Matopos – Scouts here are reporting that between 4-7 rhinos were captured in the park Wednesday and being translocated to an unknown destination.

Not even Dambari Trust who usually do the de-horning at this time of year know anything about it. The Parks capture team were seen with cranes, trucks and helicopters.

Some rumours are stating that the animals are a pay-off for Emmerson Mnangagwa’s election “win” to the Chinese; But could also be for Hamersbach, according to a similar translocation of 100 elephants this week.

Mnangagwa Flying Off To China Again

Barely four months after he spent more than $2 million flying to China, ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa is flying back to that nation.

The state media claims the trip is meant to review “progress” made in the past three years…It is also an important meeting that will draft the policy measures for the development of cooperation between the two sides in almost every field — political, economic, trade, finance, infrastructure people to people exchanges, security and military — almost in every field, the below report says. Mnangagwa is set to hold bilateral talks with Chinese leader President Xi Jinping next week in Beijing aimed at further deepening relations between Zimbabwe and China when the two leaders meet during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac). The summit runs from September 3-4, 2018.

The Head of State will also meet China National People’s Congress chairman, Mr Li Zhanshu.

This was revealed by Chinese Deputy Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Zhao Baogang while addressing journalists in Harare yesterday.

Mr Zhao said President Mnangagwa would be among several Heads of State from Africa to attend Focac summit, a platform for interaction between China and members of the continental body.
“Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa is also invited and has accepted the invitation. He has just been inaugurated. On the sidelines of the meeting, on the afternoon of September 5 2018 President Xi will hold bilateral discussions with him. On the evening of that same day, our chairman of the China National People’s Congress Mr Li Zhanshu will also hold bilateral meetings with him and hold a welcome banquet,” said Mr Zhao.

He outlined several projects that China is carrying out in Zimbabwe which he said showed that Beijing valued its relationship with Harare.

They include expansion of the Victoria Falls Airport, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and the Batoka Power Project aimed at increasing energy to the national grid.
During the Focac meeting, said Mr Zhao, two documents would be adopted.

He said one was a declaration to have a shared future consistent with the theme of the summit. The theme of the summit is “China and Africa: toward an even stronger community with a shared future through win-win cooperation.”

Mr Zhao said one of the objectives of the summit was to invigorate joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for humanity.

“The second document is an action plan which will cover measures to develop cooperation between China and African countries between 2019 and 2021. This is an important mechanism where the top leadership meet and exchange views and how to develop cooperation between the two sides. This is also an important occasion as it will review the progress that we would have made in the past three years. It is also an important meeting that will draft the policy measures for the development of cooperation between the two sides in almost every field — political, economic, trade, finance, infrastructure people to people exchanges, security and military — almost in every field. It will cover quite extensive areas of the two sides,” said Mr Zhao.

He said the occasion was also an important occasion for the union between China and African leaders, a family union.

South African president Mr Cyril Ramaphosa will co-chair the summit with Mr Xi.
“We will also have roundtable meetings where all the African leaders and Chinese president will deliver speeches expressing their views,” he said.

During the last Focac meeting in Johannesburg in December 2015, said Mr Zhao, China pledged $60 billion in loans to Africa and 90 percent of it has been disbursed and processed.

Kombi Crash 13 Killed

Thirteen people died on the spot and 23 others were injured yesterday when a Chawasarira bus collided head-on with a commuter omnibus near the 152km peg just after Kadoma tollgate along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.

The accident occurred near Muzvezve River Bridge, about 10km outside Kadoma City at around 9am when the kombi, which was coming from Empress Mine, encroached into the lane of the oncoming Chawasarira bus.

The bus had 31 passengers and dragged the kombi for about 75 metres, killing all its occupants. Some of the passengers who were in the kombi require DNA testing for them to be positively identified.

One of the passengers died on impact after being thrown out of the kombi.
The Civil Protection Unit has been activated and will provide funeral and logistical assistance to the affected families. A raft of measures to curb road accidents will soon be tabled once the new Cabinet is announced.

Officer commanding Kadoma district Chief Superintendent Garikai Gwangwava said preliminary investigations into the accident pointed to a combination of a mechanical fault and human error.

“A Chawasarira bus that was coming from Harare headed for Bulawayo was involved in a head-on collision with a commuter omnibus that was coming from Empress Mine, killing 13 people. The driver of the Chawasarira bus lost a limb,” said Chief Supt Gwangwava.

“The driver of the commuter omnibus allegedly made a sudden u-turn in front of the oncoming bus resulting in a head-on collision. The commuter omnibus was dragged underneath the bus for about 75 metres, trapping everyone onboard.”

Kadoma General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Frankson Masiye said they had attended to 23 people and 22 were discharged.

The Chawasarira bus driver sustained serious injuries and was transferred to Harare Central Hospital.
“We attended to 23 patients but they have all been discharged except for the bus driver who has been transferred to Harare hospital,” he said.

The owner of the commuter omnibus, Mr Datsun Mapfumo, said the vehicle plies local routes and was coming from Donain, Venice, heading to Kadoma.

Moses Sibanda, who was near the accident scene, said they heard a loud bang and rushed to investigate only to find people trapped in the commuter omnibus under the Chawasarira bus.

“The driver of the bus suffered a broken leg. We realised that all the passengers in the bus had survived with minor injuries and well-wishers helped ferry the injured to Kadoma General Hospital,” he said.- state media

Bobi Wine Flying Off To US

Ugandan pop star and MP Bobi Wine has left a hospital in the capital, Kampala, where he has been receiving treatment since he was released on bail on Monday.

His aides say he left through a back entrance in an ambulance and is being taken to the airport where he will board a plane to Washington DC for further treatment.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been charged with treason after President Yoweri Museveni’s convoy was allegedly stoned in northern Uganda earlier this month.

His allies say he was badly tortured by elite presidential guards during his detention. He walked on crutches when he appeared in court on Monday.

The court granted him bail, saying he did not constitute a flight risk.

Man Sets Dogs On Neighbour Over “ED Pfee”Maxim

Terrence Mawawa| A Shurugwi man has been arrested for assaulting his neighbour and setting dogs on him after being incensed by the ED Pfee Maxim.

According to a police report, Evidence Makara called his neighbour, Thembinkosi Mayoyo on his mobile and the latter chanted the maxim ED Pfee.This did not augur well with Makara who went to Mayoyo’ s homestead and accused the latter of sabotaging the will of the people.

“Makara went to Mayoyo’ s homestead and upon arrival he began to hurl insults at his neighbour. He threw stones at Mayoyo and set dogs on him,” read part of the police report.

Makara, who is being represented by Advocate Mapfumo Mavese has been remanded in custody pending trial.

Statement on the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

Heal Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

This special day is commemorated annually on the 30th of August. The International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances was passed under resolution 65/209 on 21 December 2010 which expressed great concern on the rising cases of involuntary disappearances.

This culminated into the adoption of the International Convention for the protection of all Persons of Enforced Disappearances where 30 August was declared as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. The Convention recognizes the right of victims and their families to know the truth regarding the circumstances and fate of the disappeared person.

The commemoration of this important day serves to remind states on the need to enact specific laws that protect citizens against the crime of enforced disappearance. This can only be achieved through investigating reports of enforced disappearance and bringing those responsible to justice. Other obligations are rather of a preventive nature, such as the obligation to detain persons only in officially approved and monitored institutions in which all prisoners are registered and the absolute right to legal services through which a prisoner can be released from unlawful detention.

Article 1 of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance highlight that “no one shall be subjected to enforced disappearance”. Enforced Disappearances remain a crime that is not only degrading but generate insecurity among affected persons. The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) (also known as the Banjul Charter), a regional human rights instrument is also an instrument intended to promote and protect human rights and basic freedoms on the African continent. Article 4 of the ACHPR highlight that “human rights are inviolable” hence every human being shall be entitled to respect for life and integrity. Further to this, Article 23 of the charter also highlight that “all people shall have the right to national and international peace and security”.

What is rather disturbing is that besides all these international and regional legal instruments that prohibit enforced disappearances, Zimbabwe as a nation with a long history of enforced disappearances has not ratified key conventions that speak to issues relating to state obligations in as far as prevention of enforced disappearance of citizens is concerned. Conventions that Zimbabwe is yet to ratify include the United Nations Convention against Torture or Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CAT), the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons against Enforced Disappearances as well as the Rome Stature among others.

To date, Pro Democracy activist, Itai Dzamara who was abducted on 9 March 2015, remains unaccounted for. The occasion of this year’s commemoration of this important day in Zimbabwe offers an opportunity for the Government to expedite the search for Missing persons particularly Itai Dzamara whose search was ordered by the High Court. Abductions remain a gross human rights violation that must be condemned as it is not only degrading but barbaric and a bad practice. Enforced disappearances remain a serious violation of human rights and a crime. Section 53 of the Constitution provides for Freedom from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Such fundamental human rights and freedoms are to be enjoyed by every citizen without selective application.

Judith Makwanya Told She Caused Accident Cause She Is Short Sighted

LONG-SERVING ZBC senior reporter, Judith Makwanya, dragged an alleged errant driver to court after a collision in the Central Business District.

Theophilus Damba pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Harare magistrate Nyasha Vhitorini faced negligent driving.

Prosecuting, Isheanesu Mhiti alleged that on July 23 at the intersection of Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Simon Vengai Muzenda Street, Damba drove his car negligently.

He failed to give way to traffic coming from the right and collided with a Ford Ranger that was being driven by Makwanya.

Damba failed to keep a proper lookout of the road ahead and he also failed to stop or act reasonably when a collision seemed imminent.

Damba denied the charges blaming Makwanya entirely for the accident basing his argument on the fact that Makwanya wears spectacles so she could not see properly causing her to bump into his car.

The matter was remanded to September 14.

Warriors To Face Relatively Inexperienced Congolese Side

Terrence Mawawa| Congo national team coach Valdo Filho has elected to drop some senior players from his provisional squad for the 2019 AFCON Qualifier against Zimbabwe.

The Warriors will travel to Brazzaville for a Group G encounter set for September 9.

According to VOX, at Congolese news website, the Brazilian gaffer said he had to sacrifice some players since they would not adapt to his style of play.

The likes of captain Prince Oniangué and his vice Delvin Ndinga were omitted from the selection together with striker Dylan Saint Louis who plays for French Ligue 2 side, Paris FC. Midfielder Jordan Massengo was also left out because he is currently without a club.

“The choices of a coach are always variously interpreted, but in the end, it is up to him to answer,” Filho said.

“I have players to take but also profiles to look at so that I can implement my philosophy of the game. To get there, I was forced to sacrifice some players.

“There are other absences I’m assuming because my role as a coach is to build a competitive team for the next five games to snatch qualifying for the AFCON 2019 finals. The old and new players are welcome in their national team, but before, everyone must convince me through his club performance, “he added.

The Red Devils are currently on the third position while Zimbabwe lead the group with three points.

