By Own Correspondent| Zengeza East legislator Goodrich Chimbaira on Saturday led a gang of youths who went on a violence spree attacking deputy mayor Jabulani Mtunzi leaving him seriously injured.

Chimbaira, who according to witnesses was in a fit of rage nearly ran over Mtunzi who had to be rescued by community members in Unit J who witnessed the legislator’s hired mob metting out justice on the deputy mayor.

While the cause of the violence was reportedly said to be emanating from the need to ensure that a faction affiliated to Vice president Elias Mudzuri won the district elections, it was also revealed that the legislator is on record threatening Mtunzi with unspecified action for expressing his interest to challenge him in the party’s primary elections come 2023.

The usually quiet neighbourhood in Unit J became battle ground for the MDC members as they engaged in stone throwing which left several injured.

According to a source who witnessed the raging battle, Chimbaira wanted to run over Mtunzi and he ended up taking aim at ordinary civilians and children who were nearby.

“His car skidded and only stopped a few centimetres away from where the children were playing. He almost ploughed into a vegetable stall because Mtunzi had escaped their beatings but because he could not walk, he fell and was lying close to the vegetable stall.

The challenge is that there were children playing close by and they did not know what was happening. He almost ran over Mtunzi and the children. We were all shocked,” said a witness.

Efforts to get a comment from Chimbaira were futile as his mobile phone was not available.

Mtunzi was taken to Chitungwiza hospital where he is admitted and nursing internal injuries.
