By CHRA|Mabvuku residents have resorted to open defecation after Council fail to attend to sewer blockages.

“We are now using maize fields and storm water drains as toilets, as you can see my daughter was having a bath in our maize garden because toilets are no longer accessible.” Said an angry women who resides in Chizhanje Road New Mabvuku.

The worst affected houses are numbers 1,3,5,7,9 and 11 Chizhanje Road.

Residents reported the sewer chokes in October 2019 but no tangible action was taken to address the issue.

“This year we had a stinking Christmas with these sewer bursts you can’t even enjoy a meal or cooking because of the stench.” Charged a lady known as Mai Banda.

A snap survey by CHRA has established that unrepaired sewer bursts have become a common feature in Mabvuku especially at Corner Chizhanje and Chinyika, New Stands Opposite Lafarge and at the gate of ZAOGA Church opposite Tafara High school.

The constitution of Zimbabwe gives citizens the right to a clean environment but this has not been enjoyable in Harare due to poor sanitation.
