hope of any meaningful economic recovery as long as the country remains a pariah state ruled by corrupt and vote rigging thugs. Another year of this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF rule is unthinkable much less four years to 2023, when the next elections are due.

If this Zanu PF regime remains in power till 2023, be it as the ruling party or partner in a new GNU, the party will see to it that no meaningful reforms are implemented regardless of all the promises the party makes. We can be certain of one thing then, Zanu PF will rig the 2023 elections and once again present the nation with a fait accompli Zanu PF government. We have seen Zanu PF do this again and again these last 38 years; for the country to move forward we need to break this vicious cycle of Zanu PF rigging elections, use brute violence to cow the nation into subservient submission, promise reform to gain legitimacy and remain in office only to rig the next elections.

Zanu PF must be pressure to step down because it rig the elections and is therefore illegitimate. The party has rigged so many elections in the past and got away with it the party leaders now assume they have a right to rig elections. We should not call for free, fair and credible elections and then fail to punish those who rig elections!

Zanu PF must step down to create the political space and time for the appointing of an interim administration tasked to implemented the democratic reforms necessary to dismantle the Zanu PF autocracy and replace it with a healthy and functional democratic system of government.

The call to bring back the sanctions against Zanu PF leaders is a welcome move. “Calls on the European Council to review its restrictive measures against individuals and entities in Zimbabwe, including those measures currently suspended, in the light of accountability for recent state violence,” said the EU parliament.” See Spotlight-z.com for the full EU resolution.

It is important that the sanctions are imposed as soon as possible, the political situation is Zimbabwe is dire and time is costing tragic human suffering and lives!

The sanctions should be hard-hitting. Zanu PF leaders family, friends and supporters continued to enjoy their extravagant lifestyles under the last sanctions, this must stop.

Zanu PF has recruited academics and professionals to be the regime’s representatives, people like Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube and Minister Kirsty Coventry. They must all be included in the new and tougher sanctions list!

There are opposition politicians too who have continue to participate in Zimbabwe’s flawed and illegal elections in total disregard of the warning that doing so only gave the process some modicum of credibility. In the past some of these opposition politicians have called for sanctions but only to help Zanu PF rig the elections by contesting the flawed elections. All those playing any part in perpetuating the curse of rigged elections must be included in the new sanctions regime. – zsdemocrats.blogspot.com

Instead Of Mourning, Mines Deputy Minister Throws Blame At Battlefields Miners

The Battlefields disaster, where close to 50 illegal miners could have died in flooded tunnels, may have been caused by mining activities along a water channel.

In an interview after visiting the site, Mines and Mining Development Deputy Minister Polite Kambamura said preliminary assessments led to the conclusion which was against the law.

“These miners were operating along a water channel which is against the Mines and Minerals Act. They tried to block the water channel 300 metres away from where the shafts are but there was a flood,” he said.

He said there was need to capacitate provincial and regional offices to conduct inspections of operations across the country.

Meanwhile, efforts to drain water from the tunnels and shafts at Cricket No. 3 Mine and Baxter Mine are continuing as efforts continue to retrieve the bodies of the victims.

Emotional Mnangagwa Summons All Powerful Rautenbach To His Office, Nation Awaits To See What He Will Do To Him.

Paul Nyathi|PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has summoned controversial businessman Billy Rautenbach to answer to charges that he is denying thousands of Chingwizi villagers access to potable water after fencing off boreholes and grazing land in Nuanetsi Ranch.

Speaking at a thank you rally at Rutenga Primary School in Mwenezi on Saturday, Masvingo Provincial Affairs minister Ezra Chadzamira said Rautenbach — who has a wildlife conservancy in the vast ranch close to where the 18 000 residents of Chingwizi were resettled — is ill-treating villagers who were displaced from the Tugwi-Mukosi Dam flood basin in 2014.

“We have some whites who have wildlife conservancies. They are enjoying selling trophies outside and slaughtering the wildlife for butcheries without doing corporate social responsibility programmes. They actually ill-treat the neigbouring communities like in Chingwizi where they established boom gates to give a curfew and fenced-off water sources and grazing lands for the villagers. He who does not respect people, therefore, has no place in the new dispensation,” Chadzamira said.

Mnangagwa said Chadzamira should bring Rautenbach to his office today (Monday) or Tuesday.

“There are some whites with big farms and yet deny people drinking water. Am told villagers get salty water and yet fresh water goes to animals. I say to Chadzamira, bring the culprit to me on Monday or Tuesday and repeat what you said while he is there and see how he leaves my office,” Mnangagwa said.

Rauntenbach, a close ally to former President Robert Mugabe, eyes setting up an ethanol plant in Nuanetsi Ranch, where the villagers are settled, is, however, believed to have strong business ties with top officials in Zanu PF.

The party treats him with kid gloves, hence he is among the few whites who were exempted from land takeovers by the ruling party since 2000 when the chaotic land reform programme started.

Lands and Agriculture minister Perrance Shiri in October offered 10 000 hectares of land to Rautenbach to expand his farming activities in Kanyemba, along the Zambezi River.

Shiri made the shocking offer at a stakeholder meeting with the Kanyemba villagers, where government was planning to set up a community irrigation scheme as well as a service centre for the long marginalised Doma people in Mashonaland Central province.

Rautenbach was part of the meeting, which was also attended by Local Government minister July Moyo, Tourism minister Priscah Mupfumira, Transport minister Joel Biggie Matiza and ICT minister Kazembe Kazembe.

Shiri said Rautenbach, who already controls large tracts of land in Chisumbanje, under his Greenfuel company for the production of ethanol, has airways been impressing government through his many projects in the country including a gigantic project in Manicaland province.

“There is a lot of irrigation water from the Zambezi River.

We can offer you (Rautenbach) 10 000 hectares of land for your agricultural activities,” Shiri said.

The nation awaits with kin interests to see how Mnangagwa will handle the long protected farmer.

MDC Officials Barred From Visiting Arrested Members

Paul Nyathi|Opposition MDC Bulawayo province reports that staff at Mlondolozi Women Prison in Bulawayo on Saturday barred senior party members from visiting party members incarcerated in the prison.

According to the officials, party National Chairperson Thabitha Khumalo who visited the prison with relatives of the prisoners was refused entry by junior prison officers who told her that she had to seek permission from their bosses to get access into the premises.

Khumalo and the relatives had brought food and sanitary pads for the party members who were arrested following citizen protests in the city on January 14.

Khumalo confirmed the incident in an interview with the media on Sunday morning.

“On Saturday we visited our comrades at Mlondolozi with the intention of giving them pads and foods since the institution are failing to provide standard meals and pads to inmates,” said Khumalo.

“Prison guards there told us that we were not allowed to visit the inmates because they are not our relatives.

“When I pointed out to them that among us there were relatives of the incarcerated, they said the relatives were supposed to come alone without the company of party officials.”

“What ZPCS is doing in unfair and inhumane,” Khumalo added.

These people have not been convicted and they have the right to proper food and sanitary wear. Even if they are convicted, they still enjoy these basic rights.”

Efforts to get a comment from authorities at ZPCS offices in Bulawayo were not successful at the time of writing.

Farewell Dr. Charles Muzuva Mungoshi

By Tapiwa Kapurura| As I bid farewell our champion, hero, mind liberator and academic warrior, I must admit that we have been left with a seat too high to occupy and a bar not that easy to reach. We shall write but the style and content shall never be the same.

This past week, the departure of one of the best writers Zimbabwe ever had has left many who knew him or his works wondering regarding the way forward. Once a bus loses its driver, that’s when even drunk passengers and pranksters meet reality and start paying attention. Mungoshi was that social driver who cut through various terrains to get the message across the river.

Would there be any other competent writer out there to come up with eighteen solid books to move the Zimbabwean academic system forward while also holding fort on cultural values and relevance? Would there be any other upcoming pacesetter or torch bearer to write with skill and tact to lighten up the dark patches of ignorance among our folks? Who else out there could still rise to that distinct level of invoking self-consciousness to enthusiastically drive a literate nation forward?

There were a thousand questions to ask this week. The truth is we live in a dangerous time in history. Under current conditions and challenges of compromised grammatical skills, it’s now so difficult to read a straight vernacular language sentence, let alone a straight English sentence even from established papers in our country. Syntax or clear and persuasive expression have become rare skills.

