By Own Correspondent| Over 15 senior cops from Mbare police station were reportedly suspended for sympathising with opposition protestors instead of dispersing them during last Wednesday’s demonstrations which later turned violent resulting in 6 deaths.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police allegedly suspended 16 top police officers from Mbare Police Station, a development which the national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba could neither confirm nor deny.
Said Charamba:
“I am not confirming or denying that. I need to check with those responsible so that I can give you a true response.”
However, sources privy to the developments told a local publication that the army was called to quell the protests after it emerged that the deployed police officers were not “dealing with protestors adequately.”
Said the source:
“The Commissioner-General (Godwin Matanga) was not happy with the way the officers responded to the demonstration, particularly those who were captured on camera as gesturing to the protesters to jump onto a police vehicle.
The top commanders feel like the officers were in support of the demonstrators, instead of dispersing them.”-Newsday