Chamisa Raises Flag On The Members Appointed For The August 1 Commission Of Enquiry

By Own Correspondent| The MDC T led by Nelson Chamisa has raised the flag over the independence of members of the Commission of Enquiry appointed to investigate the August 1 2018 ZNA shootings calling on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to change some of the members of the team and its terms of reference.

Below is the full statement by the MDC T:

1.The Zimbabwe constitution recognises the right to life, this includes the right to freedom from torture, intimidation and violence. The constitution is also very clear about the deployment of the military and the use of deadly force, under any circumstances. It also grants the right to freedom of association and expression and is the bases for the establishment and functions of both the military and the police.

2. Following the actions of the military on the 1st of August 2018 and the days that followed, which included leaving up to 11 people dead, 6 of them instantly, a full, impartial and complete investigation of this case is a necessity. It must be remembered that tens of others were injured and hundreds to thousands were displaced, arrested and abused, due to military action.

3. Whilst the appointment of this Commission is welcome in principle, this Commission does not meet basics of any of its kind. It is set up by and meant to benefit a political party and will report back to the person it has investigate. As it stands, the Commission requires changes both in its membership and its terms of reference.

4. Its composition is clearly unbalanced and biased. Charity Manyeruke is a well know ZANU PF cheerleader. The evidence is all over the public domain. Lovemore Madhuku is an interested party as he was a presidential candidate and has already made comments detrimental to the MDC Alliance. He is not a neutral by-stander. Vimbai Nyemba is a Mnangagwa favourite. She has already been appointed as Chairperson of the Procurement Regulatory Authority and is also a member of another Commission of Enquiry into the sale of State land. There is no shortage of suitable persons that one person has to hog multiple positions?

5. These three will ensure that the enquiry produces a predetermined script to smoke our targeted individuals is beyond doubt. Also the value of such an enquiry is doubtful given that we have had commission findings going back to the first years of independence that have never seen the light of day for 38yrs. This is just a publicity stance and public relations gimmick to bolster ED’s image, they know who ordered the army but choose a long-winded route to dupe the world.

6. The terms of reference are designed as a witch-hunt against perceived political threats and any credible opposition to ED’s illegitimacy. Everything points to a clear effort to pin blame on key figures in the opposition as a way to weaken opposition thereby threatening democracy in Zimbabwe.

7. In terms of the foreign members of the commission, we do not know the bases upon which they were selected and their relevant expertise and experiences. Because of this any comment would be immature. We are currently studying their individual profiles and will report back in due course.

8. We therefore demand that the appointing authority consider their own position as a potential subject of investigation as the deploying authority. This should be followed by the addition and refinement of the terms of reference to direct them more pointedly at the problem. The local members and/or the appointing authority should consider recusal from the Commission. Finally, we will make further recommendations, if need be on the individual foreign members.

New Dembare Boss Vows To Weed Out Corrupt Elements

 

Terrence Mawawa|New Dynamos boss Solomon Sanyamandwe has wielded the axe on two executive members, secretary Webster Marechera and treasurer Moses Chikwairo as he seeks to cleanse club’s image.

Sanyamandwe has said it is important that he starts by removing those are an impediment to the revival of the club.

” Yes, the two have been fired. We want to start afresh. We can’t be a new board with the same old people. We don’t want a situation whereby players strike over money issues because we have to explain to the supporters why we are not playing our part when they are playing theirs, ” said Sanyamandwe.

Sanyamandwe last week ordered the auditing of the club’s books as there were a lot of anomalies and misuse of funds.

Financially Troubled Mukupe Seeks Court Mercy On Debts

Outgoing Finance and Economic Development deputy minister, Terrence Mukupe, has petitioned the court seeking to overturn default judgments granted in favour of a local international school and a Chinese-owned construction company compelling him to pay a combined debtof $58 000.

In July this year, Mukupe was slapped with a $30 000 default judgement after the international school petitioned the High Court seeking an order to compel him to settle outstanding tuition fees for his three children.

During the same month, Mukupe was again slapped with yet another default judgment for $28 000 in a matter involving a Chinese company, China Industrial International Group (Pvt) Ltd which had built his property in Harare.

But, in his court applications filed on August 28, 2018, through his lawyers IEG Musimbe and Partners, Mukupe said he was asking the court to rescind the judgments because he settled the debts after being advised by his lawyers well before the default judgments were entered.

“It is my (Mukupe) averment that although summons were served upon me. I did not file an appearance to defend because I had already paid the amount claimed by the respondent (school) in June 2018 directly into respondent’s bank account when I saw a newspaper article about the respondent’s claim,” he said.

“It is my averment that I paid the respondent $30 000 in June 2018…therefore I had extinguished the amount being claimed by the respondent and there was therefore no reason to proceed with claim under case number HC5641/18.
“It is my averment that I have a good case and prospects of success if my side of the story is told, heard and listened to. In the circumstances fairness requires the rescission of the default judgment of July 25, 2018.”

In response to the Chinese-owned construction firm’s debt, Mukupe said he had equally settled the debt and there was no need for the firm to secure a default judgment.

“This is an application for rescission of a default judgment that was granted against the applicant (Mukupe) on July 4, 2018. I only became aware of the judgment on the day it was granted when my legal practitioners attended court to try and avoid default judgment being granted and postponing the matter after seeing a newspaper article as regards the matter,” he said.

The ex-deputy minister said he failed to enter appearance to defend since the said summons was not served on him because of bureaucracy of being moved from one office to another…”

“I submit that I was unable to make payment due to some financial constraints earlier on in the year, however, when I was advised by my legal practitioners of the balance being claimed I made a transfer of $14 000 through my legal practitioners of record to the respondent’s legal practitioners. Therefore, I submit that I have always been willing to pay as evidenced by the fact that I had already paid part of the balance and I intend to clear the balance as soon as possible,” he said.

The matters are still pending.

Terrence Mawawa|Zanu PF MP elect for Chiredzi North Constituency Roy Bhila has said he will fight tooth and nail to block the eviction of illegal settlers from Save Valley Conservancy.

10 000 families – mainly Zanu PF supporters- are illegally occupying the Save Valley Conservancy.

The illegal settlers vandalised the fence around the conservancy and destroyed valuable property.They are also involved in poaching activities.

Bhila said he was prepared to defend the illegal occupants.

” I am ready to defend the settlers because you cannot value wildlife more than human life.I will take all the necessary measures to protect them,” said Bhila.

Bogus CIOs Arrested For Collecting ‘Donations’ For ED Inauguration

 

Terrence Mawawa|Two male adults have been arrested for masquerading as members of the Central Intelligence Organisation.

The pair collected donations- ostensibly for Mnangagwa’ s inauguration.

The two Samson Gurumombe (52) and Brighton Magombo (26) yesterday appeared before Harare
Magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa facing fraud charges.The court heard that the two unlawfully collected
donations from individuals and companies claiming they were intelligence officers.

The court further heard that the two collected cash and fuel coupons from several companies. They were
apprehended after NetOne acting chief executive office Nkosinathi Ncube became suspicious when they repeatedly asked him to make donations.

“MP’s To Be Sworn In Next Week”: Zanu Pf

By Own Correspondent|  Secretary for legal affairs in Zanu Pf, Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana has hinted that legislators will be sworn in next week to pave way for other processes including the announcement of the new cabinet.

Mangwana said currently, government was being run by Mnangagwa and his two deputies, Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, hence the need for swearing-in of MPs as soon as possible so that the President can pick his ministers from them.

He said:

““I understand that swearing-in of MPs-elect will be done next week. After the swearing-in of legislators and the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly and his deputy and the Senate President and the deputy, then the President will select his Cabinet from the MPs and the five that he is allowed by law to select outside parliament.

Monitoring Mnangagwa’s performance by independent analysts is a good exercise. But I think the analysts are a bit too fast because one cannot get married and immediately get pregnant and have a baby. So at the moment there is nothing to monitor as there is no cabinet

In the future we (Zanu PF) will also find a way to monitor and evaluate our performance being guided by the manifesto. Private analysts are also free to do so and to engage government with their critical analysis of our performance from three months, up to the five years

Let us be patient as there is no government at the moment and government is currently composed of the President and his deputies.”-Newsday.

Acting Prosecutor General Probes Judicial Officers Over Wicknell Chivhayo

By Own Correspondent| Acting Prosecutor-General (PG) Kumbirai Hodzi has revealed that he is investigating why judicial officers did not place controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo on remand following his arrest over allegations of swindling the Zimbabwe Power Company of over $5 million.

Chivayo was recently granted $2 000 bail by High Court judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero, who argued that the State’s case was “weak”.

However, acting prosecutor general Hodzi told a local publication that he was investigating the matter.

Said Hodzi:

“I have exercised my constitutional mandate and directed the police to launch a full investigation into the circumstances under which Chivayo and his accomplices were charged, but never placed on remand as the law demanded.

The evidence relating to the two cases has not yet been heard in court. The evidence is compelling and clearly establishes all the essential elements of the crimes committed by the accused persons.

In both cases that involve Chivayo there have been concerns behind the failure to place the accused person on remand, at a time when the evidence uncovered demanded that this be done.”-Newsday.

A Commission Is As Strong As Its Terms Of Reference, Mnangagwa Commision Could Be Biased Already

By Paul Nyathi|President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday announced a seven member commission to investigate the August 1st violence in Harare that ended with seven people dead.

The commission has been given terms of reference that have attracted a huge criticism from members of the public.

Many commentators feel the terms of reference point to the commission concluding that the opposition MDC was responsible for the unfortunate death of the seven innocent citizens.

The Terms of Reference for the Commission are as follows:-

(a) to inquire into the circumstances leading to the 1st of August, 2018 post-election violence;

(b) to identify the actors and their leaders, their motive and strategies employed in the protests;

(c) to inquire into the intervention by the Zimbabwe Republic Police in the maintenance of law and order;

(d) to investigate the circumstances which necessitated the involvement of the military in assisting in the maintenance of law and order;

(e) to consider whether the degree of force used was appropriate to the ensuing threat to public safety, law and order;

(f) to ascertain extent of damage/injury caused thereof;

(g) to investigate any other matters which the Commission of Inquiry may deem appropriate and relevant to the inquiry;

(h) to make suitable recommendations; and

(i) to report to the President in writing, the result of the inquiry within a period of three months from the date of swearing —in of the Commissioners.

Mnangagwa’s Foreign Commissioner Exposed

Opinion By David Coltart|I was at first glance impressed that a Queens Counsel has been included in the Commission of Enquiry into the military shootings of civilians but on further enquiry understand why he has been included. It is such a shame that President Mnangagwa didn’t just choose a panel of people which victims could trust to have an open mind. It would be so much better to have Commissioners who do not have a predilection for the military.

What follows are Rodney Dixon QC’s closing remarks into the enquiry into the Sri Lankan military’s killings of civilians in 2014, which gave enormous cover to that government regarding actions which appalled the human rights community.