Values have been wantonly lost through various tests faced through social dynamics including cultural relevance or the theoretics of much-embraced modernism. The internet slowly has taken over as brick and mortar libraries are fast sinking. Reading among the youth could be a time-wasting chore and not a hobby since the internet supposedly has it all. There is so much happening now than before and local written literature is fast losing ground in a very concerning way.

While today written literature has been clandestinely replaced by the internet, television and the radio as modern forms of entertainment emerging through technology, the sad reality is that we can have a thousand movies pass through our screens without having that impact Mungoshi could create in one set book. Be it in English like the book, “Waiting for the Dry Season”, or in Shona like, “Kunyarara Hakusi Kutaura?” any reader could be left enlightened and with something to chew upon. Mungoshi’s works were timelessly thought-provoking and remained a challenge on anyone’s critical thinking mechanisms.

I was humbled to learn that he was the one who spearheaded cultural relevance in post-independent Zimbabwe as he introduced black writers into the Zimbabwean academic curriculum. He appealed to various organizations like Heinemann and African Writers Series to dispatch African writers’ books into Zimbabwe for the curriculum. Without him, we would be stuck with English authors without any local ones to identify with.

We would hardly ever have known about prolific writers like Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinga or Ngugi Wa’Thiongo. He would be the one to even cause some French books to find their way onto our shelves in English. Without Mungoshi, we would never have known again of the Pacesetter series. Those were books that created enthusiasm in the young Zimbabwean reader to reach out for the next book and the next and so on. One was left with thirst unquenched as the mind was intrigued and fascinated to keep reading.

Mungoshi would be the man who spearheaded the coming of the Zimbabwe International Book Fair. Those in the literary world or academia would embrace the Zimbabwe International Book Fair as the last amazing frontier for published book information, book publicity, cross –pollination of writing ideas and general awareness on writing updates and publications in our liberated Zimbabwe. Even writers like Dambudzo Marechera would be later associated with the ZIBF and trigger the writing world to do further explorations and interest.

Eighteen solid books later, Zimbabwe has been left on a higher pedestal. Those who had the privilege of reading his works bear striking testimony. Thought provoking, educating, challenging, gripping, eye-opening could be some of the feedback from reading his amazing works that spoke to all young and old. Without him, we could still be claiming to have vision with open eyes and yet we could still be blind. Society moves quickly.

Ethics, values and preferences change with social dynamics moving so fast. Getting into independence without a wise competent social driver could have meant the whole nation going astray in lack of clear direction or appreciation of who we are as a people. Through his literary style, Mungoshi fought a war to defeat the swathes of ignorance in society as he invoked the sense of self-consciousness, pride in our being and revulsion for self-hate. There was so much to learn through his works and it was intriguing to cover his published masterpieces and emerge with various versions of his absorbing themes.

After tapping so much wisdom through Mungoshi’s brilliant creativity in literary works, we remain enlightened and gratified. Yet the question lingers; do we have a hero? How will history remember Mungoshi? Powerful? Influential? Educating? In what version will those dedicatory words be inscribed? On which or what type of stone can that be put?

Where do we put that outpost? Mungoshi had a journey well worth it. He moved mountains in academia and in society. He wrote for all from domestic workers to top floor executives, students, and teachers, those at the bus stop and those in the tavern. Everyone had a seat in his big tent. For thirty eight years after Zimbabwe independence, he consistently served without disappointment. His works remain timelessly relevant but sadly the Government has blinked by not recognizing him as a hero.

Is it because he never held a gun? The one who said that the pen is mightier than the sword remains correct. Mungoshi never trained as a soldier to be a national hero today. Of course, by fair standards all national heroes should not only be opponent persecutors, politicians or ex-soldiers. He did not pass muster on the criteria for a hero designed by the National Hero Choice Team but he covered more ground to match the effort of a battalion of soldiers that fought for our political freedom. Among those who had the privilege to read his books, or be influenced by the ones who read, he fought and defeated millions of hectares of ignorance and darkness. Through his brilliant works, he left a changed and impressed world.

As a result of the loss, the world shall never be the same. Two weeks ago we lost Tuku, a similar prophet. We are saddened by fast losing the real prophets that guide and drive society forward. Even if the government of Zimbabwe has not made Mungoshi a hero, the ones whose minds were freed from ignorance or dragged from confusion and darkness of self-hate will still hold him as a hero. Go well son of the soil. You played your part Dr. Mungoshi. You made a solid footprint. Even without a road, statue or building named after you, we shall always remember you and your works.

Musician Sings Regreting Voting ED

Emmerson Mnangagwa blasted

BULAWAYO artiste Njabulo “SizFire” Nyoni has lashed out at President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the song Cry of a Zimbabwean Child, blaming him for the current economic hardships and social unrest in the country.

In the song, SizFire chronicles the poor living conditions that have befallen the country and dares the leaders, who were voted into power in last year’s elections, to solve the problems.

“Blame it on our leaders, blame it on our politics, I curse the day we voted you in power Mr Mnangagwa because children are dying because of you,” he sings.

The musician told NewsDay Life & Style that it was his duty as an artiste to touch on social commentary affecting the nation without fear.

“As an artiste, I send my message through music and talk about what is affecting the people and also interrogating our leaders on how they are managing the country. As the electorate, we are the ones who put them in those positions and so they are answerable to us,” he said.

“We have a lot of serious issues that are affecting our country and, as youths, we should stand up and ask such questions and fix our nation, which has been reduced to nothing. Imagine a country which used to be the breadbasket of the region is now the second country in the world with the highest inflation rate and has no currency of its own for years.”

The 31-year-old musician has urged other artistes to have more commentary in their works.

“I urge other artistes to take the bull by its horns and sing for the nation, and not just come up with songs which don’t speak to the people,” he said.

“I have seen other artistes doing songs on how much money they have and how much fun they are having and you tend to ask yourself if they are doing it for the people or for the gratification of their egos.”

Born and bred in Binga, before moving to Bulawayo, SizFire said he was currently working on an afro-pop album set to be released later this year.

Makandiwa Warns Mnangagwa Of Dire Circumstances If He lets The Army On Citizens Again

UFIC Leader Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa has warned Zanu Pf Government of an inevitable international army intervention over Zimbabwe’s soil should there be any bloodshed, like the past incident which recorded 17 citizens dead, arguing that only talks between the two main parties will rescue the situation.

Contrary to recent statements by President Mnangagwa that he will heavily pounce on the next protest, Makandiwa warned the move will heavily backfire.

In his sermon addressing thousands of congregates today, Makandiwa said seeing blood in the street should be sacred and death of a single person must disturb the whole nation as life is vital and only God should give it and take it away. He said already, what he had prophesied in 2010 is now coming to fulfillment.

“If this happens for the third time it will not be good. We don’t want anything that will provoke the bees ( military) from outside. It won’t be our army against civilians, this time they will get an equal opponent, it is going to be army against army. We don’t want that to happen because where we are now, there’s still a chance.”

Makandiwa also explained that in his 2010 prophecy where he said a soldier ran out of bullets while shooting civilians, the real interpretation to that was a national secret, where our armory reserves had actually depleted to low levels and the government was not even aware and not ready, should the international community be deployed against the country.

Makandiwa also stated that he did not have a close relationship with politicians since they turn to order around man of God at the time they are supposed to be asking for the word of God.

“If you had a relationship with the current system you would not come here and complain over issues. What makes the relationship absent isn’t that, neither they or I don’t want it, but it’s because I don’t want to be told around what to do. In the relationship I should be the one telling you because you’re the one who cannot hear from God. I can spend ten years with you and never tell you a word from God, as long as you like to talk.”

Makandiwa also sensitively noted that there was a third force which makes it very unsafe for those who think they are in power and safe.

Makandiwa said that he was not comfortable with such prophecies as they make him more powerful enemies, stating that also speaking positively about the current system makes you an enemy of those against it.

“If you’re an outsider its easy to give such a prophecy but when you’re here it’s different. And I once said this one who is loyal (VP Mnangagwa) will be poisoned. Ah! It’s not because you want any favour. Proof that it was a terrible prophecy, don’t go by what I said or how I said it. I’m talking about you say something that even the victim himself was afraid to admit publicly that he was truly poisoned.”

