MDC leader Nelson Chamisa Tuesday took a dig at SADC and the African Union (AU for blindly endorsing the result of Malawi’s disputed election last year, an outcome that has since been reversed by the rice producing country’s Constitutional Court.

In a press statement released by his party on Monday, Chamisa urged both SADC and AU and to learn from the Malawian ConCourt and not be quick to endorse elections whose results are still have in dispute.

The MDC leader, who claims he was robbed of poll victory by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the 2018 elections, congratulated Malawians for showing “courage to nullify the rigged election”

He also had praise for Malawian judiciary and security services “which have stood firm in defence of the Constitution”.

“It’s a reminder that where institutions retain independence & professionalism it is possible to correct wrong politics,” he said.

“For too long, our continent has been plagued by the scourge of unfair elections. It gives hope to see court’s checks & controls curtailing capture & abuse.

“Malawians have a fresh opportunity, courtesy of the courage and wisdom demonstrated by their judges & the support of key institutions, to have a free & fair election.”

He added, “Lest we forget, we here in Zimbabwe have an outstanding matter – the legitimacy of the rigged 2018 election.”

Chamisa said SADC and AU should draw key lessons from events in Malawi and “not to rush to endorse sham elections where people have legitimate concerns over processes”.

“SADC and the AU as institutions of resort deserve a renewal and re-orientation to defend African people’s interests,” he said.

“The generation that rigs elections by violence, manipulation of state institutions, corruption, TIPPEX, EXCEL scandals & dictatorial tendencies by men from the past must be put a stop. Justice demands the young generation to lead the way.”

The con-court of Malawi ordered that the election will be held within 151 days.