“8. Particular attacks and the overall pattern of attacks must fall to be assessed on the particular circumstances at the time and how they would have been known to the commanders charged with the mission of winning (and ending) the war. It is clear that a well-established set of rules under IHL would permit some loss of civilian lives in the specific circumstances of the final phase of the conflict in the Vanni. It may also be argued that the justifiable number of such losses could take account of the opposing party’s unlawful reliance on the civilian population, which in the present case was by all accounts substantial and widespread and likely in the mid- and longer- term to lead to yet more substantial loss of life.

49. It is clear from the above analysis of the law and from authoritative commentary (from the ICRC and from legal authorities of the ICTY and other courts) that assessments of the lawfulness of attacks must take account of the reaction of commanders on the ground to the situations they faced. Post facto, such ‘would-be’ assessments can only be reconstructed by top-level military personnel from countries completely uninvolved in the conflict. This is an exercise those criticising the Government of Sri Lanka have not performed.

Conclusion

50. The conclusions expressed in this Opinion are unavoidably confined by the available evidence about the factual circumstances and are without the benefit of a full investigation into the particular circumstances of each attack.

51. However, the Opinion sets out a legal framework within which the Government forces could have been permitted to act without transgressing the limits of IHL, and against which their actions can be measured in accordance with properly defined legal standards.

52. Any future inquiry, whether by the UN or any other body, is strongly encouraged to draw on this legal framework for its work, and to avoid making findings based on generalised statements about the law that lack rigorous analysis. Similarly unfortunate would be any such inquiry failing to understand the need for calculations to be made of what, for any particular attack, would have been the assessments of the putative reasonable commander in the field.

Death Toll And Arrests Rise In Soweto After Looting Of Foreign-owned Shops.

The death toll following looting of foreign-owned shops in Soweto has risen to three‚ said Gauteng police.

“The community took to the streets in protest‚ which turned violent and led to the looting of foreign nationals’ shops. During the violent attacks and the looting three people were killed in White City. There is also another person in hospital being treated for a gunshot wound‚” Colonel Brenda Muridili said in a statement on Wednesday.

At least 27 people have been arrested.

“Two unlicensed firearms were also seized and more arrests are expected‚” said Muridili.

Lieutenant–Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that two people were arrested for the murders.

“The pair is also charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition,” said Dlamini

The attacks on foreign-owned shops came after allegations that some were selling expired and counterfeit goods.

On Tuesday‚ the health ministry announced that it was looking into the allegations after videos and pictures of allegedly counterfeit products started circulating on social media.

As the looting spread across Soweto‚ Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba and MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg Michael Sun headed to the area.

“Several gun shots went off whilst I’m standing at scene where violence erupted at White City‚ Soweto‚” Sun tweeted.

“Foreigner owned shops completely looted in the area. JMPD and SAPS to intensify efforts to contain the situation‚” he added.

Sun called on shop owners to ensure they had proper stock on their shelves.

“I also urge all shop owners and retailers to immediately remove from their shelves any counterfeit and expired foodstuff or goods. JMPD will continue conducting an operation to rid our community of such ill business practices‚” he said in a statement.

Reports indicate that the attacks continued into the evening on Wednesday.

Dlamini said that they had deployed police in some area around Soweto.

“The situation is clam for now. We have not received reports of any looting taking place anywhere else and we have deployed police to areas considered hotspots to monitor the situation,” he said.

$20 000 For Bedding Another Woman’s Husband

A HWANGE woman is suing her neighbour for $20 000 in damages after she allegedly caught her in bed with her lawfully wedded husband at their matrimonial home.

The aggrieved woman, Ms Melissa Ncube, who is the plaintiff, is accusing Ms Joylyn Change of engaging in an adulterous relationship with her husband Mr Petersen Ncube.

Ms Ncube, through her lawyers Tanaka Law Chambers, filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court citing Ms Change as the defendant.

In papers before the court, Ms Ncube said she caught the two lovers red-handed having sex in her bedroom about three weeks ago.

“On 10 August 2018 at around midnight, the defendant committed adultery with my spouse in our matrimonial home in Hwange. I caught them red-handed and alerted my neighbours who came and witnessed the act,” said Ms Ncube.

Ms Ncube and her husband got married in terms of Chapter 5:11 of the Marriages Act on August 31 in 2001. The couple has two children, a girl and a boy aged 20 and five years respectively.

She said the illicit affair between Ms Change and her husband started in November 2017.

“Defendant and my husband have also publicly showcased their adulterous relationship, appearing in public on various occasions showing off their affection towards each other,” said Ms Ncube.

She said as a result of Ms Change’s actions, she has lost comfort and suffered damages in the form of contumelia (spiteful comments or insults).

“As a result of the adultery, I have lost comfort, society and services of my husband. I also suffered damages for contumelia inflicted upon me,” Ms Ncube said.

Zimbabwe Urged To Bring An End To Enforced Disappearances

Press Statement By ZLHR

ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE VICTIMS OF ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCES TAKE ACTION

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) and Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (The Forum) call on Zimbabwean authorities to take concrete action to prevent future incidents of enforced disappearances, make all perpetrators accountable, compensate and provide all necessary support to survivors and victims of enforced disappearances.

Commemorated on 30 August every year, the United Nations (UN) International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is dedicated to raising awareness that enforced disappearance is a crime. It is also a day to honour victims and survivors of enforced disappearances and a reminder of the ongoing plight of victims, survivors and their families, who need assistance. It is also a day for state and non-state actors to commit to renewed and increased support to help combat enforced disappearances.

On this day, ZLHR and The Forum stand in solidarity with all victims, survivors of enforced disappearances, and their families and calls on the government to take concrete action to ensure that all those affected access effective remedies which they are entitled to. ZLHR and The Forum also reiterate that the government has an obligation to take action to ensure that the disappeared are accounted for. Further, victims and survivors also have a right to know what happened and who was responsible, and access to relevant support that facilitates the process of healing.

ZLHR and The Forum are particularly concerned that the deplorable practice of enforced disappearances has not been criminalised as a standalone crime in Zimbabwe. It is disheartening that the government rejected a recommendation made by other UN member states encouraging Zimbabwe to ratify the United Nations Convention for the Protection of all Persons Against Enforced Disappearances. This recommendation has been proposed by other UN member states since 2011 and again in March 2017 during the UN Human Rights Council-led Universal Periodic Review Mechanism sessions. The government of Zimbabwe has unfortunately not yet accepted this recommendation.

This recommendation if accepted, domesticated and fully implemented will go a long way towards eradicating the pervasive practice of enforced disappearances.

It is saddening that human rights campaigners among them Itai Dzamara, Patrick Nabanyama and Paul Chizuze remain missing and unaccounted for after they were subjected to enforced disappearances several years ago. ZLHR and The Forum condemn the lack of progress in investigating enforced disappearances of Dzamara, Chizuze and Nabanyama and punishing those responsible. It is also very disheartening that the victims and survivors of the disappearances that occurred in the 1980s in Matabeleland are yet to access effective remedies or interact with meaningful transitional justice processes. Those responsible for disappearing these citizens have committed a heinous crime under international law.

ZLHR and The Forum call on government to;

1. Fully embrace the recommendations to ratify and domesticate the United Nations Convention for the Protection of all Persons Against Enforced Disappearances.
2. Introduce required institutional and legislative reforms for the protection of all persons from enforced disappearances.
3. Criminalise enforced disappearances.
4. Ensure that the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission has required resources to institute processes for victims, survivors of those disappeared to access effective remedies and other necessary support.
5. Eradicate impunity for perpetrators of enforced disappearances and ensure full accountability of all perpetrators and guarantee redress and rehabilitation to victims.

Chamisa Says He Will Never Give Room To Be Swallowed By The Crocodile

OPPOSITION MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has ruled out any coalition deal with his Zanu PF nemesis President Emmerson Mnangagwa for fear of being “sunk and swallowed” the same way his late predecessor Morgan Tsvangirai was politically manipulated during the Government of National Unity era.

Chamisa told South African broadcaster SABC on Tuesday night that his supporters had warned him to reject any overtures from Mnangagwa, lest he would sink his party.

“We must be able to protect the vote, otherwise we will not be able to convince anyone to go to elections five years down the line. Our people have said ‘Mr Chamisa, don’t work with these people’.

“They are saying don’t join hands with the Crocodile (Mnangagwa’s moniker), you will be drowned’ like what happened to president Tsvangirai when he worked with (former President) Robert Mugabe, he was diluted, we were diluted, we ended up losing focus and manipulated out of power,” Chamisa said.

Chamisa however, said Zanu PF had not yet formally approached him for coalition talks.

“There has not been any official approach,” he said.
Zanu PF secretary for legal affairs Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana also said he was not aware of any discussions between Chamisa and Mnangagwa, but could not rule out the possibility of talks between the protagonists.

Last week, soon after Mnangagwa was declared winner of the July 30 polls by the Constitutional Court, he publicly admitted that Chamisa had a role to play in the development of the country after the opposition leader declared that the Zanu PF front-man had no capacity to steer the country out of the murky waters over the next five years.

Chamisa reiterated his position on Tuesday, saying: “Far from my fate being sealed. In any event it’s not about Chamisa, it’s about the people of Zimbabwe, they voted for a particular choice, but they were cheated. They were deceived, but that deception is not going to last forever. We have the authority. This country belongs to the people. That is why I told you that there is going to be a proper inauguration very soon. New Zimbabwe is coming, you will see it.”

He warned of a “people’s revolution in Zimbabwe” similar to the mass protests that led to Mugabe’s ouster last November.

“The people of Zimbabwe will ultimately take destiny in their own hands. You remember what happened with Mr Mugabe in November. Did you foresee that?

“I am not saying you will see the same, but there are many unforeseables in circumstances where the people want their freedom. The Constitution actually supports revolutions that is why it calls for demonstrations that are peaceful.”

Hotel Names And Shames Schweppes Zimbabwe On Social Media

By Paul Nyathi|High profiled Leopard Rock Hotel of Mutare has steered business diplomacy after naming and shaming beverage manufacturing giant Schweppes Zimbabwe over a last minute booking cancellation.

Speaking on their official Facebook page, the hotel published that Schweppes had caused them over $15000 loss after a last minute cancellation of a weekend booking of 35 rooms.

“Our loss is your gain!!Schweppes have cancelled a booking for 35 rooms this weekend minutes ago. Weekend SPECIAL – 20% discount on all rates,” screamed the hotel on the Facebook page.

Probed by followers and customers on their motive to name and shame the company, the hotel management claimed that this was the second such cancellation by the popular Mazoe Orange Crush beverage manufacturing company.

“This was the second time Schweppes canceled their booking. Because of their high profile we accepted their booking and they confirmed. Canceling a booking for 35 rooms a mere two days prior is what is truly unprofessional and hurtful to business,” the hotel responded.

“They insisted on holding their conference over the weekend, asked and received a discount and cancelled having not paid as promised. We turned away 40 rooms as a result. Naming and shaming a customer that causes thousands of dollars was the only way to ensure this matter is seen by the superiors of those involved.”

