The MDC comemorates the passing of 427 compatriots who passed in the “Wankie Disaster” of 1972.
Gas explosions which resulted in the loss of lives resulted in what remains the biggest mining disaster in the history of our country.
Rescue efforts were abandoned after further explosions in the tunnels.
5000 citizens gathered at a nearby stadium for a mass memorial.
Forty seven years later mining disasters are still happening and lives are lost.
Half the times there is no disaster preparedness, rescue efforts are messy, the State is disinterested and lives are lost.
Beyond the recent disasters no relief funds are set up to at least take care of the families of those who died.
As we commemorate the Wankie Disaster, the MDC urges authorities to prioritize safety of miners including artisanal miners, look into the welfare of those who lost loved ones in recent mining disasters and more importantly strengthen disaster response capacity.
