The Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced blanket action against calls for an independent investigation into the death of former Cabinet Minister and ZANU PF Harare Chair Amos Midzi saying there is no need as they are “convinced” of the findings made to date.
Police were on Tuesday morning winding off what they claimed was a probe into the death of former Zanu-PF Harare provincial chairman and Cabinet Minister Amos Midzi, who was found dead in his car at his farm in Beatrice last Tuesday.
A whistleblower has said Mr Midzi was assassinated and analysts say if their claims were false leaving suicide as the conclusion, still the evidence of mental torture on Midzi, a loyal Grace Mugabe supporter, would point to an assassination by inducing the act.  They wrote on the day Midzi died saying: Amos Midzi wasn’t a saint but neither did he kill himself out, a quick google of “Umbrella death” will confirm your worst fears. But the Police say there was nothing sinister on their findings and a “post-mortem conducted last Wednesday on the deceased’s body revealed that he died of poisoning”. They said no foul play was suspected and Midzi’s case would be treated like any sudden death.
“We are in the process of concluding the case and the matter will be treated just like any sudden death case since no foul play is suspected,” a senior police officer said.
The matter is being handled by detectives from the CID Law and Order Section based at Marondera Police Station.
Midzi’s post-mortem was carried out by a team of three doctors who concluded that the death was due to market pulmonary oedema due to poisoning.
In a statement last week, police chief spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said further samples were taken for toxicology tests.
Police recovered a one-litre bottle of poisonous methamidophos and sleeping tablets from Midzi’s vehicle, raising fears that he could have committed suicide.
A cup containing a bluish liquid was also recovered from the car, a Ford Everest registration number ACY 3329, grey in colour, which had all doors locked.
Midzi was buried on Saturday at Glen Forest Memorial Park.(State Media/Additional Reporting)