Responding on the probable lack of business ethics on naming and shaming the company, the hotel expressed its frustrations with Schweppes Zimbabwe claiming they are prepared to lose potential future business than allow “big business” to manipulate them.

“I happen to be the owner,” wrote the person behind the hotel Facebook page.

“I decided I would rather take the risk and lose business than allow a company or specific employees to use their name to run rough shod over us and cause us to lose money and jobs. We lost $15,000 in business. I don’t need customers who think that is ok or proper behavior. PS they have never given us their business.”

ZimEye.com could not immediately get a comment from Schweppes Zimbabwe on the backlash by the hotel.

109-Year-Old Woman Says Avoiding Men Is The Secret To A Long Life

With 109 years of life, Jessie Gallan was officially the oldest woman in Scotland. Recently, she revealed the secret for longevity, which is surprisingly funny and simple.

Namely, if you want to live a long and healthy life, she recommends eating porridge for breakfast every day and, most importantly, start avoiding men.

That’s right. It turns out that the secret to long life has been hiding in men this whole time. Or, to be more precise, it has been hiding away from men.

The 109-year-old has been independent her whole life. She has worked hard since she has been a teenager. Gallan has left her home when she has been only 13 and she had to earn for living alone. She continued working hard for her living her whole life and she never married.

“I worked hard and seldom would I ever take a holiday,” Gallan says.

In the interview for Daily Mail she talks about her life before and after turning 100.

“She’s absolutely amazing,” a caregiver at Gallan’s nursing home said.

Unfortunately, Gallan passed away in Scotland soon after giving the interview.

The birthday boy being a prominent lawyer, businessman and also a popular figure on the capital’s social scene: his party was characterised by glitz and glam which saw him wash his hands using $300 worth of champagne.

Chimombe, who is a nephew to millionaire businessman Philip Chiyangwa is also the Affirmative Action Group’s president for Mashonaland West Chapter, is not shy of flaunting his wealth when the opportunity presents itself.

ZANU PF To Increase Presidential Age Limit, Claims Chamisa Is Immature.

The ruling ZANU-PF has warned that it will consider using its majority in Parliament to effect a constitutional amendment raising the presidential age limit to ensure only what it calls mature people to contest for the highest office in the land.

The Constitution currently stipulates that for one to be elected President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, they must be 40 years and above.

Zanu-PF National Secretary for Security Lovemore Matuke told state media that the ruling party will seriously consider raising the age limit following what he claims were immaturity traits exposed by forty year old losing MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa.

“We are seriously considering to use our parliamentary majority to effect a constitutional amendment raising the age limit for election to the Office of the President because we are now worried about what immature people like Chamisa are doing,” said Matuke.

“They are holding the country to ransom and we feel it is to some extent because of immaturity and childishness. When a person goes for an election, they must be prepared for all the outcomes – win, lose or a stalemate. It is a sign of immaturity for a person to expect only to win in an election and as a result we feel there is need to have a serious relook at the presidential age limit.’’

Matuke said Chamisa risked being a national security threat.

“A mature person would have allowed the country to move on,” he said. “Congratulate the winner and say there is always a next time. This country has been bleeding economically for too long and all patriotic Zimbabweans should put their shoulders to the wheel to rebuild this country, which has been battered by sanctions and, surprisingly, there are still people who are immature not to see the need for all that.”

Mnangagwa’s Commission To Punish Chamisa for Chiwenga’s Military Brutality

Below is a series of tweets by the exiled Prof Jonathan Moyo exposing ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa’s commission of inquiry into the August 1st shootings:

Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed a Commission of Inquiry to inquire into “The Post-Election Violence on the First of August 2018”. While some, like Theresa May (British Prime Minister), who has made her views known, will see this as a pledge well kept, there are FOUR fundamental wrongs with the Commission!

So the first fundamental wrong is that by acting like a King, Mnangagwa has violated s110(3) of the Constitution. He can’t appoint a Commission of this nature without the advice of Cabinet & without a responsible minister to oversee the Commission & facilitate its work!

And to the four wrongs. First, it is fundamentally wrong for Mnangagwa to appoint such a Commission before appointing a Cabinet whose advice was necessary in terms of the Constitution. Mnangagwa, who stole the election, thinks he can do decrees like a King; just like that!

It’s very clear that one of Mnangagwa’s major reasons for rushing to appoint this Commission, without a Cabinet in place, is to fix Chiwenga, with the help of @CatrionaLaing1, to weaken his hand in cabinet selection & to later oust him. Chiwenga is certainly on the ropes!

The third thing that is fundamentally wrong with the Commission is that its terms of reference, whose authorship is unknown, are accusatory when they should be open ended for fact-finding purposes. This renders the terms of reference to be self-discrediting & thus political!

The first term of reference says: “to inquire into the circumstances leading to the 1st of August, 2018 post-election violence”. How about the Harare Massacre & the subsequent 10 day siege of townships where residents were brutally tortured & some abducted by the Army? Smh!

The second term of reference says “to identify the actors & their leaders, their motive & strategies employed in the protests”. How about the need to identify the soldiers who bayoneted, beat up, tortured civilians or shot them in the back; their strategies & orders? Please!

The second fundamentally wrong thing are the Commission’s terms of reference. Whose are they? Who drafted them? Mnangagwa? @CatrionaLaing1? UK govt? When @theresa_may praised Mnangagwa on the Commission in SA yesterday, did she know something that Zimbabweans did not know?

 

Term of reference (d) on page 2 says “to investigate the the circumstances which NECESSITATED the involvement of the military in assisting in the maintenance of law & order”. Who says the involvement of the military was NECESSARY? This term of reference is a conclusion!

It’s notable that while Mnangagwa’s chief election agent, Ziyambi Ziyambi, barred @AdvDali_Mpofu & his colleagues from representing @nelsonchamisa in the ConCourt on xenophobic grounds that they are aliens, Mnangagwa has appointed a Commission whose majority are foreigners!

The fourth fundamentally wrong thing with the Commission is that its terms of reference do not address the loss of life in the Harare Massacre. Term of reference (f) refers to “extent of damage/injury”. This is outrageous. It’s criminal… Mnangagwa is mad!

 

So Mnangagwa’s Commission is unconstitutional. It’s composition is a scratch-my-back I scratch-your-back affair. And its terms of reference are political & corrupt. In effect, the Commission is not designed to achieve justice; which is the cry of the victims & the people.

Mnangagwa To Hurriedly Appoint His Deputies

Contrary to speculations that Mnangagwa might drop the sickly Kembo Mohadi and replace him with Simon Khaya Moyo, the President is expected to retain the two current Vice Presidents as they are.

ZimEye.com sources close to the office of the President indicated that Mnangagwa has however not yet finalised his cabinet as there are serious tensions within the ruling party top leadership on who to include in the list.

The sources indicated that the party is yet again returning to factionalism with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga beginning to lead a group of anti Mnangagwa members.

The delays in appointing the cabinet means that the country is functioning without substantive ministers as all the current ministers stopped functioning when Mnangagwa was sworn in as the new President last Sunday.

3. Party president is authorised to engage all stakeholders in dialogue with the scope of dealing with the current impasse arising from a stolen election and to resolve related governance issues.

 

4. President Chamisa is authorised to put into effect an earlier resolution to integrate Alliance partners into the MDC 5.

War Vets Get New Cars

Zanu-PF yesterday handed over vehicles to provincial chairpersons of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) in fulfilment of the party’s commitment to improving their welfare.

The vehicles were handed over to the war vets chairpersons by Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Obert Mpofu at the party headquarters in Harare.

Mpofu, who is also the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, said the war veterans should never think they were being ignored as the party was making efforts to secure their vehicles.

“Never ever think you will be ignored because of your role, you are an affiliate of the party,” he said. “Affiliate doesn’t mean you are a lesser component of the party. You are the main component of the party when it comes to the liberation of this country.

“The policies of this country and the commitment that you made during the struggle to bring this country to where it is, so we were trying to mobilise some resources to secure vehicles for you.”

Mpofu appealed to the war veterans to keep the brand markings on the vehicles and that they should not shy away from their identity, Zanu-PF.

“But all these vehicles are branded, I understand some comrades thought this branding will compromise their work, no, Zanu-PF is in power, Zanu-PF is Government,” he said.

“The Government that is there is a Zanu-PF Government, so we should not shy away from our identity. We are appealing to you to keep those brands there.

I have just been speaking to HE (President Mnangagwa) now about that.
“He said, no, look here, those brands have to be there because the property belongs to the party and if we are not happy with those brands, I think the cars should be brought back so that we decide on what type of vehicle we can give you which does not associate you with the party, Zanu-PF.”

Mpofu said the vehicles were meant to make it easy for the war vets chairpersons to mobilise people in their respective provinces.

He urged them not to abuse the vehicles, especially by conducting their private business using them.

“So, comrades these are your vehicles and they are meant to make it easy for you to mobilise people in your respective areas, but they should not be abused on private business because people would be seeing that it is a party vehicle,” said Mpofu.

“If you start abusing it, doing things that people will see, that is against the party; we should avoid that. Let’s respect this property, look after it and what we do in the party is that after five years you may own it, it will be yours.

“So if you abuse it, we will take it away from you. So, we don’t want to do that. Keep it as if it’s yours because it will be yours eventually.”

Mpofu appealed to the war veterans to remain disciplined and united as an association.
He said the chairpersons had a role to play in uniting people in their provinces, especially some war veterans who had formed some splinter groups.

“You chairpersons should unite people in your provinces,” he said. “Bring every war veteran to you because this is the only association that is registered in the party. There are others who are trying to form some reactionary splinter groups, please bring them back to the fold. The proper war veterans association is this one.”

Mpofu said so far the party had distributed more than 400 vehicles that it had purchased for members.

He said whatever President Mnangagwa had promised, it will be fulfilled and delivered.

ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya assured Mpofu that the vehicles would be put to good use.

Traffic Cop Spotted With Loads Of Cash: ZRP Says Nothing Wrong With “Clean” Money

By Own Correspondent| An unidentified traffic cop was spotted by shoppers in Bulawayo city centre loading bulk notes of US dollars and local bond notes into a bag.

He was being assisted to fill the bag by two cellphone dealers at a flea market stall.

According to sources who witnessed  what transpired, the policeman walked into the flea market casually as if it was his modus operandi.

However, the money (American dollars and local bond notes) were too much to ignore and the witness captured it using his smart phone.

Said the witness:

“I saw the police officer talking to the two gentlemen after a few minutes he gave them his bag and they took out huge blocks of money and started putting them in the bag. I was stunned because the money was a lot.

I took out my phone and started recording, after a while the three became suspicious and I swiftly walked away.”

Early this week the Officer-in-Charge at Plumtree Police Station, Inspector Ginger Vhiyano and six subordinates appeared in court in connection with missing gold worth US$1 million which was allegedly stolen at the police station. The gold had been kept under police guard as exhibit relating to a smuggling case.

