The country’s two biggest political parties will on Saturday flex their muscles against each other in terms of numbers when they hold their final rallies within ten kilometres of each other in the capital city ahead of the elections on Monday.

The ruling ZANU PF will hold its “mega rally” at the National Sports Stadium while the country’s biggest opposition the MDC Alliance Will hold its “cross over” rally at the nearby Freedom Square at the same time.

As stipulated by the Electoral Act, all political parties and candidates must wind up their public campaigns 48 hours before Election Day.

In an interview with state media on Friday, Zanu-PF’s Secretary for Legal Affairs and electoral affairs spokesperson Paul Mangwana said his party was ready for the mega rally which will be addressed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“His Excellency President Mnangagwa will address the rally. It’s our last rally the Presidium will be there as well as Zanu PF top leadership and Commissariat. We are expecting not less than 200 000 people to attend because there has been massive mobilisation,” said Mangwana.

He said Zanu-PF’s campaigns went on well and they are expecting nothing short of a victory. “So far so good, we are expecting a landslide victory,” he said.

The MDC Alliance spokesperson Professor Welshman Ncube also said the coalition was ready for the rally which they have termed the “cross over” to government rally which will be addressed by their presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa.

“We are expecting the whole of Harare here and the key speakers are the Alliance speakers. Our campaign has been going on very well, we began in January, we’ve been in this thing for seven months now and we have been criss-crossing the country. We’ve gone back where we started. We think we have done everything we could, we have the energy and we think people deserve better than what they have now,” said Prof Ncube.

Both ZANU PF and the MDC Alliance have been drawing huge crowds to their campaign rallies throughout the country. The figures have been so close leaving critics not sure which of the two has been able to draw bigger numbers to their rallies.

The country goes for watershed elections on Monday to choose a new leader between Chamisa and Mnangagwa who are evidently the only two competing for the top job in the country compared to the other 21 contestants.
