Terrence Mawawa, Harare| Hundreds of tobacco farmers were stranded in the capital, Harare on Saturday after failing to get cash from their respective banks.
The RBZ has since issued a directive to banks to maintain a minimum withrawal limit of $10 000 per day, despite the fact that several banks do not have the cash . Disgruntled farmers said banks in the rural areas had no cash, forcing them to travel to Harare to access their money. “We are struggling to get our money after selling tobacco. Rural banks do not have cash so we have to travel to Harare. However,  we have been stranded in the capital for several days because the banks are failing to release the RBZ stipulated $10 000 withdrawal limit per day.As a result farmers have been stranded at the Boka Tobacco Auction Floors for days. The situation has become unbearable,”said a Chegutu based farmer.
Despite government claims that the country’s economy is stable, queues have resurfaced since banks are limiting daily withdrawals. Civil servants no longer have a fixed pay date as a result of the worsening economic conditions in the troubled nation.
Economists have warned the introduction of the bond notes will further plunge the country’s comatose economy into further abyss.