Bulawayo Metropolitan police spokesperson Chief Inspector Precious Simango however said there was nothing wrong with the policeman’s actions especially if the money was “clean”.

Said Simango:

“It is not a crime for a police officer to be spotted counting money in public except if there is evidence that one is involved in a dirty deal.”

PM May Praised ED On August Violence Evades Rigged Elections

The Junta may well have gotten away with calling last November’s military coup a “military assisted transition” but it is not getting away with calling a blatantly rigged election “free, fair and credible!” writes Patrick Guramatunhu.

He believes that what transpired before, during and after the July 30 elections was a far cry from Mnangagwa’s promise of a free, fair and credible election.

Writes Guramatunhu in his opinion piece titled “PM T May praised ED “inquiry into August violence” and avoided rigged elections – extra hot chilli dish.”

No fewer than 50 nations or institution were in Zimbabwe to observe the country’s recent elections. President Mnangagwa promised to hold free, fair and credible elections, a far cry from what happened.

Many nations have not yet produced their official reports on the elections; their silence has said volumes, it is now nearly a month since voting day. One notable exception was China who gave their thumbs up but then what do they know about free, fair and credible elections!

The British Prime Minister, Mrs Theresa May, who is visiting SA, chose to speak about President Mnangagwa’s promise to investigate the wanton violence following the street protests in Harare on 1st August.

When she was pressed on the recent elections, she again pointedly avoided answering the question.

“The President is an elected President, and he is making an important step in saying he is setting up a commission of inquiry into what has happened in relation to the violence,” said British Prime Minister, Mrs Theresa May. She was speaking on SA’s eNCA television.

“I think that is a very important signal from him about the Zimbabwe he wants to see for the future, and the Zimbabwe that is taking opportunities for the future of its people.”

It is the reaction of the Zanu PF apologists that has been telling.

“Our elections were free, fair and credible, which no one in his/her rightful mind can criticise and the legitimacy of the election of President Mnangagwa can, therefore, not be questioned,” said political analyst Mr Gabriel Chaibva, in a Chronicle report.

The guilty need no accuser! Chaibva is fuming and frothing at the mouth defending an indefensible position!

Like everyone else, PM May would have been astonished to hear that ZEC failed to produce a clean and verified voters’ roll, for example; a must have in any election and a legal requirement in Zimbabwe. She then heard of 16 polling stations in which two or more neighbouring stations had exactly the same number of ballots cast and President Mnangagwa had received exactly the same votes.

One does not need a degree in mathematics or anything to know these were bussed voters casting multiple votes. The reason why ZEC had refused to release a verified voters’ roll is immediately obvious, it would have been the smoking gun to the blatant vote rigging taking place!

Even if nations like Britain never come out and openly condemn the flawed and illegal elections in Zimbabwe, choosing to dwell on the side issues such as the 1st August violence; their silence has said it all.

The foreign investors and lenders KNOW the elections were rigged.

Zimbabwe needs the investors to kick start her comatose economy. President Mnangagwa has underlined this with his all out “Zimbabwe is open for business!” carrion call. Sadly, the much hoped for flood of investors will never happen because investors do not do business in pariah state ruled by vote rigging thugs!

The investors will never be fooled into believing Zimbabwe is a democracy when they can see with their own eyes the blatant vote rigging and thuggery!

The Zanu PF junta may well have gotten away with calling last November’s military coup a “military assisted transition” but it is not getting away with calling a blatantly rigged election “free, fair and credible!”

You can fool the blind on fufu (cassava or yam) but not on extra hot chilli in the relish.

Mnangagwa Explains Logic Of Including Foreigners In August 1 Harare Shooting Commission Of Enquiry

By Own Correspondent| President Emmerson Mnangagwa has explained the logic of including foreigners as part of the Commission tasked with investigating the August 1 2018 violence saying that the foreigners had been ropped in to ensure transparency.

Mnangagwa, who is on record saying the Commission would be independent said the inclusion of the foreigners in the 7 member team was also premised on the fact that the violence occurred in full glare of the media.

Addressing journalists at his Munhumutapa offices Wednesday afternoon, Mnangagwa said the foreigners would be residing in Harare and they would be sworn in as soon as he comes back from China.

Said Mnangagwa in his statement:

“The Commission is made up of local, regional and international members who have been appointed in terms of the Commission of Enquiry Act Chapter 10:07.

The Commission among other tasks will look into the intervention of the ZRP in the violence, investigate the involvement of the military, consider the degree of force used and establish the extent of the damage or injury caused thereof.”

Trigger-Happy Cops Shoot Passenger At Roadblock

 

Terrence Mawawa| Trigger happy ZRP cops allegedly shot and injured a passenger after the driver of the vehicle she was traveling in had failed to stop.

The police are reported to have shot 30-year-old Loveness Chiriseri after the Honda Fit she was travelling in failed to stop at the roadblock.

The roadblock was mounted along Seke Road near St Marys in Chitungwiza.

Chiriseri said the police officer fired two shots, one of which hit her backside.

” I don’t know where the other shot
went, but the second hit the car seat
and my right side…The police are
behaving like nothing happened. I am
paying for my medical bills and they
have not even made an effort to find
out what happened to me. I am
suffering emotionally and financially
owing to the actions of a trigger-happy police officers,” Chiriseri told a daily paper.

The driver of the vehicle was Lloyd Sibanda was arrested and charged with failure to comply with police instructions.

Senior Intelligence Officer Dies In Road Accident

A senior intelligence officer has succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident.

The senior intelligence officer, Austin Peter Moyo died on Sunday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a car accident last week. He was 62.

“We have lost a great mind and hero
who was ready to sacrifice everything for the liberation of this country. As an intelligence officer, Cde Moyo never forgot where he came from and served the party faithfully until his demise…

By Own Correspondent| President Emmerson Mnangagwa has tasked a 7 member “independent” commission to investigate the August 1 2018 military shootings which left 7 people dead and 14 others injured in post election violence which rocked Harare’s central business district.

The violence followed delays in the announcement of the 2018 presidential election results by the Zimbabwe Electoral Ccommission (ZEC) and protestors took to the streets before the army was unleashed on them and they fired live bullets killing and injuring innocent by standers.

President Mnangagwa revealed this at a press conference at his Munhumutapa offices in Harare (Wednesday) afternoon.

Chairing the Commission is South Africa’s former President Kgalema Motlanthe, Retired Tanzanian Army General Davis Mwamunyange, University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Charity Manyeruke, Former Commonwealth Secretary General Emeka Anyaoku, UK based lawyer Rodney Dixon, former president of the Zimbabwe Law Society Vimbai Nyemba and University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Lovemore Madhuku.

Some of the key tasks of the commission include to identify the leaders of the protestors who instigated the violence, enquire into the intervention by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, investigate the intervention by the military and assess the damages of the violence among others.

The Commission is expected to have finished their work within 3 months.

STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT, COMRADE E.D. MNANGAGWA, ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY TO INQUIRE INTO THE POST-ELECTION VIOLENCE ON THE FIRST OF AUGUST 2018.

Fellow Zimbabweans, following the post-election disturbing events of the 1st of August, 2018, which resulted in the loss of lives, and damage to property, I wish to announce to the nation that;

(i) In fulfilment of what I have earlier on undertaken to do, in order to address the matter in a transparent manner and in the public interest, I have appointed a seven-member Commission to inquire into the post-election violence.

(ii) The Commission is made up of Local, Regional and International members who have been appointed in terms of the Commission of Inquiry Act [Chapter 10:07].
The Terms of Reference for the Commission are as follows:-

(a) to inquire into the circumstances leading to the 1st of August, 2018 post-election violence;

(b) to identify the actors and their leaders, their motive and strategies employed in the protests;

(c) to inquire into the intervention by the Zimbabwe Republic Police in the maintenance of law and order;

(d) to investigate the circumstances which necessitated the involvement of the military in assisting in the maintenance of law and order;

(e) to consider whether the degree of force used was appropriate to the ensuing threat to public safety, law and order;

(f) to ascertain extent of damage/injury caused thereof;

(g) to investigate any other matters which the Commission of Inquiry may deem appropriate and relevant to the inquiry;

(h) to make suitable recommendations; and

(i) to report to the President in writing, the result of the inquiry within a period of three months from the date of swearing —in of the Commissioners.

The following members will constitute the Commission of Inquiry:

Former President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Kgalema Motlanthe;
Rodney Dixon QC, United Kingdom;
Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Federal Republic of Nigeria;

Kgalema Motlanthe To Chair Mnangagwa Shooting Commission

President Mnangagwa who is the Commander In Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces has previously expressed ignorance on who deployed the soldiers into the streets with live ammunition against unarmed citizens.

The commander of the defence forces Valerio Sibanda also excluded himself from the order releasing soldiers into the streets.

A South African farmer has taken that country’ s government to court over a land dispute.

According to a South African television channel, the farmer from Stellenbosch has approached the High
Court in Cape Town to have illegal land invaders removed from his farm in Watergang.

In Zimbabwe 4000 white commercial were violently displaced by Zanu PF supporters at the height of the land grab exercise at the turn of the millennium.

The ruling ANC party in South Africa has stressed the need to correct the land distribution pattern.

Mnangagwa Offers State Assisted Funeral For GMB Explosion Victims

By Paul Nyathi|PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has directed that four workers who died in an explosion at a Grain Marketing Board depot in Mashonaland West on Tuesday be granted state assisted burials.

The explosion whose cause is yet to be ascertained left three other people seriously injured. Mnangagwa also said the injured will get assistance.

“I have already instructed relevant Government arms to ensure that appropriate state assistance is extended to all those caught up in the explosion,” said Mnangagwa.

“In addition, I have directed that all silos in the country immediately undergo safety checks, and that necessary remedial and preventive measures be promptly undertaken and instituted in order to avert any such mishaps now and in the future.”

Mnangagwa paid tribute to rescue workers who attended to the explosion.

“On behalf of the party, Zanu-PF, Government and on my own personal behalf, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the families which have lost their loved ones. I wish speedy recovery to all those injured in the valiant rescue efforts that followed the explosion,” he said.

“Our nation applauds those brave souls who put their own lives at risk in a bid to help the trapped workers.”

The explosion at GMB Lions Den Chinhoyi – An explanation of the likely cause

By Dr. Paul Stanford Kupakuwana| It was sad to learn about the GMB workers killed in Lions Den silo explosions. In the absence of the full knowledge on what exactly happened, I have decided to share information on why dust explosions occur (with the hope that it will help ease the investigation.)