There are times when you clearly deserve to hear the heart of God, not in parables, this is not prophetic, its an advise, this is already in the public domain, the house of commons is discussing this alternative already.

The UFIC leader said that it was not too late for our politicians to make good and must take the opportunity to dialogue and sit down in the best interest of the nation if we are to move forward.

“Unity is recommended at all the times, it does not matter you call it dialogue, from the word go, working together has always been the best option and you need advise towards this. ”

Makandiwa also castigated the looting that saw goods worth thousands of dollars going up in smoke and stated that this discouraged investment and makes Zimbabwe a very bad country for any potential investor

You cannot be looting from your own neighbors and friends after they spent their hard earned money to stock, if you say the government is evil, how much more evil are you when you loot from your own, There is no serious investor coming into Zimbabwe with such an attitude. If you are here and want to do something for the nation in the future, when you get to the position, do it with all your best.”

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces was also advised to completely remove soldiers from the streets and rather equip the police force with all necessary tools to give a good national outlook.

Highlanders – CAPS United Fans Clash Before Start Of Season

HIGHLANDERS and Caps United supporters will face off in a friendly social match that is meant to cement relations between the two teams.

The two supporters groups had arranged their inaugural clash this past Saturday at Municipal grounds in Bulawayo but the encounter was cancelled due to heavy rains that pounded the City and its now likely to be played this coming Saturday at the same venue .

“We just thought of having this match as a way of reaching out to each other and also promoting sporting relations amongst us fans. We have previously done that with Dynamos supporters and this time we thought of engaging our Caps United counterparts and they also embraced the idea.

We believe such gestures also help in mobilising support for our individual teams and also reduce hooliganism during matches,” said Progress Ndlovu, one of the organisers of the match. He said they will continue having such games especially on the eve of the two teams’ league matches.

MDC And ZANU PF Hold Talks In Bulawayo

Paul Nyathi|The ruling ZANU PF and opposition MDC finally agreed to sit down in one room and talk, ZimEye.com can reveal.

Reliable sources from within the parties told ZimEye.com that the two rival political parties held a two day meeting in Bulawayo over the weekend which included two other opposition political parties the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe and the Robert Mugabe backed National Patriotic Front.

According to the sources, the meeting discussed modalities on how the parties, who all are represented in parliament, can get their principals to meet and formulate a prosperous way forward for the country.

Last week President Emmerson Mnangagwa called for a meeting inviting all 2018 presidential candidates to begin planning for talks but the leader of the MDC which is the main opposition party, Nelson Chamisa, did not attend the meeting.

According to the sources, the Bulawayo meeting agreed that talks should begin with the political parties that are represented in parliament before all the other parties and stakeholders are included.

The meeting is said to have further agreed that Mnangagwa and Chamisa should first meet and sort out their differences in order to make talks with the other parties effective.

ZimEye.com could not immediately get a comment from the MDC on the meeting but sources indicated that Senator Gideon (pictured) Shoko represented the party in the talks.

The MDC leadership has been adamant that it will not meet with the ruling ZANU PF party at any level without a neutral mediator. It is not clear at the moment who convened the Bulawayo meeting.

Local Actor’s Video Breaks Social Media, They Did It In The Presence Of A Child!

Studio 263 actor Jabu (real name Denzel Burutsa) successfully stole the limelight from Winky D at the weekend after his disturbing-tape emerged and started doing the rounds on social media.

People had been emulating Winky D and another artiste Gemma for their quality MuGarden music video. But in no time, long forgotten Jabu had taken all the limelight with people discussing his unpleasant video clip that has left many worried.

In the two-minute clip, Jabu is captured with no condom, in the presence of a child, making love to a woman who seems older than him. What has irked many is Jabu’s decision to have unprotected sex with the woman. Clearly concerned about Jabu’s health, most urged him to seek medical attention.

Some described the actor as a fearless person as he chose not to use protection.

“Ndomasoja chaiwo ka aya anoenda kuhondo achiziva kuti kunofiwa (these are real soldiers who go to war knowing there’s a possibility of death),” one Douglas Jekero said in apparent reference to the risk of Jabu contracting diseases.

“Zimwe ihlawoo! Join funeral policy and plan your will,” suggested another who felt that Jabu was doomed.

The presence of the child in the room during this act has also been condemned by some.

While the woman’s age is just a number, there were those who described her looks as disgusting and distasteful.

Others felt that Jabu needed help as he could have been taking drugs that led him to do this act.

“If you’re on drugs, please stop them. They’re messing you. That video is a sign that something is wrong with you brother. Get help,” commented one Nyasha Nya.

Jabu’s act certainly served as a wake up call to many to stop recording X-rated clips.

ZANU PF Ignores Requests For Mungoshi National Recognition

Paul Nyathi|Government and the ruling ZANU PF party have turned deaf ears on the Zimbabwe Writers Association through the National Arts Council request for a national recognition of the late veteran award-winning author and actor Charles Mungoshi.

The council had requested for a hero’s recognition for Mungoshi based on his contributions to the Zimbabwean society and abroad.

Sources told ZimEye.com that ZANU PF advised the council to write to the party’s Mashonaland Central provincial executive with the request which then was to consider the request and submit it to the party’s politburo for final determination.

Meanwhile the family is going ahead with its preparations for burial and have announced that the veteran writer will be buried at his rural homestead in Chivhu on Tuesday afternoon.

Mungoshi died at the age of 71 at Parirenyatwa Hospital on Saturday after being ill for 10 years from a neurological condition.

At a funeral wake in Harare on Sunday, a family spokesperson Tendai Madondo thanked the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Monica Mutsvangwa and her husband, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, for personally donating food items towards the funeral.

“We would like to thank the (Zimbabwe) Writers’ Association, musicians, actors and celebrities who came to pay their respects to Charles Mungoshi. We heard some good testimonials from various people. Special mention goes to Minister Mutsvangwa and her family who donated all the foodstuffs to be used throughout to burial.

I would also like to thank Nyaradzo Funeral Services who also came in and donated other needs such as the hearse, casket, toilets, tents, chairs and tables among others,” she said.

Meanwhile,Minister Mutsvangwa, who was accompanied by her husband and Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Nick Mangwana, said the literary giant has left behind a very rich heritage.

She described the late multi-award-winning author as a versatile and prolific writer.

In recent days, government took a different stance and began according national hero status to Zimbabweans who excelled outside the political spheres.

Academia Professor Phenius Makhurane and musician Doctor Oliver Mtukudzi were named National Heroes though their families asked for exemption from burial at the National Heroes Acre.

Parliament Meets To Decide Temba Mliswa’s Fate

Parliament’s Committee of Standing Rules and Orders is expected to meet today and constitute a Privileges Committee to investigate allegations against Norton legislator Temba Mliswa and three others that they demanded a $400 000 bribe from a local businessman.

The SROC, chaired by Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudend, is also expected to appoint an interim chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy which Mliswa was chairing.

The setting up of a Privileges Committee followed a motion moved by Makoni South lawmaker Misheck Mataranyika (Zanu-PF), who submitted that allegations against Mliswa were of a serious nature requiring investigations by Parliament in order to safeguard the integrity of the august House.

Clerk of Parliament Kennedy Chokuda confirmed today’s meeting during an interview yesterday.

“Yes, we now have a date for the meeting of Committee of Standing Rules and Orders. We are convening our meeting tomorrow to deliberate on a number of issues,” said Chokuda.

Mliswa, who chairs Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development, was implicated with three other members — Leonard Chikomba (Gokwe Kabuyuni, Zanu-PF), Anele Ndebele (Magwegwe, MDC-Alliance) and Prince Sibanda (Binga North, MDC-Alliance).

In his ruling to a motion by Mataranyika a fortnight ago, Mudenda said Section 194 (1) (a) of the Constitution required that Members of Parliament demonstrate high standards of professional ethics.

Mudenda said Parliament had to act.

Mataranyika’s motion followed allegations by local businessman, Mr James Ross Goddard of JRG Contracting (Pvt) Ltd, that Mliswa and his colleagues demanded $400 000 as “facilitation fee” to enable the latter’s company secure a mining contract at Hwange.

