Correspondent|MDC Alliance Secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora has confidently declared that he would have garnered more votes than what party leader Nelson Chamisa scored against President Mnangagwa in the July 2018 elections.

Appearing on Zi-FM Stereo’s The Platform anchored by Larry Kwirirayi on Monday evening, Mwonzora was asked if he could have won more votes than what Chamisa got.

“I think so,” said Mwonzora, with a chuckle.

Mwonzora however refused to stated expressly whether he was contesting against party leader Nelson Chamisa at the 24 May Congress.

“Let’s leave that to the MDC people to decide. If they feel that I am better as Secretary-General, so be it. If they want to elevate me, still that’s alright,” Mwonzora said.

He explained that the tradition in the MDC was that one does not declare their own candidature, but gets nominated by provincial congresses first. It is the nomination that he said will indicate where the party structures want him deployed.

On the same issue, Mwonzora described it as unfair that he was the only one being asked to declare his candidature prior to the sitting of the provinces and districts.

Regarding the outcome of the Congress, Mwonzora said he would accept the results of the vote and if he lost, he would congratulate the winner and work under them.

“The MDC was formed for a purpose. It has values, a Constitution and a system. It is those values that we must hold sacrosanct. The Congress time must never be a time for name-calling.

“This should be the time for re-uniting and having fun. Congress is not a matter of life-and-death issue like how some of my colleagues are taking it to be. But I am so happy that president Chamisa himself is not saying the things that some of the colleagues in the party are saying.”