Dust explosions happen when combustible dust with the correct particle size forms a cloud of concentration in air. This dust is known as ‘explosible.’ Combustible specks of dust include some commonly found materials, such as sugar, milk powder, coal, and grain. Dust explosions can occur in processes where there are specks of dust handled, such as grain silos, extraction systems, spray dryers and material transfer systems. The following conditions are needed for clouds of dust to become explosible:

• Particle size – combustible dust must have a fine enough particle size to sufficiently increase the surface area;
• Dispersal – the dust must be in a combustible mixture in the air;
• Explosive concentrations – unlike flammable vapours, specks of dust do not have a defined Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) and Upper Explosive Limit (UEL), but as an indicative value, the LEL would be 25-50g per cubic metre of air, with UEL ten times the LEL. At these concentrations, the dust cloud would be substantial and apparent;
• Ignition energy – there is minimum ignition energy (MIE) required to ignite the dust. This data is usually available for each dust and is critical in the assessment of explosion risk;
• Heat and humidity – high temperatures can increase the risk of dust explosion as the hot surface can ignite the dust if they provide the MIE. High humidity (damping down), on the other hand, can reduce the likelihood of a dust explosion as dust clouds do not form as readily, and a greater MIE is needed to ignite the dust.

For a fire to start, the fire triangle is essential: heat, fuel and oxygen are needed. To create the conditions for a dust explosion, the ‘dust pentagon’ considers heat, fuel, oxygen, confinement of the dust (e.g. enclosing the dust within a building or silo) and dispersion of the dust (formation of the dust cloud).

As we can see, the conditions needed for dust explosions to occur are prescribed clearly. It is unusual for such conditions, e.g. explosive concentrations of dust, to be present in the general atmosphere as these would, at a fundamental level, need to be controlled for operator exposure and health issues. As a result, most dust explosions happen within processes or equipment where conditions for the explosion can be achieved more readily. These explosions are known as ‘primary explosions.’ The primary explosion can be quite minor, but the dust disturbed within the building or silo (e.g., on the floor, girders, lying on vessels, etc.) then forms an explosible mixture and is ignited, causing one or more secondary explosions that can be devastating.

Housekeeping and dust control are, therefore, essential in an area where process specks of dust are generated. It is essential that the conditions needed for an explosion are understood and the potential assessed so that controls can be implemented to prevent a dust explosion. This mitigation will occur through the development of a robust risk assessment process.

Opinion: Why U.K Should Not Recognise Zimbabwe Election Results

Opinion By British Politician Kate Hoey|Over the last few weeks I have escaped from the doom mongers of the zealot Remainers and their dire warnings about life after Brexit to concentrate on the elections in Zimbabwe.

At the beginning of June along with Conor Burns MP I spent time in Harare and Bulawayo on behalf of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK branch to report on the likelihood of a free and fair election on July 3oth.

We met with a wide range of people from Government, opposition political parties, business and civil society as well as speaking to Zimbabweans going about their daily life both in Harare and Bulawayo.

It is worth remembering that elections in Zimbabwe since 2002 have been both violent and rigged. In 2008, the ZEC took more than 5 weeks to declare a result and more than 270 activists, almost all belonging to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) were killed. The last national polls in 2013 were relatively peaceful but internationally regarded as rigged. There was gross manipulation of the voters roll in favour of rural voters where Zanu PF have the greatest support.

Without doubt there was a different atmosphere in Zimbabwe. Gone were the police and army on the streets. Indeed the once common police road blocks where drivers had to hand over money were virtually non-existent. The ousting of Mugabe last year by the military led to hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans coming out onto the streets to celebrate. The feeling that change had happened was widespread and overall there was an optimism amongst the general public that this would continue. The most common remark of the ‘man/woman on the street was “We want real change”! There was huge anticipation about change coming in the election.

But throughout common concerns about the election were expressed to us – the electoral roll being rigged; Military imbedded out of uniform in the rural areas; fear of reprisals as happened last time when the vote showed ZanuPF had not been supported. The failure to ensure access to the state media by the opposition and particularly in the countryside where people relied only on state radio. Virtually no coverage of the huge Nelson Chamisa (Leader of the MDC Alliance) rally’s on state television and radio

The main roads leading into Bulawayo and Harare were awash with large billboards and posters of Mnangagwa and there is little doubt that the blurring of the state with Zanu PF meant huge extra resources for ZanuPF. The MDC Alliance had not got the resources to even start to compete with the Governing Party. Virtually no-one felt the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission was independent of Government but hopes were high that despite all this and particularly with the presence of international observers there could still be a free and fair election.

On election day there were huge queues to vote and the turn out was the highest ever. At the polling stations the results were posted outside and the count was done for Parliament at the same time as the Presidential election. Yet it took 4 days for the Presidential result to be announced and then Mnangagwa was declared the winner and with 0.8 per cent more than was needed for a run off. The opposition have identified massive discrepancies in the vote—one example is in Mashonaland central where by 5pm 150,000 people had voted but in the next two hours until polls closed ZEC said 300,000 people voted!! Just one of many outrageous fixes by ZEC.

Without doubt the election has been cleverly rigged but even worse is the fact that it is the military that is behind the regime and they are now unleashing a similar fear and terror campaign on leading opposition activists and curbing all protests by killing and arresting innocent Zimbabweans.

The courage and self sacrifice of the Zimbabwean people is humbling to behold. We,in the international community cannot accept the result of the election and the Uk government must take a lead to ensure that the Zimbabwean government is seen for what it is a mark 2 Mugabe regime and one that deserves no support whatsoever.

Zanu Pf Backtracks On Mugabe, Wishes Him Well

By Own Correspondent| Zanu Pf has warmed up to former president Robert Mugabe wishing him a speedy recovery following his congratulatory message to President Emmerson Mnangagwa at his inauguration last Sunday.

Mugabe, who earlier on attracted ridicule from Zanu Pf stalwarts and was labelled a traitor for “endorsing opposition leader Nelson Chamisa a day before the July 30 elections” revealed that he was not well and could not attend Mnangagwa’s inauguration.

In a letter read at the inauguration ceremony, Mnangagwa revealed the circumstances leading to the absence of Mugabe at the event.

“I am not well….. but I have sent my daughter (Bona) and her husband (Simba Chikore) to represent me and my wife. Hearty congratulations.” read part of the letter.

The party on its official Twitter handle wished Mugabe a speedy recovery adding that President Mnangagwa would ensure that he gets the best medical care he deserved.

He however sent his daughter Bona and her husband Simba Chikore to represent him adding that he sent “hearty congratulations” to his former lieutenant who was sworn into office after being declared winner of the July 30 2018 elections by the Constitutional court last Friday.

Mnangagwa was inaugurated at a packed National Sports Stadium in Harare at an event attended by several African Heads of States including South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Zambia’s Edgar Lungu and Botswana’s Mogkweetsi Masisi among others.

“There Is No Post Election Violence But Peace”: ZRP

By Own Correspondent| Police chief spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has dismissed as false allegations of post election violence in especially the private media adding that there was peace and tranquillity in Zimbabwe.

In an interview with a local publication, Assistant Commissioner Charamba said the Zimbabwe Republic Police had investigated all the alleged cases of politically motivated violence and established that they were unfounded.

“Investigations carried out so far have revealed that there are no threats and intimidation on anyone.

As police we would also want to reiterate that the people should report to the police if they are intimidated.

Police made investigations into these reports and interviewed the MDC Alliance Muzarabani Constituency chairperson Jaface Mufira who resides in ward 20. He stated that he was unaware of that information and that there were no threats of violence in the area.

Police also interviewed the MDC Alliance ward 20 councillor contestant Steven Sado, who said he had not been intimidated or threatened by anyone up to now.

Currently there is peace in Muzarabani and maybe the authors of these false messages want to cause mayhem.”-StateMedia.

Biti Drags ZRP To The High Court Over Impounded Vehicle

By Own Correspondent| MDC Alliance co-principal, Tendai Biti has filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court, seeking an order for the release of his Toyota Landcruiser from Southerton Police Station, which he claimed was impounded by unknown men from his grandmother’s house in Greendale last month.

The order was filed on August 27 2018 and Biti cites the officer-in-charge (OIC) Southerton Police Station, Chief Superintendent Nyabasa and the Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga as respondents.

In his narration of events, Biti said about a month ago, four men in a black Toyota Hilux went to his grandmother’s Greendale home and enquired about a Toyota Landcruiser that was parked in the yard.

Biti alleged that the domestic worker told the unknown men that Biti had parked it and that he was not using it on that particular day.

Biti claimed the men returned to the house the same day with a tow-truck and demanded that the gates to his grandmother’s residence be opened.

Biti says he wrote a letter to Chief Superintendent Nyabasa and copied to the first respondent but both refused to sign, stating the matter was out of their hands.

Top Mnangagwa CIO Dies

By Own Correspondent| A top CIO in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s office who was also a war veteran, Austin Peter Moyo has died.

Moyo died at Mpilo hospital in Bulawayo on Sunday due to injuries sustained after he was involved in an accident last Tuesday. He was 62.

Moyo, whose war name was Madayiza, was described as a humble and loyal cadre who served his party Zanu Pf to the end.

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Minister Angeline Masuku visited Moyo’s family in Cowdray Park suburb to relay her condolence message.

She described Moyo as a hard working officer who had also served Zanu-PF.

“We have lost a great mind and hero who was ready to sacrifice everything for the liberation of this country.

“As an intelligence officer, Moyo never forgot where he came from and served the party faithfully until his demise,” said Minister Masuku.

“We kindly ask the Moyo family to be patient and bear with us as we await communication from the higher officers regarding his burial.

“We all know that he worked hard and deserves to be honoured.”

Mr Edward Nare, the Moyo family spokesperson said the late Moyo was a sociable and humble intelligence officer.

“We are pained because we lost a humble and hardworking man who lost his wife two years go. We will remember his jolly mood and he never bullied or threatened anyone in the community as an intelligence officer,” said Mr Nare.

He said Moyo’s situation deteriorated on Saturday though he had shown signs of recovery.

“My nephew was involved in a car accident last week on Tuesday and was admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital.

“He sustained internal injuries and doctors say his liver was seriously damaged during the accident which caused his death,” he said.

Moyo is survived by four children and mourners are gathered at House Number 14910 Cowdray Park.

He was born in 1956 and went to Ntalale Primary before proceeding to Gwanda High where he started his Form One.

Before long, Moyo joined the armed struggle and after training was deployed in the Zipra intelligence department.

Nditsheni Dube, from the Zimbabwe National Army, said he met Moyo in 1977 in Lupane where he was a provincial Zipra intelligence officer.

“Madayiza was not only an intelligent officer but he was a skilled sniper and was very operational in the closing of Fatima Mission a year later.

“We also worked together in Jotsholo and his vigour helped us close Siganda base,” said Dube.

He added that after Independence, Moyo joined the President’s Office where he served until his last day.-Chronicle

 

“MDC Alliance Still Intact”: Welshman Ncube

By Own Correspondent| MDC Alliance principal and Spokesperson Welshman Ncube has revealed that while Alliance principals have not met since the elections,  the coalition was still intact and it would definately participate in the 2023 elections in “whatever shape ir form”.

Ncube’s statements come in the wake of speculation that all was not well in the coalition, an assertion he dispelled in an interview with a local publication.

He however said because the Alliance principals had a written agreement to work together, it had the obligation to manage and direct office bearers who had been successfully elected into parliament and council on how to fulfil on their mandate.

