By Simba Chikanza| Last week I took opportunity during a side interview on sanctions to grill the Deputy Minister Of Finance, Terrence Mukupe, on the way the government is treating vendors as part of the army’s Operation Restore Order.

The outcry from vendors is that they are neither criminals nor members of the G40 faction. In fact they comprise a swelling 7 million local citizens whose number is just about the entire electorate. With elections approaching in nearly 5 months’ time, any politician or national leader who abuses or is interpreted to be ill treating vendors, is “silly and stupid,” observers have said. The vendors are being abruptly and in many places, brutally removed from the vending areas where they are managing to make the few dollars a day in the current struggling economy.Follow @schikanza
To this however, Hon. Terrence Mukupe distanced the government from the ongoing attacks on vendors, saying the operation can only be blamed on the decision of local councils- (SEE VIDEO BELOW)-

The vendors need to be told that they are part and parcel of the Zim economy and should be allowed to operate freely and fairs without paying tax because their earnings are low.
However, they need to move to designated areas which must be spruced up to look modern and presentable now and in ten years or twenty years time. They must pay rent for their stores but their rent must be reflective of their business.
No first lady should go and loot goods from them to use at her rallies as free gifts to practising thieves.
No police shoukd harass them once they are in place at designated areas which should be fit for purpose.