Biti pleaded not guilty on all charges.

Video Of Chris Mutsvangwa Saying: “Govt Blaming Sanctions Means Inability To Govern”

By A Correspondent| The video of ZANU PF leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s prolific post-coup senior advisor, Chris Mutsvangwa telling his government to stop complaining about sanctions and simply handover power to other people, took the interview by storm at the weekend.

The clip recorded more than 29,000 on one portal alone.

Mutsvangwa is heard attacking government saying: “Your only job is screaming about sanctions. Well, when you get the point of complaining about sanctions, it means you have failed to govern – you don’t know how to overcome, then surrender leadership. Give power to these who are inside here who want things to work, you will quickly see the country coming back to life and sanctions disappear,” he said.

Although he made these comments before the November 2017 coup, Mutsvangwa was said to have been communicating “truths” on the ZANU PF government which has continued the leadership of Robert Mugabe’s brutality henchman, Emmerson Mnangagwa. VIDEO BELOW :

We Will Not Fall Into Zanu PF Trap- MDC A

Farai Dziva|The MDC A says it is aware of Zanu PF’s sinister plot to divide the opposition party.

MDC A spokesperson Jacob Mafume has dismissed Zanu PF sympathisers’ futile efforts to push Nelson Chamisa out of office.

“We want to make it clear that we are aware of the agenda to destroy the party.

These elements are funded by ZANUPF which on record has developed a sinister interest in the MDC congress.

They prefer an MDC without its leader Adv Chamisa. The thought of an election against him causes them sleepless nights. This is because Adv Chamisa defeated ZANUPF hands down in the 2019 election.

The MDC will remain united and will not have an agenda set by non-members, surrogates, proxies and those who sup with the devil,” said Mafume.

“ED’s Mask Is Slowly Peeling Off”

By Stanley Goreraza: The picture of Emmerson Mnangagwa will give you a better understanding of the man he really is.

During the time he was Speaker of Parliament, a United Nations Investigation into the criminal plunder of resources in the DRC fingered him as the ring leader of the biggest illicit diamond smuggling syndicate from the DRC.

Also included on the list was Zvinavashe, Chiwenga, SB Moyo and others in the CIO and police. The diamonds would be transported into Zimbabwe via Military aircraft and then moved to various parts of the world.

For decades now, Mnangagwa has been notorious for doubling as the biggest buyer of gold in the Midlands and the godfather of gold smuggling out of Zimbabwe.

When Didymus Mutasa was kicked out of government, he revealed that the most prominent looter of diamonds in Chiadzwa was Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Late last year this was corroborated by Lawrence Kamwi who served in the former Presidents office. Mnangagwa and Chiwenga determined who could and could not mine diamonds in Chiadzwa. The two gentlemen have never ever brought up the sad issue of diamond looting and smuggling in Chiadzwa because they were in charge of it.

Many of the senior leaders in Lacoste who supported Mnangagwa during his cold turned hot war with G40, did so because they were beholden to him. Mnangagwa made them rich including Queen Bee Tagwirei.

The Mafia took over in Zimbabwe and with guns and authority, people should not be surprised when they shoot and kill citizens, rape and torture. They are just being who they are, the Mafia.

Mnangagwa tried to put on a happy face to fool the world but the mask has been steadily coming off. Even his language now has changed. He has gone full gangster with the threats and the screw face.

God help Zimbabwe.

“Sending The Army To Kill Civilians Is A Crime Against Humanity”: Chamisa Tells ED

By Own Correspondent| Opposition MDC leader Nelson Chamisa has reacted to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s chilling threats that he will deal with protests by sending the army to silence them arguing that such action is a crime against humanity.

Chamisa acussed Mnangagwa and Zanu Pf of infiltrating peaceful protests in order to justify army crackdown and killing of civilians adding that all this shall end as the people will one day have their freedom.

He said:

Sending the army to kill the people is a crime against humanity. The people whom Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa refers to as having burned cars and police stations are Zanu pf members who infiltrated the peaceful protests in order for you to justify crackdown. You and your party commit crimes so that you murder innocent civilians. Not good at all but trust me, nothing goes on and on forever. The people shall have their freedom.

We Have Evidence To Prove That NGOs Funded Protests- Mnangagwa

Farai Dziva|Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday blamed Non Governmental Organisations for allegedly sponsoring acts of violence.

Addressing Zanu-PF supporters at the ruling party’s Meet the People
Rally in Rutenga, Masvingo Province,
yesterday, Mnangagwa accused civic organisations of working with the MDC A to wreak havoc in the country.

“Nyika yedu yeZimbabwe, vatakabvisira chingwa pamuromo, vachena, havasati varegera kurwisa kuti chingwa chidzoke pamuromo yavo nenzira dzakasiyana.

There are puppets that they have been creating in the country that move around preaching violence. We in Zanu-PF want unity and development of our country.

If our chiefs preach unity, our churches preach unity and our party Zanu-PF preaches unity, our country will develop; there is nothing that will take us back,”said Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa Evasive On Chiwenga Health Condition

Farai Dziva|Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has publicly admitted that his deputy Constantino Chiwenga is not feeling well but he has not revealed the state of his deputy’ s condition.

Last week Chiwenga claimed his rivals were “wishing him dead” while he was in good shape.

Mnangagwa yesterday told party supporters at a rally in Mwenezi two members of the
party’s presidium were receiving treatment. He spoke in innuendos and did not disclose his deputy’ s health condition.

“As you can see, I have only Vice President Kembo Mohadi to assist me, the other Vice President, General Chiwenga, is not feeling well. So that is why he is not with us here.

We thought it would be important to
officially make this announcement because these are our senior Politburo members.”

“The national chairman (national chairperson Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri) is also not here. She had to receive her regular treatment for the
injuries she suffered during the bomb explosion.

When the bombing incident happened in Bulawayo, Cde Chinomona and Vice President
Cde Mohadi also got injured, but it’s good that we have them here,” said Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF Threatens To Grab White-Owned Conservancies

Farai Dziva|The ruling party Zanu PF has threatened to grab white- owned conservancies in Masvingo Province.

Masvingo State Minister Ezra Chadzamira told party supporters at a rally in Mwenezi the owners of the conservancies were inconsiderate.

“These people are inconsiderate. They are not giving anything back to the communities around. That must be corrected as soon as possible.

We cannot allow such things to happen,” said Chadzamira.

Defiant Grace Mugabe’s Ex Insists On Chamisa, What Is He On About?

By Stanley Goreraza|It’s not about what Tsvangirai said. It’s about what the Constitution says. Tsvangirai was not a walking-talking Constitution. You do not refer to what Tsvangirai said in a court of law but you refer to what the Constitution says!

Tsvangirai was not the Constitution in as much as he wasn’t Congress! The Constitution and Congress are judge and jury. They work hand in glove. Tsvangirai was neither. He was actually subject to and a product of both. Tsvangirai was a creature with the Constitution and Congress being the creators. The Constitution and Congress are like gods and Tsvangirai was a mere mortal.

A real Democrat would know, acknowledge and respect the Constitution and Congress. He is bound by the decisions and outcomes from both and submits to both.

A dictator though is ordained. One dictator claimed he was chosen by Mbuya Nehanda and that he is what Mbuya Nehanda meant when she said “mapfupa angu achamuka” That particular dictator was couped out of power. Now we have another dictator claiming he was ordained successor by a deceased man instead of the Constitution and Congress.

The Constitution and Congress are what produce a successor and not the word of one man.

This guy doesn’t have a single clue what democracy is all about does he?

CEOs Fume As ED Fails To Attend Vic Falls Roundtable Summit Opting For His Thank You Rally

President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday cancelled his planned trip to attend the CEO Africa Roundtable in Victoria Falls, amid a worsening economic crisis stirring resentment to his rule.

He cited a meeting with diplomats held in Harare on Thursday as the reason and also attributed the cancellation to the ongoing formation of a Presidential Advisory Council formed to help him in formulating key economic policies and strategies that advance his so-called Vision 2030.

The council comprises leaders of a variety of major Zimbabwean corporations, entrepreneurs, business executives, intellectuals and church leaders.