Said Ncube:

“The alliance has Members of Parliament which the alliance has to manage and direct on how to do their work in Parliament in the next five years.

The alliance has councillors and it has responsibility to provide leadership in those councils. Everyone who won at whatever level won on the ticket of the alliance. The alliance, therefore, has all these people who are the responsibility of the alliance.

Obviously, there will be future elections in 2023. The alliance in whatever shape or form will obviously be in those elections.”

Moyo (62), died on Sunday at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo due to internal injuries sustained when he was involved in an accident last Tuesday.

Mnangagwa Lawyer Says They Deliberately Went To Court On A Holiday To Get Court Attention

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s lead lawyer Advocate Lewis Uriri has said his team’s appearance at the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) to file papers to oppose MDC Alliance electoral petition on a holiday was stage-managed to prove a point.

Advocate Uriri said going to ConCourt on a holiday was a side-show which later served its purpose.

“We went to ConCourt on a holiday to emphasise a point, though I did not myself attend. Those two small bags could not contain the mass of papers that was brought by a truck in three massive bags when filed. We are not stupid. We don’t film and photograph ourselves at a closed court and ‘leak’ the evidence! The side show served its purpose,” he said.

Uriri said the ruling by the ConCourt on the issue of the days had vindicated him, after he differed with his team on the interpretation of the law.

“The ruling confirms that you include the weekends and holidays, unless the time runs out on a weekend in which case the thing to be done is done the next working day,” he said.

In a brief to Mnangagwa, Uriri differed with his instructing lawyers, Mutumbwa, Mugabe and Partners on the interpretation of the law.

This was noted in a 17-page document prepared for Mnangagwa, by Uriri titled Ex Parte: Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, in which he urged his client to disregard the findings by instructing lawyers.

“Whether my instructing attorneys are correct in their interpretation that in view of rule 3 if the ConCourt Rules (2016) the last day of filing of a petition challenges my consultant’s election as President of the Republic of Zimbabwe is the 16th August 2018,” Uriri wrote.

“Whether my instructing attorneys are correct in their view that no election petition is filed, inauguration day would be Monday the 20th August 2018.”

Outrage Over Racist South African Writer’s Toxic Article On Zim

A VICIOUS article penned by a South African freelance white cricket writer, describing Zimbabwe as a “fascist’’ country whose national team should not be allowed to compete against their international counterparts, has sparked outrage in this country.

The article was written by Telford Vice, part of a cabal of unrepentant racist white cricket writers, who have been using the sport to further their crusade to soil the good name of this country.

Vice, who is based in Cape Town, has been a vicious critic of this country and its leadership and at the weekend used his weekly column in the Sunday Times of South Africa to describe Zimbabwe as a “fascist’’ nation, equating it to Hitler’s Germany and Benito Mussolini’s Italy.

The journalist’s article was based on a campaign in which he tried to argue, “why no one should play against Zimbabwe,’’ and said the Chevrons, who are set to visit South Africa next month, should not have been allowed to come into that country.

Ironically, the journalist’s article was published on the very same day that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was one of the presidents who attended the inauguration of President Mnangagwa at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Yesterday, Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani was forced to issue a statement to respond to the article.

“We have noted with serious concern an opinion article written by South African cricket journalist Telford Vice and published under the headline, “Should we allow Zimbabwe’s cricket team to tour SA?” in the latest edition of the Sunday Times newspaper,’’ Mukuhlani said in a statement.

“Our only response is to echo the words of Nelson Mandela in 1995, when he said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”

“Similarly, Zimbabwe Cricket’s vision is to enable individuals and communities to be empowered and inspired by cricket. We stand by that and we believe cricket can be used as a vehicle for emboldening the youth to reach their full potential in any field they choose.

“Cricket has that power and we are committed to the game and its ability to provide an environment that is positive and energetic as well as expands the horizons and dreams of those that play and are involved. That is our purpose.’’
Vice claimed in his vicious article that the Chevrons represented the triumph of oppression and were sporting ambassadors of fascism.

“Zimbabwe’s team represent the triumph of oppression over the dreams of millions who dared harbour hopes for nothing more nor less than a decent life. They fly the flag of fascism,” he wrote on Sunday.

“Should they be detained as co-conspirators in crimes against their compatriots, turned away at the border, or asked what the hell they think they’re doing trying to pretend all is well enough where they come from to indulge in a spot of mere cricket?

“What should not happen, under any circumstances, is that they are let in to smear the second country with their lie of normality.

“Such an act would be a dereliction of the duty all of us have to the natural law of standing up for right in the face of wrong. It would be unconscionable.

“But when Zimbabwe touch down at OR Tambo International late next month to play South Africa in three games in each of the white-ball formats, not only will they be let in, no questions asked, they will be treated as if they are just another cricket team from just another country.

“They aren’t. They represent the triumph of oppression over the dreams of millions who dared harbour hopes for nothing more nor less than a decent life. They fly the flag of fascism.

“Try telling the suits that they should demand Zimbabwe’s expulsion from the International Cricket Council.
All of the above should happen. It won’t because too many people no longer think; neither about principles nor politics nor indeed what’s right and wrong about how other people are treated.”

Vice also praised former Zimbabwe cricketers, Andy Flower and Henry Olonga, for their black armband protest during the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Flower has since revealed, in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Sport’s Alison Mitchell, that David Coltart, a fierce critic of the Government and an opposition politician, was a big part of that protest.

“The meeting I remember most clearly was in David Coltart’s study, at his home and we sat down and wrote the statement,” Flower said.

“When I say we sat down and wrote the statement, obviously, David Coltart was more eloquent that either Henry or I, and it was important that the language we used in the statement was the right sort of language to get our message across.

“So David, with the input from Henry and I, sort of wrote and edited the statement and I do believe it was David who came up with the idea of having a symbol.”

England subsequently forfeited their World Cup match against Zimbabwe scheduled for Harare Sports Club in what, according to former Zimbabwe captain, Duncan Fletcher, who was coach of the English team during that World Cup adventure, was part of the politics of the day.

“Before a decision (to either travel to Harare or not) was to be made, we welcomed two incredibly brave visitors, who came to speak to me and (Nasser) Hussan (then England captain),” wrote Fletcher, in his autobiography, “Behind The Shades”.

“They were Zimbabwean players, Andy Flower and Henry Olonga, smuggled in by a member of Zimbabwe’s opposition party, the MDC, who had spoken to the whole team before taking me and Hussain into an adjacent room, where we met Flower and Olonga.

“They told us then of their plan to wear black armbands during their games in the tournament to mourn that (democracy). They even suggested that we might consider wearing black armbands if we decide to play in Harare.”

Coltart confirms that he went to Cape Town during that time, and spoke to the England team, but said he never persuaded them to boycott their World Cup tie against Zimbabwe, but instead, urged them to come and fulfil the match.
They didn’t and have never played a match against Zimbabwe since.

ZC officials say the absence of box-office home series, like a contest against England, has cost them more than $7 million in projected earnings every year and has played a big part in pushing their financial books into the red zone.

But when Zimbabwe touch down at O. R. Tambo International late next month to play South Africa in three games in each of the white-ball formats, not only will they be let in, no questions asked, they will be treated as if they are just another cricket team from just another country.

You have to wonder what Oliver Reginald Tambo, who lived in a world where people and principles mattered more than politics, and before leaders sold out to affluence only to resurrect identity politics when it suits them, might have made of that.

“The land on which the cattle grazed was communal property. It was owned by no-one. It was nobody’s private farm. It was the common property of the people, shared by the people. So the practice of sharing was central to the concept of ownership of property.”

That’s Tambo. Try telling the ANC, the EFF, and the DA that everybody already owns the land and that, accordingly, selfishness should be a criminal offence.

Try telling those who only give a damn that Zimbabwe will be here so they can gauge how far South Africa are from a realistic shot at winning the World Cup that they should be on picket lines protesting the Zimbabweans’ presence.

Try telling South Africa’s players that they should refuse to take the field.

Try telling the suits that they should demand Zimbabwe’s expulsion from the International Cricket Council.

All of the above should happen. It won’t because too many people no longer think; neither about principles nor politics nor indeed what’s right and wrong about how other people are treated.

We used to think: Andy Flower and Henry Olonga shattered the lie of normality by wearing black armbands to “mourn the death of democracy in our beloved Zimbabwe” in the full glare of the publicity lavished on the 2003 World Cup. They did so in Harare and across the road from Robert Mugabe’s house.

Is it too cynical to wonder if, 15 years on, players would ask their agents how much they would be paid for wearing the armbands?

Maybe. So here’s an uncynical challenge to the Zimbabweans who will, unfortunately, be allowed into South Africa next month to play mere cricket even as their country cowers in anticipation of what the newly installed tyrant will do.

Zimbabwe’s team represent the triumph of oppression over the dreams of millions who dared harbour hopes for nothing more nor less than a decent life. They fly the flag of fascism.

Before you pack your bats, boots, helmets, gloves and pads, before you check if you have enough chewing gum and sunblock, put a roll of insulation tape into your bag.

Police Dispute Post Election Political Violence Claims

By Paul Nyathi|The Zimbabwe Republic Police has outrightly declined claims that there is sporadic incidents of post election political violence in the country.

Police chief spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba told state run media on Tuesday that investigations by the Zimbabwe Republic Police had revealed that all the cases of political violence alleged in private media were false.

“Investigations carried out so far have revealed that there are no threats and intimidation on anyone,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said victims of political violence, if ever it happens, know where to report – the police.

“As police we would also want to reiterate that the people should report to the police if they are intimidated,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said investigations carried out in Mashonaland Central revealed that the province was enjoying peace although there had been false reports circulating on social media alleging that some top Zanu-PF officials in Muzarabani South allegedly threatened MDC Alliance poll agents.

“Police made investigations into these reports and interviewed the MDC Alliance Muzarabani Constituency chairperson Jaface Mufira who resides in ward 20. He stated that he was unaware of that information and that there were no threats of violence in the area. Police also interviewed the MDC Alliance ward 20 councillor contestant Steven Sado, who said he had not been intimidated or threatened by anyone up to date,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

She said claims that 30 MDC Alliance supporters had been displaced by political violence and were housed at Msasa Project in Harare were false.

“Investigations were carried out and the police interviewed Msasa Projects administrator Prisca Fereti and it was established that it was a false report,” added Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

Government Dispatches Bomb Experts To Investigate Chinhoyi GMB Explosion

At least four workers were killed, while three others were seriously injured after a massive explosion, whose cause is still unknown, rocked the Grain Marketing Board’s Lions Den depot in Mashonaland West province yesterday afternoon.

The blast was so powerful that it ripped through reinforced concrete structures, and caused a fire.

Government yesterday activated specialised investigations State agencies, including the police forensic department and the bomb disposal unit, to comb through the debris of the massive blast for clues as to its cause.

