By A Correspondent- Mary Chiwenga (nee Mubaiwa) the estranged wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has been denied bail.

Mary who is facing a myriad of charges which include fraud and the attempted murder of the Vice President has been remanded in custody to December 30, 2019.

The state was represented by Michael Reza and Jonathan Murombedzi while the Second Lady, was represented by Taona Nyamakura and Mzokuthula Mbuyisa from Mtetwa and Nyambirai law firm.

Michael Reza argued that the attempted murder charge is a third schedule offense and that as such, the Magistrates’ court should not grant bail.

He said that only the High Court could grant bail in such circumstances. He said that Marry should approach the high court for bail. The Magistrate agreed with Reza and advised Mary to apply for bail at the High Court. She was ordered to return to court on the 30th of December for routine remand.

On the charges of fraud, the export of foreign currency and money laundering also opposed bail for Mary arguing that there is a likelihood that Mubaiwa will continue working to ensure that she kills Chiwenga.

Reza also added that Mary may interfere with key state witnesses and investigations if granted bail. He argued that the witnesses in the externalization case are Mary’s friends who may reconsider their testimonies if approached the right way by the accused.

Mary was arrested on Saturday night by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) allegedly at the orders of her husband. The arrest came after an explosive family meeting to discuss the collapse of the couple’s marriage was held on Friday.

A feisty Mary is alleged to have become indiscrete during the meeting and made barbed remarks about her husband’s alleged sexual inadequacies.

Mary is facing a number of charges of externalizing US$1 million and seeking to fraudulently formalize her marriage without the consent of the Vice President. Mary is also battling another lawsuit from her ex-husband and former Warriors star Shingi Kaondera.

Kaondera has dragged Mary to the High Court demanding a massive US$700 000 alleging that she forged the divorce papers which allowed her to leave him and to get married to Chiwenga back in 2011.

Mary’s camp is suspicious that the lawsuit is being bankrolled by Chiwenga. The reason being that if Mary’s divorce is ruled fraudulent, it would deem her marriage to the former army General legally void.