Asked why the president did not pitch up for the invitation-only annual business meeting, Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba told the Daily News: “For the simple reason that he had a fixture with diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe yesterday, and also because his Advisory Council is convening pretty soon to, among other issues, work on a framework for the next indaba with business. He may have missed a fixture, he has not spurned a constituency.”

The usual caravan of business leaders, ministers, parliamentarians, academics and journalists had trekked into the resort town for their annual February get-together, but the man everyone was talking about was 707km away, officially opening the 12th Zimbabwe International Research Symposium 2019 organised by the Research Council of Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa was supposed to be the “Guest of Honour”, billed to make a presentation on the closing day of the forum, which ran under the theme “From talk to unified action: Towards a more responsible and inclusive national economy.”

One CEO told the Daily News of Mnangagwa’s snub: “It feels like Hamlet without the prince.” That, bluntly, is how the CEO Africa Roundtable feels this year, he said.

Mnangagwa and his Finance minister Mthuli Ncube are dominating proceedings. A survey of business executives conducted showed that companies are worried by Mnangagwa’s austerity measures and currency rhetoric.

In Mnangagwa’s absence, it has been left to senior members of his administration — the Speaker Jacob Mudenda, and Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology minister Amon Murwira — to fly his administration’s flag.

Predictably, the concerns are strongest in the business community given the slowing economic growth blamed on Mnangagwa’s economic stewardship.

There is talk here of the need to ensure that currency reforms work for everyone.

One CEO said he had hoped the new president’s reign would mean stronger growth and higher corporate earnings.

There is also a sense that Mnangagwa is not effectively leading the country on economic issues, amid indications he and the business community have become distant and now have a strained relationship.

Mnangagwa attended the forum last year where his neck tie was auctioned off for a staggering

$15 000. After letting go of the tie, which he came putting on from Harare, Mnangagwa was offered an American flag-designed replacement, which he put on immediately.

Oswell Bimha, the CEO Africa Roundtable chairperson, told the Daily News the forum was at fault in Mnangagwa’s no-show.

“Look, when you invite the president, traditionally we have just written directly to his office and we have had to host him, but this time around we have been told we were supposed to follow a certain pattern which we accept we should have followed,” Bimha said.

“He is our number one CEO. There is an acknowledgement around the table that we have not followed the right protocol but we still are going to, after this, go back to our president because it does not make the outcome of this conference less important.

“We still need to engage him out of the collective that we would have come up with. So, next year, we will do the right thing, we will do the correct processes.

“We want to assure the president whatever bungling up of the process, it is not disrespect. We are not all part of the protocol processes done within these circles but certainly we expect him to be with us next year.”

Asked if the president had sent apologies, Bimha said: “We have failed to do the procedure.”

Asked to outline the procedure, he said: “The procedure is that we are supposed to write to our parent minister, our parent minister then requests the president or through whatever channels at the president’s office.

So, we did write directly to them, and writing directly to them, we did write on time and we are still wanting to be educated on how else we could have done it so that we could be educated on the process but also getting the president to create time on his busy schedule to come’’.

Bimha also said there was also a scheduling conflict.

“There are also critical issues that are happening within the president’s diary at this time which have coincided with this, so there is a combination of issues. And sadly, on behalf of the roundtable, we are very saddened that we couldn’t have him this time around.”

Asked what will happen to the forum’s economic reform lobby document, “Call to action”, Bimha said: “Very, very, urgently, our Call to Action document is part of our package to him. This Call to Action document is going to be value-added. Being value-added means the contributions that have come up of this are actually going to be put in the priorities that the members have.”

Govt Hunts For Ashirai Mawere Who Was Filmed Attempting To Invade An Avocado Farm

Jane Mlambo| Government has appealed for information on the circulating video in which a Zanu PF Youth Ashirai Mawere who was filmed attempting to invade a farm in Chipinge recently.

Ashirayi Mawere is the same who has represented his uncle, the businessman, Mutumwa Mawere as they ran a party that worked to sabotage the MDC party in the 2013 elections.

According to the information ministry Twitter handle, government policy on the need for normalcy on farms still stands.

Ashirai Mawere, the one filmed demanding the farmer to vacate the land was once a member of Mutumwa Mawere’s UDM party which has since collapsed. Mawere has also attempted to contest for Chipinge Central parliamentary seat under Zanu-PF and failed.

He was also the leader of a Zanu PF youths team that stole money from unsuspecting people in Chipinge under a housing project that was spearheaded by former G40 kingpins Kudzanayi Chipanga and Mubuso Chinguno.

Further To All That, Bushiri Conned His Church Members In Pyramid Scheme Investments

Following the arrest of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary by the Hawks over allegations of money laundering, fraud and contravening the Prevention of Organized Crime Act, more allegations from people of his church claim that the couple had conned them in pyramid schemes that were run in different branches of his church.

The two were, in the meantime, released on R100 000 bail each.

Last weekend, the Sunday Times reported that six people had claimed that they had been duped into investing in a scam run by senior members of Bushiri’s church, the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG). The members said they had invested R100 000 each in an ECG church account in the name of Palambano.

Following that revelation, more members of Bushiri’s church in the Shayandima industrial area have said that they were also conned out of their money into a scheme called Merger Chen Solutions (MCS). Investors deposited their money in MCS’s FNB account. The MCS account was using a Sandton address: 159 Rivonia road, Morningside, Ext 39, in Gauteng. The company’s registration is 2016/542059/07.

The members say they were informed about the scheme in January last year at the church, which has a membership of more than 1 500 people.

“Leaders of the church introduced us to Nicholus Mgiba, who is a director of MCS, and Tshepo Inama, a director and accountant [of MCS]. They said they were running the same investment scheme in Phalaborwa and investors had already got their money. A minimum of R1 000 was required for investment, but there was no limit on how much one can invest,” said one church member, who chose to remain anonymous.

According to the contract form of the scheme, those who invested R100 000 were promised R1.8 million after six months. With the hope of getting more money in a short period of time, many people invested R100 000 and more, while some invested R260 000 and others R300 000. Most investors are said to be recently retired people or those who are already on pension.

Within a short period of time, more than 300 people invested in this scheme and by March 2018, they were allegedly told the scheme could not accept more investors. Allegations are that although investors were promised monthly payments from their investments, no one received a cent from the scheme, and they started to get worried.

“When we approached the church leaders, they informed Bushiri, who sent a delegation to meet Mgiba in Phalaborwa, where he is leading Bushiri’s branch there. Bushiri also summoned Mgiba to meet him in Pretoria.”

The member added that, according to information supplied by their leaders and SMSs exchanged with Bushiri, Mgiba promised that he was going to pay them. “He said he was being delayed by SARS and the Reserve Bank. Unfortunately, we have not received our money until today.”

One church member said most of the people who had lost their money had left the church out of frustration, while others were just remaining there, hoping that this would give them a chance to recoup their money.

Limpopo Mirror has seen a copy of the contract signed by the investors that confirms that those who invested R100 000 would get R1.8 million in six months’ time.

No comment was available from the church at the time of our going to press.

Weird Teacher Smacks Grade 1 Pupil Head On Desk, Cracks Forehead

A GRADE One pupil at Amaveni Primary School in Kwekwe was seriously injured after his head was shoved against a desk by his angry female teacher.

The pupil was rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital where she received several stitches on her forehead which had been bust open in the mishap.

Kwekwe District Schools Inspector, Mr Bernard Mazambani confirmed there was such an incident at the school.

“We received the report to that effect. We have asked the school headmaster to carry out investigations and compile a report that we are going to assess.

“We will have finer details after reading the report by the head,” said Mr Mazambani.

He said the teacher, only identified as Mrs Matina, will face disciplinary action.

“We have instigated that the teacher goes through disciplinary action where she will be charged accordingly. So we have encouraged the head to charge the teacher as per the guidelines,” said Mr Mazambani.

Meanwhile, parents with pupils at the school, are baying for the teacher’s blood calling for her immediate removal from the school.

The unfortunate incident seems to have opened a pandora’s box as cases of child abuse are allegedly going unreported at the school.

Parents told Sunday News that there is a need for further investigations at the school.

“There are so many cases of abuse that go unreported at the school.

“The headmaster always sweeps the issues under the carpet. Even this one he tried to hide it until it went viral on social media.

“That is when he reported it to the district office,” fumed Ms Eustina Musekiwa, a resident of Amaveni.