The impact of the blast could be felt some metres away from the depot, with some people reporting cracked walls on their buildings, while pieces of the reinforced silo concrete structure flung several metres away from the blast epicentre.

Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri, who visited the scene of the tragic incident yesterday afternoon, confirmed security arms of Government had been called in to investigate the blast.

“We had a very unfortunate incident whereby some explosion took place in the silo complex,” he said. “We are not very sure what caused it. There are many theories as to what could have caused the explosion.

“We have now summoned forensic experts from the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other experts from various specialist departments to come and examine the site and possibly find out what could have caused the explosion.”

Minister Shiri said it was too early to speculate on what could have caused the explosion.

He said an assessment on the state of the silos would be carried out while grain that was stored in the silos would have to be put in bags and stored outside.

“We have got open silos where we use tarpaulins, but it now entails maize being put in bags for effective storage,” said Minister Shiri. “As it is, the silos will be temporarily unserviceable until the necessary repair work has been carried out.”

Some workers at the depot said the fire and resultant explosion could have been caused by an electrical fault.

Others questioned the magnitude of the blast, saying it could have been an explosive device, while gas build up in the storage infrastructure has also been cited as another potential cause.

The affected workers were part of the morning shift that was cleaning the silos.

They tried to escape through the underground chamber outlet, but were caught up in the blast.

Others affected by the blast were on the top of the silos when it occurred.

Lions Den resident and local councillor Misheck Nyarubero said he rushed to the scene after hearing the massive blast that shook his house.

“I was at home about two kilometres away when the explosion happened,” he said. “It shook the house and I thought it was an earthquake, so I went outside. People said the loud blast was coming from GMB and I went to investigate.”

“Workers there told me there were people trapped in the silo tunnel after a fire broke out from the fifth floor, causing extensive damage.”

Two of the workers were rescued alive with serious burns, while the bodies of those who died were yet to be retrieved by yesterday evening.

Briefing Government officials at the scene, depot manager Mr Obert Zhoya said they managed to put out the resultant fire which started from the silo control plant initially using a bowser provided by a local farmer.

The effort was boosted by the arrival of a fire tender from Chegutu Municipality about 120 kilometres away and another one from Zimplats in Ngezi, as those from nearby Chinhoyi Municipality were said to be down.

“There was a loud sound of an explosion and we called the police,” said Mr Zhoya.

“According to the shift manager, all the workers on the shift could be accounted for except for six who have not yet been located. We are also waiting to hear from experts as to what could have caused the fire and explosion.”

The latest development has led to the temporary closure of the silos, while grain delivered would be stacked on tarpaulin tents as a contingency measure.

Farmers delivering grain to one of the largest storage facilities in the country and in Africa were yesterday being redirected to nearby Banket and Chinhoyi silos.

The Lions’ Den silos have 29 silo bins, making them the second largest in Africa after those in Egypt and third in the world after those in Australia.

The local silos have a storage capacity of around 104 000 metric tonnes of grain.

Last year, Government invested in the refurbishment of the silos, which were built in the 1970s.

Police Shoot Innocent Woman At A Roadblock

POLICE officers manning a roadblock along Seke Road near St Mary’s in Chitungwiza allegedly shot and injured a 30-year-old woman after the driver of the vehicle in which she was travelling in reportedly refused to stop at a roadblock.

Loveness Chiriseri, who had hitched a lift to town in a blue Honda Fit on August 19, ended up being admitted to Chitungwiza General Hospital nursing a bullet wound after being shot.

Chiriseri said the police officer fired at the car after the driver failed to stop at the roadblock and one of the bullets hit her.

“I left home around 10am and got into a blue Honda Fit which had no number plates and was written ‘for sale’ as I was going for a lesson” she said.

“Upon approaching the roadblock, the driver slowed down, but then proceeded past the roadblock. I think he then changed his mind and stopped within a distance of less than 100 metres. That is when the officer with a gun fired two shots. I don’t know where the other shot went, but the second hit the car seat and my right buttock.”

Her medical records signed by a Doctor Garapo showed that she was nursing a gunshot wound.

“Patient who sustained above injury after a bullet ricocheted from a car and hit patient who was a passenger,” her medical record read.

Chiriseri said the police have been mum over the incident and she was being forced to pay for her medical bills, which have gone over $500.

“The police are behaving like nothing happened. I am paying for my medical bills and they have not even made an effort to find out what happened to me. I am suffering emotionally and financially owing to actions of a trigger-happy police officer,” she said.

The driver of the Honda Fit, Lloyd Sibanda, was arrested for failure to comply with police instructions and is currently out on bail.

He refused to speak on the matter, saying he was in shock.

Chiriseri, who is currently bed-ridden, said Sibanda was also helping her with medical bills.

Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi promised to make enquiries about the case, but his phone was no longer being answered later during the day.

Chiwenga Personally Got Ruvheneko Fired – REPORT

By Paul Nyathi|President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Deputy Constantino Chiwenga personally got Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa fired, it has emerged.

Ruvheneko was until the weekend a presenter at the Zimpapers run CapiTalk FM radio but she met her fate when Chiwenga reportedly complained that the radio station had crossed the line on its reportage. The station last month grilled the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Priscilla Chigumba and most recently (last Wednesday) engaged the National Patriotic Front spokesperson, Jealousy Mawarire, the latter who during the program severely criticised the former military commander who is now the vice president, Constantino Chiwenga.

Another staff member, the program manager Napoleon Nyanhi, (also called Napster) has also been sacked.

Impeccable sources within the radio station say Ruvheneko is the victim of a so called on going restructuring exercise at the state run radio.

ZimEye.com was told she has handed in her resignation letter. Ruvheneko told ZimEye, “I handed in my resignation letter …last week.”

When asked concerning the floating rumours, she replied dismissing them saying her exit was “amicable”.

While Nyanhi was fired after the radio station opened phone lines on August 1 when Chiwenga’s soldiers shot and killed at least 6 protesters in Harare, Parirenyatwa was singled following her interview with the National Patriotic Front spokesman, Jealousy Mawarire who lambasted Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and British ambassador to Zimbabwe, Catriona Laing.

Chiwenga demanded answers following the 1 August interview afterwhich Nyanhi was told that bosses in Government wanted him kicked out. Subsequently, his junior, Ruvheneko was also forced to exit via a so called “resignation.”

Manicaland Chamber of Small to Medium Enterprises board chairman Mr Moses Magura has said Emmerson Mnangagwa’s economy will start growing in what will see a speedy revival of industries.

“People of Zimbabwe ought to put aside their political differences and join hands with President Mnangagwa and work towards growth of the economy,” he said.

Mr Magura said the country was endowed with vast human and natural resources that would turn around the economy if properly utilised.

“Zimbabwe has intelligent people from different political backgrounds who are capable of changing the economy as long as they make collaborative efforts,” he said.

“We are expecting the President and his Government to work with all people of Zimbabwe and ensure they have access to finances for SMEs and also create a desk to deal with all issues concerning SMEs.”

Trade development committee chairman for the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) Mr Henry Nemaire said he was confident of the new dispensation’s potential.

“With the mantra ‘Zimbabwe is open for business’ there will be liberal marketing and growth of the country’s economy,” he said. “In the business sector we are expecting the Government to give us full attention and support our businesses.

“As an organisation we want the Second Republic to improve infrastructure like roads, schools and hospitals, to mention a few.

“We also expect Government to promote policies that help reduce production costs which affect our business, for instance, electricity charges that are highly unfavourable to business at the moment and reduce farming input prices and taxes.”

ZESA To Pay Victim $24K

Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of Zesa Holdings, has been ordered to pay $23 805 to a Harare widow who lost her husband due to electrocution.

ZETDC negligently left a live cable on the ground and Ms Scholastica Muranda’s husband accidentally stepped on it.

The man died from the injury. Ms Muranda argued that her husband was the breadwinner in the family which looked up to him for support.
High Court judge Justice Edith Mushore granted Ms Muranda an order for payment of $23 805.

“The defendant be and is hereby ordered to pay the plaintiff the following:

a) Damages for loss of support for plaintiff and her child in the amount of US$23 805 together with interest thereon at the prescribed rate calculated from December 23 2016 to the date of payment in full.
b) Costs of suit.”

The Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) represented Ms Muranda while Muza & Nyapadi Legal Practitioners acted for ZETDC. The live wire that electrocuted the man was left exposed by ZETDC, posing a danger to people who used the path.

Zesa initially denied liability, but later made a U-turn during trial and admitted to causing the man’s death.
When the case started, Ms Muranda claimed $90 297 but the court reduced the figure to $23 805

In a related matter, the High Court recently held ZETDC liable for the death of an eight-year-old boy who fell on naked power cables in Harare in 2012 before ordering the firm to pay $15 000 in damages. ZETDC paid damages to the deceased boy’s mother, Ms Constance Sinachinga, as compensation for the psychological trauma and emotional shock occasioned by the company’s gross negligence at No. 284 Herbert Chitepo Avenue.

The successful lawsuit serves as an eye-opener to some residents that ZETDC can successfully be sued for deaths occasioned by the company’s negligence.

Justice Jester Charewa granted the default judgment after the power company failed to defend its case.

“It is ordered that the judgment be and is hereby entered for the applicant in the sum of US$15 000 together with interest at the prescribed rate from the date of summons to date of final and full payment,” ruled Justice Charewa.

“Respondent shall pay costs of the suit.”

Ms Belinda Chinowawa of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights represented Ms Sinachinga.

The now late Takudzwa Nyandoro was a victim of ZETDC cables left unsecured by the power utility’s employees after maintenance work.

The incident occurred on March 29, 2012 when the unsuspecting boy was playing outside the house with his friends.

The children were picking guavas from a tree in the yard. “While doing so, Takudzwa lost grip, fell into a pit which had been dug by the respondent’s employees and was immediately electrocuted,” reads Ms Sinachinga’s affidavit.

Ms Sinachinga said ZETDC could have at least placed warning signs near the pit.

The live wires in question, according to Ms Sinachinga, were exposed for a period stretching from January to March 2012.

State Media – President Mnangagwa’s inauguration on Sunday has ignited optimism among the people of Manicaland who expect a quick economic turnaround premised on his new Government’s progressive and democratic policies.

Captains of industry said President Mnangagwa had on many occasions clearly spelt out his commitment to turning around the fortunes of the country, which is a good recipe for economic revival.

Political analyst Mr Timothy Pemba said President Mnangagwa would lead the country with the support of development partners.

He called for the removal of all forms of sanctions against Zimbabwe from the international community.

“Zimbabweans should use this as an opportunity to boost democracy and progress,” said Mr Pemba. “Motivated by the country’s peaceful situation, we must unite to achieve economic growth.”

An analyst who refused to be named said the President’s inauguration as the second Executive President of Zimbabwe demonstrated the country’s maturing democracy and dismissed talk of political polarisation in some quarters as baseless.

“To do away with some of the problems Zimbabwe is facing now we have to put the past behind us and uphold President Mnangagwa’s vision of economic growth, industrialisation and job creation,” he said.
