The Sudanese President, General Omar al Bashir, who was in South Africa attending the 25th African Union summit escaped police arrest by a whisker managing to secretly lift off into the air for his country in the wee hours of Monday morning.
General Bashir’s arrival in South Africa on Friday opened a police case after him with calls for his immediate arrest and handing over to the International Criminal Court for his various crimes against humanity.
South Africa is a signatory of the ICC.
His spokesperson, Hussein Kashumi, confirmed that Bashir left Monday morning.
South African authorities have said Bashir is a guest of the African Union, whose stance against the ICC is well known.
Robert Mugabe has through the AU repeatedly labeled the ICC as racist and anti-African. He said the continental body will not cooperate with the ICC.
The ruling by a South African judge, Hans Fabricuis had been made that Bashir should not leave the country until a hearing to determine his fate has been held.
There was confusion Monday morning with some reports suggesting that General al Bashir had already left South Africa, while others said he was still around.

The State Media claimed Monday that any attempt to arrest al Bashir could have turned at South Africa’s image on the African scene, especially after it voted together with Nigeria and Gabon for the Security Council to intervene in Libya. The decision saw the invasion of that country and the subsequent death of Col Muammar Gaddafi.

  1. The ICC is nothing but a glorified kangaroo court that specializes in indicting Africans whilst allowing pale-skinned warmongers like George Bush & Tony Blair to go Scot-free!!
How many people know that the USA actually REFUSED to be a signatory to the Rome Statute which gave birth to the ICC??!!…they enacted their own Patriot Act which actually authorises them to invade any territory where an American citizen might be held by the ICC!! What stinking hypocrisy!!

  2. If he is not guilty of the alleged crimes what is he afraid of? He will be found innocent. He should have his day in court and be more than eager to clear his name. The irony of it is that he is probably busy locking up his own people on trumped up charges and often without trial in his own country. An African leader making his own people live lives of deprivation and repression is not only unforgivable but stifles national progress.