Another parent, Miss Jacqueline Munokori said she once witnessed another case of abuse at the school where another pupil had her hand fractured.

Others called for the case to be reported to the police. The Government has banned corporal punishment.

Beitbridge Refuse Collector Crushed To Death By Collection Truck

A BEITBRIDGE refuse collection worker was on Thursday killed by a truck he was loading in the border town.

Town clerk Loud Ramakgapola confirmed the mishap which claimed the life of Kumbulani Muleya, who was on duty, and said the entire organisation was saddened and shocked.

“I can confirm the accident, but I am in Harare. The environmental officer on the ground, Maduveko Muchena, should give you clearer details. We are saddened by this development. It is unfortunate,” he said.

Muchena could only say the driver of the truck was in a state of shock.

“Police are still getting statements, but the driver is shocked. I don’t know much,” he said.

It is understood Muleya tripped and was caught by the rear wheels of the truck.

Matabeleland South Police spokesman Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele could not be reached for comment.

Hero Pilot Saves 344 Passengers From Imminent Air Disaster.

A PLANE was forced to dump thousands of gallons of fuel in the English Channel before making an emergency landing at London Heathrow after the pilot was told one of the plane doors was left open.

Thai Airways flight TG917 left London at 9:35pm on Wednesday and was bound for Bangkok when the incident occurred.

Shortly after leaving Heathrow, a warning light appeared, alerting the pilot that the cargo hold door was not shut securely.

Flight radars show how the concerned captain circled above the English Channel multiple times while burning and dumping fuel before bringing the Boeing 777-300ER back to Heathrow to land.

According to the Boeing website, the aircraft can carry up to 47,890 gallons in its fuel tank, which can cost upwards of £60,000 to refuel based on current fuel prices.

Webcam footage from Airlivenet showed the plane as it landed back at Heathrow.

There were 344 passengers and 20 crew on board, who were taken off the flight while engineers battled to identify the problem.

A passenger onboard the Thai Airways flight named Largh tweeted: ”Can’t believe that of all planes, the one I’m on had to turn back to Heathrow an hour into the journey TG917.

”As far as I’m aware, engineers are checking it out. Don’t know how long it will take though..not much information has been given to us yet, just sitting waiting.”

Airline officials eventually found that the door was secure but there was a problem with the warning light system.

Flight Lieutenant Pratana Patanasiri, Vice President Aviation Safety, Security and Standards Department, said that the plane was at 8000 feet before the incident when the light appeared.

He said: “The sensor for the cargo hold door look system showed an irregularity.

“Flight engineers took about two hours to check the whole aircraft. They found the notification light issue, there were no hazardous irregularities.

“The flight departed again at 00.32 yesterday (14/02). All crews arrived in Bangkok safely on the same day at 18.14, local time.”

Passengers followed the instructions and waited at the gate while engineers and maintenance staff checked the plane and it was refuelled.

The vice president also appreciated passengers’ understandings and patience.

He added: “On behalf of the Thai Airways cabin crews, I would like to thank all passengers for cooperating with us in this emergency situation.”

Sun Online Travel previously revealed what would happen if a plane door was to fully open during a flight.

According to ASAP Science, the difference in air pressure would suck anything out of the plane which was not held down.

There would also be a huge oxygen deficiency for any passengers who did not have an oxygen mask on.

Mnangagwa Not Open For Business, Dumps CEOs For Diplomats, Power Not Business

ZEC Commissioner Owned Radio Station Hit By Protest Resignations

A restructuring exercise at Bulawayo’s first commercial radio station — Sykz Metro FM — has resulted in the departure of two popular presenters amid indications that more employees will ditch the broadcaster.

The radio station is owned by ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo.

Prominent socialite Babongile Sikhonjwa, who pioneered the keenly followed Vuka Vuka breakfast show, is leaving the station this month end, Skyz Metro announced recently.

Sikhonjwa’s departure came hot on the heels of Patience Phiri and Lee Mangena’s exits.

Skyz Metro said its most popular presenter wanted “to devote more time to his growing entertainment business, which now requires his full-time presence”.

However, Sikhonjwa said he would only be able to speak about his next move on March 1.

“This is my last month with Skyz Metro FM,” he said.

“My last day is February 28 and I can only talk to the media as from March 1.

“For now, the station manager is the one who is responsible for all communication related to the station.”

Mangena, who was the station’s news editor, left after his contract was not renewed. The station has been operating without an editor for over a month.

Phiri, who is part of renowned playwright Daves Guzha’s latest offering, State of the Nation: Vortex, left Skyz Metro last month.

She refused to comment about her departure. Sky Metro FM station manager Goodwin Phiri said some of the employees left on their own volition following a restructuring exercise.

“We rolled out our plan for this year and part of that was to restructure and shift programming,” he said.

“Some of the people who left did so after the exercise and they did that willingly whilst others were not in our plans.

“As a station, we need to keep our position in the entertainment industry and as the leading station in Bulawayo we rolled out plans for the year, which affected some of our employees.”

But sources said some Sky Metro employees were not happy about the restructuring and were contemplating leaving.

Chamisa Blasts ED Again

Opposition MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa has took a swipe at President Emmmerson Mnangagwa over his recent admission to using soldiers to beat opposition supporters.

Chamisa in a Twitter post asked those who did not know the source of violence in Zimbabwe to watch the video clip in which Mnangagwa is addressing party supporters in Mwenezi.

ZIFA Cup Returns

The Zimbabwe Football Association is set to bring back the biggest football competition, the Zifa Cup, after more than a decade of absence.

The tournament was last contested for in 2005 as the Zifa Unity Cup and won by Masvingo United who overcame Highlanders 3-1 on penalties after the two teams had been deadlocked at one-all in regulation time.

Since then, successive Zifa leaderships have come along the way, promising to bring back the popular competition only to leave office before that promise was fulfilled.

However, Zifa president Felton Kamambo has revealed that they would be bringing back the nationwide competition, and promised an exciting return of the competition that was first staged in 1962 as the Castle Cup.

“The Zifa Cup is definitely on our cards this year. It will be bigger and better than in the past,” said Kamambo.

Kamambo’s revelation comes amid calls by football followers for an increase in knockout tournaments to add to excitement in the football show as they are only restricted to one serious knockout tournament the whole year, the Chibuku Super Cup, which is for Castle Lager Premier Soccer League teams only.

Unlike the Chibuku Super Cup, traditionally the Zifa Cup in Zimbabwe draws its participation from all the football teams in the country including social football teams.

In fact, the winners of the Zifa Cup qualify to represent Zimbabwe in the Caf Confederation Cup, previously the African Cup Winners’ Cup.

That honour at the moment belongs to the Chibuku Super Cup having been vested in the Mbada Diamonds Cup and prior to that in the CBZ Cup.

Former Dynamos striker Simon Chuma expressed delight at the possible return of the Zifa Cup.

“We enjoyed this tournament because it gave us the chance to travel and play against teams, which we didn’t know they ever existed. It was refreshing to see how determined those small teams wanted to beat us,” said Chuma.

Chuma said although he had retired from active football, he would love to play in the Zifa Cup and probably against his old team, DeMbare, as he was still playing social soccer.

Former Falhorn FC owner and striker Fabion Mahembe also remembers the year 2002 when his social soccer team Falhorn defied all odds and reached the third round of the competition after beating Chrome Stars who were then in the premiership.

The social club actually won away from home at Mbizo Stadium in Kwekwe.

“That was one of the proudest moments of my life. When I think of that, I feel a sense of pride. Those were the days. I hope when the tournament comes back, another boozers’ team would be able to do that again,” said Mahembe.

The tournament was an easier way for Zifa to make money as matches always guaranteed huge crowds due to the fixtures, which attracted families seeking fun.

Matches were also spread to such remote areas as Binga, Muzarabani, Sanyati, Chakari, Bubi, Buhera, Bikita, Gutu and Gwanda.

Caps United have won the highest number of Zifa Cup trophies with eight titles including four consecutive wins from 1980 to 1983. They also won it in 2004 when it was renamed the Zifa Unity Cup.

Dynamos have won it on six occasions while Highlanders have won it three times.

