By Own Correspondent| President Emmerson Mnangagwa has tasked a 7 member “independent” commission to investigate the August 1 2018 military shootings which left 7 people dead and 14 others injured in post election violence which rocked Harare’s central business district.
The violence followed delays in the announcement of the 2018 presidential election results by the Zimbabwe Electoral Ccommission (ZEC) and protestors took to the streets before the army was unleashed on them and they fired live bullets killing and injuring innocent by standers.
President Mnangagwa revealed this at a press conference at his Munhumutapa offices in Harare (Wednesday) afternoon.
Chairing the Commission is South Africa’s former President Kgalema Motlanthe, Retired Tanzanian Army General Davis Mwamunyange, University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Charity Manyeruke, Former Commonwealth Secretary General Emeka Anyaoku, UK based lawyer Rodney Dixon, former president of the Zimbabwe Law Society Vimbai Nyemba and University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Lovemore Madhuku.
Some of the key tasks of the commission include to identify the leaders of the protestors who instigated the violence, enquire into the intervention by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, investigate the intervention by the military and assess the damages of the violence among others.
The Commission is expected to have finished their work within 3 months.
This is a developing story. Details to follow.
