By Own Correspondent| Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi revealed that more than 580 civil servants were convicted of corruption from more than 2 500 cases in the last decade.

Speaking during the National Assembly’s question and answer session on Wednesday, Ziyambi said:

The police received a total of 2 644 corruption cases involving Government employees and former employees in the last 10 years. The accused were convicted in 589 of the cases, representing 22 percent of the total figure. Cases of Criminal Abuse of Office dominated the list representing 62 percent of the total.

He said 1 644 cases of criminal abuse of office were reported resulting in the conviction of 301 officers.

He said:

“At least 923 bribery cases were and 271 suspects were convicted. A total of 56 officers were arrested for concealing a transaction from a Principal where 10 were convicted for their crimes. Another 21 were arrested for concealing personal interests in transactions from a Principal 7 of whom were convicted.”

The state media reports that since his ascension to power, president Mnangagwa has been preaching the need to curb corruption.

Recently he conceded that corruption was deeply entrenched that he had earlier envisioned.

Meanwhile, some analysts believe that there is a lack of political will by the incumbent regime to fight corruption. They further that many arrests that were made have not yielded intended results. They believe a large number of senior government officers have cases to answer.