Bulawayo Rovers were the first winners of the Zifa Cup, then the Castle Cup, in 1962, when they overcame Salisbury City 1-0 in the final.

Ironically, Dynamos were formed a year later from players who left Salisbury City and Salisbury United unhappy with the way they were being treated at those clubs.

“Stay At Home, So That We Deal With Those That Want Violence,” Mnangagwa Chilling Warning On Proposed Demos

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has admitted that he deployed the army to carry out a brutal crackdown against opposition and civil society activists, which allegedly left 17 people dead and saw several women being raped by soldiers.

Mnangagwa yesterday told a Zanu PF rally in Masvingo’s Mwenezi district that he was ready to deploy the soldiers again to quell protests against his rule being planned by the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance.

“We saw them burning police cars and killing cops, where else have you seen that? But we said no, we do not need violence. We deployed soldiers to stop the protesters and they quelled the disturbances,” he said.

“Now they are planning more chaos, but we are telling everyone in the country that if you do not want peace, take part in the noise!

“Those that want peace, stay at home, so that we deal with those that want violence.

“We will sort them out. Those who come to you inviting you to the protests, tell them to pass, what you are saying has bad omens of Legion.”

Chamisa last week said although his party was not the one behind the January 14 protests that coincided with a Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions and #ThisFlag movement’s three-day stayaway, they were ready to roll out protests against Mnagagwa.

The youthful opposition leader rejected the Zanu PF leader’s July 2018 election victory and has vowed to step up pressure on the president until he orders fresh elections.

Mnangagwa told his “Thank You” rally that he was aware of a plot to launch a fresh wave of protests against his government and threatened a more brutal military crackdown.
“We have information that they are planning another disturbance. Let me tell the nation that those who want to join them, go ahead and those who do not want, I advise you to stay in your homes because we are going to deal with those who want violence,” he warned.

The president revealed that the government was hunting down human rights lawyers and doctors that assisted people that were arrested during the deadly army crackdown.

“In Harare and Bulawayo violent protesters were preventing people from going to work and even burning buses. We don’t want violence, so I said soldiers go and silence these people, they were silenced,” Mnangagwa boasted.

“In places like Bulawayo, they were moving around telling people to go and engage in violence.

“They told them that if anyone gets arrested, they should go to a certain place, there are lawyers waiting to defend them “If anyone gets hurt, they should go to a certain place, there are doctors waiting to treat them.

“We are now going after those doctors who were involved in those activities.

“Those lawyers that were inciting violence, we are now going after them. So those who choose violence, we are prepared.”

The stay away turned violent and the army was unleashed on civilians resulting serious human rights violations.

The Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights and the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights were at the forefront of providing assistance to victims of military brutality.

He accused Western countries of trying to effect regime change through the opposition and non-governmental organisations.

“Those who we fought during the liberation struggle, the whites, are still fighting so they can claim power again,” he said.

“They have certain people and organisations they are working with. Those groups and individuals are moving around the country influencing and leading people to be violent.”

Mnangagwa ordered villagers to report strangers to the village heads so that the Zanu PF government could sniff out its enemies.

“You know each other at every village, when strangers come, tell the leaders in your area, the village headman so we know the purpose of the visits,” he said.

“That is preserving peace. We should be on the lookout as our enemies are not resting, but ensure our eyes are always wide open. We will crush our enemies, and they are being crushed.”

European Union MPs last week recommended the tightening of sanctions against Zimbabwe saying Mnangagwa must stop the repression and return the country on a democracy path.

According To Mangudya There Is Nothing Wrong In The Country, Including The Economy

Speculation that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is readying itself to reintroduce the demonitised local currency gained momentum last week when former Finance minister Tendai Biti tweeted that the government was about to revive the Zimbabwe dollar.

Denials by the government have failed to calm the market as Zimbabweans continue to bear the brunt of a currency crisis that worsened following the introduction of bond notes in 2016.

RBZ governor John Mangudya (JM) yesterday told our senior reporter Xolisani Ncube (XN) that he does not see Zimbabwe introducing its own currency in the next 12 months because the economic fundamentals were not yet in place.

Mangudya also spoke about the alleged rift between him and Finance minister Mthuli Ncube caused by disagreements over currency reforms. Below are excerpts from the interview.

XN: What is your comment on reports of a fallout between you and the Finance minister Mthuli Ncube over the monetary policy statement, resulting in delays in its delivery?
JM: There is no fallout between the minister, Honourable Professor Ncube, and myself as alleged.

The whole story is all fiction and fake news of the highest magnitude. The meeting that is alleged to have taken place between officials from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, including myself, with the minister never took place, which means everything else that was alleged to have happened at the non-existent meeting is fiction meant to confuse the market for reasons better known to the so-called “reliable sources”. I don’t stoop that low.

XN: If that is the case, what has caused the delay in the presentation of the monetary policy statement which you once indicated was due early this month?

JM: There is no delay in the presentation of the monetary policy statement. The last one was done on October 1, 2018.

I am quite aware that the market is waiting for the statement in view of the need to ensure that the economy remains competitive.

We shall soon advise the public of the date for the presentation of the statement. The idea that we have delayed is being peddled by people with an agenda only known to themselves.

XN: How about reports that the delays are being caused by disagreements over the pending re-introduction of a local currency? Have you made any plans to re-introduce the Zimbabwe dollar?

JM: No, not at all. I read that from the newspapers and social media. It is fake news again.

XN: Do you think it is feasible to introduce a local currency in the next 12 months considering that the state of the economy remains poor?

JM: Economic fundamentals need to be right before introducing our local currency. We also need social cohesion. People must be prepared to accept it for it to succeed. So we need those to be in place and we are working on ensuring that we deal with the fundamentals. We can then start to talk about the introduction of a local currency.

XN: Considering that your tenure as RBZ governor is about to come to an end, what would you consider to be your biggest achievements and failures?

JM: I believe that I did my best by modestly working for the economy under very difficult exogenous geopolitical conditions and sanctions on the country.

The sanctions have three layers (which is) Zidera (US’ Zimbabwe Democracy and Recovers Act), Ofac (US’s Office of Foreign Assets Control) and Agoa (United States’ Africa Growth and Opportunity Act). Access to foreign finance under these conditions becomes very difficult, more so, for a dollarised economy like Zimbabwe that depends on access to foreign finance.

XN: Do you ever regret introducing the bond notes in light of the fact that their introduction worsened foreign currency shortages and did not solve cash shortages as was anticipated?

JM: No, not at all. The introduction of bond notes did not worsen foreign currency shortages. That’s a myth and fiction.

Bond notes were introduced to monetise the export incentive scheme, which greatly assisted the growth in exports over the past three years by an average of 25% per year.
Cushioning exporters by between 5% and 20% is meant to make exporters competitive and to increase foreign currency generation.

That policy cannot, therefore, cause shortages of foreign currency. In fact, the opposite is true.

The country needs to increase production and productivity across all the sectors of the economy in order to increase and conserve foreign currency.

XN: During your time as governor, the RBZ has signed deals with Afreximbank worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Why are the terms of these deals kept a secret if they are transparent and meant to help Zimbabwe?

JM: All the facilities granted to Zimbabwe by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) were done transparently in line with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Act.
The facilities have greatly benefited Zimbabwe at the hour of need.

XN: If you are given a fresh term as RBZ governor, what would you do differently?

JM: The role of the governor of RBZ as enshrined in the RBZ Act is to safeguard price and financial sector stability, I would do that as required by the law and I am doing it.

XN: Has the recent fuel price increase eased the pressure on the RBZ in terms of sourcing for foreign currency?

JM: The increase in the price of fuel indeed eased pressure on foreign exchange demand and on arbitrage opportunities.

We had a lot of exploiting of the price to the detriment of the economy.

The price of fuel was undervalued compared to its value across the region and this caused the pressure on us.

XN: For how long will the RBZ maintain the 1:1 rate between the US dollar and the bond notes given the fact that the market has rejected this notion?

JM: The purpose of the export incentive scheme was to provide a premium to exporters so that they continue to increase foreign currency earnings required to maintain the 1:1 parity and I think we are doing that.

As I said, I believe the export incentive has helped us increase our foreign currency earnings and maintain the 1:1 parity.

They Had Their Loved Ones Killed By The Army, Now They Are Being Harassed Into Silence Then Mnangagwa Says They Are Lying.

The deadly army crackdown against civil society and opposition activists might have been paused, but relatives of some of the people that were killed by soldiers are living in fear following alleged threats by security forces.

Following the government’s spirited efforts to play down the number of people killed by soldiers, The Standard tried to track down some of the relatives of the victims to tell their stories, but many were too frightened to speak out.

In Harare’s Epworth area, Thandiwe Ncube’s relatives initially ran away from their home when our news crew arrived at their house last Thursday.

After a few minutes, one of the relatives returned after she was convinced that the journalists had nothing to do with the security forces.

Ncube, a 53-year-old MDC Alliance supporter, was allegedly run over by an army truck on January 14 in Eastlea on her way to join protests in the city centre against the steep fuel price increase.

Her relative only agreed to speak to the news crew on the strict condition that her identity was protected.

“The majority of my relatives are in hiding because we are being harassed,” she said.

The woman said the family’s ordeal began on January 14 when they received news of Ncube’s death.

“On January 14 at around 12 noon we received a call from an anonymous caller who told us that our mother, Thandiwe Ncube, had died after she was hit by an army truck near the Vehicle Inspection Department’s depot in Eastlea,” she said.

“She was a known MDC supporter and had left home in the company of other fellow party members to go and protest in the city centre.”

She said when they arrived at the scene, they were told that Ncube’s body had been taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The family managed to identify Ncube’s bruised body the following day, but were not allowed to collect it for burial as police said they were still conducting investigations into what led to her death.

“People were afraid to volunteer information to the police because of the arrests that were taking place at the time,” the relative said.

“Police were actually threatening to arrest anyone that volunteered to testify as they would be deemed part of the protesters.”

Ncube was eventually buried on January 20 at Zinyengerere Cemetery after the family stopped insisting that she was killed during the demonstrations.

“We saw that the matter was dragging on and there was no solution in sight,” her relative added. “The family had to do what the police wanted.”

She said soldiers frequently monitored the situation during the funeral wake and relatives were warned against insulting the country’s leadership in their eulogies.

Ncube is survived by four grandchildren and the oldest is 11 years old. One of her friends, who also requested to remain anonymous, said she saw Ncube being run over by the army truck.

“We were on our way to the city centre to join the protests when she was hit by an army truck that was full of soldiers,” she said. “She died on the spot.

“A few brave people gathered tree branches to cover her body, which was left in the open for some time.

“Some people have been coming here to threaten us saying we must not talk about the incident.”

Epworth was the epicentre of the protests that coincided with a three-day stayaway called by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions and #This Flag movement.

Residents readily pointed to houses where people died during the protests, but many were afraid to speak on record fearing harassment by the security forces.

In Mbare, 19-year-old Tawanda Bushu’s relatives said they were being visited by unknown people enquiring about his death.

“I cannot say the family does not want to talk to you, but I hope you understand our circumstances,” said one of Bushu’s uncles.

“Every day there are people coming here to ask about a lot of things and we don’t even know if they are genuine.
“We have accepted that Tawanda’s death is a loss that we have to live with.

“Such is life, but I think we are not ready to talk to you at the moment. What I can confirm is that Tawanda died.”

A climate of fear still pervades Mbare, but residents said they were relieved that soldiers had stopped their patrols.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commmissioner Charity Charamba requested questions about the alleged harrasment of families of people killed by soldiers but had not responded by the time of going to print.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week raised the ire of human rights campaigners when he told France 24 TV that there was no evidence that as many as 17 people were killed by the army during the crackdown.

He also disputed reports that 17 women were raped or sexually abused by soldiers.

The state-controlled media has been on a vicious campaign to discredit reports about the killings.
However, the international community has reacted strongly against the crackdown and the European Union parliament recommended tightening of sanctions against Mnangagwa’s regime last week.

The MPs urged “the Zimbabwean authorities to put an immediate end to abuses by security forces and to promptly and impartially investigate all allegations of excessive use of force by police and state officials in order to establish individual responsibilities, with a view to ensuring accountability”.

They also urged Zimbabwe to establish “an independent body to investigate complaints of police and military misconduct”.
Mnangagwa’s government was encouraged “to withdraw urgently all military personnel and the youth militia deployed across the country that are terrorising residents in clear violation of the Zimbabwean constitution”.

A report released by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum on February 10 said 17 cases of extra-judicial killings allegedly committed by the army had been recorded so far.

The NGOs said since January 14 they had documented at least 1 803 violations committed by the security forces across the country.
They include at least 17 cases of rape or other violations of a sexual nature, 26 abductions, 61 displacements, 81 assaults consistent with gunshot attacks, at least 586 assaults and torture, inhuman and degrading treatment including dog bites, 954 arrests and detention (including dragnet arrests), among other violations.

Mnangagwa’s government has repeatedly denied that soldiers were behind the violations, but he promised to bring the perpetrators to book after Britain’s Sky TV recorded two police officers and a soldier brutalising a suspect during the protests.

The government blames the MDC Alliance for the violence that erupted during the stayaway and claims that protesters stole guns at police armouries, which they were using to kill people.

The army said it used force proportionate to the level of the threat posed by the protesters, who it says looted 165 shops countrywide, an assertion challenged by the NGO Forum report.

On August 1, soldiers killed six people in Harare after they opened fire on protesters that were demonstrating against what they said were delays in the release of the presidential elections results.

A commission appointed by Mnangagwa to investigate the killings, which was led by former South African president Kgalema Motlanthe, last December recommended that soldiers and police officers behind the killings must be prosecuted.

Dismissed CIO Officer Exposes Massive Corruption And Scandals In The Dreaded State Security Arm

A top Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officer has accused his bosses in the spy agency of victimising him because they fear he will expose their corrupt activities.

Augustine Mutambu, the CIO’s material resources manager, said most of the CIO’s operations were marred by corruption and scandals.

He said his presence in the secret service was being viewed as a threat, hence the senior management’s continued refusal to have him reinstated. He was suspended on March 19, 2018.

“I verily believe I was then suspended from work in an effort to dismiss me so that, knowing too much of their skeletons, the culprits would create an information gap within the organisation and no one would expose or know their shenanigans,” Mutambu said in his founding affidavit filed in a court application pending at the High Court.

Mutambu recently petitioned the court seeking an order to compel CIO director genera Isaac Moyo and National Security minister Owen Ncube to allow him to return to work and to declare his suspension unlawful.

He said, he was suspended on allegations of unspecified “improper conduct”, and was directed not to report for duty pending investigations.

“Of course, I now understand that the allegations against me do not have anything to do with state secrets, but that I am alleged to have been corruptly awarding contracts of service provision with respect to CIO works and purchases. This is spurious and the allegations have no merit,” he said.

“I was merely a secretary of the CIO procurement committee, which was often alternately chaired by the organisation’s director general or his deputy and composed of members who were all my seniors, including the director administration, who originated my suspension order.

“It is clear the organisation is using me as a scapegoat for their corrupt activities for I had neither power nor say over what they (procurement committee) deliberated on and resolved, except to record their recommendations for awarding of contracts or decisions to secure assets or liabilities for the CIO.”

Mutambu also said soon after his suspension, there were concerted efforts by the former CIO director for administration to cover up his corrupt activities by immediately appointing a former senior official’s girlfriend into his position.

He said he was ready to provide the court with a few examples of corrupt activities at the spy agency to back his claims.

“Acquisition of the organisation’s properties in Emerald Hill was irregular [because it did not] match the value of the funds paid,” he said.

“The then director general was directly involved. The re-doing of the foyer works at Chaminuka Building, for which I am now being charged, was supervised by me as a result of direct instructions by the then director general, then director for administration and the now current director for administration,” he said.
“I was often ordered by the then director general to carry out his completely private business, as where I traversed Mashonaland West province during working days to look for a farm for (his father-in-law) Madzingira, until I found one.”

Mutambu also said the former director had a score to settle with him because he believed he did not treat him fairly during his tenure as chief transport officer for the organisation.

“The short of it is that there is no merit in the claimed suspension, except as an abuse of authority to settle scores and a measure by powers-that-be to forestall leakage of their deals, hence its continued unlawful operation,” he charged.
